ma’am… the way i would actually EAT up that hockey au you just drafted… if you’re ever feeling ~long winded~ again and want to add on i would NOT be opposed
OKAY so like,,, thoughts
Tobin was definitely a first overall pick, none of their soccer teams have NHL teams in the same city (except chicago and this is not a blackhawks positive space, if you've read my ao3 bookmarks and wanna call me a liar for that shut up) so lets say that she's in,,, LA, because thats fun
So Tobin plays for the Kings and she's chill with that. sure the support isn't really there on the roster anymore and its a sports town but its never going to be a hockey town, so the arena has fans but its not like its an original six franchise, she gets it, they've already won a cup and she'd like to repeat it but she's fine. she's fine
and Christen plays for the maple leafs. because this is MY au its for ME. but she hates it lowkey because the media are on her back All The Time and its Cold and she was the second draft pick and they keep playing her at left wing when she should a centre
oh and when she went second she was Big Mad. like jack eichel having to sign connor mcdavid jerseys Mad about it.
but again, she's fine. its fine. they're fine. its FINE.
except that christen misses the sun and all she's ever wanted to do is play hockey but half the media in this city don't even think she can do that, and people are lording her as a saviour but critique everything she does and this isn't the way the dream is meant to be. she was meant to go first (she was meant to go to LA) and she was meant to love it.
and okay the maple leafs only play the kings twice a year, so lets say they miss each other their first few years in the league or w/e, tobin is injured when christen makes her debut against them and then christen is scratched the next game and stuff like that keeps Happening so it isn't really a Thought.
but then they do play each other, and the aforementioned interactions occur
but then like,, they're on the same US team so they Have to get along. they Have to be teammates, and neither of them are captains (becky still is lmao) but its Important that they show unity to the team
and so christen makes it her personal mission to Platonically Acquaint Herself with tobin like she hasn't spent the last three to four seasons thinking about her hands, and how quick she is, and how she's probably skilful in other areas too-
the most shocking development to this is that tobin exhibits no pushback to them being friends. she's like yeah sure dude :D and christen is all - :] ?
and so they're wondering around the world championships doing everything together. they eat together. they sit together at tape. they have stalls next to each other in the lockeroom. and the rest of the team is like.... okay dyke.
until one day at breakfast someone is like. hey why didn't you tell us you were dating.
and christen is like DATING???? ME?? & HER??? we're riVaLs. meanwhile tobin, who is holding her hand on top of the table and spent all of last night when they were rooming together telling christen all her fears is like, yeah dude why would you even think that?

What job do you think each uswnt player would have if they didn’t play soccer professionally?
Abby - this reminds me of how I have no feel for her personality at all. Life coach.
Crystal - will drag Pierre out to the Blue Ridge Mountains to buy a 27 acre alpaca farm
Tierna - NASA this is too obvious
JJ - stay at home wife
Lindsey - technical director
Rose - au pair
Carli - President, VP, CEO, and CFO of CL10 Enterprises, which would somehow find a way to exist even if she weren’t a soccer star.
Sam - international aid worker
Alex - supermodel with a stay-at-home husband, just like now
Alyssa - PT, but invests her money wisely and retires at 45 so she doesn’t have to deal with people and can retreat to her crosswords and coffee at home with fresh flowers on her breakfast room table.
Kelley - should have studied law if she’s going to spend hours arguing with Vlatko over 6 inches positionally. Feels like she’d be a pit bull in the courtroom.
Press - CEO of something important, obvi
Tobin - trophy wife to Christen because they were meant to be even without soccer.
Ash - interior designer
Ali - color commentator
Pinoe - AOC’s VP. This can still happen.
Becky - owner of a gaming cafe that has cats milling around and sells CBD coffee
Sonnett - pre-K teacher by day, youth soccer coach by night

