As @cliozaur has pointed out, Javert is almost supernaturally good at his job, seeming invincible in front of pistol fire and Mme Thénardier’s stone. His mere presence is so terrifying that only the Thénardiers dare to resist, with the men from Patron Minette immediately surrendering. He’s also able to identify these criminals with their masks on, highlighting how knowledgeable he is (and giving him a chance to show off; he loves drama). He’s compared to a “sovereign,” and it’s an apt comparison – he dominates the scene from the moment he steps in to the moment he leaves.
Of course, in a book where one of the earliest characters is the Conventionist, comparisons to a sovereign are suspect. And with a character as awful as Javert, that’s doubly true. He is great at his job, and it’s even fun(? sort of) to watch him do it here because of his supernatural abilities. But his job itself is the problem. Before he even reaches the rooms of the Gorbeau House, he’s arrested Azelma – the most innocent one there (hence the chapter title; she’s certainly a victim). And once he’s in the room, he continues to make arrests as quickly as possible, and insensitively, too. The established members of Patron Minette give in easily, with at most a negotiation for tobacco while imprisoned. That Javert accepts so easily suggests that this a routine; justice or even proportionate punishment isn’t most important to him, nor is stopping crime: making arrests is. It’s a punitive system for sure, but it’s not actually harshest on Patron Minette, who may just cycle through it at this point (to be fair, a lot of them may have already been broken down by this system – Boulatruelle is there, and that’s likely because he couldn’t find work as an ex-convict. And his alcoholism is likely a way of coping, too. They’re not all unsympathetic, and many may have had similar experiences. They’re just used to this now, and they seem very familiar with the police in the same way they’re familiar with them). Javert, then, is a “sovereign” in a tyrannical sense. He controls all as soon as he appears and enforces his authority brutally.
Those who are most hurt by this imprisonment and who are harshly punished are the Thénardiers. Again, they’re all a bit more sympathetic than Patron Minette (with the possible exception of Boulatruelle) because we know how they live. But in the case of Azelma and Mme Thénardier, they’re genuinely more “innocent” here (again, with the possible exception of Boulatruelle, who was drunk and asleep). They may have less (or no) experience with prison, too, as suggested by Mme Thénardier’s panic for her daughters as she’s arrested. It almost recalls Jean Valjean reaching to pat the heads of his sister’s children and weeping while chained, or Fantine fearing for Cosette when she first encounters Javert. The ones who are most harshly punished, then, aren’t the most dangerous criminals: they’re the most vulnerable ones, the “victims.” To Patron Minette, the cycle of arrests seems casual. They fear Javert, but prison isn’t so horrific to them that they resist him, either. To the Thénardiers, who have a family, it could destroy their lives.
And again, prison is scariest (and most threatening) to the most “moral” here. Azelma is a child and we don’t see her reaction, but she’s definitely suffering. Mme Thénardier, who at least has the redeeming quality of loving and caring for her daughters, is the only one in the room who fully breaks down upon arrest. Love is largely held up as a major force for resistance and change in the novel, but here (as with Valjean and Fantine), it’s also a vulnerability. Those who have love can improve society (or at least lives in their immediate vicinity), but the prison system will try to break that down, making them into isolated individuals who can’t coordinate with others (like Patron Minette or, to an extent, Javert, who’s sometimes slow to call on reinforcements because he’s most concerned with showing off his own skill to get credit for arrests; this is what happened with the first Gorbeau incident; he didn’t tell anyone the man was Valjean and started out with only two other men) or who are too frightened to try to connect again (Jean Valjean, with the exception of Cosette).
Speaking of victims, Javert’s priority being arrests is also illustrated by his lack of concern for the literal victim – M Leblanc/Jean Valjean – until he’s arrested everyone else present. Safety is not a concern for him, whether it’s his own (risking being shot or stoned; he looks powerful because he isn’t hit, but it shows a disregard for his own life) or anyone else’s. He even begins to write his report before looking for him! And when he sees that he’s fled, his only thought is that he must have been an even better arrest, not anything relating to his well-being. Once again, Javert being effective is the same as Javert being cruel. He disregards the person he was called to protect (because that was Marius’ intention! Even if that’s not Javert’s job) and hurts the most vulnerable people present more than any threatening criminal. Even helping a (supposed) bourgeois isn’t as important to him as displaying his authority through arrests and punishing the less fortunate.

✼ Erelas ✼
Chapter 1 - Forlong
Read on AO3
Tumblr media
SUMMARY : About halfway between the capitals of Gondor and Rohan, Birandor and Yvion keep the beacon at Erelas ever-ready for a great war. But how does life go for this pair of Gondorian beacon guards, living amid the high wind and the mountain-snow? Isolated though they are, a friend or foe might appear at any moment!
CHARACTERS : numerous OC's: Birandor & Yvion, two Gondorean Beacon-guards; Tingli son of Dingli, a nomadic dwarf; Forlong, the beacon guards' road quartermaster; others will be added as time goes on. There are also references to and appearances by some canon characters including Gandalf, Legolas, Ecthelion, Sauron, the Eagles, and a Dol Amrothean prince named Angelimir.
CONTENT : humor, parody, slice of life
RATING : Teen┃WORD COUNT : 4.2k┃CHAPTERS : 1/10?
A/N : Posted on behalf of my husband, Mr. Nisile, with his permission. He says: “I lost a dare, so I had to write my first fic ever! Bring your smiles and read a while. Hot cocoa and cookies will be provided by the invisible friend. This is a work in progress, and updates will happen but I’m a bit of a slowpoke. There are more notes on AO3.” Feel free to leave any feedback - I will pass it all on to Mr. Nisile!
TAGS : @konartiste @hippodameia I also know a number of other people were interested in this work and even helped me get to the requisite number of posts to persuade Mr. Nisile to write it, but I forgot who you were. Let me know if you want to be added to the tag list.
PREVIEW:
The old man was like a species in and of himself. And as a species, Forlong seemed entirely homeless—itinerating from mountainy fireplace to mountainy fireplace, growing his beard long, and smelling violently of pony-piss and tobacco. The sort of character to trundle about the world, ever on the brink of death, but outlive us all. Ever on and on. As the indolent hoof-sounds grew quieter, Birandor watched for a long minute as the cone-shaped hat vanished down the mountain path toward Min-Rimmon. When the tip of the hat had fully disappeared, habit kicked in and Birandor’s eyes swiveled left, then right, going first to the beacon of Nardol, then to the beacon of Min-Rimmon. The beacons weren’t lit. Birandor looked at the small heap of supplies. He hadn’t checked that its contents matched with the list they’d handed Forlong two weeks prior, but there wasn’t a need. Regardless of how ageworn, pungent or bizarre Forlong may be as a road quartermaster, he had a mania for details both small and large; the supplies would never fall short; all materials they requested one visit would be delivered with tyrannous precision upon the next.

