Starting out thoughts
Here goes...
Throughout my Bachelor's degree, I jumped between different courses, trying out new things every year. I wasn't doing this because I was especially dissatisfied with my major, which turned out to be in English Literature, but because I legitimately had no concept of the future, of having to find a job, or of a degree being supposedly being *for a career*. I suppose I still find the idea of transitioning from student life to adult life hard, but it's been a few months since I went back and did Honours, and now I have a clear intention for what I want to do in the future. This Tumblr is a weekly chronicle of my efforts to make that aspiration, the one career aspiration I really have, come into being.
I've realised that I love language. I love the feeling of becoming more proficient in a second language, and I love the idea of using that foreign language every day for work. Interpreting seems like the natural choice, with its variety of work, its harnessing and improving of interpreting skills, and if I can do a master's then I'll be able to work as an interpreter across many domains, not just in the community, and not just to aspire to interpret at global conferences.
Right now, I'm a heritage speaker of Mandarin Chinese. My parents spoke it to me all throughout childhood and throughout high school and university, and I sometimes used it to talk to relatives in China. But I often find myself tripping over words, unsure of my sentence structures, and missing certain words in my vocabulary. This is especially clear when I video call my parents, which happens fairly frequently, and I need to use an English word to fill in the blanks.
Right now, I'm in Melbourne, a city that is new and fresh to me. I've been here for a month, and being here comes with new opportunities. I have the chance to pick from a wider variety of Chinese classes, and there is a Master's I would really like to do in Interpreting and Translating. However, they need me to be close to fluent. The semester 1 classes start in February - what I essentially need to do is reach an advanced level of fluency before December, either this year or next.
All across the internet, people say it takes a really long time to be comfortable using Chinese, and that there is so much cultural information embedded within the language that you never stop learning it. However, I haven't started from 0, and really believe that if I can work on it consistently, and with focus (sorry German), I'll be able to get there.
So, here is my goal. By the end of next year, I want to pass an oral proficiency exam and be admitted into the Master's course for 2025. This is a long term goal, and I know that when I'm in the course there'll still be more for me to pick up. One thing I'm also conscious of is age in relation to career opportunities. I'm 24 now, so by the time I enter I'll be 26, and by the time I graduate I'll be 28, if it all goes to plan. It's a long road ahead of me, but I think I would be so grateful to myself for putting in the hours if I got there. I would be rewarded with something I could do for the rest of my life to earn money with, a job where being a person and a communicator is first.
Otherwise, I'm really subject to the winds of time. Maybe I'd still go somewhere I'd like, but it would be from chance and other people I meet, not because I'd worked long and hard for it.
This will be first and foremost a discussion of what I've done for my Chinese learning, as well as setting goals (accountability and progress checking). It will also touch on my energy levels and mood, something that will change a lot when I start working, and when I move out of this hostel. It will also be a place to record thoughts, dreams, hopes and despairs, and hopefully recuperate and come out of things clear-headed. This is the one career path that really resonates with me, and I want to follow it with my heart.

A/N: I realized I did not explain in the previous chapter that Chloe had to amputate Holly's malformed leg. I have corrected it to reflect this. Holly is based on a real animal in a shelter near me.
Nine Months Later
Beca had just finished her last regular class before final exams and was headed to the library to study when her text alert went off. It was from Stacie.
Legs: OMG Shrimp: Hi to you too. What's up? Legs: You'll never guess what I found out about your girl Shrimp: What girl? I have no girl Legs: I'm talking about the hot veterinarian Shrimp: What about her? Legs: She's fucking brilliant Shrimp: Well, duh, she's a vet Legs: Not what I mean. Shrimp: Out with it, Stacie. Have studying to do. Legs: She's famous Shrimp: For what? Legs: Just google her name Shrimp: Yeah, okay. Later. Have to study or I'm going to fail calc Legs: Ask your girl to help you Shrimp: Not my girl, Stacie Legs: Not yet. Shrimp: 🙄
Beca tried to focus on her calculus, but Stacie's texts had made that impossible. She finally googled Chloe's name on her phone.
The first result was the website for the veterinary hospital where Chloe worked. It was a basic profile page stating that Chloe had begun working there three years ago, her degree was from Cornell, and it also mentioned her volunteer work with the shelter. Below that, several news articles came up, and one included a picture of a little girl with red curly hair and blue eyes in a graduation cap and gown. The cap was so big on her head, it nearly covered her eyes.
The headlines blew Beca's mind. A newspaper from Portland, Oregon had an article titled "Local 6-Year-Old One of the Youngest to Join Mensa." Another showed a teenage Chloe in a graduation cap and gown next to an elderly woman also dressed in a cap and gown. It was titled "University of Portland's Youngest and Oldest Graduates." Beca clicked on the article, and, sure enough, it was Chloe. She'd earned her bachelor's degree at fourteen years old while another woman was earning hers at ninety-eight years old. The article stated that Chloe had been accepted to the veterinary program at Cornell. Beca scrolled further down the results page to find an article from Cornell from about five years ago congratulating its youngest graduate of veterinary school.
She had to text Stacie.
Shrimp: Holy shit you weren't kidding Legs: What happened to studying calc? Shrimp: Couldn't do it after that text. Legs: Crazy, right? Shrimp: I wonder why she didn't tell me Legs: You'll have to ask her Shrimp: I can't Shrimp: Too weird Shrimp: How did you find out? Legs: I went with her on a rescue the other day Shrimp: And she told you? Legs: No Legs: Her brother started calling her "Mensa" and "Baby Genius" Legs: She got really pissed Shrimp: But that sounds like sibling banter Legs: No, she shot him a death glare Legs: He backed off fast Shrimp: So you googled her? Legs: Yeah Shrimp: So, do I tell her I know? Legs: That's up to you Legs: So you're still talking Shrimp: Sometimes
By "sometimes" Beca meant "almost daily." It had started with Chloe texting updates about Holly. They'd managed a brief walk once her stitches were healed. She'd been sending weekly pictures to Beca, and this had rapidly shifted to texting each other nearly every day. She wasn't sure what it meant, if anything, and she wasn't going to tell Stacie. Her friend would have a field day with all the teasing.
Legs: She likes you Shrimp: She doesn't. I'm not smart like she is Legs: Nobody is Legs: She asked about you Shrimp: Liar Legs: Nope Legs: Dead serious Shrimp: What did she ask? Legs: She wanted to know when you'd be in Atlanta Shrimp: After finals. Legs: That's what I told her Legs: She seemed excited Shrimp: I think you're reading into things Legs: Whatever you say Shrimp: I gotta go. Need to study calc Legs: Okay
Calculus was even harder to study at this point. Not only was Chloe gorgeous, but she was way out of Beca's league. Why would someone with an IQ score off the charts want her? Beca wasn't stupid, but school was tough for her. She hadn't even told Chloe that she was only going for an associate's degree. She wasn't even sure she was capable of earning that. She had to think about whether or not she would tell Chloe what she knew.
Beca decided to skip studying for the moment and grab an early dinner, hoping she could clear her head. She sat at a table in the corner of one of the dining halls, eating her dinner. She tried to think about what she'd learned about Chloe. She imagined things couldn't have been easy for her. High school had been difficult enough for Beca, and she'd been with students her own age. She read a few more articles and discovered Chloe's parents had enrolled her in a private school and hired tutors to teach her at home. She hadn't had a normal life growing up. A few articles had stated that Chloe's parents had tried to enroll her in activities with her peers, but Beca was sure it hadn't been the same as attending school with other kids her age.
Beca even found a YouTube video of the Ellen DeGeneres Show when Chloe was ten years old. She'd just graduated high school. She was talking to Ellen about her dream to become a veterinarian. Chloe's parents were on the show, and they'd explained that they'd had to scrape together the money for Chloe's schooling because the public school system couldn't properly educate her. Ellen had gifted the entire family with a trip to Disney World, and Chloe had let out an adorable squeal when she found out.
Beca finally put everything down once she was finished her dinner. She had to force herself to work on her calculus. She decided, at least for now, not to say anything to Chloe about what she knew. If Chloe hadn't told her, Beca assumed she must have had her reasons.
The next day, Beca got a text from Chloe while she was in the middle of cramming for finals.
Hot Vet: Hi! I'm sure you're studying, but I wanted to share the good news Cute Volunteer: I can take a short break. What's up? Hot Vet: Holly got adopted today! Cute Volunteer: Awesome! Cute Volunteer: Nice owner? Hot Vet: Yup
Beca was happy for Holly but sad for herself. She'd been looking forward to seeing Holly that summer. She knew the dog had made a ton of progress, thanks to Chloe's updates.
Cute Volunteer: I'm happy for her Hot Vet: Me too Hot Vet: When do you come back? Cute Volunteer: A couple weeks Cute Volunteer: Last final is end of next week Cute Volunteer: Going to spend a week at mom's and then go to dad's Hot Vet: Looking forward to seeing you Hot Vet: I miss you
Beca froze for a moment. Chloe missed her? Maybe Stacie wasn't as wrong as Beca thought. Still, she couldn't imagine Chloe would ever want her.
Cute Volunteer: Looking forward to coming back Cute Volunteer: Miss you too
Chloe didn't respond immediately, and Beca needed to get back to studying.
Cute Volunteer: Have to get back to studying. Talk later.
She put her phone in "do not disturb" to prevent further distractions. She buried herself in her books so she would pass her classes. Her parents were paying for college, but Beca's end of the bargain was to keep up her grades. She wasn't working, so she had no way to pay her parents back for any classes she failed.
A few weeks later
Beca got off the plane and met her dad at the airport.
"Hey, Bec, how was the flight?"
"No screaming babies, so it was good."
"Got your luggage?"
"Yup. I carried on."
"Great, let's go home. I have a surprise for you."
Once they were home, Beca's dad opened the door first and Beca was shocked at what she saw. There was Holly, balancing on her three legs, and wagging her tail as fast as she could.
"You adopted Holly, Dad?"
"I sure did. Surprise!"
Beca knelt down to pet the dog, crying tears of joy. "Oh my goodness, Holly. So good to see you. I think you remember me, don't you?" Holly just snuggled into Beca, relishing the attention.
"I asked Dr. Beale and Stacie to keep it a surprise. I wanted to tell you myself."
"This is an amazing surprise, Dad," said Beca. Holly had rolled over for a belly rub at that point. "Oh, Holly, it's so good to see you happy." Holly continued to enjoy the belly rub, tongue lolling to the side.
She immediately snapped a pic and first texted it to Stacie and then Chloe.
Legs: Great surprise, right? Shrimp: The best Legs: You're not mad I didn't tell you? Shrimp: No. Glad you didn't steal Dad's thunder
Hot Vet: Congratulations! Cute Volunteer: Thanks. I was afraid I wouldn't see her anymore Hot Vet: Looks like she remembers you Cute Volunteer: Yeah Hot Vet: Coming to the shelter tomorrow and Tuesday? Cute Volunteer: Yes to both days Hot Vet: See you there!
Beca went to her room and unpacked her things, thankful that she'd made sure to keep quite a few things in her room at her dad's. It saved her so much time if she didn't have to check her bags when she traveled to her dad's. Holly followed her into the room and sat patiently while Beca unpacked, tail wagging the whole time.
"Hi, sweetie. It's like you're a different dog now. I'm so glad my dad adopted you." She walked over to pet the dog again after she finished unpacking, and Holly immediately lay down and rolled to her back for more belly rubs.
That evening, Beca's dad offered to take her to dinner. The minute he grabbed his car keys from a hook near the door, Holly began to whimper.
"Dad, why is she upset?"
"She knows that when I grab the car keys, I'm going to leave."
"Can we take her somewhere dog-friendly?"
"If you can find a place."
Beca pulled out her phone and did a google search. "I found three that allow dogs if we eat outside."
"You choose," said her dad.
Beca pointed to the first one on her phone. "This one," she said. She turned to Holly. "Hey, Holly, do you want to go with us?"
