III - The Caligo District
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Your exit from the party venue was rather stealthy considering the circumstance of your current dress.
After politely excusing yourself from the two men working in the press, you were able to slink through the ballroom. Your only mistake was being so cautious in watching your father and His Highness that you walked right into the snake's gaping maw.
You felt him before you saw him, charging face first into a solid presence. Before you could wobble and fall in your heeled shoes, you felt his hands quickly steady you at the waist.
"My Lady Olores!" Simon Clarke gazed down upon you. His expression was a strange mix of worry and hope. "I would hope your condition has improved?"
You gasped, jaw going taught as you wrenched from his grip in the most polite way you could. A bachelor like him holding onto you would surely have drawn eyes.
"Ah– actually Simon I'm going to get some fresh air. This party is suffocating."
Simon frowned, his brows drawing together. "Oh, about that dance? Would you say you're still–"
"I'm sorry– I missed the washroom and I'm at a point of retching."
He took a step back at the simple word, eyes suddenly blown wide before a nervous chuckle left him.
"Another time then, My Lady."
You nodded curtly at him, lifting your dress to whisk yourself from the venue and into the slowly cooling air of Aves. You swallowed a deep breath of relief, brushing Simon's touch from your dress as you trudged down the curb towards your carriage.
You were pleasantly surprised to see the very same coachman as before tending to your father's mares. A satisfied smile found your lips.
He turned upon the sound of your footfalls, surprise overtaking him seeing you unaccompanied and exiting the party early.
"My Lady Olores! Uhm– is there any way I can help you?"
You noticed the new tint his face had taken, color burning up his cheeks and down his neck. You gave him your prettiest smile, offering him a single gloved hand in which he took rather timidly.
"There absolutely is, good sir," you let him lead you to the carriage door, popping it open. "I would ask that you return me to Cygnus. I require a moment from the party…"
The coachman nodded quickly. "Of course, My Lady. Shall we arrive at your estate?"
You hummed. "Actually– I would much prefer to be left in the city square. I have a few errands." You made yourself comfortable, flashing him another smile. "I leave myself in your capable hands, hm?"
The coachman straightened at your speech, sputtering a bit to himself in embarrassment. "Yes, My Lady! We'll move at once!"
He quickly closed the door, moving round to the front and preparing the horses. You felt rather satisfied by your technique.
You allowed yourself to remove your gloves as the carriage startled into motion. With the pace taken by the flustered Coachman you would be arriving at Cygnus in no time to follow your lead.
What would it be like, if you could see him again?
Your parting from Lev upon the death of your mother and baby brother had been quite the tearful occasion. To think, the last time you had seen his face it had been streaked in tears.
It wasn't your favorite memory– especially not of him. The two of you used to get up to so much delightfully wonderful trouble that such an upsetting memory could hardly be used to remember him by. Lev was always there– even when your mother first fell ill and your other playmates drew far. He was like a rock shielding you from the viscous pounding of the ocean's waves.
You glanced out of the small window, fogged from the recession of the early morning dew. If you saw him again after all of these years… What would you say?
You knew you could recognize him in a heartbeat. You just don't forget a boy like Lev Haiba; not with that shock of silvery hair and those eyes like giant, round emeralds. But would he even recognize you?
You let out a groan of annoyance from the pretentiousness of your thoughts. Surely he would recognize you! He was your best friend, after all. Surely the weather of a few years wouldn't decay that bond.
Your fingers twisted the hem of your dress, nails picking at the laces of your bodice to just barely loosen it. The change in atmosphere outside of the carriage cabin told you that you would be arriving soon.
Cygnus wasn't too far from the capital city– being the kingdom's most prominent trading hub it's relative closeness had a myriad of positive effects on the city's economy.
A deep sigh left you. Who knew that the trading hub would begin to attract pirates? You knew that there were parts of Cygnus– parts your father forbade you to visit– that served as little dens of sin for the less morally sound. Your father had decided complete erasure of things like taverns would destabilize the city's infrastructure far too much, and so he settled on keeping you far from that section of Cygnus.