guide to the protests
Tumblr media
[1] History is ever-changing, it follows the tide of human determination - not a set process, but a creation of human effort. Just like the Hong Kong’s extradition laws, Tunisia’s fruit vendor, Taiwan’s tobacco seller, injustice inspired by systematic violence sets ablaze human’s thirst for freedom, the Urumqi Fire in China follows the same path. Resistance may not succeed, but it highlights the flame of humanity; the flame’s light might be ambushed, but the burning ashes remain. My strength might be weak, but I will never surrender.
Tumblr media
[2] Numerous scenes of resistance; professors shielding their students from riot police, students raising sheets of white under phone flashlights, 重慶哥’s desperate screams, they remind me of 2019’s Hong Kong. My friends within the walls of China, you might have believed that Hong Kong’s protests were of the works of ‘foreign forces’ and ‘deviant rioters’, but I hope by now, you have understood, for the caged bird sings of freedom.
Tumblr media
[3] I receive letters of shame from Mainlanders these days, and I just want to tell you: ‘Its alright.’ Our existence on Earth, bounded by the unfathomable plethora of locks and restraints. The past you was under the restraints of your government, now that your eyes have been open, never close them again. Allow me to state again: No ‘foreign forces’ could put waves and waves of people on the streets. They are there facing the risk of years in prison, even the risk of disappearing without cause. The people of Hong Kong understand, and now so do the people of China.
Tumblr media
[4] The government will try; they will try to deny your voices, to tell you your demands threaten the country’s stability; they will try to defame your leaders, to tell you they have been bribed; they will try to use ‘divide and conquer’ as their tactic, to tell you trust between the people have been damaged; they will try everything, using nationalism to eradicate the diversity with us, to sever links between every protest. Then you must stand strong in you believe. Always remember why you chose to stand up, conquer your darkest hours of doubt with courage.
Tumblr media
[5] Standing on the streets, it was the first time I saw the sacrifices made for belief. Although precipitous, hopeful and innocent. The superficial responsibility I once bore, like heavy padlocks weighting me down, were discarded as I discovered the desire of freedom from the bottom of my heart. You will face many difficulties; the people beside you will not understand, the government’s scorching tongue will bombard you, the one laying next to you in bed may point their accusing finger at you. We’ve all been through it, please, persevere.
Tumblr media
[6] Division between the people is most disheartening of all, but it is also what the CCP is best at. I ask you to hold your hatred at a distance, your resistance, your struggle, your perseverance, is to one day liberate them too, them standing on the other side. Hold your hatred for the rotten system close to you, hold the hatred you have for the dictator who harms the people in favour of power, hold the hatred you have for the root of injustice, not the victims of the hands of evil. Hold your inner peace, for you shall see clearer and further.
Tumblr media
[7] ‘Liberty, or Death.’ The core of freedom is diversity, separation of powers. As a Hong Konger, I have only one piece of advice, when questioning the authority of tyrannical powers, question their rhetoric of suppression as well: question the camps holding millions of Uyghurs to ‘root out terrorism’, question the forced social-cohesion to ‘unite hong kong’. Most importantly, stand in the shoes of others fighting alongside you against the common enemy.
Tumblr media
[8] I dedicate the cries of 2019 to you at this time.