Did you watch the first Group stages for the Olympics? Thoughts? Do you think the US could have done better if Ash/Ali were there?
Not surprised by any of the stage results so far, tbh. Let's break it down team by team and go from there with my hot takes lmao:
GBR vs. CHI
Chile, while they have a GOAT in Endler, just doesn't have anything else to win, so they're never going to get passed the group stage, or if they do, it will be on a miracle. Like we've seen, good GKs can only keep your team in the game, whether or not they can stay in it is up to them. England has a strong squad and had a great start, and I think they'll hold up just fine in their group even against Canada or Japan for that top seed. They have enough gelling for them to work.
JPN vs. CAN
Two words: Steph Labbé. This is the Ashlyn Harris/Alyssa Naeher combo we all wish we could have. The heart she had to commit the PK, and then save it? A legendary move and I honestly felt for her that she had to be subbed out. Kailen, though, she's still so young and this is a great experience for her and knowing her, she's only going to continue to drive to improve and be better next game (even though that goal was a really tough one to save and came off some poor defending) - the CANWNT run into the same problems as the Pride sometimes; they're not out there to go and score a whole bunch of times, rather they score once and then defend the rest of the match. I need to see more attack from someone other than Sincy (congrats on her 300th cap and 187th goal, btw, absolute lengend) or Prince. Get some more attacking power in there because Japan isn't a team that will go down quietly, just likely they showed today.
BRA vs. CHN
Marta magic baby! The link up between Marta and Debinha, and just everyone on this team is so inspirational to watch. I honestly would LOVE to see them pull through and win this whole thing because no one deserves an Olympic Gold than Marta and Formiga. Their retirement is going to be the most emotional moment in women's football, even more than when Abby and Christie retired, tbh. China has some moments, but again, Brazil brings so much experience. I don't know how deep they can run into this tournament given how old their best players are, but they'll give it everything, no doubt. I want them to make it to the final rounds, or at least for the Bronze medal match, because the OGs deserve to go out with a medal.
ZAM vs. NED
Boy, this was an absolutely thrashing. I mean, there was absolutely no mercy by the Netherlands, but major kudos to the Zambia team for fighting hard to make that GD 7 instead of 10. They managed to score on a very good keeper and cut through a solid defense, even if they got blown out of the water. The drive was unreal and massive props to them for fighting to the last second. The Netherlands proved in this match why they were the 2019 finalists, and honestly, I'd be surprised if they're not back in the finals again this year. They're strong, meticulous, lethal on the attack, and defend very well. Not to mention they have a great blend of youth and experience for depth.
AUS vs. NZL
I mean, I hate to say it, but I don't see either of these teams going too far in this tournament. They both are big bodied, rough and tumble teams, but I honestly think it's a bit of a disadvantage than an advantage. NZL has never been particularly good, but kudos to them for clawing back and not getting shut out. On paper, the Matildas should have a great chance of going far, but I don't know if they can given who else is in their group. Maybe they can be in the top third? I still don't see it as likely, but no way is NZL going anywhere further.
SWE vs. USA
The match of the hour, huh! I mean, are any of use actually surprised at this result? The USWNT have been playing lower tiered teams and NOT blowing them out for the past year. Vlakto has made decisions to bring on older veteran players and barely healthy players like Jill did in 2016, except with a slightly weaker/disjointed defense. Look, I won't hide my inner glee at the karma inflicted by the soccer gods on this "the Olympics should be easy" USWNT team, but I'm gleeful. The revenge story fell flat and they showed themselves to be unable to make changes on a dime or adjust to the context. The ball to the face from Tobin's own kick was an accurate summation of the match. Now look, the USWNT will most likely bounce back and they'll probably at least make it to the semi-finals if not the finals. But, given the performance of Sweden, the Netherlands, and even Brazil, I'm not sure how they can withstand the firepower and strength of these teams when they've not played higher-calibre teams in a long time. Sweden put on a clinic with how organized, level-headed, and clean they were with their efficiency. The absolute dedication to pushing and attacking and defending and knowing their roles was outstanding and an absolute joy to watch. I felt happy for them and I believe that the USWNT are going to need a lot more than a redemption arc to get far in this tournament, but still, I think they should be okay so long as they don't rack up injuries or get gassed. Alyssa Naeher is the only reason they didn't get blown out, tbh. She is a star on the USWNT even if she's subpar in her club performance. She thrives at the international level and is so, so good and clutch.
Now, to answer your question about Ash/AK, no I don't think them being on the roster would change anything. Ash would never see a start even if she's a better club player than Alyssa, and tbh, she wouldn't make a difference here. Alyssa did a really great job and she definitely still is the #1 USWNT keeper even with the three goals conceded this match. Ash is great in clutch moments, but she has no big tournament experience so it's hard to tell if she could thrive under the pressure (I think she'd be fine, but there's no real evidence to back that claim since she has never played in a big tournament). AK might have added some leadership/consistency to the backline, but again, she didn't have a great performance in her last camp and her club performances have been rather inconsistent, even if they're still good. I don't think she should've made the cut or been on the roster.
The only person that should've been on the roster, in my opinion, but wasn't is Midge. She has proven time and time again she can play at any position and is versatile, strong, tough, and fast. She should've been the alternate over either Kruger or Lynn any day of the week. It will be interesting going forward how Vlatko rotates his players or if he will play the same Starting XI against a weaker NZL team. If everyone starts and subs, I worry about depth and conditioning especially for the older vets like Pinoe, Becky, and Llyod.