Everyone called it Cygnus' Caligo district, for reasons you were unsure of– and you had been curious about it your entire life. Now that you were hunting down pirates to somehow find your childhood best friend, it was your best bet. You would have to go against every rule your father had ever set, and enter the most dangerous area in your hometown.
To be fair though, a dangerous spot in Cygnus is far nicer than normal spots in most other cities…
The tiny window at the front of the carriage slid open, and you could hear the earlier coachman speak to you.
"My Lady, we are arriving in the city's square. I must ask– does Lord Olores know of this outing?"
You couldn't help but hiss at the question, composing yourself.
"Of course he does. He knew I wasn't feeling very well."
The coachman hummed at your response.
"My Lady, if you are feeling ill I would have no problem returning you home. If you tell me your errands, it would be my honor to complete those for yo-"
"That's completely unnecessary."
Your retort came quickly, and for a second all that was heard was the stamping of the moving mares. Then, he spoke again.
"Of course, My Lady. My most sincere apologies."
You bit your tongue, feeling guilty for reprimanding the man– however an apology could compromise your mission. Your payment would have to be apology enough.
The carriage rolled slowly to a stop, one of the mares giving a sharp whinny at the abrupt change in pace. The coachman hopped around to help you out.
You had already pulled your gloves back up to your elbows, taking his arm and hopping to cobblestone the ground. You steadied yourself on his shoulders.
"Thank you very much, sir. Here– for your trouble," You gave him a bright smile, placing the coins in his palm. "I very much appreciate your help."
The man shifted the coins in his palm before nodding.
"Do be careful, My Lady." He gave a small bow before returning to the mares.
In that time you had already begun your search for the Caligo district.
Its location had never been explicitly said to you– only that it was bad and that you should avoid it. So, you would have to ask around.
You made your way down the street, giving friendly waves and nods to all your neighbors as you traveled. Making your way slowly towards the more menacing parts of town.
Friendly people you had passed, who all recognized you immediately, gave very vague advice and directions. After all– defying you would be defying their Lady, but telling you wholly is defying their Lord.
Eventually though, the hints started to work out rather well.
When walking the streets of the port city the pristine lawns and clean cut hedges slowly morph into something a little unruly.
The houses stop looking the same, each more unique than the rest. The roofing takes on a characteristic slant– and the smoke runs a bit thicker. In this part of town, the people of Cygnus liked to shed their dignified shells to feed the gnawing bugs of release.
You held your hands close to your chest. All around you people appeared to be celebrating some unknown event– and the areas around you looked rather friendly despite earlier depictions given by the maids and men you knew.
According to them, it was no place for a dignified lady or maiden to conduct a social outing of any kind. People fought, and committed crime– but all you could see was partying, not much unlike the establishment you had just escaped.
A little ways down the bustling street, one establishment seemed to burst with so much music and festivity that you knew deep down you were headed in the right direction. The building was quaint, resting in a cute little nook favoring the harbor. Looking long-ways down the road would reveal the ships resting in port, and if anything screamed pirates it was the bar by the bay.
You stood outside, a determined expression on your face.
The heavy wooden sign swinging on the post outside proudly displayed the establishment's title. It read "The Sunny Sailor", likely referencing the waterside view. Next to the wording was an engraved picture of a sailboat, next to a smiling sun. It was cheery.
As you approached the building, a large and laughing man threw open the door. His belly shook with his laugh, a younger looking man hooked under one of his big arms. You recognized them immediately as the butcher and his brother– surprised to see them on this side of town.
"Oh! Mr. Davis!"
You called out to him, waving your gloved hand as you scurried forwards like a startled mouse.
The large man paused his laugh, color draining from his ruddy face as he watched his Lord's daughter approach him at a tavern.