tw : death and abuse
grew up in an abusive household . his dad held him to an extremely high standard that he could never reach . it only got worse after his mom died in a car wreck that his dad blames kian for . kian and his brother , ledger , were in the back seat arguing when they were still kids and their mom was trying to get them to stop , turned to get them to stop and accidentally turned the wheel as well , causing them to crash into the side of the interstate . kian was super close with her so it really fucking got to his when his dad would blame him .
he plays hockey and has been playing since he was extremely young . it’s the only thing his dad really cared about with him . so if kian played well , it meant less verbal / mental abuse at home . but one bad game , he was back to being a piece of shit son with no future .
the only light in his life had been his high school sweetheart . they were together all through high school and got married when they were 20 . kian also began playing in the nhl that year .
still , his dad was in his ear getting to him . his dad had begun dating this woman who was with him for the money . oh , his dad is a weathly man . owns a technology company and has made quite a name for himself . his new stepmom had no interest in being nice to kian or his brother . and after dealing with this for long enough , kian decided to make sure the ‘ family dinner ‘ they were having was going to be the last . after finding out that his stepmom was now in the will , he told his dad how stupid he was , which snowballed into a fight that ended with his dad being in a coma for months , between ledger and kian both throwing punches until realizing if they didn’t stop , it would be the end of their respective careers . ever since then , he hasn’t spoken to his dad . . or his wife ( not his dad’s wife . . kian’s wife ) .
his wife was still in college in virginia and kian was in new york during most of the year because of hockey . they would see each other often . . until kian went MIA for nearly two years .
it wasn’t like their relationship was sunshine and rainbows though . they had been growing apart since their marriage . neither one of them were the same person they were back in high school . kian wasn’t the all american jock he had been when he was younger , still hiding all of the pain behind a smile . and she wasn’t as perfect as he had thought she had been . her controlling nature was beginning to butt heads with his independence , while his anger and patience was becoming less and less controlled . the fights were nearly every day and by the time he decided to go missing for a few months , they had already been separated for a week before . and it stayed that way for nearly two years ( ages 21 - 23 ) .
now . . well they aren’t back together because of love . but because kian is a little pussy bitch and if he doesn’t feel like he has control over everything in his life , he will be losing his shit again <3 and because she has a way of making herself seem as tho she is that one thing keeping him from going off the rails again and not the thing pushing him over it . he’s there because it’s all he knows and if one thing strays from the way he planned his life out when he was in high school , he will have a mental break .
anyways . he just need to see a therapist , not stay married to a girl he doesn’t love anymore . moral of the story . so he’s married legally , but the divorce papers are in his dresser because he’s trying to get up the nerve to tell his wife he doesn’t love her and he knows she doesn’t love him .
personality wise , he’s absolutely the worst person . manipulative af . gaslight no girlboss . he has no problem being horrible to someone , but also will attempt to play everyone like a puppet if it does something for him . knows no love . doesn’t know how to properly handle his emotions . thank being said . . those few people that he is close with , he is the most loyal man in the world . even while he was MIA from his wife , drinking and shit every night , losing his goddamn mind , he still never cheated on her . and he would go to the end of the world for those he really cares about . that’s probably the only way to know that he actually cares about someone . . seeing how he acts , not what he says .
anyways , this is such a rough intro . . i’m working on my notes app apology now for this abomination .

The Fall of Napoleon
synopsis
What would have happened if, before Napoleon sent his dogs to attack the hard-working horse, Boxer, everything had ended up being discovered? The news would have spread between the working animals. This event would have generated another social revolt among the population, already burdened by Napoleon's oppressive regime.
The animals would have risen against their leader, marking a crucial turning point in the animals' fight for freedom. A familiar face would have returned, with a new perspective gained during his time out, and his return would have promised to bring a new change to Animal Farm.
Antonia Piva e Andre Natel

fanfic
The Fall of Napoleon
The animals united in their rebellion against humans, however now they came across a new conflict when Napoleon, the pig who has taken control of Animal Farm, put together a plan to secure his power. It all began when rumors reached the ears of Snowball, the exiled pig who had once shared leadership with Napoleon. Living in the shadows beyond the farm, Snowball learned of Napoleon's plot to eliminate any potential threats to his rule.
Napoleon ordered his nine dogs to attack Boxer, his trusted partner. The loyal canine companions, once defenders of Animal Farm, were now being used to silence the revolution.
At dawn, the animals gathered at a meeting point for an important discussion about the early events on the farm. The atmosphere was heavy with expectation as whispers circulated among the lines. Suspicion and fear overtook the animals' hearts when they realized Snowball emerged from the shadows, revealing the shocking truth. He recounted the details of Napoleon's betrayal, exposing the horrible act of sending the dogs to attack Boxer.
Gasps of disbelief ran through the crowd as the animals faced the harsh reality that their leader had become a traitor. Heartbroken, the animals supported Snowball, who was determined to end Napoleon's oppressive regime. The Animals have to face the difficult task of freeing Animal Farm from a leader who has lost sight of the principles.
The animals organized a revolution. In the following morning, apart from doing their usual duties, they came up with a plan. The strategy was straightforward: forcibly expel Napoleon, invade his house, and force him to leave the farm. Simultaneously, the dogs would be confined, a quick and uncomplicated process that prevented Napoleon from reacting in any way. Any resistance on his part would have consequences, potentially leading to his death.
The execution of the plan went well, leading to Napoleon's fall from power and guiding a new era under Snowball's rule. It puts an end to the old practices. Under Snowball's regime, all the animals should be free, happy, and equal. The most important principles were that: No animal must ever live in a house, sleep in a bed, wear clothes, drink alcohol, smoke tobacco, touch money, or engage in trade because these habits are evil, remind them of humans, and above all, no animal must ever tyrannize over his own kind; animals are all brothers, animals are all equal, no animal must ever kill any other animal.
The expulsion of Napoleon resulted in an egalitarian farm, with improved living conditions. The animals united to construct a new windmill, to enjoy his power to reduce the extensive work. Snowball creates an environment that fosters equality, making sure the pigs no longer manipulate the population for their own gain. A collective effort was made to distribute the workload evenly, creating a society where all members contributed equitably. Consequently, all this generates growth in the Farm. The construction and utilization of the windmill symbolized progress, reflecting the harmony among the animals.