Holly immediately perked up her ears and wagged her tail. Beca's dad chuckled. "I'll take it that's a yes."
Beca and her dad sat on the outside deck at the restaurant with Holly. Several people smiled at the happy three-legged dog. Beca was relieved that nobody asked her why Holly was missing a leg. It wasn't a story she wanted to tell. After a thorough sniffing of the area by the table, Holly lay under the table at Beca's feet, sighing contentedly.
The server took their orders, complimenting the dog on her behavior. Beca and her dad caught up on what they'd been doing lately.
"Freshman year was tough! I got through it, though. I have just under a 3.0. I got a C in calculus."
"That's pretty good, Beca," said her dad. "I'm proud of you for trying. Did you pick a major?"
"Veterinary technology. I loved working with animals last summer. It's only a two-year program, though. But probably two and a half for me since I haven't taken most of the first-year courses they recommend."
"It's okay. A lot of people don't finish a four-year program in all four years for a lot of reasons. One extra semester is no big deal."
"Thanks. What's up with you lately?"
"Well," said her dad, hands fidgeting nervously. "I'm seeing someone."
"You are?" Her dad nodded. "How long? Why didn't you tell me?"
"It's only been a month. Her name is Sheila. She also teaches at Barden." Beca's dad taught comparative literature at Barden University. He'd seemed disappointed that Beca had chosen to stay in Seattle for college, but he'd respected her decision.
"Office romance, Dad? I never took you for that," Beca teased.
"Sheila teaches math. Calculus I and II, actually."
"Dad! You're dating someone who could have helped me with my homework last semester and you didn't tell me? Not fair!"
Dr. Mitchell's cheeks turned pink. "Sorry."
"Relax, Dad. I'm kidding. Well, mostly. I'm glad you told me in person."
"I know I don't know much about texting, but I figured this information was best shared in person. So, you're okay with this?"
Beca nodded. "Dad, it's been nine years since you and Mom split. I think I can handle you dating someone new."
"I'm glad."
Their food arrived and they continued to chat over dinner. Beca told her dad she'd be happy to meet Sheila whenever they were both ready. Holly mostly lay contentedly at Beca's feet. Beca made sure to save a few bites of her chicken to give Holly as a treat for being so good, and Holly gobbled them up happily the minute Beca offered them to her.
"So, what's on your mind?" asked Dr. Mitchell. "I can tell something's eating at you."
"I found out something recently about someone, but I don't know if I should bring it up."
"Okay, who is it and what did you find out?"
"You know Dr. Beale, the vet at the shelter, right?"
"Of course."
"Stacie found out she's some super genius. She never told me."
"How did Stacie find out?"
"She went on a rescue with her recently, and she picked up on something when her brother started teasing her. She googled her name and a bunch of stuff came up."
"And then Stacie told you?"
"Yeah. She told me to google her name. I did and it was right there. She joined Mensa at six, graduated high school at ten, college at fourteen, and vet school at eighteen."
"I thought she looked awfully young to be a vet."
"Judging by the date of the article, she's twenty-three, maybe twenty-four."
"She likely has her reasons for not telling you. I think you should respect her wishes and keep it to yourself. It's okay to tell her you already know if she ever tells you. She'll probably be glad you didn't say anything."
"That's kind of where I am, but it feels weird. She and I have been talking almost daily for a while. I feel weird keeping something from her."
"She's keeping something from you too. Just act like nothing has changed. I'm sure you'll figure it out."
"Thanks, Dad."
That night, Holly tried to jump into bed with Beca, but she couldn't manage on three legs. Beca lifted the dog onto the bed with her and Holly curled up at her feet. Her dad walked by and laughed.
"What?" asked Beca.
"Nothing," he said. "I just know where I stand. She likes you best. Did she jump on your bed by herself?"
"No. I had to lift her."
"I've been doing the same thing."
"I guess we know who runs things around here," said Beca, petting Holly.
"Goodnight, you two."
Beca texted Chloe before bed, a habit she'd developed shortly after going back to Seattle.
Cute Volunteer: We took Holly with us to dinner tonight Hot Vet: How did it go? Cute Volunteer: She was so good Hot Vet: Awww...glad to hear Cute Volunteer: And I told my dad I chose a major Hot Vet: What did you choose? Cute Volunteer: Veterinary Technology Hot Vet: Good choice Hot Vet: You'll rock that job for sure Cute Volunteer: Thanks
The next day, Beca arrived at the shelter as soon as it opened. Just after she walked in, Chloe walked in with a cat carrier in her hand, looking angry. "Slime bags," she muttered under her breath as she went straight to the exam room.
Beca cautiously walked to the exam room and knocked lightly on the door.
"Who is it?" asked Chloe.
"Beca."
"Come in."
Beca walked in and saw Chloe examining a cat. "What's wrong?" asked Beca.
"Some asshole left this cat in a carrier on the animal hospital's doorstep yesterday. This sweet girl here is lucky one of my techs came by to check on the animals we are boarding. It was over ninety degrees yesterday, and they left her there without even a bowl of water. The poor thing could have cooked in that heat!"
"That's awful," said Beca. "Is she okay?"
"I think so," said Chloe. "Aubrey brought her to her home immediately and then called me. I was just getting back from vacation yesterday. What a welcome back. There's a special place in hell for whoever did this."
"I'll say."
"I'm glad to see you here, though. Sorry for the rant."
"It's okay."
"How is Holly?"
"Great. Adorable. She slept in my bed last night."
"That's cute. Did she jump up onto it?"
"No. I lifted her."
"You need to get her some steps or a ramp so she can do it herself."
"They make those?"
"Yup," said Chloe. "Check online. They have a lot of options."
"Thanks. I think I'll do that."
"Okay, the cat is perfectly healthy. I'll give her some shots since we have no idea what, if any, she's already had. She sure is lucky Aubrey came to the hospital yesterday. I can't believe they couldn't just wait a day and bring her here. People suck."
"Yeah. Poor thing."
"Do you want to name her?"
"Sure, I guess. Let me think." Beca took a good look at the cat. She was a tabby, gold with black stripes. "Tabitha. Tabby for short."
"Cute," said Chloe. "Okay, Tabby. You go with Beca." She handed the cat to Beca. "Give her a good brushing and a flea treatment, and then have CR put her up for adoption. This little sweetheart should get adopted soon, I think."
"I'm on it," said Beca. She took Tabby into the next room, and she had to grab two brushes to groom her because the cat kept wanting to play with the brush. Beca let her play with one brush while she groomed her with the other, frequently switching because the cat kept dividing her attention between the two. Once she was done, she grabbed an oral flea treatment. Tabby gave the pill a sniff and turned her head away, so Beca stuck it in a pill pocket. Tabby ate it, purring away. Once that was done, she carried the cat over to CR. "This is Tabitha. She's been given the all-clear from Dr. Beale," said Beca.
"What about you?" asked CR.
"Huh?"
"Did Dr. Beale give you the all-clear?"
Beca rolled her eyes. "You are so not funny."
CR shook her head. "At least I'm not an idiot."
"What the hell does that mean?" asked Beca.
"Relax," said CR. "I'm just teasing you. We're just all getting a kick out of the 'heart-eyes' you two give each other."
Beca crossed her arms in front of her chest. "I do not."
"Whatever you say, Beca."
Stacie walked in. "Who's our new friend?" she asked, gesturing to the cat.
"Tabitha. Tabby for short. Some asshat left her in a carrier without food or water in front of the animal hospital yesterday. Poor girl is lucky a vet tech had to come by that day."
"I told you some pet owners are shit."
"Sure looks like it."
Chloe walked by on her way out. "I'm heading to the animal hospital. Call me if you need me!"
Stacie elbowed Beca in the ribs. "You're staring at her ass," she whispered as Chloe walked out the door.
"I am not," lied Beca.
"Then, why are you blushing?" asked Stacie.
"Shut up," said Beca. Stacie laughed, and CR joined her.
"You're a mess, Beca," said CR.
Beca came in the next day, happy that it was Chloe's day at the shelter. She was looking forward to spending some time with her. She still figured she didn't have a snowball's chance in hell at going on a date with her, but she could enjoy her company. They'd texted so often lately, she felt like she'd been spending her days with the vet anyway.
The first person to come to the shelter that day was looking for a cat, and, as Chloe had predicted, they chose Tabitha. "We just got this sweet girl yesterday," said Beca. "I've been calling her Tabitha, or Tabby for short. You can name her whatever you like, though. She doesn't know it yet."
The young woman smiled. "I think Tabitha is a good name for this little one. How old is she?"
"Our vet is guessing she's around three years old."
"Just the right age," said the woman. "I want some company in my new apartment, but I didn't want a kitten who might scratch up my things. She's perfect!"
The woman filled out the application. Beca gave the paperwork to Denise to run a quick background check.
Beca grabbed some literature they hand to all adopters and printed a copy of the records from her intake. Once Denise told Beca the adopter was approved, Beca brought over the paperwork.
"Congratulations, Ms. Smith! You're approved!"
"It's Jessica. And thanks."
Beca handed her the paperwork and had her sign a few papers. "Do you need a carrier?"
"Yes, thanks."
Beca grabbed one of their carriers, took the adoption fee from Jessica, took a picture of the two of them, and sent them on their way.
"Bye, Tabby!" she called. "Enjoy your new home!"
Just as they were leaving, a woman with four young children came in with a dog. She sniffled and her voice broke as she said, "I'm here to surrender this dog." She began to cry. "I'm sorry. I told myself I wouldn't cry."
"It's okay," said Denise. "We're not here to judge. We're here to help. May I ask why, though?"
"This is Izzy. My mom passed away, and my dad has been gone for a while. None of us can care for Izzy. We all have animals and kids. I already have four kids and a dog of my own. I tried to make it work, but my dog didn't like her. I feel awful about this."
Beca handed her a tissue. "It's okay," Beca said. "You're taking her to a shelter, rather than just abandoning her somewhere. We'll take good care of her until she finds a new home. I promise."
"Thanks," said the woman, sniffling. She handed Denise a folder. "I have her vet records. I think she's a little behind. My mom couldn't take her for checkups once she got sick, but I didn't know that until after she died. I had to get these from her vet because my mom didn't have them."
"We have a vet who volunteers here, and she's in today. She'll examine her. She's in good hands," said Beca.
Denise had the woman sign some papers as Beca walked the dog back to the exam room.
"Who do we have here?" asked Chloe.
"Izzy," said Beca. "Surrendered due to owner's death. The woman's daughter was so sad to give her up."
"That happens," said Chloe. "Better to give her to us so we can care for her. Walk her over here to the scale."
Beca did as she was told.
"Okay," said Chloe, as she wrote down Izzy's weight. "Let's get her on the exam table." Chloe gently lifted the dog, who was whining a little. Beca gently pet the dog while Chloe did an exam.
As she was examining Izzy's lower abdomen, Chloe said, "She has a mass here. I'm going to have to look at that more closely soon."
"What does that mean?" asked Beca.
"I can't tell yet. It could be harmless, or it could be cancer."
"Not cancer!"
"I hope not, but I won't be able to tell until I remove it and have a biopsy done. I'll have to do that at the animal hospital." Chloe continued the exam. When she examined Izzy's teeth, she said, "She's also going to need a dental. Her teeth are a mess, and that could lead to other problems if we don't take care of them."
"The woman told us her mother hadn't been able to take her for checkups lately."
"Yeah. I can see that. I'm going to take her over to the animal hospital after work. I can do the surgery and the dental there. I have more tools there, and I can send the mass out for a biopsy from there to see what it is. You can watch me if you like. It's a good experience for your major."
"Sure," said Beca.
"In the meantime, you should take her over to CR and get her a bath."
"You got it," said Beca. She left the room to take Izzy over to CR. "Chloe says Izzy needs a bath. She'll take her over to the animal hospital and operate on her there later today."
The rest of the day was fairly busy. A lot of people came to the shelter. Someone brought in a stray they'd found in their yard, and several other people adopted animals. As the shelter closed its doors for the evening, Beca texted her dad to let him know she'd be staying late to help Dr. Beale with a surgery.