Do you know any good Preath fics where they both play professional soccer? I feel like I always read ones where Tobin is the professional soccer player and Christen is a yoga instructor or something. Those fics are good, but I’d like to read one with both of them being professional soccer players.
Hey! The fics that fit that description closest are the fics that have USWNT AU or NWSL AU in the description next to the fic title in the rec list !

You say you have mooore of that au and today's my bday so *waits for it as a present* 👀
Wait it’s your birthday?? Well I’m not a monster so enjoy some build:
The final is one of the most anticipated matches in women’s soccer history. Supergirl and Thor and the rest of the USA are going to take on Brazil. “In Brazil they boo you if you don’t play with style!”“I am aware, Kara, we’ve discussed this.”“But are you going to play with style?”Lena swings her head around to face Kara whose face is two inches from Lena’s where they sit on the hotel couch, Kara looking more intent than that time she was trying to beat the ten-year-old prodigy at a juggling competition in one of the soccer camps they visited, Lena looking faintly annoyed. “Are you going to play with style? Is it even possible for a Keeper to play with style?”Kara shrugs, suddenly nonchalant and obviously hiding something. “It might be.” Lena snorts and looks back at her laptop, doing her best to answer emails despite Kara’s creeping closer. “What are you doing anyway, that’s so important to distract you from soccer during the actual World Cup??”“Looking for an apartment in National City,” Lena said absently, checking on another.“What? Why?”Lena turned back to her, somewhat amused and wary all at once this time. “Do you really want me in your space nonstop forever?”“Yeah,” Kara said instantly. “Don’t you?” Lena could feel her mouth opening and closing several times but didn’t have any words to say. None of her roommates, hardly any of her friends, had ever wanted to keep her. Kara was already different. Already special. Lena didn’t want to push it. But Kara already knew she came from money and didn’t ask her for more rent, Kara had met her mother (unfortunate but hilarious incident, that, long story) and didn’t hate Lena for it, Kara had a sister and friends she already loved and still actively sought out Lena’s company. A knock on the door saved Lena from explaining the chaos in her brain, and it was time to go.
Kara had also been pestering everyone else on the team at least about playing with style. Sara and Lucy were into it. Very few others were even slightly on board. Kara’s ten minute barrage of “Lena I’ve seen you do the Tobin Heath move with your eyes shut and I know you can do a bicycle kick without breaking a sweat” finally wore down Lena enough to the point where she yelled Okay! I’ll do SOMETHING tonight, okay? And Kara’s grin was big enough to make Lena feel a little better about yelling at her. (Maggie commented hey remember when her face turned that red but it was because she hated you for scoring on her haha look how far you guys have come and Lena did not like the look on her face when she said that)
The cheers are deafening in the stadium. Brazil fans turn out. So do, as it turns out, does everyone of an even mildly queer orientation or affection. Lena stepped out of the tunnel and was momentarily stunned at not just the noise but the number of pride flags she saw. “We’re lesbian icons,” Sara informed her nonchalantly, seeing her face. “Two and a half lesbian couples on the team, and we kick ass, and no one’s been anything other than professional? It’s like the trifecta of awesome.”“Didn’t you make out with Ava on international television?”“It was PG.”“uh huh.” And then Sara shoves her shoulder and grins to ‘go get ‘em Thor,’ and she’s running off to warm up. Alex steps up to her side, nudging her hip and grinning. Maggie tugs at her ponytail and Lucy hops on her shoulders from behind, Ava’s laugh echoing and Kara turns around to beam at them all, and Lena feels something like family click click clicking away in her chest and feels a little less nervous.
(Tobin Heath has done a move where she does a rainbow and flips the ball up on her ankle and past the defender’s shoulder and it’s epic; the bicycle kick is a sorta famous move where you do a full backflip while kicking the ball, look it up if you haven’t seen it it’s epic but kinda impractical so it’s great)

