Headcanon that Illya is a light sleeper, a fly landing on the window can and will wake him up under the assumption that they are going to die, while Gaby (when she manages to fall asleep to begin with, hello insomnia) is an extremely heavy sleeper, nothing will wake her up. One time Napoleon literally started banging pots and pans because it was noon and he figured she should get out of bed but nope, she was none the wiser.

And then there's Napoleon, who is normally as light a sleeper as Illya, but has now discovered the wonders of Sleeping Around His Tall And Deadly Partner. When he sleeps with Illya or in his near vicinity, he is as heavy a sleeper as Gaby.

This is all fine except Illya has NO IDEA that Napoleon is normally so easy to wake up, which leads to a very awkward conversation with a couple of CIA agents who were paired up with Napoleon at one point for some mission and who, trying to make small talk with Illya, bring up how annoying it was to not be able to so much as grab a bottle of water without finding Napoleon staring.

Meanwhile Illya is there like "...what are you talking about. If he's asleep there could be plane crash right out his window and he would not notice."

Illya is confused. Napoleon is just about to start digging a tunnel bare-handed to get out of this conversation.

Random thought: Napoleon, Gaby and Illya are making pancakes. They all try making pancakes in different shapes, like animals or dinosaurs. Gaby is maddeningly good at it. She doesn't like cooking and is pretty much useless in the kitchen, but pancakes are apparently her secret talent (even she didn't know she could do it - maybe it was just beginner's luck).

I cannot decide about Napoleon and Illya though. Either pancakes are Napoleon's kryptonite, even though he can work miracles in the kitchen other times, and Illya is okay at it, so Napoleon pouts for the rest of the evening that his partners are better than him in something that he should clearly be good at. Or Illya cannot make pancakes shaped like anything identifiable and Gaby and Napoleon have a blast trying to guess what the amorphous blob was actually supposed to represent.

Not a wacky au (I dont think that I could live up to that level of batshit crazy) but an au request never the less.

Paramedic Illya who responds to a multi car pile up. Solo is trapped in his car, it’s a difficult extraction that takes hours, all the while Solo’s condition is deteriorating. But the time they get him out he’s in criticle condition and it’s touch and go. Maybe Gaby was in the car but it was easy to get her out.

For the following days/weeks Illya can’t seem to let solo go - he’s never has this issue letting go off a patient after the hand over - so he goes to visit Solo after he gets moved out of the ICU

Oooh this one is ripe for lots of drama! Honestly perfect for whumptober. I love the idea that Illya has seen this kind of thing time and time again, but there's something about Napoleon that sticks with him. I can see a situation where Napoleon is conscious at first and Illya has to try to keep him talking and awake while they work to get him out. Maybe Illya is not usually the "talking" one, because he's not a very chatty person, but for some reason he's the one who has to this time. He discovers Napoleon is surprisingly easy to talk to, but also he starts feeling more and more distressed as Napoleon starts fading. Imagine if Illya can see at least part of him—enough to see those piercing blue eyes that linger on in his head for ages afterward.

Maybe in the aftermath he doesn't even know Napoleon's full name, and he tries to track it down through the hospital but is rebuffed because of HIPAA. He should give up, but he just needs to know if Napoleon is ok. That's all (that's not all). One day after dropping off a call he runs into Gaby, who's there to visit Napoleon, and he's all awkward about trying to find out about Napoleon without trying to seem weird. She takes him to visit, which surprises Napoleon. They talk a bit and that SHOULD be the end of it, but it's not. Illya keeps coming back, bringing Napoleon better food than the hospital meals and getting shoo'd out by the nurses because he's there too long.

Obviously they fall in love, and what starts harrowing and whumpy ends impossibly soft (guess I'm in a fluffy mood, lol).

Gallya + car races

Headcanon that Gaby and Illya sometimes engage in car races against each other in between missions, just for fun and the kicks. They’re pretty evenly matched in their skills, which keeps the races interesting. Napoleon usually prefers to watch from the sidelines.

Illya Kuryakin, double medalist in the U19 world championships, gets recruited by Irvine University to row for them. Instead of being allowed to continue his career as a single rower, he’s forced to compete for spots in the men’s eight, forcing him into team practices, swallowing corrections of his teammates, and allowing someone else to dictate his stroke.

It only gets worse when his infuriating roommate also turns out to be a rower. And despite skipping practices and getting into trouble, he’s good enough that Illya ends up having to seat-race him for a spot in the top boat.