Comic Design Brief
I’ve asked my dad if he can help illustrate the graphic novel of Vigolia so we can use it as a prop and these were some references I put together as a part of the brief I gave him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Robbie:
Nam Nori is a time travelling messenger for the occult. He is a raven, delivering messages between secret societies that attempt to remain present throughout time. His moral compass is slightly obscure, he knows what he’s doing is wrong, but he owes a debt.
Being from the future, Nori’s generation, particularly the working class, were drafted by their tyrannical government to travel to distant off world colonies to mine for resources. The rich could avoid the harsh labour by studying distant worlds and spearheading scientific investigations that paved the way for new knowledge. Their studies were often carried out in an attempt to analyse a planet’s resources. Nam Nori managed to avoid becoming another cog in the machine after stumbling upon a drunk man passed out in an alleyway outside the neon lit bar, Cerberus, in New Tokyo. It was a case of identity theft. The drunkard had strapped to his wrist a suitcase which Nori believed there to be money inside. He had to dislocate the man’s thumb in order to pry the suitcase off his wrist. Nori searched him, finding a wallet with no contents except some old currency – of no value in his time. A lighter with a symbol and tobacco, a luxury where Nori is from. The stranger carried nothing else... except in his hand, a bottle labelled ‘Love Juice’...
“Hitchhiking through time is a ritual for Nori. His cassette player. A device that loops one of several hot funk remixes' of a vapourwave lost in time. The instrument of no label, his conduit of temporal navigation. And so a long drag of Shetland Spirit. A swig from his twist off cap bottle of love juice... Nam Nori departs...”
Rosie:
Ok so I’m going to decipher that and explain what it all means!
I like this bit about the drunken man in the alleyway, finding the suitcase, searching it for money, prying the suitcase away from him, finding the wallet, the lighter. I want to focus to be upon the fact he’s searching for money - he’s doing something immoral but he kind of has to, he’s just trying to get by in this world. He’s kind of an antihero.
Diegetically the graphic novel of Vigolia was created in the 80s to feel as through it was 60s so it has lots of 60s influences and older. Basically it was trying to feel retro even for its time, it’s a pastiche of the 60s retrofuture aesthetic. Now in the present (diegetically we’re talking roughly 2000s) it feels older still because it was created in the 80s - there’s this extra layer of ‘vintage’.

Osiandos
One of the demonic deities who serves the High King Lucifer as one of his most trusted. This information was shared to me by Osiandos and are also my own experiences through working with this magnificent infernal god.
Rulerships: orating, rhetoric, philosophy, humanism, social sciences
History: Osiandos is one of the most trusted demons of Lucifer but is not one of the royalties of Hell (Goetia). He is, however, a Teacher and the Protector of the Path of Humanism. In the ancient times, Osiandos was a deity who wandered the Earth teaching people about how to empower themselves, overcome adversity, find happiness, and many other things. He taught these lessons from his heart and showed great understanding and compassion towards all. Often times, Osiandos would manifest on Earth, pretending to be a human, and would orate to crowds in order to inspire them. He also had debates with many philosophers, but they were always unable to best him.
When the day came that the False God, Jehovah, took hold of the Earth, he sought to bring all humans into his grasp. This tyrannical god’s goal was to manipulate all humanity into following only him and fill people with guilt and suffering. One of the many gods who Jehovah needed to get out of his way was Osiandos, due to his resistance towards this plan of cruelty. The tyrant god cast Osiandos into Hell where he would become a demon with the other deities who had rebelled against him. In Hell, Osiandos became recruited into Lucifer’s kingdom and helps in teaching wisdom. He is also one of the extremely few demons who refuses to torture corrupt humans since he hates harming people.
Elements: fire and earth
Colours: brown, orange, dark yellow
Appearance: Osiandos loves humans so much that he appears as one of us. He takes the form of a man in his 60’s and wears a beige-brown medieval robe with orange and dark yellow designs.
Personality: Osiandos is by far the most human-loving of all the demons. He is very humble, generous, reasonable, passionate, charismatic, and friendly. As an orator, he always speaks about the needs of humanity and how we must rise up and take back our freedom and joy. He is so passionate in his way of speaking, that he puts all the zealot preachers to shame. He is also very poetic in the way that he speaks, and can win against practically anyone in an argument due to his ability to reason and emotionally move people. Osiandos is a true fighter for love, truth, freedom, beauty, harmony, and all other things that are good. He has also stated that he is very optimistic and looks upon our world as a place of opportunity, no matter how bad things get. All we have to do is believe in who we are, in our future selves, and courageously fight to achieve what we set out for.
Because Osiandos loves advising people to become their best selves so much, he very often gives out advice enthusiastically. He has stated that humanity has felt so alone and lost because our oppressors (governments and Abrahamic religious leaders) have long tried to destroy what has held us together: our ancestral religions of old (paganism), cultures, beauty, and the sense of harmony among each-other. All of this being cast aside by our oppressors has gradually led to people losing a sense of purpose. So he says that we must seek out the weeds, both within us and around us, and destroy feelings of fear, regret, sadness, and also overcome these oppressors. He also has told of how humans have made a grave mistake of idolizing logic, since logic is a tool and should not be held to such high regards. Logic must be held in balance with both the heart and spirit; for if a person lacks connection to just one of these, they fall apart inside. Logic is reasoning that guides the heart, the heart fuels the reasoning; the spirit is what shows us that there is more to existence than the physical and we are all meant for something more. By getting in touch with this, we can also begin to silence our Egos and realize that the nature around us is a part of us; we are not separate from Nature since it birthed us.
Thus, Osiandos says we all must live in harmony with one another, for we are all human and should not divide ourselves by race. In order to rise up against the opposition we face, we must not give in to the chains the oppressors try to throw over us. Instead, we must cling on to hope, beauty, justice, and the knowledge that we are all destined for something much more than what society says. We, as individuals, have great power to overcome anything, as long as we have faith in ourselves and come together as One.
Things he can help with: giving wise advice, giving encouragement, granting hope, self-empowerment, and teaching rhetoric
His Enn (for devotion or meditation): Neshan tasa anet Osiandos
Offerings: acts of benevolence towards those in need, honest acts against oppression, beautiful creations of art for communities to enjoy (Osiandos overall prefers offerings of benevolent action more than physical offerings for himself)
Cold water, white wine, yogurt, chestnuts, walnuts, almonds, cauliflower, beetroot, cloves, garlic, parsnips, onions, boiled potatoes, steamed or roasted fish, asparagus, ball-point pens, hardcover notebooks, philosophy books, smokey quartz, red jasper, beautiful art, classical statuettes, poetry, golden virginia tobacco, red sandalwood incense
*keep his altar space away from any weapons, war-related things, etc. He also does not expect any offerings from us but is even happy with simple things and prefers people to not spend too much on him