Beyond the Pitch- AU

Beyond the Pitch- a Preath AU
They were the last ones in the bar. Their teams said their goodbyes hours ago and she still didn’t want to leave; it wasn’t the first time this has happened either. Instigated by her smile, she waged a war with her gut through the night. She should have left with her team. But debuting after 6 months out on injury just yesterday, Tobin wanted to celebrate. Despite it being a short time on the pitch, she thanked God to be back in it. With camps ceasing until mid-October, they will all scramble to their respective cities to fight for the championship. She didn’t plan on staying out this late but she missed this feeling. She missed her.
Being on the U.S. national team as teammates and competitive ‘enemies’ in club, grapples her insides unrecognizable. It’s always easy to be around her but she hasn’t heard her laugh for the better part of the year. She forgot how much she liked to be the cause of it. They always held each other to the highest competitive level and come next weekend, they face off in the semifinals.
The lights above them brighten to a blinding hue, a signal to get the fuck out, no doubt. They both politely wave to the bartenders as they leave. Slightly annoyed they look up from cleaning to wave back, “bye lovebirds!” Tobin blushes and feels a little guilty they shut the place down but ultimately she doesn’t care. It was a great win yesterday; she’s still riding the high from being on the pitch, playing for her country.
Tangled in each other, laughing, they turn toward the hotel a few blocks away. She loves hanging out with Christen just the two of them. It’s thrilling to be around her, all her senses come alive and she thirsts for it.
“So why have you been avoiding me?” Tobin asks in her momentary braveness.
Christen’s laugh fades into the alley behind them, “What?” she slows to a stop. Tobin’s arm drops off her shoulders as her momentum brings her paces ahead.
The only security Tobin feels is coming from the street lamp above them. Vulnerability never fails to besiege her when around Christen. She turns to face her, all tan and tone, unsure of everything. She answers her own question: maybe it’s because she was distant during her recovery, or she doesn’t enjoy being around her anymore—she doesn’t know.  All she knows is that something doesn’t feel right. They only saw each other for a few days at the same clinic in LA when Christen had therapy on her ankles. Tobin thought it was nice but she can’t deny that she avoided her after that. Anything associated with football brought her closer to heartbreak because she couldn’t play the game. So she cut off most of whom she knew and found new meaning in her days. But at camp, she was willing to welcome it all back.
“What do you mean?” Christen awkwardly questions, pulling her sweater to cover her exposed shoulders looking everywhere except at Tobin.
“Come on Chris…” Tobin knows she understands the question. There has been more tension than usual and it’s affecting their on-field chemistry. “You’ve been like this since camp, what—
“No, I haven’t!” Christen squeaks a little louder than she intended. “I-I haven’t been like this since camp…”
Tobin steps closer reaching out for her arm and when she doesn’t pull away she rubs her thumb to soothe her lies away. “Yeah, you have…” she whispers.
Christen finally looks Tobin in the eye and tilts her head, “I guess I just got used to not having you around.” She snaps.
The mood suddenly shifts and Tobin can feel Christen pull away. She drops her hand to her waist feeling the cool air hit her palm.
“Oh.”
Feeling small, Tobin puts her hands in her pockets.
“Put your sweater on if you’re cold…” Christen offers stiffly as she walks past her toward the hotel.
She’s hurt that Tobin can just drop everyone so easily, especially her. It wasn’t long ago that she began to feel confident around her and believe that they had something more than just comradeship. It could all be in her mind—it must have been.
Tobin stands in the smell that lingers behind her; she always smelt like gardenias and soap. She can’t find the words to fix this moment. It’s not like the distance was about Christen at all. She had to limit her exposure to everyone. It was a spiritual healing as well as physical and she’s convinced that the distance was necessary. She debates on whether to let her go or chase after her.
“Chris!” She decides on the latter and jogs up to her. “Hey…” she catches up and grabs her shoulders to slow her down, “wait please.”
Christen stops and stands tall on the balls of her feet not wanting to appear as weak as she feels.
Tobin is so elated that she actually stopped; she let a small laugh escape her lips. An automatic mistake because Christen scoffs and continues her path to the hotel at an even faster pace.
She curses at herself, “shit—no— Chris wait!”
“Why?!” She turns in a huff, “So you can laugh at me?! You know…I thought—” She shakes her head and turns away.
Tobin catches up, “You thought?”
“Nothing.”
Christen keeps walking with crossed arms as Tobin struggles to broach the subject again but she keeps at Christen’s pace. She needs to offer an explanation or this might escalate into something else entirely. She convinces herself that she needs to fix this for the team.
“Are you upset with me?” Tobin asks softly. She knows the answer already but she tries an easy one to get her talking.
She doesn’t.
The hotel gets closer every step they take and Tobin feels that they’ve taken way too many without saying anything. She fears that they’ll arrive before talking it out.
At a last ditch effort, she offers some truth in hopes of some in return. “Christen, I don’t know what you want me to say? I didn’t mean to hurt you, I just needed time to find myself outside of soccer.”
When Christen keeps walking up the sidewalk leading to the hotel doors, Tobin’s heart sinks and she holds back. She lingers, kicking at the concrete in defeat, ready to spend the whole night outside. The brisk night air might quell the burn in her chest. Her brain starts to predict how it will be between them from now on, how practice will be in future camps and that she never—
“Are you coming?”
Her heart skips a beat at the unexpected sound of her voice. It’s closer and softer than she expected. When she lifts her head, she sees Christen sitting on the bench right outside the entryway. Tobin keeps her hands in her pockets as she makes her way over, afraid of upsetting her again. She walks up to the bench and hesitates. Christen pats the spot next to her, inviting her to join.
She sits down stealing a few glances at Christen’s face. They sit in silence, both unsure of each other. The moon is out and dawn is still a few hours away from breaking. The world stands still at this time of night. Tobin loves it because it feels like time is infinite.
“You’re right,” Christen reluctantly admits.
Tobin looks up.
“I have been avoiding you.”