"Ready?" Chloe asked Beca as she and Izzy headed for the front door.
"Yup," said Beca. "I just had to let my dad know I would be home later."
"I don't want to take you away from him."
"It's fine," said Beca. "We didn't have plans or anything. I'm with him all summer. I just wanted to let him know where I was. He worries."
"I think all parents do," said Chloe.
Beca followed Chloe to the animal hospital.
"Hey, Aubrey," said Chloe. "This is Beca. She volunteers at the shelter, and she wants to be a vet tech. I thought this would be a good experience for her."
"Hi," said Beca, as she shook the woman's hand. Aubrey was really pretty. She looked to be about the same age as Chloe, with blonde hair and green eyes.
"Nice to meet you," said Aubrey. "So, you want to be a vet tech?"
"Yeah," said Beca. "I started volunteering last summer, and the animals stole my heart."
"They do that," said Aubrey.
Beca watched as the two women prepped Izzy for surgery, explaining what they were doing along the way.
"Can you take notes while we work?" asked Aubrey. "I'd normally have someone else do that, but it's just us here."
"Okay," said Beca, taking a chart from Aubrey.
Chloe started with dental work. "Okay, I extracted a couple of her teeth that were starting to abscess."
"There, Izzy," said Chloe to the sleeping dog. "That's going to feel so much better when you wake up. Those teeth probably hurt you. Now, let's see what's going on with your tummy."
Chloe worked quickly to remove the mass, taking a sample to be sent for a biopsy.
"Any idea what it is, Mensa?"
"Aubrey!"
Aubrey glanced over at Beca and winced. "Sorry," Beca heard Aubrey whisper.
"I don't think it's serious," said Chloe. "But we should get it checked. The lab is going to be able to tell us whether or not it's cancer and the likelihood of a recurrence." Beca figured Chloe was adding that for her, and she appreciated Chloe graciously sharing her knowledge.
"Got it," said Beca. "What happens if it's cancer?"
"Well," said Chloe. "We won't put her up for regular adoption. She'll likely go to a foster home. We have a lot of fosters who take care of pets that are old and/or sick. Every once in a while, we find people willing to adopt a sick animal, but that doesn't usually happen."
"So, you won't put her down?" asked Beca.
"We only euthanize animals that are deathly ill with no quality of life. As long as Izzy is happy and comfortable, we're happy to let her live her life."
"Oh, good," said Beca.
Chloe finished the surgery, and once Izzy was out of surgery and calm, they put the dog in one of the boarding rooms at the animal hospital.
"Okay, Izzy's all good. I'll keep her here at the hospital while her dental work and stitches heal. Once we know what's going on with that mass, we'll bring her back to the shelter, assuming all is well," said Chloe. "Do you two want to get dinner? My treat."
"Can't," said Aubrey. "I have to check on my mom. My brother is working late."
"Send her my best," said Chloe.
"I can join you," said Beca. "Let me just text my dad real quick."
Favorite Daughter: Dad, I'm getting dinner with Dr. Beale Professor Dad: Have fun
"Okay. I'm all set," said Beca.
"I'll drive unless you want to," said Chloe.
"I don't have a car, or my license, actually," said Beca. "I either walk, or Stacie or my dad drives me."
"Okay, then I guess I'll drive, and I can take you home afterward if you like."
"That would be great, thanks."
"Where do you want to eat?"
Beca shrugged. "I'm not picky."
"What do you think of Indian food?" asked Chloe.
"Love it," said Beca.
"I know a place," said Chloe. She drove the two of them to a small place not far from the animal hospital.
After they sat down and ordered their food, the two of them began to talk.
"So, what did you think of your freshman year of college?" asked Chloe.
"It was tough," said Beca. "I didn't get along too well with my roommate, and I struggled with some of my classes. I managed, though."
"Did you find a new roommate for next year?" asked Chloe.
"No," said Beca. "But just about anyone has to be better than Kimmy Jin. You know, I didn't even know if she spoke English at first. She didn't say a single word to me for an entire month."
"Crazy."
"Thanks for letting me see another surgery. It was kind of you to explain what you were doing."
"It was my pleasure."
"Do you ever get used to it?"
"Used to what?"
"Seeing animals who have been abused or mistreated."
"No, and I'm not sure that's a bad thing. It does hurt my heart a lot to see animals in pain, but I think it makes me a better vet."
"I guess that makes sense when you put it that way. How long has Aubrey worked with you?"
"I guess it's been about two years, but I've known her since we were kids."
"Really?"
"Yeah. We were in a children's choir together when we were little. We sang the national anthem at a couple of sports games. We did a lot of little performances at nursing homes and stuff like that, and we always had our own concerts a couple of times a year."
"How long were you in the group?"
"I started at age six, and I stopped when I was fourteen. We age out at sixteen, but I was too busy at fourteen to continue."
Beca knew that was the age in which Chloe had graduated college. She didn't want to let on that she knew Chloe's history, so she simply hummed in understanding.
"So, what about you? What did you do for fun when you were a kid?" asked Chloe.
"I tried a few things when I was little. I tried a few sports, but nothing held my interest. I took dance lessons throughout elementary school. I discovered I liked singing in middle school, and I was part of an all-girls' choir in high school. I even attended a choir camp. Dorky, I know."
"Oh, I would have been all over choir camp as a teenager."
"It was fun, but most people just think it's weird. In my high school, I swear it wasn't dorky to be in band or choir."
Chloe appeared to be deep in thought for a few beats before responding. "I wouldn't know."
"Why not?" asked Beca, even though she knew the answer.
"I was homeschooled. I...graduated early."
"Oh, that's cool," said Beca.
Dinner arrived before they could discuss the subject further. Beca decided she'd let Chloe decide how much she wanted to share and when she wanted to share it.
The two of them just chatted and enjoyed each other's company for the rest of the meal.
Once dinner was over, Chloe drove Beca home. "Thanks for the ride, Chloe. See you next time!"
"Anytime, Beca."
Beca smiled to herself as she walked into the house. "Hi, Dad. Hi, Holly." The dog trotted up to Beca in greeting.
"What, or should I say who has you smiling?"
"Nothing and nobody."
"Sure, Beca."
"I just really enjoyed my night. I got to see another surgery, and I got Indian food after."
"So, is it the food or the company?"
"Dad!"
Beca's dad put his hands up in mock surrender. "Okay, I won't pry. I've got to turn in. Goodnight, Beca."
"Night, Dad."
Holly followed Beca into her room. Beca lifted the dog onto her bed and remembered to look online as Chloe had suggested for steps or a ramp to help her onto the bed. She picked a few out and decided she'd discuss options with her dad in the morning. She was willing to pay, but Holly would be living with her dad most of the year. She figured he should have some say in what she purchased.
Izzy's biopsy came back that the mass was not cancerous, and it only had a very slim chance of reoccurring. Once she was healed from her surgery, she went to the shelter and was adopted within a few days.
Beca and her dad got Holly a ramp, and Holly seemed to really enjoy independently climbing onto Beca's bed.
Things continued in a similar fashion throughout the summer. Chloe frequently brought in animals, usually when her brother called. Chloe explained to Beca that Steven usually called her for the more severe abuse cases as the animal control people would usually euthanize these animals. Beca would usually end up observing Chloe if any of these animals needed surgery. She'd even befriended Aubrey. Both Chloe and Aubrey always took time to explain to Beca what they were doing and why. Beca was thankful for the example, and she felt like she would be more prepared for the classes in her major once she returned to college that fall.
As far as things went personally, the others at the shelter frequently teased Beca for her obvious crush on Chloe. They all swore up and down that Chloe was just as smitten with Beca, but Beca herself never saw it. Chloe was nice to just about everyone, and Beca still felt like nothing would ever happen beyond friendship with the woman.
A/N: There's another part to the second summer, but it was too long. I'll have the other half posted soon!

A Not So Little Update Post On Life
So it’s been a while since I’ve done one of the blog posts. Not by choice though. Life has been hectic!
Dad
So one of the biggest changes for me has been walking into a full-time caring role for my father who is challenging at the best of times because he likes the world to operate on his terms and that’s not how life works. At times I struggle to get him to see the seriousness of his situation.
He has long term health issues which include chronic alcohol abuse leading to memory issues and seizures when he undergoes withdrawal. He’s also only partially compliant with taking his medication which leads to further issues.
On top of that he had a valve replaced a few years ago with a metal one which means his blood clotting level needs to be monitored regularly and at the moment he’s like a rollercoaster going between so thick it’s like cheese to so thin it’s like water.
It’s also not helped by the fact my father is also essentially homeless and couch surfing with friends and refusing to even entertain any option that would cost more than $100/week. He’s dreaming if he thinks he’ll find anything at that rate because he won’t but because a mate of his will charge him that much to sleep on his couch he now compares everything else to that -_-
Uni
The other big thing which I think I’ve mentioned before has been uni. I went back to study to finish off my bachelor of Information Technology off. I have about a year’s worth of work left but doing it at part-time rate since I’ve been caring for my father.
Passed 1 of 2 subjects last semester which was my first semester. Got an additional exam for the other subject. Missed passing the final exam by 8 marks which means no subject pass even though I have the marks to pass :(
Only doing one subject this semester but will sit two exams in exam period. The additional exam from last semester and the exam for this subject. I’m hoping I can do this. A touch anxious because despite dropping back to one subject I’m still struggling to find time thanks to my father.
So 2 weeks ago my father was admitted to hospital confused thinking it was 1999 again. I spent a week concerned about him. Then 2 days ago I was admitted briefly for a few hours.
Viral Illness
For the last 6 days I’ve been suffering what I think is just a common cold but it has beat the living crap out of me. On triage at the hospital I had a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius or 100.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
I was also highly dehydrated despite drinking perhaps 4 litres or more of water every day for the previous 4 days. Alas none of the water was being absorbed and was just passing through me.
I also had a heart rate of 130 beats per minute which is only like 40 more beats than I’d normally have.
So they started me on a bag of fluids and got me some pain relief for my throat which by this stage was making it all but impossible to swallow food or liquids. About 30 minutes into the bag of fluids they checked me again and my temperature had gone up to 39.1 degrees Celsius or 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit. Yikes! Another 30 minutes later and my temp was back at 38 degrees Celsius or 100.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
Then the lovely nurse I knew gave me some steroids to reduce the swelling in my throat and started some antibiotics to cover their butts in case bacterial(I don’t think it’s bacterial but anyway).
Quite a few people commented that the colour has returned to my face after the bag of fluids. I began to realise little things like the return of saliva generation, the reduction in my thirst desire which I’d just not really registered in the 4 days prior. I was drinking automatically when I needed it but not really registering I was thirsty.
After everything I felt a lot more alert and more like myself. I wasn’t shivering every 5 seconds too. Just before discharge they checked my obs again and temp was down to 37.2  I think degrees Celsius or 98.96 degrees Fahrenheit. I remember 37 point something at least. Almost normal as I think it’s 36.7 for normal. My heart rate came back from 130 beats per minute to 100 beats per minute which was much better too.
So as you can see I’ve had a hell of a week with a raging fever and cough and sore throat. On Tuesday evening I reckon I might have been a good 39 or even 40 degrees Celsius / 102.2 or even 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
So consequently I’m now so far behind on an assignment due this week. Hoping I’m granted special consideration for it. Between my dad last week and me this week I’ve been unable to work on it. It’s not hard but it will require a clear head and time neither of which I’ve been able to find.
Church & Christianity
Now the other big news. So I’m not sure if I’ve said it here or much here but I think it’s worth sharing.
So 7 and 3/4 months ago I started going to church with my neighbours. At first it was an exercise in curiosity and intellect. I learned heaps and found sooooooo many assumptions I’d made were sooooooooo wrong too.
Remember kids, Never Judge a Book By Its Cover! And that goes for the Holy Bible too!
Seriously though I’d never read it and made assumptions from what little I did know. I was made a fool of to myself for that. I was glad to know the truth first hand for myself.