Language Of Birthdays: October 4 - Libra
[You can find the rest of the series here; or check out my masterlist]
The Day Of The Incorrigibles
Unlike most people, those born on October 4 simply live their lives and behave the way they wish to. Though they often present an agreeable and charming persona, they have an inner toughness that is the product of negotiating a less than perfect world. It's from this realistic and survival-minded core that they derive their ironic perspective, keen observations and sharp sense of humor.
October 4 people like things to go smoothly, but there is no doubt that they wish things to flow smoothly in the direction they themselves choose. They are able to exert their authority in a subtle fashion, so that they can be the boss without appearing so. As a matter of fact, this is quite a deceptive quality those born on this day can appear to be very relaxed and accepting people a good deal of the time, yet all the while are unyielding where their authority is concerned. Nonetheless, others find relaxed October 4 charm pleasant and soothing.
October 4 people have a unique if not eccentric view of the world. Yet when they share their ideas with others, they are more often than not accepted, appreciated, even loved, for their idiosyncrasies. Perhaps this is because they themselves enjoy people and partake freely of everything society has to offer. In this sense they are deeply human people, and have a strong bond with their fellow men and women. Rarely will they be snobbish, even if they move in high circles or breathe the rarefied air of success. Danger holds a great attraction for October 4 people. They don't look on it, however, as many see it (i.e., life threatening and negative). To them, dangerous situations are more often than not made dangerous through carelessness. Of course risks are involved, but for the most part, whether it is climbing mountains, scuba diving, or hang gliding, October 4 people simply take the necessary training and precautions and go for it, usually with good results. October 4 people pride themselves on their families. Even if they do not have children themselves, they are usually someone's favourite aunt or uncle, devoted husband or wife. They are very socially adept. This does not mean, however, that they dislike being alone, as long as this isolation is self-imposed. To prove the point, those born on this day display marked concentrative powers in doing solo work.
One difficulty many October 4 people have is that they are not ambitious enough and like having things pleasurable, comfortable and easy. Indeed, they have good taste and love to surround themselves with beautiful things. If they lack the necessary tension to forge ahead in the world, they may need a stimulus to inspire greater effort. Personal handicaps, obstacles, rejection in the workplace or a tyrannical authority figure can all serve to bring out their fighting instincts.
Strengths:
Tasteful
Socially Adept

Foolhardy
Advice
Those born on October 4. despite the care they take, are subject to accidental injuries of all kinds. This is particularly true because of their tendency to put themselves in dangerous situations. They must beware of falls, blows or accidental strains of the back and internal organs. particularly. Sex is usually a delicate matter for October 4 people, and they can be thrown out of balance quite easily in this respect, thus upsetting their emotional state and possibly affecting their health. Finally, the October 4 need to enjoy life fully too often includes tobacco, coffee and/or alcohol—these should be brought under control, or severely limited if possible.
Beware of becoming self-satisfied
Set yourself goals, and a timetable to reach them
Attend to spiritual matters
Use your time alone to improve yourself
Don't get stuck

Trinkets, 21: Interesting baubles, semi magical objects and items touched by mystery.
A gaudy purse containing items to assist a courtesan in soothing the body and mind. For the body, the kit contains a razor, scented oils and salves, fragrances and a few wisps of silk that is probably meant to serve as “clothing”. It also includes a book of poetry, focusing on salacious topics and full of double entendres, to entertain the mind.
A steel mask belonging to the former king who ruled over the nearby area. That land is no longer is ruled under the same form of government, the mask is a relic from the time the area was ruled by the iron fist of the tyrannical king.
A perfectly preserved sky lily that knowledgeable PC's will recognize as the only species that grows at the top of the God's Head, an incredibly high mountain.
A bolt of ironcloth silk, sewn by the clockspiders of ancient Dolm
An ornate urn filled with ashen remains. The markings on the urn signify they are the remains of an infamous religious zealot that was responsible for a holy war that killed thousands.
A metallic cylinder with a stout exterior casing. It is emanating a voice that repeats a message over and over. The message is approximately one minute in length and is in an old alien language that is only spoken by a few select scholarly linguists.
A small, tightly packed suitcase containing two decks of cards, a betting wheel, numbered cloths and four dozen coloured wooden chips.
A hunting trap that when set properly, forms a saw-toothed steel ring that snaps shut when a creature steps on the pressure plate in the center. The trap is affixed by a heavy chain, ending in a sharp spike that can can be wrapped around an immobile object or driven into the ground.
A mess kit consisting of a tin box containing a cup and simple cutlery. The box clamps together, and one side can be used as a cooking pan and the other as a plate or shallow bowl.
An apparent treasure map of the local area, written in an uncommon language with cryptic script and strange markings. It clearly holds the key to discovering something of major value to anyone who can decipher what it is saying.
---Keep reading for 90 more trinkets.
---Note: The previous 10 items are repeated for easier rolling on a d100.

A handful of bones of an extinct creature that was said to have been immune to magic. The creature was commonly thought to be something of legend and not actually real. It was said that magical power not only had no hold over the creature, but they even dampened magical effects around them.
A keepsake box with trinkets that probably belong to a local commoner. None of them appear valuable in the monetary sense but they undoubtedly hold tremendous sentimental value. Engraved on the lid are the initials S.N.