After Tobin comes home from rehab, she expects a nice recovery with her fiancee. But of course, life is never that simple. When Christen leave to play in Sweden, Tobin needs to learn to be independent again as Christen struggles to decide whether she wants what's best for Tobin or what Tobin insists she wants for her.

Currently writing a Preath college AU fic and I'm the queen of being as accurate as possible with every detail even if it's fiction and anyways, I feel like Tobin wasn't as much of a player in college as almost every fic makes her out to be and I just don't know what to do. Like should I write Tobin as a jock or as a chill soccer player who plays soccer and sometimes studies and how should I write Christen as? Like I feel like both of them were pretty low key and shy or chill in college. Anyways, I hate that I have to be so extra by being so accurate and end up doing so much research just to write fics but it's kind of my thing

Chapters: 23/? Fandom: Women's Soccer RPF Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Tobin Heath/Christen Press Characters: Christen Press, Tobin Heath, Mallory Pugh Summary:
“Christen? It…it is you, right?” Tobin sounded a bit unsure now.
Christen wanted to say something but she felt like she’d forgotten how to speak - like she was 15 again meeting Tobin for the first time. Her eye had caught the light reflecting off something on Tobin’s finger and she was certain she was going to pass out.
Right there, right where she saw Tobin put it on 12 years ago, was Christen’s ring.
“You know I waited for you. I waited for you until that loud u-17 coach threatened to make me run laps for the whole camp. I was so sure you were going to walk into the changing room, Christen. Where did you go?"

Chapters: 10/10 Fandom: Women's Soccer RPF Rating: Mature Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Tobin Heath/Christen Press Characters: Tobin Heath, Christen Press, Megan Rapinoe, Ali Krieger, Ashlyn Harris, Kelley O'Hara, Alex Morgan Additional Tags: Alternate Universe, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, I mean kinda?, Angst with a Happy Ending, Slow Burn, they're exes so theres that, Lawyer!Christen, Footballer Tobin, Post-Break Up, Breaking Up & Making Up Summary:
Christen hadn’t ever meant to get divorced. That had never been in the plan. They were meant to live in the suburbs by now. Close to a train line and a shopping complex but with parks they could take the dogs to on weekends. There was meant to be a nice office with leather chairs and too bright art on the walls, forever rotating as Tobin came up with new things to hang. She would keep fresh flowers on her desk and answer calls with ‘Christen Heath, associate at law, may I ask who is calling?’, like something out of a childhood fantasy.
Instead, she was 32 and a divorcée. Her engagement ring sat buried in the bottom compartment of a jewellery box. She’d left her wedding band in the apartment in Portland, propped next to the fruit bowl on the kitchen counter, on top of the thick envelope of half signed divorce papers with a note that just said "all the best."
Or; Christen and Tobin have been divorced for five years. They reunite over pre-made supermarket salad. It doesn't exactly fit Christen's best laid plans.