God help him if he’s supposed to spend another day in a pair with that guy…

he doesn’t like driving cars very much (but motorcycles and boats he loves — he likes to feel the wind in his hair)

he has an excellent filter. like he’s always thinking of clever insults and judgments and retorts but he never says any of them aloud

Illya Nickovetch Kuryakin Headcanons that no one asked for (1964 TV Series)

He dreamed of going to the Olympics as a youth for swimming.

He is actually Ukrainian but spent many years living and working in Moscow. People (read: Solo) can't seem to learn the difference. It's better for their working relationship if Illya just accepts it and doesn’t try to explain.

He remains a Soviet of good standing and as such reports back to Moscow regularly. With the full knowledge and participation of UNCLE, of course.

The ring he wears is in honor of his fiancée who died when they were both young.

He lived with the gypsies for a while during his teen years.

The dog tag he wears is stamped with his name, rank, and serial number. A habit left from time in the military.

He served in the Soviet Navy before the government decided his skills could be best utilized in an international placement.

1.What made you ship it? -granted this is leaning HEAVILY on headcanons given the only real source we have for their relationship is largely between a Geoff Johns interview and Vlad's Who's Who entry in The New Golden Age (2022) #1 BUT i think what largely drew me to it was simply the concept of the one single other person in the world who is evenly matched with Alan in every single way. as a huge fan of Superman: Red Son generally too im SO fascinated by the concept of how someone with powers like Alan might be changed by growing up in that environment. the fact that Vlad's described as being an expert hand-to-hand combatant, a highly successful Red Army assassin, that it's mentioned he and Alan actually worked together TMFU-style and whatever happened impacted Alan enough that he asked if he could work again. that Geoff himself said he created Vald with the EXPLICIT purpose of making it so Alan could be the main character of the universe. all these unanswered that im DESPERATE to see how it plays out. everything's just soooo immensely delicious to imagine.

2. What are your favorite things about the ship? -THE DRAMA. literal star-crossed lovers. the way the two of them come from SUCH vastly different walks of life it's insane. Vlad's a deadly trained soldier with the full sponsorship of the Red Army and Communist Russia, given his powers by scientific experimentation for the specific purpose of being the Green Lantern's equal/superior. compared to Alan-- received his powers after a near-death accident, and remained largely a street hero for the vast majority of his history even after joining the JSA, self-trained, and at one point so at odds with his own government he'd sooner accept forced retirement than do what they say. and yet, despite all that, despite their apparent frequent clashes, the occasion they have to work together impacts them SO much Alan is driven to want to have it happen again. what happened!!!! that's all i want to know.

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

-probably the fact that even if i do ship them, i really don't see any kind of typical "happy" ending for them. what little else i've seen of other people shipping it imo have a wayyyyy too unrealistic expectation of the emotional aspect of it. they love each other and all but definitely do not get married at any point or ever or even live together. Vlad's been MIA and presumed dead for decades now (im assuming anyhow, as of this writing that's what the current canon seems to imply), and even they've thought about each other still this whole time i feel like it's kind of a hard thing to get over. at most i see them working best being in a very private relationship, unwilling to make much of a spectacle out of it or involving any more people than strictly necessary. they've both been in hiding for so long (Vlad literally, Alan figuratively) that that's simply what ends up being most comfortable.

also Alan is 100% gay homosexual and he and Vlad regularly have sex about it always. key to a healthy relationship.

A Map of The Check, Please Hometowns

Okay so some of this is headcanon, but mooooost of it is canon. I’ve included all the North American characters whose origin we canonically know (plus one we don’t skdjfh) except Johnson because he has no Comic Face. (I’m sure someone’s done this before but like. i had fun.)

He carries around cards with numbers and cards with + and - signs to deliver his judgement. He ALWAYS fucking has them, because he doesn't understand romance so he is never 100% sure that ANY situation is going to be kiss-free

At first Illya and Gaby figure that he's rating their kisses based on sexyness, which like would track when it comes to Napoleon's alloaro ass, right? Except one time he rates the most unsexy, sticky, quick peck on the lips with a 9 and they are extremely confused

He rates a full-blown make-out session a 3 one time and a 7 another time (in their defense, He Was Not Supposed To Be There), and they don't understand what the difference was

Plus, sometimes he rates the kiss high but still gives them the WORST side-eye, they have no idea what is going on in his head but they are so happy to have him there regardless

I have no evidence to back this up but here are some card game (and one board game) headcanons based on ✨️vibes✨️ (also I'm not restricting the games to the 60s)

Solo is insanely good at Uno somehow, like it's almost unnatural. Illya, on the other hand, is insanely terrible at it. He is decently good at every other card game and prides himself on his solitaire time record. But for some reason he cannot master Uno. He flipped (and broke) the kitchen table over it once. It was swiftly banned from the household.