A scroll containing the secret recipe for the most popular ale in the realm.
A prosthetic hook hand that's infamously used by pirates and corsairs.
A shiny steel sheriff's badge of the local constabulary
A sealed tin of roasted bitter black beans. Chewing on the beans or grinding them up and boiling them in a type of black tea will grant the consumer one additional hour of wakefulness allowing them to delay (But not ignore) the effects of sleep or exhaustion. There are enough beans for ten cups worth.
An abrasive steel cord with metal handles on both ends of it. It can be used as a portable lightweight saw or as a garrote depending on the owner's needs.
A sealed tin of quality chewing tobacco
A collection of wooden slats and a cylindrical watertight canvas cloth. After ten minutes of assembly it forms a collapsible bathtub that can hold enough water to allow one adult human to bathe in comfort without any of the risks that might come from entering lakes, rivers, or other bodies of water
A simple folding chair made of a wooden frame and canvas seat and back, making it easy to transport and set up. It folds up easily, fits in a handy carrying bag and can support up to 250 pounds with ease.
A half dozen clay dolls that are said to hold the spirits of dead warriors from a mystic culture. It is said that the spirits will haunt any person that destroys the dolls. A faint whistling can be heard from the clay dolls whenever they are placed outside at night.
A iron blacksmith’s mold for crafting sling bullets
A iron blacksmith’s mold for crafting war darts
A half dozen shrunken heads that have been partially eaten, all strung on a braided hemp rope. Knowledgeable PC's will have heard rumors of a local cannibalistic cult that was active generations ago but it is thought that they killed themselves off, as the number of unexplained disappearances dropped over the years. The cult used abominable practices to shrink the heads of their victims to serve as offerings to their dark God.
A doctor's plague mask consisting of a close-fitting  leather  hood,  fitted with a long, conical “nose,” making the bearer look like some kind of bizarre bird. Doctors working in  plague-ridden  areas  are often  called  “carrion crows” due to this resemblance. The bearer sees through large eyeholes  covered  in  thick  glass and the “nose”  is stuffed with a quarter-pound of aromatic herbs,  which  are believed to shield  the  bearer  from  contaminated  vapors.
A  canvas hammock attached to strong ropes, that can support up to 200 pounds when hung from a heavy branch or two trees, allowing the user to sleep above the ground.
A wooden box containing all the tools needed to create quick drying clay plaster casts. According to the instructions on the inside of the lid, the user can mix one of the vials of plaster powder with water, set it in a footprint and allow it to fully dry, all within a five minute time span. The plaster cast of the foot / hand / paw print can then be preserved, analyzed or compared to later tracks. There is enough quick drying plaster vials to create five footprint sized casts.
A set of sturdy, weatherproof saddlebags that can be draped over a saddle or mount to add extra carrying capacity. Each side of a saddlebag can typically carry 20 pounds of items that can fit in the various pouches.
A bone-like object the size of a forearm made from a hardened mixture of animal marrow and minerals. Knowledgeable PCs will know it as a whet bone, which are given to domesticated carnivorous  animals to keep their teeth sharp.
A five pound canvas bag of carnivore feed, consisting of various kinds of meat that have been jerked, smoked and salted for preservation and can serve as adequate travel food for any meat eating mammal.
A five pound canvas bag of bird feed, containing a mixture of different seeds and dead insects that is suitable nutrition for small birds such as ravens, crows, and chickens. Birds of prey such as falcons, hawks, and owls can also sustain themselves on this, though they typically require at twice as much per day or to be further supplemented with small scraps of meat.
A hard-bristled tool commonly referred to as a dandy brush. It's handle slips over the bearer's hand, and is used by animal breeders, owners, and grooms to brush the animals in their care, loosening dirt and detritus from the creatures’ coats and stimulating the skin so it produces the natural oils that keep them healthy and clean.
A large canvas sack, commonly referred to as a bear bag. It is attached to a 20-foot-long rope, from which it can be easily suspended from a tree limb or similar anchor point. Placing foodstuffs or fragile materials in hanging sacks is often considered a basic precaution when camping in the wild, to prevent bears and other predators from rooting through the sack’s contents.
A burlap bag containing a week's worth of trail rations, consisting of coarse black bread, dried meat of uncertain origin, pungent peppers and thin sausages as hard as leather that must be chewed slowly to soften them. As long as it stays dry, it can go for months without spoiling.
A burlap bag containing a week's worth of trail rations consisting of sweetened dried fruit, aged sausage, hard sharp cheese, honey cakes, and a mixture of roasted grains, nuts, and molasses. As long as it stays dry, it can go for months without spoiling.

A burlap bag containing a week's worth of trail rations consisting of smoked sausages and salted meat, rounded out with hard biscuits and dried vegetables. As long as it stays dry, it can go for months without spoiling.
A burlap bag containing a week's worth of trail rations. This bland food consists of hard tack, jerky, and dried fruit. As long as it stays dry, it can go for months without spoiling.
A sealed one gallon cask of Baijiu. This clear alcoholic beverage, distilled from sorghum, is extremely potent, and is often regarded as an acquired taste due to its corrosive flavor.
A sealed one gallon cask of Scrumble. The brandy known as Scrumble is made from apples... Well, mainly apples, which in no way guarantees a low alcohol content. Scrumble is drunk in thimblefuls, is strong enough to be used for cleaning spoons, and should not be put in a metal container or allowed to come into contact with water.
A sealed one gallon cask of applejack. This even stronger version of hard cider is typically made by allowing hard cider to freeze during the winter cold, then removing the ice to extract much of the water from the cider and concentrate the alcohol.
A sealed one gallon cask of dwarven stout. More a family of beers than one single drink, dwarven stouts are dark beers characterized by a slightly burnt flavor and a foamy head, they are said to be as filling as a meal.
A sealed glass bottle of absinthe with the image of a small fairy etched on the glass. This green alcoholic drink, made from wormwood, is rumored to enhance creativity, which makes it a favored beverage of artists and eccentrics.
A metal censer suspended from chains, which can be filled with coal or herbs and used as a sort of portable brazier. Knowledgeable PC’s will recognize this as a thurible which is used to burn incense during religious services and ceremonies. Less spiritual creatures who acquire thuribles, often use the smoke to ward off insects, noxious smells or to burn intoxicants.
A relatively airtight waterskin that can be used as an air bladder for swimmers on longer dives. If inflated, it holds enough air to sustain an adult human for an additional 30 seconds.
A butterfly net about four feet long with a wide metal hoop covered by a thin mesh net on one end. It can be used to catch insects or to sift objects from material capable of passing through the net, such as sand or water.
A miniature treasure chest that yells loudly to shut it whenever it's opened.
A small silver signal whistle whose piercing report can be clearly heard up to a quarter-mile away

A ten foot length of standard iron chain
A small brass candlestick that will only allow the candle to stay lit for an hour at a time, no matter the size of the candle. Knowledgeable PC's will realize that this was likely meant to be used in a bedroom as a precaution against the user falling asleep with candles still burning, thus wasting the wick or risking a house-fire.
A small brass bell whose ringing is only audible to feline creature.