What I never expected was to believe. In all this time I’ve been skeptical and questioned everything and you know what? It stacks up more than you might expect.
What has struck me the most is when you read through what Jesus went through in that final week leading up to his crucifixion. It becomes pretty clear that the horror of what is about to happen begins to really set in for Jesus.
Through Year 11 at high school I took Ancient History for a subject. I looked at Emperor Nero and the burning of Rome. Consequently I got to know Tacitus’s work very well and I quite respect him as a historian. He speaks about Jesus.
Tacitus was a Roman senator. He was born within a few years after Jesus’s death and he was no fan of Christians or Jesus and was VERY loyal to the Roman empire, yet he speaks with such confidence of the death of Jesus you have to ask why would he lie? To me this along with the likely medical evidence of what he went through says Jesus died on the cross.
It was a pretty gruesome death. He essentially suffocated to death in agonizing pain and according to the Bible he was fully conscious of what was happening until the last moment when he finally grew too weak to be able to inhale again.
So the striking bit, the striking bit is that despite all that, Jesus WILLINGLY went through it all. How many people can you say that would do that? That would suffer an unbelievably painful death to save another?
That’s such a profound love that it’s almost incomprehensible. We see mirrors of that behaviour in tragedies we experience. I think about the one of the cars that drove down one of the streets in Melbourne and people pushed others out of the way of the car to save them only to be collected themselves. That’s love, incredible love!
That’s why I so really.....well love this passage from Romans 5, because I think it captures the whole idea and act of love so well.
6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
- Romans 5 : 6 - 11
The other thing I never expected was to be poked back when I started poking Christianity. I can’t explain it.....or well I can’t scientifically explain it but when I pray God hears me and my prayers are answered.
Mental health
Getting to know Jesus and through Jesus God has been one of the best things for me. So the word Gospel means good news and truthfully this has been good news, this has been the best news of my life.
Quite literally it has saved my life. And I don’t mean like saved from being thrown into hell. I mean saved from taking my own life by suicide saved.
Before as readers should know, I had a pretty hopeless outlook on life. I would describe it as a nihilistic hoplessness because it really was that bad.
So I went to my church’s Good Friday and Easter Sunday services. The minister preaching then on Easter Sunday said “death removes the meaning from life”. It profoundly changed the way I looked at everything!
It all struck me and made sense to me on that Good Friday but it was Easter Sunday that transformed my life and filled me with hope.
Suddenly everything mattered in the light of the idea of eternal life. For you see even our greatest buildings will be consumed in more or less 1000 years. At that point what can we do that will last? Nothing!
But if we live after death then the most valuable thing we have is our relationships and how we treat other people. And that means what I do now will have a lasting impact because I will remember what I’ve done and so will they.
That means every action now has meaning, from something as simple as helping an elderly person reach something at the supermarket to how I speak about my life to other people.
I have begun to change in response to this too. Fear no longer rules my life.
I find that lots of the Bible is true, for example when Jesus says:
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
- Matthew 11 : 29 - 30
I find that this is very true. The burden is far less than I put upon myself and I bear the world on my shoulders as the Titan Atlas did/does.
I have been so profoundly changed for the good by my belief I got baptized last Sunday. I froze my arse off too :P
Despite that it was a wonderful day and I want to share with all of you the profoundly good news and great gift I have found in Christianity and my church.
While I know not everyone is interested, can I encourage anyone who is to take a chance, to really go all in. Look at me, I tried to take my own life in the past twice no less and yet I have been given the greatest gift - a life of hope and love by daring to take a chance. If I can go from nihilistic hopelessness to a life of hope and love then why not give it a shot?
What’s the worst that can happen eh? Worst is that nothing changes but I think you’ll find more than that because there’s something about Christianity that’s beautiful and healing.
To give you some insight. I’ve been struggling with self-harm thoughts for a long time, more than a decade. The other night while I was very ill and not coping I had to deal with them again. I said no and pushed back against them. It’s the first time I said no and didn’t self-harm myself despite the thoughts.
I have changed. I have grown, I have healed and I am healing and I am loved and I love and I have hope and NONE of this would have been possible without church and Christianity. It’s truly profoundly changed my life for the better!
Game Jam & Closing Stuff
So as you can see my life has been hectic hey? I haven’t given up on video games either :D
I started having a crack at GMC Jam a few weeks ago but well dad ate my time up. I did get something started though. I should finish it though.
Tumblr media
And yes that is a giant infinite column of spawning slimes :P
And yes I noticed my tiles needed a bit of adjusting and offsetting to make them a touch bit better but that’s cool. I was impressed I got like 4 variations with minimal work to add variety.
The player also animates just in a still image that’s hard to show.
Just been so stupidly busy I just haven’t had the time for video games! But I wanted to share some of my life and give a bit of an update on things because well it might be a while before I can get another one of these little......well not so little update posts out.

(META) Concrete thinkers, incapable of metaphor, are gate-keeping mathematics and eroding its most powerful property: abstraction.
Earlier today, I posted about the fascinating similarity between fractals and logarithmic functions. Though it stated in the first line that it resided in the conceptual realm, a boo-boo w/ a metaphor I used got the post flamed by a literalist. I deleted it out of cowardice. I shouldn't have. Whoops. I'm not wrong to connect the two concepts. When I get better in these fields' Algebras*, more will be written on this. But it indicated a larger problem...
In Lex Fridman's podcast w/ Grant Sanderson, creator of 3Blue1Brown on YouTube (link below), he discussed 3 types of mathematicians: the puzzle-solvers, the physicists (broadly speaking here...), and those who "love abstraction and the power of generality." Certainly, this list is incomplete, but in a way that proves my point here. Throughout history, the mathematical greats who invented our studies in school, the Newtons and Eulers, were *wizards* of abstraction. Evidenced not only by their discoveries - take calculus, for example; the study of the behavior of infinitesimals - but by their prolific generations in disparate domains like Great Literature. Chock-full of metaphor and analogy, these thinkers thought deeply and solved even bigger problems. Through generality, they invented the frameworks our bachelor and grad degrees. They are our revered ancestors.
In the early 20th century, Abstractionists like Turing, Goedel, and the analytical demigod John von Neumann, trail blazed computational science. They needed insanely computationally complicated equations solved, so dammit, they put theirs minds to work. Using what they had already grasped, broke new ground via abstraction. We're indebted to the pioneer-class. They used their heads, drawing on intuition, the pattern-recognition software innate to homo sapiens.
Since the mid-1970s, it seems, (though cannot be verified via a gate-keeping function known as "peer review", check out Game Theory on Wikipedia for more information) that our technological prowess, the empirical furnace that has been alight since the dawn of the 17th century, has been burnt down to embers. Occasionally, we see a noteworthy digital innovation from the Valley. But outside of the strictly IT universe, astonishingly little. We go to college, then grad school, then some PhD program to learn complicated theories about complicated things so that we can handle minutia. Everything seems disparate because each course takes the top-down approach. We start at such a high level that half the class gets 65% on the first exam and drops out. The tech- or research-bound students are starving for some application, but the semester ends before that section of the textbook is covered. It almost seems malicious. The pattern-recognition software I referred to works from the ground up. It's quite clear for those familiar with psych and neuroscience. So if we are always fed the abstraction, our grass-roots, evolved, intuitive brains have nowhere to go with it. We can't perform the abstraction on our own, as they we're not allowed to have access to that part of the toolkit. We go into the workforce with a litany of equations our brains have vaguely mapped to {insert technical field here.} Then we wind up in sales jobs to pay the bills. In Business Schools (where I come from), it's even worse. They don't even apply calculus (dare I mention stochastic calculus or Brownian motion...spooky!) in economics class until grad school because they think our tiny Microsoft Excel brains would explode. For a concrete example here, it took me three years after college to the connect the dots on 'derivative', the tool of calculus, and 'derivative' the financial security class most known for its hand in 2008.
In any domain, when things begin to fall into place, divergent from complexity and into alignment, we find emergent simplicity. Our ancestors called it discovery, "innovation" better fits millennial vernacular. When things continue become increasingly muddled and complex, it's called stagnation. Stagnation in the Information Age no less. As a 24-year old debating a future in an expensive and unproductive graduate program or my soul's slow death in Big Corporate, I truly hope momentum will change on this one. Lets's ask more questions, make more mistakes, make more irresponsibly logical leaps (when the downside to said leap is low), do less incremental improvement, and math the s*** out of our future. Instead of worrying about today's hyped problem like the Middle East, climate change, {pick your favorite}, perhaps we could...maybe...just maybe...solve them? Let's use this beautiful, logical, intensely rigorous toolkit we've been gifted by our ancients, MATH, to solve the problems of the future.
PS - Please tear apart my ideas if you'd like. But, if you flame me ad-hominem style, you're just proving my point on this...gate-keeping ruins math.
_____
* Algebra is a anglo-bastardization (hope this isn't a swearword that get's me deleted) of 'al-jabr,' meaning 'bone-setting,' literally referring to how we move the 'bones' around on paper. Thank god the Arab world kept the mathematical lamp burning throughout the European Dark Ages. Why don't the literalists explain the meaning of this word...ever? Not even in high school? Because they take things for granted and don't read.
**I didn't make the mistake of apologizing for my learning issues in this post, unlike its predecessor. If you're still reading this, you're not the type to idiotically flame something thought out Reddit-style. Many mathematical greats have had issues in the over-structured, 100 equations in 30 minutes-classroom setting. Two examples are Albert Einstein and John Nash. The former worked in a patent-office because 1900s Barvaria didn't like that he was scatter-brained (or that he was Jewish; over-structured societies are more prone to racism, also known as tribal affinity); the latter, lived his 30s thru 70s deluded by the menacing condition of Paranoid Schizophrenia. The chiding he received in elementary, secondary, and university-level academia played a significant role in his social disconnect. See Isaacson's Einstein and Nassar's A Beautiful Mind to learn more. I'm not suggesting that I possess a mind bearing an ounce of resemblance with these legends, or any others. What I am suggesting, however, is that there are at least a few greats among us who are being crowded out of our institutions, and given an "ADHD"/"Dyslexic"/"Aspergers" diagnoses for their trouble. Why do we continue to call bright kids with learning superpowers 'learning disabled'?

Jersey Jazzman: The PARCC, Phil Murphy, and Some Common Sense
Jersey Jazzman: The PARCC, Phil Murphy, and Some Common Sense
Miss me?
I'll tell you what I've been up to soon, I promise. I'm actually still in the middle of it... but I've been reading and hearing a lot of stuff about education policy lately, and I've decided I can't just sit back -- even if my time is really at a premium these days -- and let some of it pass.
For example:
Gov. Phil Murphy just announced that he will start phasing out the PARCC test, our state's most powerful diagnostic tool for student achievement.
Like an MRI scan, it can detect hidden problems, pinpointing a child's weaknesses, and identifying where a particular teacher's strategy isn't working. This made it both invaluable, and a political lighting rod.
That's from our old friends at the Star-Ledger op-ed page. And, of course, the NY Post never misses a chance to take down both a Democrat and the teachers unions:
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is already making good on his promises to the teachers unions. Too bad it’s at the kids’ expense.
[...]
Officially, he wants the state to transition to a new testing system — one that’s less “high stakes and high stress.” It’s a safe bet that the future won’t hold anything like the PARCC exams, which are written by a multi-state consortium. Instead, they’ll be Jersey-only tests — far easier to water down into meaninglessness.
The sickest thing about this: A couple of years down the line, Murphy will be boasting about improved high-school graduation rates — without mentioning the fact that his “reforms” have made many of those diplomas worthless.
First of all -- and as I have pointed out in great detail -- it's the Chris Christie-appointed former superintendents of Camden and Newark, two districts under state control, who have done the most bragging about improved graduation rates. These "improvements" have taken place under PARCC; however, it's likely they are being driven by things like credit recovery programs, which have nothing to do with high school testing.