"Oh, wow! If it isn't–" The man under his arm paused to hiccup, "The beautiful Swan of Cygnus!!" He laughed cheerily seeing you. "Must be my lucky day– a sweet drink and an even sweeter fac-"
He was quickly cut off by his brother, who promptly elbowed him in his stomach hearing his improper speech.
"Stuff it, boy! That there's the Duke's daughter!" He cleared his throat loudly, trying to remove the scowl from his face as he addressed you. "My Lady Olores! What are you doing here in this part of town? This shady place'll dim your shine!"
He laughed nervously, clearly far more sober than his younger counterpart. For that you were thankful.
"Oh, I am so glad I found you!" You came to a stop in front of both men, the younger humming.
"Glad we found you, toOOF!"
The butcher glared down at his brother again as you continued.
"I'm actually, well, looking for someone?"
The butcher's eyes squinted as he thought out your reason. "My Lady, I'm afraid you'll find none of your young lady friends in this here bar…" His frown was deep.
"Ah, well that's quite alright– I'm actually looking for a man." Your face felt hot with embarrassment from the admission. "I thought he could be here… because it's by the water… and well, pirates like water, yeah?"
His eyes blew wide. "My Lady! You're seeking out a–" he lowered his tone to avoid eyes, "A pirate? I'm sorry, but I can't allow you in there on a good conscience."
You went a bit panicked, afraid for a second, he might sell you out. "Please, Mr. Davis!! I need to find him! It's very important to my happiness!"
You pouted up at him, a tactic you would often use on your father that proved notoriously effective. The butcher sighed.
"Dohh… Fine! But if he's not here I'm taking you home!"
You nodded happily, following both men into the crowded establishment and disappearing from the street.
The stench of hard gin and rum permeated through the air in plumes thicker than you had ever inhaled before, making your nose scrunch up.
The inside was like nothing you would have ever imagined. All around the bar people danced merrily– not just men but also women in thin dresses with drinks in hand. The music was far louder inside, and laced with laughter and singing of popular shanties. Not a single person noticed your arrival.
You worked up the courage, clearing your throat before you began to yell.
"Uhm– Excuse me!! Hello!?" Not a single eye. "I'm- I'm looking for someone! Have any of you seen– or know of…" You sighed. Clearly that was getting you nowhere…
You chewed at your bottom lip, Mr. Davis' younger brother sidling up next to you.
"Seems to me you're in need of something a little louder."
You looked at him thoughtfully, eyes scanning down his frame to his hip where a holster rested. You smirked.
"That's a good idea… could I borrow your gun, good sir?"
He looked at you a little incredulously, as if his drunk mind couldn't comprehend your words, before he shrugged.
"Ehh, sure. Why not?" He slid the standard firearm from his belt to sit it in your open palm. You were handling it before the butcher could stop you, stuffing gunpowder down the nose and pushing the flash fan cover forwards.
You hoisted up onto a nearby table. A nearby candle to light the wick– and soon you were pressing the matchlock forwards in the air to dry fire the pistol.
It exploded in a manner loud enough to drop the bar into complete silence– and were you ever a sight to see. Any residents of Cygnus could immediately recognize you as the Duke's daughter, Y/N Olores. Yet– there you stood holding a pistol in one hand, the other bunching up the fabrics of your frilly ball gown.
All eyes were on you, shocked by your brazenness. You spoke before you could become too shy, handing the gun back to the man beside you as he gaped up at you.
"My apologies! I just– well you couldn't hear me…" The room stayed still as you spoke. "Can anyone point me towards the crew of The Black Cat?..."
People blinked up at you, before everyone slowly shuffled to form an empty pathway leading deeper into the bar. At the end there was a large round table, seating many men who all watched you with incredulous expressions. You couldn't help but smile, finally finding your way.
"Well! Uhm– back to the festivities then, thank you!" You hopped down from the table, and slowly as you made your way towards the infamous pirates crew, the festivities started once more.
The crew was eerily silent as you approached. A man sat in the middle, tall with dark hair and a sly exterior. A pipe hung between his lips, billowing smoke. The cards he held in his hands were forgotten after your show, and all eyes of the crew were on you… unfortunately, your friend was nowhere in sight.