A small burlap bag containing a handwritten love letter, a small jar of strawberry jam and a smattering of pressed flowers.
A small metal rod that has a tiny sharp wheel on one end and a bulb on the other. Knowledgeable PC's will recognize this as a glass cutter and know that its function is to score the glass with the wheel and tap it with the bulb to break it. A dexterous or experienced PC will be able to break the scored glass into a single large piece without making much noise. Knowledgeable PC's are also aware that experienced thieves use glue paper with a glass cutter to reduce noise and capture glass fragments.
A palm sized, iron grappling hook
A small hourglass with a sturdy wooden frame and thick glass obviously meant for rough travel and adventuring. The hourglass contains a Random Colour of sand which takes 30 seconds to pass from top to bottom when flipped.

A sturdy ceramic jar with a heavy lid and a few tiny holes to let air in. It is half-filled with water and contains four adult leeches, each roughly six inches long. Knowledgeable PC's will know that leeches are sometimes used for medicinal purposes in order to drain poisons or to stimulate blood flow to areas of the body, such as in cases of frostbite or large stitched together wounds. A leech can survive for six months between feedings.
A small case containing a simple slate with a grid carved into its surface and a number of differently colored pieces of chalk.

Knowledgeable PC's will recognize this as a pyrography or woodburning kit and it is used to draw on leather or wood by burning it. Using the tools requires a fire source; the needle or stylus is heated in the fire and held in a thick leather handle, then used like a pen.
A soft leather case containing a vial for holding ink, an ink pen, spare pen nibs, a small container of pigment for making ink, a tiny knife for cutting quills into pens, a blotter, and a small ruler.

A small, iron armature consists of two parallel, studded bars that close together as the frame’s screws are tightened. A knowledgeable PC will recognize this as a thumbscrew, an infamous torture device meant to slowly crush and break fingers and toes.
A sharp, double-ended prong that is approximately nine inches in length and fitted with a stout leather neckband. A knowledgeable character will recognize this as a heretic's fork, a nefarious device is secured on a helpless target’s neck so the prongs pierce both the underside of the victim’s chin and the victim’s chest. If the victim begins to fall asleep the prongs jab deeper into flesh, effectively keeping the victim awake indefinitely and subjecting the victim to fatigue and exhaustion through sleep deprivation.
A wooden case which must have belonged to a forger, smuggler, or black marketeer. It contains templates for certificates, and tools for modifying or copying official seals facilitating the creation of counterfeit documents.
Magebane Mine, Inert: A ordinary looking red brick that knowledgeable PC's recognize as an ancient mage slaying mine. The theory was that it was able to detect the innate magical presence within an individual and detonate. It was an complex experimental weapon back in its day and doesn't seem to work properly at the moment.  The device has magical as well as mechanical components and they would be dotted randomly throughout entire towns in walls, roads and residential buildings effectively “protecting” whole areas from mages and spellcasting creatures. The mechanical components would explode if their enchantments were dispelled and their magical payload would detonate if their physical components were disabled, making them all but impossible to neutralize. In fact the most common way to disable one (Assuming it could be distinguished, as it blended in like a brick in a brick wall) was to purposely trigger it from afar which tended to cause massive property damage. A spellcaster was required for most of the mine's construction which would explain why they were not mass produced. No mage of the time wanted to be responsible for massacring their own kind. This specific mine seems to be defective as it's physical components are in disrepair and the enchantments have faded, but a skilled enough mage, engineer or artificer might be able to repair it.

i watched the original magnificent century on youtube back when it was still up with the english subtitles, but i have to admit i don't know much about ottoman history. why was murad iv awful?
Douglas Howard describes this:
[S]ometimes Murad walked around in disguise to observe the conditions of the world, traveling with Melek Ahmed Aga and his bodyguard. Often he would catch some brigands, dispatch their bodies to the earth, their spirits to the land of nothingness, and display their heads on pikes. He banned the coffeehouses, taverns, bars, and smoking dens, and in this way daily executed a hundred or two hundred men.
And Halil İnalcık states:
The tyrannical Murad IV was a habitual drinker, and at thesame time the most ruthless supporter of the prohibition against alcohol.
Jem Duducu says:
On one occasion he ordered the personal guard on his barge to attack washerwomen on the shoreline. Their crime? Singing.  On  another  occasion  he  ordered  all  the  concubines  into  the swimming pool where they had to tread water to stay afloat, while he fired a slingshot at any woman who tried to get out. Some of them drowned. Random  violence  wasn’t  aimed  only  at  women.  Later  in  his  reign,  on hearing that his grand vizier had beaten his mother-in-law, Murad IV ordered his execution. He also liked to fire arrows at fishing boats on the Bosphorus if they strayed too close to the palace perimeter.
Now I’d advice to take this with a grain of salt, especially since there are no sources cited, but it’s not the first time something like this has been mentioned. William Davis states that he would patrol the streets and taverns in disguise at night, beheading those who violated his prohibitions. Similarly to Dudu, Francis McCullagh writes that “he would sit in a kiosk by the water near his Seraglio Palace and shoot arrows at any passerby or boatman who rowed too close to his imperial compound, seemingly for sport”.
It was incredibly ironic and hypocritical considering that Murad IV was a habitual drinker and would often drink himself into a stupor—the cause of this death was cirrhosis of the liver.
None of this was for reformation. He banned coffeehouses to stop the Janissaries from gathering there to conspire. He banned alcohol and tobacco under the pretense of it being “un-Islamic”—in reality the bans were a demonstration of the disappearing state authority and a means to restore it. Murad IV measured his authority according to the extent to which the people adhered to his ban.