The Post wants us to believe that the worth of a high school diploma is somehow enhanced by implementing high school testing above and beyond what is required by federal law. But there's no evidence that's true.
In 2016-17, only 12 states required students to pass a test to graduate; the only other state requiring passing the PARCC is New Mexico. Further, as Stan Karp at ELC has pointed out, the PARCC passing rate on the Grade 10 English Language Test in 2017 was 46%; the passing rate on the Algebra I exam was 42%. That's three years after the test was first introduced into New Jersey.
Does the Post really want to withhold diplomas from more than half of New Jersey's students?
The PARCC was never designed to be a graduation exit exam. The proficiency rates -- which I'll talk about more below -- were explicitly set up to measure college readiness. It's no surprise that around 40 percent of students cleared the proficiency bar for the PARCC, and around 40 percent of adults in New Jersey have a bachelors degree.
I don't know when we decided everyone should go to a four-year college. If we really believe that, we'll have a lot of over-educated people doing necessary work, and we'll have to more than double the number of college seats available. Anyone think that's a good idea? NY Post, should New Jersey jack up taxes by an insane amount to open up its state colleges to more than twice as many students as they have now?
Let's move on to the S-L's editorial. The idea that the PARCC is somehow the "most powerful diagnostic tool" for identifying an individual child's weaknesses, and therefore the flaws in an individual teacher's practice, is simply wrong. The most obvious reason why the PARCC is not used for diagnosing individual students' learning progress is that by the time the school gets the score back, the student has already moved on to the next grade and another teacher.
There are, in fact, many other assessment tools available to teachers -- including plenty of tests that are not designed by the student's teacher -- that can give actionable feedback on a student's learning progress. This is the day-to-day business of teaching, taught to those of us in the field at the very beginning of our training: set objectives, instruct, assess, adjust objectives and/or instruction, assess, etc.
The PARCC, like any statewide test, might have some information useful to school staff as a child moves from grade-to-grade. But the notion that it is "invaluable" for its MRI-like qualities is just not accurate. How do I know?
Because the very officials at NJDOE during the Christie administration who pushed the PARCC so hard admitted it was not designed to inform instruction:
youtube
ERLICHSON: In terms of testing the full breadth and depth of the standards in every grade level, yes, these are going to be tests that in fact are reliable and valid at multiple cluster scores, which is not true today in our NJASK. But there’s absolutely a… the word "diagnostic" here is also very important. As Jean sort of spoke to earlier: these are not intended to be the kind of through-course — what we’re talking about here, the PARCC end-of-year/end-of-course assessments — are not intended to be sort of the through-course diagnostic form of assessments, the benchmark assessments, that most of us are used to, that would diagnose and be able to inform instruction in the middle of the year.
These are in fact summative test scores that have a different purpose than the one that we’re talking about here in terms of diagnosis.
That purpose is accountability. That's something I, and every other professional educator I know, is all for -- provided the tests are used correctly.
As I've written before, I am generally agnostic about the PARCC. From what I saw, the NJASK didn't seem to be a particularly great test... but I'll be the first to admit I am not a test designer, nor a content specialist in math or English language arts.
The sample questions I've seen from the PARCC look to me to be subject to something called construct-irrelevant variance, a fancy way of saying test scores can vary based on stuff you're trying not to measure. If a kid can't answer a math question because the question uses vocabulary the kid doesn't know, that question isn't a good assessor of the kid's mathematical ability; the scores on that item are going to vary based on something other than the things we really want to measure.
As I said, I'm not the best authority on the alleged merits of the PARCC over the NJASK (ask folks like this guy instead, who really knows what he's talking about when it comes to teaching kids how to read). I only wish the writers at the Star-Ledger had a similar understanding of their own limitations:
If this were truly for the sake of over-tested students, we wouldn't be starting with the PARCC. Unlike its predecessors, this test can tell educators exactly where kids struggle and how to better tailor their lessons. It's crucial for helping to close the achievement gap between black and white students; not just between cities and suburbs, but within racially mixed districts.
Again: the PARCC is a lousy tool for informing instruction, because that's not its job. The PARCC is an accountability measure -- and as such, there is very little reason to believe it is markedly better at identifying schools or teachers in need of remediation than any other standardized test.
Think about it this way: if the PARCC was really that much better than the NJASK, we'd expect the two tests to yield very different results. A school that was "lying" to its parents about its scores on the NJASK would instead show how it was struggling on the PARCC. There would be little correlation between the two tests if one was so much better than the other, right?
Guess what?
These are the Grade 7 English Language Arts (ELA) test scores on the 2014 NJASK and 2015 PARCC, the year it was first used in New Jersey. Each dot is a school around the state. Look at the strong relationship: if a school has a low score on the NJASK in 2014, it had a low score on the PARCC in 2015. Similarly, if it was high in 2014 on the NJASK, it was high on the 2015 PARCC. 80 percent of the variation on the PARCC can be explained by last year's score on the NJASK; that is a very strong relationship.
I'll put some more of these below, but let me point out one more thing: the students who took the Grade 7 NJASK in 2014 were not the same students who took the Grade 7 PARCC in 2015, because most students moved up a grade. How did the test scores of the same cohort compare when they moved from Grade 7, when they took the NJASK, to Grade 8, when they took the PARCC?
Still an extremely strong relationship.
No one who knows anything about testing is going to be surprised by this. Standardized tests, by design, yield normal, bell-curve distributions of scores: a few kids score low, a few score high, and most score in the middle. There's just no evidence to think the NJASK was "lying" back then any more than the PARCC "lies" now.
And let me anticipate the argument about "proficiency":
Again, I've been over this more than a few times: "proficiency" rates are largely arbitrary. When you have a normal distribution of scores, you can set the rate pretty much wherever you want, depending on how you define "proficient." I know that makes some of you crazy, but it's true: there is no absolute definition of "proficient," any more than there's an absolute definition of "smart."
So, no, the NJASK wasn't "lying" about NJ students' proficiency; the state could have used the same distribution of scores from the older test* and set a different proficiency level. And no, the PARCC is not in any way important as a diagnostic tool, nor is there any evidence it is a much "better" test than the old NJASK.
Look, I know this bothers some of you, but I am for accountability testing. The S-L is correct in noting that these tests have played an important role in pointing out inequities within the education system. I am part of a team that works on these issues, and we've relied on standardized tests to show that there are serious problems with our nation's current school funding system.
But if that's the true purpose of these tests -- and it's clear that it is -- then we don't need to spend as much time or money on testing as we do now. If we choose to use test outcomes appropriately, we can cut back on testing and remove some of the corrupting pressures they can impose on the system.
ADDING: This is not the first time I've written about the PARCC fetishism.
ADDING MORE: Does it strike any of you as odd that both the NY Post and the Star-Ledger came out with similar editorials beating up Governor Murphy and the teachers unions over his new PARCC policy -- on the very same day?
As I've documented here: when it comes to education (and many other topics), editorial writers often rely on the professional "reformers" in their Rolodexes to feed them ideas. If there is a structural advantage these "reformers" have over folks like me, it's that they get paid to make the time to influence op-ed writers and other policy influencers. They are subsidized, usually by very wealthy interests, to cultivate relationships with the media, which in turn bends the media toward their point of view.
One would hope editorial boards could see this past this state of affairs. Alas...
ADDING MORE: From the NJDOE website:
A GUIDE TO PARENT/TEACHER CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THE PARCC SCORE REPORTS
ABOUT INDIVIDUAL STUDENT SCORES a) What if my child is doing well in the classroom and on his or her report card, but it is not reflected in the test score?
PARCC is only one of several measures that illustrate a child’s progress in math and ELA. Report card grades can include multiple sources of information like participation, work habits, group projects, homework, etc., that are not reflected in the PARCC score, so there may be a discrepancy.
Report cards can also reflect outcomes on tests made by teachers, districts, or other vendors, administered multiple times. The PARCC, like any test, is subject to noise and bias. It is quite possible a report card grade is the better measure of an individual student's learning than a PARCC score.
If there is a disconnect between the PARCC and a report card, OK, parents and teachers and administrators should look into that. But I take the above statement from NJDOE as an acknowledgment that the PARCC, or any other test, is a sample of learning at a particular time, and it's outcomes are subject to error and bias like any other assessment.
Again: by all means, let's have accountability testing. But PARCC fetishism in the service of teachers union bashing is totally unwarranted. Stop the madness.
SCATTERPLOT FUN! Here are some other correlations between NJASK and PARCC scores at the school level. You'll see the same pattern in all grades and both exams (ELA and math) with the exception of Grade 8 math. Why? Because the PARCC introduced the Algebra 1 exam; Grade 8 students who take algebra take that exam, while those who don't take algebra take the Grade 8 Math exam.
The Algebra 1 results are some of the most interesting ones available, for a whole variety of reasons. I'll get into that in a bit...
* OK, I need to make this clear: there was an issue with the NJASK having a bit of a ceiling effect. I've always found it kind of funny when people got overly worried about this: like the worst thing for the state was that so many kids were finding the old test so easy, too many were getting perfect scores!
Whether the PARCC broke through the ceiling with construct-relevant variance is an open question. My guess is a lot of the "higher-level" items are really measuring something aside from mathematical ability. In any case, the NJASK wasn't "lying" just because more kids aced it than the PARCC.

Extreme difficulty of the OAB take a look at certainly is the principal criticism of bachelors
Learners and regulation graduates are dissatisfied when using the Assessment of Order, evidence for the Brazilian Bar Affiliation (OAB), which grants to people permitted the necessary registration for the practice of legislation. The controversial points surrounding the choice carry out.   To close the series, abide by testimonies that sort a mosaic in the different profiles of scholars and bachelors in Law of Brazil. Typically, they are simply essential to the exam. Ambiguous troubles, deficiency of transparency inside approach, subjective criteria during the correction, very little time for resolution and high priced registration cost are some for the details raised.   Even though acknowledging the necessity of some sort of prior range for foreseeable future lawyers, the exaggerated diploma of issue on the proof may be a recurring notion, even amid people who have by now been accredited and defended. This great degree of desire provides for the anguish to enter the labor market place and friends and family stress towards the features that make the path towards the career even more tricky.