Nobody uttered a single syllable, the crew staring you down– likely in utter confusion as to why a fancy maiden was hunting them down. If they wouldn't speak, then you would.
"Hello… I'm Y/N… Y/N Olores. Which one of you would be the captain of your vessel?"
The eyes around you slowly slid to the dark-haired man in the middle. He looked to be no more than a few years older than yourself. He inhaled his smoke, puffing it out and sitting the pipe on the table as he dealt out a few cards.
"So this is what your navy resorts to, huh? Trying to tempt us with a pretty young maiden?..."
His brow arched as he looked at you, some of his crew keeping to their drinks– but their eyes stayed on you.
"Wh- I beg your pardon?" You felt a little offended. "I'm not with any Navy! I come on personal business."
The dark-haired man was going to disagree, but the man next to him spoke up. He was much shorter, his hair– which had been bleached near the ends– hung in his eyes.
"She's not, Kuro. That girl's the Duke's daughter." He paused. "I don't think they're brave enough to send a prominent political figure's daughter into danger to nab a few pirates."
He looked up at you, cold, calculating, honey-colored eyes studying you silently. The aforementioned Kuro, who you supposed was the captain, suddenly stood.
"Well then– don't you think you're a little too rich to be here? Swan of Cygnus?" He held out his hand, and you could feel embarrassment building that the nickname was more commonplace than your actual name… "My name is Tetsurō Kuroo, but you can call me whichever you prefer." He arched his brow.
You took his hand, shaking it politely. "Nice to meet you, sir." Once you removed your hand, glove stained with gunpowder from earlier, you smiled.
You opened your mouth to speak– to ask– to finally find confirmation about your long lost friend. However, before you could loosen a single syllable, a door near the back of the tavern slammed open.
"Captain!! Captain, I heard gunfire!"
Your eyes drew towards the new commotion, body stunned into shock by the familiarity of it all.
A shock of silvery-white hair weaved through crowds and barreled towards where you stood. He shoved people out of his way, and when you could see him your breath left you.
He was incredibly tall– a far cry from the shorter boy you knew. He towered over most in the tavern, eyes still just as big, and just as green as he searched the face of his captain. His shoulders had broadened out– but you could tell he was still rather lithe. He wore his hair differently, parted and styled in a more mature and gentlemanly manner.
There was no denying it, though– even with his taller frame and deeper voice you knew him immediately. This was Lev Haiba.
His eyes slowly trailed from his captain to who stood across from him. You. Suddenly, his eyes went wide. His spine went rigid, and the empty tankards he held in his long arms dropped to the floor in his shock.
"Y-...Y/N?" He seemed to be in complete disbelief, but hearing your name fall from his lips sent you into such a frenzied state of joy– well– you didn't think.
"Lev!!" You squealed happily, running forwards to launch yourself into him unabashedly– much like when you were kids. He quickly opened his arms to catch you, pulling you from the ground and as close to his heart as he could manage. A happy laugh bubbled in his throat.
"Y/N, what are you doing here– why are you here?" He questioned you with a broad smile, pressed against your temple as he took a second to breathe you in.
You sobbed happily in his arms, clinging to him like he would disappear if you let him go. "I was looking for you! I heard you became a pirate– I got so worried I just had to find you!!" When you pulled away you had tears rolling down your cheeks, and he shushed you as he wiped them away.
"I… I thought you left Cygnus? I thought I'd never see you again."
Before you could even think to explain, you were interrupted by a cough.
Lev sat you down, and you both turned to find the entire crew was watching with wide eyes. Kuroo still stood, arms crossed over his chest.
"I think you owe me an explanation, Haiba?..."
While your reunion unfolded in the Caligo district of Cygnus, Arthur Olores still enjoyed his talk with His Highness– until your lack of return had begun to disturb him.
Simon attempted to walk past him– but your father grabbed him by the arm.