Fellow South Africans, your participation is needed now more than ever to ensure that the draconian "State of Disaster" regulations come to an end.
For two years, South Africa has been under a "State of Disaster," providing a handful of parliamentarians excessive power. We've seen this power used to ban the sale of flip-flops, ready-to-eat meals, alcohol, tobacco and to stop people from leaving their homes after a specific time.
Minister Dlamini-Zuma recently published new regulations that enable medical staff or the police to force you into isolation. The new rules allow medical samples to be extracted from you and contain you against your will.
It's terrifying to imagine what laws and legislation our government will propose next. This is not normal. It's not right. We've had enough, and we want it to STOP.
Whole industries have been crippled, businesses forced to close, and tens of thousands lost their jobs. Law-abiding citizens have criminal records for no reason, and lives have been unnecessary taken. This situation is unscientific and an undeniable tyrannical overreach by our government.
We believe that if no one stands up and resists extension after extension, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will never stop or give up this unconstitutional power.
Faster than you assume, South Africans' rights and freedoms have been systematically eroded. And with every new regulation, restriction, and policy put in place to "flatten the curve" or "control the spread," the power-hungry hands of politicians are tightening around our throats.
We must draw a line in the sand. No person or institution must ever have this power again.
There can be no shadow of a doubt that ending the State of Disaster is the will of the people. Together we can once again ensure that the people shall govern South Africa.
End lockdown restrictions now.

In this audio listen, Nikola Tesla is critiquing the National Prohibition Act, arguing scientifically, the foolishness of the legislation. The scientist asserts that alcohol, in moderation, is far less injurious than smoking tobacco, drinking tea/coffee, and chewing gum. Tesla concludes that the legislators of the Volstead Act are causing more harm than good, and that their tyrannical actions are exceeding their authority.

Historians Find Evidence Of Nation’s Founding Lobbyists’ Campaign To Influence Constitution
WASHINGTON—Drawing on a trove of letters, diaries, and itemized receipts recently donated by private collectors, historians from Georgetown University published new evidence on Wednesday of the Founding Lobbyists’ intense behind-the-scenes campaign to influence the U.S. Constitution.
The documents reveal a concerted effort by America’s earliest corporate power brokers to curry favor with the Constitution’s framers during the 1787 Constitutional Convention all the way through the ratification of the Bill of Rights in 1791, with delegates having been pampered with gifts such as expensive pocket watches, casks of fine Caribbean molasses, and extravagant quail-hunting trips to the Province of Massachusetts Bay.
“What we’ve learned is that these men—acting on behalf of cotton, barrel, and livestock interests, among many others—played a pivotal role in crafting the Constitution as we know it,” said professor J. Wilson Adler, noting that, for example, the Third Amendment barring the nonconsensual quartering of soldiers was only added after James Madison was treated to a feast of succulent brisket and stewed pumpkin care of the powerful boardinghouse industry. “For all the Founding Fathers’ brilliance and vision, it’s now becoming clear just how much the final language of the Constitution was shaped by, say, complimentary jugs of quality mead or all-expenses-paid gambling jaunts aboard company-owned schooners.”
“These lobbyists knew full well that if you wanted first-rate treatment for your patrons in Providence or Charleston, you made sure that gilded ivory walking canes found their way to the delegates gathered in Philadelphia,” he added.
Evidence also suggests that the original lobbyists were skilled in dampening opposition to their clients’ agendas. Recovered ledgers revealed that an early attempt at universal healthcare—via a welfare clause in Article IV—was voted down after an advocate for the Apothecaries Guild procured front-row duel tickets for the entire Pennsylvania delegation.According to witness accounts of the time, the Constitution’s authors were regularly spotted in the colonies’ most exclusive taverns, where a different member of the wax or beaver pelt lobbies would cover their exorbitant three-figure tabs and lavish them with exquisite silk garments and spices from beyond the Orient. Preserved woodcuts depict a number of Founding Fathers relaxing on the palm-lined beaches of Hispaniola as they and their families enjoyed luxury accommodations courtesy of the sugarcane industry.
In addition, personal letters from Thomas Paine and John Adams credit the introduction of the Second Amendment to representatives of the Musket Manufacturers Association, which funded a series of vicious attack broadsheets targeting anyone who spoke out against it, accusing critics of being tyrannical monarchists who harbored a secret plot to seize the colonies’ flintlocks.
“Of course, the grandiose spending and backroom deals at the Constitutional Convention did lead to some scandals, like Benjamin Franklin being arrested in a courtesan house with a saddlebag of pure snuff that had been provided by tobacco growers,” said Adler, adding that there was also widespread public outcry following revelations that the Slave Traders of America had donated “1,500 prize hogs and 250 stout men of West African stock” to certain delegates in exchange for an abolition amendment being dropped. “Despite these unseemly episodes, Founding Fathers like William Livingston and Gouverneur Morris actually went on to become Founding Lobbyists themselves, using their insider knowledge to command thousands of gold guineas from the blacksmith and whale oil industries.”
“Indeed so much of our nation’s identity can be traced back to this small group of well-connected lobbyists,” he continued. “Their signatures may not be on the document, but they left a legacy that remains with us to this very day.”