To determine extra head over to curso para passar na oab   See reports and what college students and law pupils suppose:   Norma Desireé Barbosa Fortini, 27, celebrates graduation along with her husband, but cannot get an OAB   I have a legislation diploma from PUC-RS, but I deliver the results for a marketing consultant at Natura I did the OAB test 4 periods, but I did not endure to your next stage extremely close to. Missed two or three hits. Its challenging to obtain a employment only using a diploma, for the reason that they need the lawyer's or trainee's license. Even a regulation graduate from PUC-RS, I operate as being a marketing consultant for Natura, earning R$ five hundred. The market could be very saturated in Porto Alegre and has workplaces that pay back fewer than a minimum income. With every single disapproval we have on out and decreased our self-esteem. I find myself a dumb particular person, but I am not, for the reason that I did 5 years of good faculty, graduation work and defense with banking. To be a stockbroker, he had to accomplish well. I completed the PUC-RS paying R$ one,250 once a month (while not a scholarship could be R$ two,500). I've power, I know the content material, although the difficulty within the test can be quite awesome. They make an assessment to go as number of persons as possible. It is really in the standard of a public contest, when it must only attest that you have the opportunity to advocate. Won't quit. I would like a public defender, general public prosecutor, I would like to be a judge. This can be my desire and i can get there. But for this I need to advocate for a minimum of two decades. I acquired expecting inside previous yr of school and at this time I've a small daughter to lift. I want to concentrate on my scientific studies to go this blessed check, but it can be very hard to center on lacking diapers in your daughter. " Norma Desireé Barbosa Fortini, 27 many years outdated, holds a bachelor's degree in Law, graduated in 2009 from PUC-RS   The OAB portfolio is not any warranty that you simply can make money   "I am retired, former metalworker and at present I function as true estate broker. I decided to do Legislation mainly because I preferred to possess a bigger degree. The program will help me in my existing occupation, while in the documentation section, to make clear the civil place for that shoppers. I have to do the subsequent OAB exam, and that is open up, but I tend not to agree with all the examination. They would like to assess my 5 years of faculty in two exams. I have significantly better fiscal issues than a lot of classmates, but I locate the cost abusive. For me the examination is nickel-hunter and fails to support us in any way. The low amount of approval of Uniban is not going to issue me. In this particular final difficulty, I uncovered that 4 with the a hundred college students in my course have handed. I feel plenty of people you should not need to certainly be a law firm. Everybody knows that the OAB portfolio is no ensure that it'll generate profits. "   Soon after three unsuccessful attempts to get the Order's record, Rafael Alencastro Moll, twenty five, is undertaking course.   “I've been inside the business for 4 ages and had a specific thing relating to the exam I have certainly not noticed. I have labored at a regulation agency due to the fact I started higher education. I read all of us say it was complicated, nonetheless it was only when i commenced to take the checks that i realized how problematic they definitely had been. I've tried out 3 days. In all, I arrive shut, but I really do not access the quality to move on the next stage. There is certainly a good deal relating to the take a look at that we do not see in college or university proper, they are becoming a whole lot of details that we do not in reality use in practice. I've been with the company four ages back and there was a specific thing there which i certainly not observed. I'd not done college, but now I am executing it. It can be aiding an awful lot. I think that the Examination of Get is important to offer a selected 1, you will discover plenty of people unprepared for there. You will discover a lot of colleges that are not considerable. The exam really should assess the applicant, but I do think they're working on much more than that, almost a contest. "
To know more facts see simulado oab     I researched at Unip and passed first   "I graduated previous 12 months and handed the very first make an effort within the OAB examination. I had been lucky and that i could also depend on the family. My father and mom are lawyers, I interned in their workplaces, and i had the assist to generally be able to dedicate myself thoroughly to my scientific tests. I feel other professions suitable to the community fascination, including Engineering and Medicine, ought to have an OAB evaluation. The test rates loads of decoreba of the legislation and could require a minor even more authorized evaluation. My faculty does not have a good passing amount, but it surely has beneficial instructors, very good physical construction, an geared up library, and that i had obtain to each of the textbooks I required to create my monograph. "   In my working day, it had been not important to have a split. Presently, the take a look at is more difficult.   "I took the OAB examination when I completed university, and i passed primary. I took the primary test of Cespe (Middle for Variety and Advertising of Situations, answerable for the analysis until eventually 2009), which was organized by Vunesp, as a consequence of the annulment of test 134. The exam is composed exactly in that which you will not know in school, a lot less in São Francisco (Law-USP), whose concentration may be the humanistic development within the jurist. The knowledge on the dogmatic issues, for reasons of public examinations and use from the pro vocation, is fruit in the application of the college student, and consistently are going to be. USP kinds jurists with absolutely free, unbiased contemplating. Around the other hand, the downside of San Francisco certainly is the lack of didactics of some instructors, who can not transmit primary knowledge with the subjects, even with becoming beneficial pros. In my working day, it was not essential to take a split. Currently, I think the take a look at is a lot more difficult, demanding additional special knowledge. The evaluation need to be maintained simply because, from the lawful standpoint, there is certainly no offense in opposition to the Constitution. From a sensible standpoint, the assessment prevents semi-literates from moving into a occupation through which creating skills and standard experience of regulation are essential. And through evaluation these necessities are usually verified. It isn't like in medicine, the place the expert has passed a evidence of residence. A bachelors degree in regulation definitely must be analyzed right before having the ability to practice law. " Riccardo Napoli, 26, an attorney graduated from the College of São Paulo (USP) in 2007. João Paulo Gonçalvez did a two-year program and passed the 2nd attempt to the OAB   The proof has got to exist, nonetheless it need to be truthful.   "I however will not know if I'm likely to be an attorney, given that I constantly preferred to be a delegate." After I graduated, I became interested in law observe, and that i made a decision to give the Exam simply because I do think it would get additional plus much more problematic. but it has to be truthful.I think that the correction from the 2nd section checks, that is subjective, is ambiguous. The assessments are challenging, they are simply not intermediary. You can find many unfavorable schools along with the condition should acquire accountability, to evaluate extra and also to better their level to avoid people today from expending five years researching and then not with the ability to enter the occupation.Nevertheless the proof from the Purchase must exist sure, I think even all professions must have an analogous examination.I went on the 2nd attempt.I double-takeed and that i believe which was significant to direct my experiments on the check, however it is to color necessary subjects even as the courses are superficial. For me, the person's way of thinking relating to the day with the exam also counts m The next time I took the test, I used to be incredibly tranquil, I had been in a position to suppose superior and did just about everything. "   I do the whole practice, I just really don't indicator   "I concluded the Law training course in 2008 and also have already supplied the Purchase Test 3 periods, but I used to be not accredited. I belonged on the group defending the exam, but when i experienced access towards terrific judgment of the Deputy Legal professional Normal Rodrigo Janot Monteiro de Barros, who asked for his unconstitutionality, I confess which i improved my thoughts (the judgment was sent with the Federal Supreme Court docket, which examination this yr). In my past examination, the OAB demanded during the 2nd section an item that even the judiciary will not will need on the lawyers, the legal basis citation (the posting of legislation) to instruct the answers towards pro practice examination. I misplaced 2.eight points on account of that inside of a race worthy of 10 factors. I am absolutely confident that i am fit and ready to protect a person. I do the complete method, I just tend not to signal. An additional colleague symptoms. The OAB has increased the diploma of problems quite as opposed to time for resolution. I spent 4 several hours doing just the piece and still experienced the essay queries with letters a, b, c. In exercise, the lawyer has at the very least five days to produce a bit. I notice which the even more you review, the more you concern yourself and wonder. And it is a whole lot of 'banana peel' they place you to definitely slip. Too a whole lot ambiguity, two-way troubles. You'll find distinctive points of watch in legislation and you really don't know which inspecting financial institution to comply with. I am conversing with our colleagues: we are not finding out to work at NASA. "

The Back door
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” - Matthew 7:7
Often times, we asked and the door was opened. However, we don’t have the wisdom to recognize the tricks of opportunity.
“Opportunity knocks once.” But not in my case. It keeps on presenting itself to me but all I’ve done is to waste those.
Just a recap of my previous post, I got nominated for 2nd time application thru MPNP, but my friend revoked the sponsorship. And below opportunities were wasted because of the 2nd application with MPNP:
1) 2015 - NS RLMS - Nova Scotia Regional Labour Market Stream
I did not take the risk to apply at the same time with MPNP. All my documents were ready at that time and I am eligible for the Provincial program.
2) 2015 - FSW (Non Express Entry)
I did not intend to apply due to the pending 2nd re-application of MPNP. My NOC was listed as occupation in demand. All documents were also ready. I did not risk to apply too due to fear of trying or causing my MPNP application to be rejected.
3) 2015 - NB Info Session - July 2015
New Brunswick was unknown province of Canada to me at that time. NBPNP appears promising as you don’t need a sponsor/friend to be able to move to this province. The process and requirements slowly sinked in to me, submit EOI, attendance in the Information Session the province had conducted, NOC list, then later on you will be invited to apply to their province.
Still wasted, as I came to know the info session in Manila was over.
4) 2016 - NB - June 2016 Info Session
I am successful to register early quarter of the year for Aug 2016 Info Session. The schedule was moved a month earlier, June 2016. IELTS re-take done, Info Session done. My IELTS score was low and brought me a score of 65/100. Still unlucky to receive instant ITA’s from this Info Session nor to submit EOI. Work around, my wife need to take IELTS, OR I need to re-take IELTS as quickly as possible and get high scores.
Neither me nor my wife took the exam on same year as our attention got diverted due to my company relocating me from SG to California. Making the story short, it did not manifest after 6 months of process. Back to square one, USA nor Canadian dream was over. This time, I wanted to give up.
Then came 2017, missed opportunities still lurking around. As Napoleon Hill said, “Opportunities is tricky. It has a sly habit of slipping in by the back door, and often it comes disguised in the form of misfortune, or temporary defeat.”
And that is exactly what my experiences were. So I go on, fierce and focus this time. I said to my self, “I will be one of the immigrant that will come to Canada this year of 2017.”
Feb 2017 - NB AIPP Info Session, missed again. Reason, lack of monitoring  NB website. I registered into Info Session by Canadian Embassy Manila last March 2017, but was just a pure Information Session. Stirs my frustration and fuels more of my desire.
We decided to pursue the June 2016 Info Session that I attended. IELTS re-take done, my wife IELTS done in Feb 2017. But truly, opportunity is tricky NB EOI for priority 2 closed at the time we’ve decided to push thru our NB ticket to Canadian dream. Depression gives in for a while, but I continue to pray and ask for another chance.
SINP was the answer last Feb 2017. But same story goes, wasted. Returned application after 1.5 months due to missing documents. I am truly ignorant and first time to login into their site and it was open at that time. Filled up information as the time ticks, pressured to submit the application without reading that there were documents required to upload. As a consequence, failed again.
Instead of giving up, the desire becomes more stronger. The goal is getting more clearer. I joined whatsapp group to get some useful information and to share my journey as well.
My big break came June 2017, but challenges still present along the way. There was no straight path, but I accepted the risks wholeheartedly. And with guidance from Above I carry on.
June 28, 2017 - OINP announced that they will search below 400 CRS score. I am one of the lucky person who received NOI a day after. My CRS score is 321, NOC 2281. I did not waste a time, I’ve read their application guide.
I learnt from the guide that ECA need to be Bachelors degree. On same day I called the OINP office and confirmed the same. My ECA from WES is 3 yrs diploma. I was advised to either do a) re-assessment from different ECA body or b) challenge WES for the result of my ECA.
I did both, but till now option b has no response. Below were the obstacle course I’ve gone thru to get the option a done.
Obstacle 1) - TOR requirement from school for ECA re-assessment. I came from PUP, ECE 5 yr course. As per my previous experience TOR took 60 days.
-PUP website says 30 days (it is a working days not calendar days) for original TOR. 15 days for Certified True Copy of TOR. Thus I go for CTC.
-Phoned the registrar to see if expedite is an option, and yes it was. The process cuts down to 7 working days.
-I also requested the registrar to scan a copy of the CTC of TOR to ICES.
Obstacle 2) - Choosing which other ECA body will be more faster and might give me a bachelors degree.
-I chose ICES because a rush service is availale as I am bounded by time.
NOI is valid for 6 months from the date you received it, however you need to act fast enough to secure a seat. If the OINP HCP EE stream closes, then your NOI is just another waste. No one know when will the stream will re-open, and you won’t know if the time it re-opens if your NOI is still valid.
Obstacle 3) - Registering NOI into OINP.
-Although NOI is valid for 6 months, registering as quickly as possible is advised to secure a file number in OINP portal. However, it is a game of trade, once registered, must submit a complete application within 2 weeks. Without my ECA re-assessed I am not ready to risk the 1500 cad application fee yet.
Obstacle 4) - ECA result delivery delayed due to bad weather condition
-I don’t know if my re-assessment will lead me to something good. I paid 400 + courier fee for the rush service. It was assessed quickly, I guess it took only 1 day to assess my ECA. I am supposed to receive it 24 July 2017, but due to bad weather condition it was delivered 27 July 2017.
Obstacle 5) -  OINP HCP EE stream closed on 25 July 2017.
-It sound wasted as the program closed, I did not register my NOI under my account.
-BUT, good thing I registered a dummy account last 13 July 2017. Taking note of 2 weeks from registration and without knowing if OINP officer will allow me to utilize my dummy account, I started uploading documents into the dummy account. As the OINP office opened, I called them, discussed the ECA on the way, they agreed to utilize my dummy account and change my dummy account’s full name and birth date. Applicant has no way of modifying full name and birth date.
-Trusting God, I submitted my OINP application without the ECA, I was given a go signal to submit and attached LOE that ECA is on its way, to follow. Also, submitted document for change of personal details (from dummy name to real name). If my ECA result is bachelors degree, then I made a very good decision. If turns out not, then 1500 cad application fee will go down the drain.