"Pardon me, son. Did you see my daughter anywhere?..."
Simon looked at your father, brows shooting up. "Oh, yes My Lord– She refused to dance with me on feeling ill. Said she needed air and promptly exited the venue."
Your father's eyes went wide as he looked at the prince. "I'm so sorry, Your Highness… I must find my daughter– she has an inkling for getting into trouble, and I fear the worst."
Prince Tobio shook his head. "No, Lord Olores. It was entirely the fault of my company. I will help you search." He nodded his regal head, and his aforementioned company began to fan out in search of you.
Your father hung his own head with a sigh.
"Oh, Y/N… where have you gone now?"

—KEI TSUKISHIMA
Tsukishima is a prince who likes to show off and one-up everyone, whether it’s materialistic possessions, his acclaimed achievements or his line of available suitors. For his habit of showing off, most other princes of other kingdoms are not very fond of him, so most of the time, he’s left to his own thoughts. Though, despite all this, all he really wants is for his people to truly see him for who he is, not what he can do, or what he is.
During a stroll through the market, Kei’s ears perked of the vibrations of such an enchanting voice, reading out children’s fables and stories to the passerbys. Kei usually reprimanded the local poets and storytellers for causing a blockage in the market’s path, but this time, he sat on an empty wooden log and listened. His mind followed with the words and his head swayed to the rhymes and rhythm. Before he knew it, the moon had replaced the sun, the market shop keepers had packed up and gone home and the children went to go have supper.
“Excuse me, my prince, but I’m very much so gracious of you using your time to hear my craft!” With a grin occupying your face, you bowed before hurriedly leaving. Kei was left dumbfounded. He couldn’t believe that such talent belonged to a person as divine as you. He wanted you to be by his side, and read him poems just for him. With a pleased mind, he made plans tonight to host a function at his palace and invite every poet or storyteller, just to see you again.

—KAGEYAMA TOBIO
Kageyama is a cold-hearted prince, who values power and wealth over the health and prosperity of his people. He has no regard for anyone’s feelings except his own and is willing to sacrifice anyone and anything in order to get what he wants. Some say it was because of the absence of his parents, or that no other kingdom was willing to make alliances with him. Even so, Tobio dismissed all of those rumours and continued his duties as prince.
You were just a measly maid at the palace, someone beneath him. He ordered you around to do mundane tasks or incredibly difficult tasks just to satisfy his ego. However, despite all this, you defended him against your gossiping co-workers.. Tobio can’t say for sure this made him fall in love with you, but it definitely did earn you some respect.
Although, what did make him fall head over heels for you, was when he was assigned you a task to mop and polish the ballroom floors by yourself. He was expecting an obedient nod and for you to hurry along, but you did the exact opposite. You screamed at him, something along the lines of it being unfair, being overworked and not ethnically correct. He didn’t listen to your words because he was so distracted that someone had even yelled at him. He just had to admit, your bravery made him feel weak at the knees. However, he isn’t the one to submit.

hydraulic heart (35k, ushihoshikage, T)
Kageyama Tobio's happy being alone. He's survived this long trusting nothing but his own instinct, and he doesn't want that to change. But when a taciturn noble catches Kageyama breaking into his ship and tries to recruit Kageyama as his pilot, his instinct tells him to say yes. It tells him to say yes again to the sharp, irrepressible off-worlder who ends up taking refuge in their cargo hold after a mission gone wrong. Thrown together by fate, the unlikely trio stumble across a plot which concerns them all — and the fate of their world as they know it. (Or: a prince, a spaceship thief, and a professional wrestler walk into a bar.)
new fic! space opera/found family vibes, and as always my kageyama and ushijima are autistic in very, very different ways. i hope you like it!
concept art/planning/thoughts under the cut!
so this is... not my usual fare at all! it's the longest thing i've ever written by over 50% (black nightshade is 14k), it's got an actual plot, and it's got a setting that i had to get roughly right before i could even establish the scale of the plot.