Blackjack is also banned, because no matter how much he promises or how much Gaby and Illya threaten him, Solo Will Not Stop counting cards.

Poker is just about the only card game the three of them can play without Illya rage quitting or Solo cheating (he claims it's because he honors the "integrity of the game"). It goes well and they have fun for a while. But then Gaby gets Way Too Good at it and bankrupts them both one night. An immediate investigation was conducted and she was absolutely clean. It took three more nights of emptied wallets for poker to be banned as well.

They won't even touch Monopoly with a ten foot pole.

Random thought: Napoleon is usually very smooth when flirting and capable of seducing basically anyone he wants to, but he suddenly turns dumb and awkward when he's trying to flirt with Illya.

Oh a TMFU/Gorncharov cross over??? Maybe Illya, Napoleon, and Gaby are just in Naples for an unrelated issue. Or Gorncharov knows Illya from childhood and calls his old friend in for help. We all know that Gaby and Katya would get on great. Illya and Gorncharov can both be idiots pining together over Napoleon and Andry respectively. Napoleon and Andry can probably bond over their tastes for finer things in life or something I dunno.

This is of course a very natural crossover! It's no secret that Goncharov is one of Guy Ritchie's favorite movies, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. definitely shows the great influences of all his movies; he's said before that he wanted to set TMFU in Italy as a nod to Goncharov, and in the original script Victoria's name was Sofia. However, since Goncharov was more or less still lost in 2015, I feel like the parallels are definitely underappreciated, especially all the clock/watch imagery and its ties to both the themes of broken families and Goncharov/Illya's trust issues. Few people realize that Illya's "You know what my mission is?" line when Napoleon returns his father's watch is a direct reference to Goncharov's "You know what the job is?" line in the clocktower scene when he confronts Andrey. Of course the very fact that Illya gets his watch back shows that Illya still holds on to his sense of self, unlike Goncharov, who loses it for good. (Goncharov google doc, short analysis of Goncharov's watch)

Now about that crossover.

I assume we're going on a crossover before the events of the movie, since, well, spoilers (can you spoil a 50 year old movie?), but there's not a lot of opportunity after. Perhaps set in the late 60s, after UNCLE has been a team for a while.

I like the idea that Goncharov knows Illya from his past, before Illya's father was arrested, and before Goncharov was truly inducted into the family business. When Illya's father is arrested and he's sent to an orphanage (common for children of political prisoners), he of course loses touch with everyone from that life, including Goncharov. I think Goncharov, even well-connected as he is, wouldn't know Illya is a KGB agent now, but perhaps Illya does know about Goncharov's move to Naples. He finds out about it during a KGB operation and doesn't really think much of it, but then the UNCLE team ends up in Naples on a mission and whoops, it's connected to Goncharov. This could definitely lead to some angst and conflicted feels since they were good friends as children, but now Goncharov is part of the mob, so they're obviously thrown into this antagonistic relationship. Despite himself, Illya can't help but want to try to find a solution that doesn't end with his old friend dead.

He's surprised to find that his partners support him in this, but of course Andrey and Napoleon hit it off (leading to some scenes of jealous Illya & Gonch; Goncharov gets threatening toward Napoleon because he thinks Napoleon is trying to make a move, only to be shocked that Illya is deadly serious about protecting his American; Illya and Napoleon have an argument about all the time Napoleon is spending with Andrey), and Gaby and Katya would definitely share a certain kinship. I think that seeing Goncharov and Andrey's relationship, fraught with unresolved homoerotic tension, and how destructive repressing those feelings is, would help Napoleon and Illya recognize the cycle in their own relationship and break it, finally admitting what they mean to each other. Perhaps Gaby secretly tries to convince Katya to leave Goncharov and the mob behind, but of course she fails because Katya's not at the breaking point yet, she still believes things can work out.

Obviously there's a ton of potential here for a crossover! And that's not even delving into the hints at Goncharov, Katya, and Andrey's histories with the KGB in canon, which is pretty much unexplored.