-After submission, I called ICES and discuss my current situation. The officer agreed to divulge the equivalency over the phone. Which “supposedly” not allowed to do so. ECA result, it was “Bachelors Degree, 4 yrs”
Here is my OINP & CIC Timeline:
OINP
26 Jul 2017- Submitted
28 Jul 2017- Assessment
20 Aug 2017- Awaiting Information
24 Aug 2017- DIP - Decision in Progress
28 Aug 2017- Nominated/Approved
02 Sep 2017- Received OINP certificate
CIC
06 Sep 2017 - ITA received
25 Sep 2017- AOR
26 Oct 2017- Medical passed
We are still waiting for PPR, praying everyday for every stage of our application.
By the way, our obstacle course does not end in OINP stage, it also goes with CIC stage. As we did our medicals, I was diagnosed with hypertension. Aside from creatinine test, I was referred to cardiologist. Stress test and 2D echo results were not satisfactory. It denotes some cardio problems, CT scan was done. Result was also not impressive due to one artery with moderate stenosis. Ended up a need to do angiogram + FFR test. FFR test result was good enough to get cleared from cardiologist, and angioplasty was not necessary.
I am sharing my experiences, to give glory to God and to inspire those who struggle kick off their Canadian dream. I would say, chase for your dream, always pray for wisdom and guidance from Above and He will make a way!

Learn Exactly how I Cured My teacher In 2 Days.
10 Best Practices For teacher
Among the most crucial points that kids learn in college is the best ways to check out. Co-teaching is specified as two or even more educators functioning sympathetically to satisfy the needs of every pupil in the class. Veteran instructors that present sample lessons or time conserving suggestions could be a life saver for first year teachers. That's the reason that mentor should not just be treated as a basic occupation yet additionally a serious vocation where other individuals and service mores than self and also wage. As a result of this, most of teachers just try to mimic how their own teachers instructed. The educator will certainly after that assign a reading degree for every student this means the instructor could them match books and pupil based upon the reading degree.
What Alberto Savoia Can Show You Concerning educator.
Yes, objective is to help children attain, however they do not assist their instructors achieve success! An instructor coach program is not only valuable to the improvement of various other teachers, however it also assists more knowledgeable teachers in getting a fresh perspective and also continuing to be present. There are certain things throughout your yoga exercise teacher training program assists you to discover your own limitations and fears of coming to be an awesome educator. Nonetheless, most instructors are not maximizing their educator return to objective. The most vital misunderstanding in my book was that I was a probationary instructor for three years instead of the normal 2. As a high school student, I want that my institution and also individual teachers would just be honest and clear about their sensations and also policies concerning teacher/student get in touch with immediately. The instructors who are able to be mobile will certainly have the very best opportunity of finding teaching jobs. New York has an Alternate Educator Preparation Program targeted at career-changing and mid-career specialists. I really felt so honored that this girl, whom I have actually just kept up with by means of social media, desired me to cooperate her special day so many years after the fact. Over the last couple of months, there has actually been a great deal of debate about the recommended demand for English Teachers operating in independent schools frontistiria) to take exams in Greek language. It is my hope that the students will establish an admiration for art as well as its relevance in our every day lives.
instructor Made Simple - Also Your Kids Can Do It.
. With this gizmo educators could simply project photos, charts and even whole book pages onto a screen, where the whole course can see it. With a remote control and autofocus this is also a very useful gadget for instructors. Along with the info the site provides you on coming to be a certified teacher you will certainly likewise have a major checklist of points you need to satisfy prior to mentor because state this includes tests that teachers may have to take, coursework that includes whether you obtained you bachelors degree in mentor, as well as if you didn't you have to obtain an alternate instructors certification which will certainly still enable you to educate in these states. I also helped a number of colleges as a field supervisor for student instructors. The earlier trainees can start positive routines, the higher the chance that the educator will run a reliable class for the remainder of the year. Furthermore, all kind of people wished to talk with me - from all various other days it had to be that day - Murphy's Regulation was ending up being a thought, just a thought. With heavy emphasis on sustainable art and music programs, The Children's Art Town, collaborating with the Sevalaya, has placed a full-time music instructor at the orphanage to educate timeless Indian singing to over 1,500 kids at the Sevalaya Institution. I have not assumed of my teachers for time, many thanks for advising me of the wonderful times and caring educators that I had. Throughout trainee training, they work with a coach educator and also get experience training pupils in a class setting. Besides, the means of educator's actions is an eco slim instance for trainees, since as the saying goes, Teachers teach more by what they are than by what they say". Because of this, I need to play triage and also decide which subjects to show deeply, which topics to skim over to hit the peaks, and which subjects to transfer to the actual end of the program and hope I get there prior to Examination Day comes. Whether you're a brand-new teacher, or a teacher with just a few years of experience and even one with years of experience, I'm sure that you will certainly find these 5 parent educator communication methods very useful in developing a solid relationship with your trainees' parents. Ask to see your child's evaluation - which is another word for jobs, tests, and tests - as these are right an instructor establishes, what your kid knows. As the trainee proceeds to intermediate school, the duty of an instructor broadens to pass on info particular to a specific discipline. Pennsylvania does not have credit rating hr demands but does have subject requirements. It is the flute teacher task to instill the ideas of flute music and motivate students to enjoy in playing it. It has actually ended up being increasingly more typical to accomplish a master's degree before going on in advance in groove performance.

I hope I have been thorough with the various questions and if students still have further questions make sure to get in touch with me.
Realization of your dream is what we aim for.
13. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO APPLY FOR AN MBBBS PROGRAM?
Application fees may vary, as application processes differ from one agency to the other, however, to give you a gist through a standard application process. Step by step, we take you through a rational budget of how much you will need to apply for an MBBS program, using an approach of approximation and minimalism.
For starters, you’ll need to pay a sum of 2,300 RMB, an equivalent of 342 in dollars. That’s the fee that reaches the admission office upon submission of your health evaluation form, application form, scanned bio page of your passport and your transcripts or results. It also covers the deposit or security fee, this amount is returned to the student once the student reports to school and pays tuition fee in full, which is a measure put in place to minimize frauds who secure student visas for other purposes other than schooling. Finally, the applicant will need to pay for postage of all processed documents to be sent back to him or her. This is usually about a 100$. From the above analysis, a grand total of 442$ will be used in application.
14. CAN I DO THE INTERNSHIP OUTSIDECHINA? IN THIS CASE, DO I NEED TO PAY FEES TO THE UNIVERSITY INCHINA?
Of course! You can, as long as it is done at WHO-recognized hospitals under the supervision of qualified medical professionals. When you take a look at the fee structure below, you realize that the fee structure of the final year, which is the year students are supposed to be on internship, is greatly subsidized from 16,000RMB to just 4,300RMB, an equivalent of 639$. This fee does not actually go into tuition but rather into medical insurance, graduation and residence permit, all of which the student would need once he or she returns from internship.
15. HOW IS MBBS IN CHINA?
In terms of academics, the pressure is the same as you would experience at any other medical school elsewhere in the world, even maybe a little as learning overseas would require another level of responsibility, maturity and time management. There is also a healthy competition among students to push them to bring out the best of their abilities. Students also achieve a higher level of socialization and cultural exposure as they interact with classmates of different nationalities and backgrounds, and fun equally balances with academics, to give students a balanced mentality. A few problems may arise from geographical changes especially for students from tropical parts of the world such as Africa who might find certain seasons a little bit harsh to them, and even find it hard to go outdoors during those times. Such problems are not even long-term ones, as students learn to eventually adapt to these situations and further convert them to one of their individual strengths.
16. APPLICATION FOR MBBS IN CHINA UNIVERSITIES WITHOUT COMMON ENTRANCE TEST
Universities in India require a common entrance test to be passed before enrollment into medical schools. However, this not the case with China-based universities, which require a result of your High School Exam certificate or its equivalent in qualifications. There is no instance of having to write or pass a common entrance test.

Finding my niche is HARD
This is/was the ABOUT section for my homepage. But as you may have noticed, it's more like an autobiography.
Below I explain alittle about what has brought me thus far, on life's at times rather challenging journey. It's personal and who knows if I'll regret it. But it's true.....so here it is:
Deciding on a niche or focus for a blog is really hard!
I have many different interests, and as time goes by, many different titles to my name also. But because my wanderlust and perhaps more accurately my ever growing eleutheromania (intense desire for freedom) just keeps growing, I have decided to settle on a few foci instead.
Hiking and travelling is one, health and health benefits of walking is another. Design - particularly clothing and gear are still others!
I often find that truly experiencing a place is best done on foot. But besides this, hiking is a great form of excercise, it's free (at least the walking part) and completely eco-friendly!
I hope you enjoy the information and hikes that I present on this homepage. They are planned, tried and tested by yours truly. (Unless otherwise stated).
Here's an introduction to the person behind the blog....
What´s so special about you, you say? Well, probably nothing. Actually, definitely nothing. Except the same old BS about us all being special and unique and important. I know that I´m special to my family. I´m very lucky in that regard. I have wonderful parents, a younger brother who is my close friend (only after we both graduated from youth!) and friends and relatives that support me.
So I guess I´m just like a lot of other people. Trying to make sense of my life, discover my path and trying to go through this experience, being as kind and as curious on the way as possible. But that's a pretty new philosophy to me. Not the "being kind" part of course, but definitely the "curious approach" part is now a priority. And even more recently the knowledge that I can live and work a Location Independent lifestyle through digital work. Ohh what wondrous times!
I´m in my thirties now. I had other plans when I graduated from high school. Didn't we all? I thought I would follow a certain path. Be married in my late twenties, have kids by the time I was 30. Have shed the weight that has superglued itself to my ass since my teens. And definitely, absolutely definitely, be in a high powered job, earning lots and lots of money!
Ha!  Not quite.
Well, I mean, I was always on the nerdy side. Good grades. Valedictorian. Accepted into the only university and the only course I applied to. Why have back-ups right? It´s what I wanted, and I knew how to get there. So, I studied. And studied. And studied. For 8 years at university I had a constant shadow of huge textbooks and never-ending exams. I didn't go on holiday without my books, for 7 of those 8 years. And my body and mind was so stressed out from the chronic bad conscience about not studying enough, that I kept gaining weight and at one particular low point, had signs of depression. But I was following the plan, right? This was going to pay off!! I was putting in the time, ready to reap the benefits in my late twenties. WRONG.
About halfway through my degree, I started having serious doubts about my choices. I found it harder and harder to focus and pass the exams. I sat in the library day after day, looking out at the world. All the beautiful girls and gorgeous boys, biking past the window, living, breathing, enjoying life. I was stuck. And I stayed stuck. I dragged my ass through the bachelor. But who needs half an education? (Delusional and arrogant much?) So, I convinced myself to keep going. One semester after another, some with 3 attempts at the same course. I was miserable. But I was so lucky though right? An amazing education, a life in one of the most wonderful cities on earth, a boyfriend (from when I was 25 to 31). Life was going according to schedule. This is what I wanted damn it!!!
But I felt so lost. So alone. So completely tricked by my own better-than-though, know-it-all 19-year-old-self. The girl that had it all figured out. Laid the plan. Ticked the boxes. The girl that peaked in highschool?
Long story short. I graduated. I have my certificate. A masters degree. A clear path with financial security, laid out at my feet. So once again, I sucked it up. Surely, it gets better? If only I could just fall in love with my profession. In fact it should become my overnight vocation! I will live it and breathe it. I will become a world renowned researcher, I will publish articles in huge recognised publications and give keynote talks around the globe. WRONG.
I worked, day in and day out. I got up before the sun, and came home after it had set again. Okay, not hard to achieve for 6 months of the year in northern Europe, but still. I tried my damnedest to fit in. To find the spark of inspiration. To fall in love with my job. And it just wasn't there. Most of the time, I cried in the shower before work, I had constant stomach aches and I became less than hospitable at home with my live-in boyfriend, who gradually extricated himself from the train wreck that was my existence. No wonder.