this fic was written for the tobio bowl event, a kageyama-centric ship exchange. my giftee (who seems to have dropped, so this is now a gift for everyone) requested the adlers trio as a ship, a slow burn, and an au, potentially royalty. this is technically a royalty au, in the loosest sense! but that's where i started, trying to work out how to slow burn these three as a ship in a universe outside canon. for me, that immediately suggested very different class and region origins (which is true in canon to some degree), and a crisis which forces them to understand each other.
the rest went from there! here's some art, then some snippets of insight into how i started developing this, taken directly from discord.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
feb 11
so here's the thing right. in an au you make characters recognizable by giving them not just similar temperaments but similar arcs so a) they retain their arcs. b) their arcs must intersect creating the enemies to lovers/slow burn c) they have to start at different places, of course ushijima's arc is always going to be like. respectful, quiet guy in power who hates the social side of things, but who believes wholeheartedly in the goodness of his power and rule -> working out the world is not that simple, finding joy and meaning and color in his life, rising to the challenge of meeting people outside his world i want there to be a power struggle especially since we're doing hurt/comfort and/or enemies to lovers. but like. interpersonal/societal hurt as in most of my fics bc that's what's interesting to me. sometimes the hurt is that the world is broken and the comfort is that you have each other. and enemies to lovers can be the personal betrayal being symptomatic of the bigger hurt
feb 22
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i wrote the fic roughly from march 15 to april 15, so clearly it had over a month to marinate (apart from one scene, the climactic one, which was written first in february!). then it all came together! between april and may i had help from my friend m, who did a wonderful job catching minor plot holes and errors. thank you!! i owe you my life.
and finally, a quick sketch of ushijima, the very first time i put any of them to (digital) paper, bc i saw a photo of a cape (that it turned out one of my friends has sewn???) and was like It's Him. the kageyama (and the fic graphic) came later!

Standing before the altar, hands in his, your voice quivered slightly as you spoke the sealing words, “I do.”
The cheers of praise from the five people who attended the wedding were clearly heard from the small church as you played with the material of your mundane dress in an attempt to calm your nerves. You didn’t even have a nice bouquet, instead you clutched onto a wilting flower that looked like it had been trampled by a tractor. Missing petals leaving it incomplete, a fraction of the way it was before.
Looking up at your husband, the man you were now tied to, he gripped onto your arm, dragging you out of the church and into the awaiting carriage before the minister could say, “You may now kiss the bride.”
You managed to catch snippets of the chatter flittering around the hordes of people that gathered outside the church. Their nosy faces that were pressed up against the glass were now unnecessarily sharing their opinions as if they were involved in your situation.
Lord Kageyama is getting married again?
I’m surprised the wedding was so small and cheap, what with all the wealth he possesses.
My aunt told me he was a nasty man; I feel sorry for his wife!
Look! Only five people attended the wedding.
I heard that she married him for the money.
You slumped into the confines of the carriage, this would be your life now. As Lady of the land and the wife of Kageyama, you would be a hot topic of gossip for many in the kingdom who had nothing better to do.
You could remember the happiness and pride on your mother’s face when she had heard the news of Lord Kageyama looking for a wife, and she was thoroughly overjoyed when he seemed to express an interest in you. Although you detested it, the idea and the man, you were forced by your mother’s hand into the unhappy proposition.
His dark eyes focused on the moving window of the carriage, his raven hair ruffling slightly, following the jerky movement of the vehicle. This was it; he was taking you back to his manor where you’d live out the rest of your days. Like a bird with magnificent wings, trapped in a small cage.
“L-Lord Kageyama,” you stuttered, were you even allowed to speak in his presence? His face flashed to you, eyes scrutinising.
The sudden attention made you flush, heat crawling across your skin, and by the look on his face, he could tell you were flustered.
“We will not be sharing a bed; I am not that desperate. However, the left wing of the manor will be yours to do whatever you please with.”
His words stung as you schooled your hurt expression into one of complete detachment. Turning your head swiftly to look away from him, you couldn’t help but wish he was as beautiful on the inside, as he was the outside.