When everything fell apart in the winter of 2013, I had to make a decision. I couldn't go on like this. It wasn't healthy, and frankly I got sick and tired of hearing myself complain, every time someone asked me about my wonderful job.
So I jumped. I took the proverbial leap of faith. (FYI: I´m an atheist, but this is still no small feat!). I let my contract run it´s course, without securing new employment. I sought professional help from a careers coach (Yay! by the way for coaches, therapists and good listeners across the globe! - But more on that some other time!!). I decided to start living my dreams. No, not because I won the lottery... which I´m still waiting for, by the way. But because it was time. Time to find that girl that had been extinguished under the weight of those textbooks and broken hearts.
So, I went to New York City. Yes, I rented an apartment, and went to NYC for 3 glorious months, to live out a life long dream of living in that truly spectacular city. It was amazing! Everything I had hoped for. The breath of "fresh" air that I so needed. It was a release. A liberation. I could get up when I wanted to. Go running by the Hudson. Walk from the UES to my apartment in SOHO, and eat world cuisine to my hearts content. But, it also taught me this: Don´t move to a new place, without having a job, a few friends or a school to attend. At least not if you're an introvert like me :)
You won´t meet people as easily as you think - and the New Yorker's are pragmatic to the N´th degree. "Ohh you´re only here for 3 months you say? Well, in that case, call me if you´re still here after 4!!" The huge turnover in people moving to and from the city has made many hesitant about forming new friendships. And understandably so.
Anyway. I could talk for hours about the NYC experience. But perhaps that will come at a later time.
So, while in New York, I made yet another life altering decision. To understand this pretty impulsive and rather odd decision, you should know that I grew up in several different European countries. I am a restless soul. The philosophical pondering that can be made on this subject alone, is material for another post or 10. But suffice it to say, that I decided to move. Out of the country. To the other end of Europe. More specifically the southern coast of Spain. Better known as the Costa del Sol (The Sunshine Coast). There are many particular reasons for my choice, which I won´t get into here, but let me say that I have not regretted it for more than an hour at a time, here and there :)
It was been exactly the space and calm, and mental peace that was missing. I began my healing (not the crystal rocks and pendant swinging kind), but the broken heart and the disillusioned spirit kind.
I am healthier than ever. I have finally discovered a form of exercise that I truly enjoy - and that I can keep doing without getting bored. I have begun HIKING! Yes, in that wondrous heaven of Scandinavian pensioners filling the more than 100 golf courses along the coast, so gaily referred to now as "The Costa del Golf", by some ingenious marketing team. Despite the obvious influx of tourists during the summer season, and the noticeable "mañana" mentality so readily displayed by the locals and many expats too, I found a place. For a while at least.
Why on earth...? Well, because its beautiful! Breath taking in fact. Free (in the liberated people kind, not the monetary sense). And the food is amazing!
I no longer work within the field that I am so extensively schooled. I doubt I ever will again, at least not in the capacity of my previous jobs. But who knows? Life goes on. And I have finally started to chip away at the petrified shell that encased me for so many years.
I am more spiritual. I get up early, of my own accord, and bring my morning latte on to the beach when I'm in spain, and to the nearest window when I'm in colder climes. I hike through the mountains and valleys. I run along the boardwalk, and cuddle with my dog. (An addition to my life that I had hungered for for years!). But am I rich? - definitely not! But am I rich? Definitely YES!!
So in conclusion to this rather overwhelming introduction, I can only say: I hope you will read more of my journey in the time to come. But even if no-one reads these words, it is yet another of my self indulgent schemes to bring me not only back to the girl I once was, but far far beyond it!
Please Enjoy :)

Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose
There was a rock. It was as big as the fist of a giant (which is a very precise unit of measurement, for giants are creatures of well-defined dimensions). It wasn’t a particularly nice piece of rock: it was a rock that would not have drawn any attention from any self-respecting rock scientist - rocktologist, in rock-speak. Its dull matte brown outer layer was its most glaringly - or not-so-glaringly - prominent feature, prompting unsuspecting observers to overlook the fact that the rock does not resemble anything pleasant in shape. In fact it was very out of shape: the rock hadn’t moved in years. Its rugged exterior may have attracted the most thrill-seeking of the lady rocks, but its bland personality -
And suddenly there was a crack in the rock. No bigger than a giant’s finger nail (or a different, smaller giant’s pinky finger), the crack produced the tiniest of specks. The speck tumbled from the edge of the crack all the way down to the foot of the rock, bounced a wholesome three times, and landed perfectly still. With that, the rock silently slunk away to exactly where it was, back to its silent and mysterious and ugly - and as far as ugly goes, was it mentioned that this rock was at the bottom of that barrel? - ways, never to enter anyone’s thoughts again.
The speck gave a silent cough and grew. It knew it was not a rock, and that its name was Gandalf. It knew those things just as it knew that the earth was flat, that sunrises were a beautiful and romantic occasion, and that Apple products were ridiculously overpriced. It also knew that it was supposedly a dwarf. Gandalf the dwarf sat silently in the sun and grew and basked and grew. There was not much worth telling for this part. Dwarves, apparently, have very uninteresting pastimes: sitting (end of list). Time came and went, briefly enveloping him in her loving embrace. So entranced was he in Time, and Time in him, that neither noticed how much of her had passed. When Time finally left for she “had a meeting”, Gandalf turned to look at his sundial, and found that sixty million years had gone by. Good, he thought, I’m not big on one night stands.
The next morning saw Logic riding up the hill on his high horse. After learning that Gandalf had basked in the sun for sixty million years, Logic drew a long breathe and said in its shrill know-it-all tone, “you should be all shriveled up!”
And indeed he was. Gandalf looked down at his ancient arms and legs, “you’re right.” And he thought to himself, I should take a shower to hydrate. So it rained, and Gandalf re-hydrated himself.
“Actually,” continued Logic in its never-ending quest to let no mistake - no matter how big or small - slide, in an attempt to mask his own insecurity, “you should be dead.”
“Oh.” And so he was. Gandalf was dead.
Thoughts came to be after what felt like an eternity. Gandalf looked around himself and saw only himself. To his mounting annoyance, he learned that he was no longer a dwarf. In fact, he was reincarnated as the color magenta. He knew this just as he knew that the earth was flat, that sunrises were a beautiful and romantic occasion, and that Apple products were ridiculously overpriced.
Colors - or more formally, color-mixology - was a subject that many a scientists thought to be a waste of their time. In fact, the only person to have ever seriously studied color-mixology was branded as a raving lunatic by his peers, and relegated to run for the president.
Color-mixology was the very essence of life on earth. The first axiom of color-mixology is that the more a color is a mix of other colors, the closer it is to the Creator. The second axiom of color-mixology is that color-mixology don’t need no second axioms.
Magenta, being a color whose name only ever came up to make the speaker sound smart, was indeed very close to the Creator. In fact, he was speaking to the Creator that very moment.
“What’s there to do as a color?” Gandalf inquired.
NOTHING.
“Oh.” Gandalf then thought for a long time, but time didn’t exist for colors. In fact, one could say that Gandalf was a very fast thinker - he might have beaten AlphaGo, had he known how to play Go. “I don’t think I want to be a color anymore.”
OKAY.
“Well,” paused Gandalf, “how do I go about not being a color anymore?”
WELL.
There was a pause.
YOU JUST THINK REAL HARD ABOUT NOT BEING A COLOR.
The Creator’s voice seems to have softened, taking on an encouraging tone. So Gandalf thought real hard about not being a color. And then he wasn’t.
His was the first documented case of a color committing suicide.
Gandalf opened his eyes to his roommate Gleb engaged in his daily cougar hunt.
“Morning.”
“I got no time for your shit, Gandalf.” Gleb was swinging his T-shirt at a moth close to the exposed light bulb on the ceiling, whilst running on his treadmill.
“Why the treadmill?”
“For elevation.”
“Oh.”
After his brief stint as a color, Gandalf was reincarnated as a middle-aged dwarf. The economy was declining at that point and the weather wasn’t great, either. He tried walking south to warmer climates, but the road was blocked by a wall for some inexplicable reason.
Gandalf was forced to turn back and apply for jobs in the ever-declining job market. His resume read “Gandalf the Dwarf” in the bright color of magenta. A homophobic manager at an abortion clinic took pity in him and gave him an interview.
“Well,” said the homophobe apologetically, “you’ll need a bachelor’s degree at least.”
“Oh,” Gandalf thought about it, “but I’ll just be filling out forms.”
“Well,” the homophobe was really uncomfortable at this point, “rules is rules.”
So now Gandalf was enrolled in the Recreation and Leisure program in the Community College of Dumbledore. His roommate was Gleb.
“I think I’m going to fail my exams today.”
“I’m listening to ABBA.” Ever the Gleb.
After flunking his first year and being kicked out of school, Gandalf decided to invest the forty dollars he stole from his one-time roommate Gleb.
“You should invest in Apple,” said the banker across from whom Gandalf sat, “you can flip that forty in no time.” He thought Gandalf meant forty thousand.
“Okay.” Gandalf was relieved. Before coming to the bank, he wasn’t even sure if he could last the day on that money.
He left the bank and went to the local farmer’s market. There he met a most seasoned salesperson.
“Would you like a taste?” She offered up a half-full Tupperware of diced-up apples.
“No, that’s alright.”
“Oh I insist.” She was persistent.
“Well it would be such a hassle. I mean - it’s just apples.”
She stared at him with a blank expression, surrounded by baskets upon baskets upon baskets of apples. “Oh.”
“I think I’ll buy one of each.” Gandalf was a master of hedging his investments.
Gandalf heard knocking at the door of his little farm house.
He now owned a farm off the highway. By some miracle of life, the apple cores that he had thrown away grew into a forest of apple trees.
Gandalf opened the door and saw a lady clad in a black and ill-fitting dress.
“I’m the Wicked Witch of the North!” She announced.
“Oh.”
“Invited me in or I’ll turn you into a toad!” Her threat was met with a blank expression.
“It’s a small animal that lives in a pond,” she explained, stepping into his farm house.
Seeing his expression - still blank, the witch reassured him, “I won’t turn you into a toad. You don’t have to be scared.”
“I wasn’t.”
“Oh.”
The witch wanted tea, so Gandalf took out his tea set and grabbed some thin leaves near a tree in his back yard. The witch started explaining the reasons for her visit.
She was having big trouble with the entire elven race. “I’m in a minor kerfuffle with some elves.”
They were deeply engaged in a land war in Asia. “Their kind have set foot in my forest.”
She was low on funds and could not pay her soldiers. “I do not wish to expend too many resources on this... kerfuffle.”
So she learned from a blind psychic fortune-teller that the elves had some secret treasure that fueled their well-being. “I want you to help me find out more about the elves, and learn what it would take for them to wish to negotiate peace.”
“Why me?” Interrupted Gandalf.
The psychic had said that Gandalf’s skull was so thick that it could not be penetrated by elven magic. “I was told that you were a man of insurmountable courage and tremendous wit.”
“People do say that about me.”
The witch thought she was being mocked and promptly turned Gandalf into a toad. He took a swim in his tea cup and decided that tea wasn’t for him. In fact he wasn’t mocking the witch - people do say that about him, but only to his face.
The witch then went to Gandalf’s computer and looked up the necessary skills for spying, which apparently included deception and sleight of hand and whatnot. She then downloaded those skills into her magical repository and installed them in Gandalf’s brain. Then - in case her magic had gone wrong and Gandalf never turned back into a dwarf - she dutifully cleared his browser history, erasing thousands of pages with the word “midget” in the title.
An hour later Gandalf burst out of his tea cup and landed - with insurmountable courage and tremendous wit, one might add - on his bum. He was left with a fuzzy memory of a crazy lady in black overalls, a vague feeling that he should spy on the elves, and urine that forever smelled like tree leaves.