It had been a few lonely days in the Kageyama manor. With only the company of your handmaidens in the morning and the servants during meal times, you felt isolated. Kageyama hadn’t even tried to be civil, always sending you strange expressions with hard eyes and a set mouth.
After waking up surprisingly happy, you decided to cook dinner yourself. You were craving your dads signature dish that he taught you before he passed; it always filled you with joyful memories of him. If here were here today, he’d reprimand everyone who had a role in your current situation, he was always a firm believer in following your heart, and you could only wish you were strong enough to follow in his footsteps.
It was midday when you popped down to the main kitchen to speak with the head chef about ingredients.
“Lady Y/n! Such a pleasure to see you,” the woman before you smiled, her short stature and kind nature was similar to that of a caring mum that doted on her children. You immediately recognised her as one of the guests at the ‘wedding’.
“Likewise, Chef Himari, do you happen to know where I could get these ingredients from?” You handed her your list.
“You’ll find the vegetables you’ll need in the garden but I’ll have the other ingredients brought to the upstairs kitchen for you in a jiffy.”
She handed you a straw basket and a small trowel as you thanked her for her kindness.
“I know it’s hard Lady Y/n being here like this but please give him a chance, he’s a good boy he is, known him since he was younger.”
You didn’t reply, giving her a small smile before you walked off to the garden, ready to procure your ingredients the old fashioned way.
Scouring and digging out your own vegetables was very unladylike and if your mother ever found you like this, she would pass out from shock. However, it was surprisingly fun, you could only imagine how much more enjoyable it could be if a certain someone was by your side.
You sighed, placing the last potato in the basket and carrying it back indoors. The vibrant colours drew you in and encapsulated your attention. Being so focused on the basket and how satisfied you were with your hard work, you failed to notice the other presence in the hall.
Colliding face first into his chest as the basket fell, vegetables rolled onto the floor around him. Scouring around, you tried to clean the mess quickly but froze when he spoke.
“Where did you get those?”
After not seeing you in five days, that’s the first thing he says to you? The hope for a proper conversation with him was squashed. You cleared your throat quietly and said, “I got them from the garden.”
“Who gave you permission? Do you know the expenses of raising a produce garden and you’re here just taking what you want?”
You were tired, of his mean words, his appalling treatment, you deserved better. The few strands holding the long rope of patience frayed, causing you to snap.
“Do you want me to pay you for them?” You reached into your pocket and presented him with one silver coin.
“I don’t want your money.”
“Then what do you want? Want me to beg on my knees?”
He didn’t respond, your joyful mood was quelled by his foul attitude as you pushed passed him, leaving it all behind.
“What about this mess?” He called out after you, anger as prominent as the vein in his head.
“They’re your vegetables after all, you clean them up.”
After a series of long shouts and a few grumbles from below your room, you heard a small knock on your door. Dressed in nothing but your short night gown to battle the scorching heat, you called out a gentle, “Enter.”
The door creaked open slowly as a head of raven hair came into sight. Kageyama stood in the doorway, eyes tracing over your scantily-clad self before snapping up to your eyes, a pink tinge to his cheeks. You turned away pettily, raising your nose to the ceiling. It had been hours since the showdown and it had ruined the rest of your day.
“I just wanted to say…. I’m sorry for what happened earlier and I want you to take this,” he held out the basket from before toppling with fruits and vegetables. He at least had the nerve to look bashful as he placed it on the dresser.
“Well, thank you for the apology but both my mood and appetite have been ruined, so return the basket downstairs for the cooks to use.”
His expression morphed into one of surprise, shock as he spoke, “But I said sorry.”
As if this magic word, once uttered, would restore everything to the way it was, as if his apology meant something to you.
“Do you think sorry will fix it? Do you think your pathetic ‘sorry’ will make me feel happy again?”
He remained quiet, as you really looked at him, half hidden in the dark. Yet, his eyes, so gloomy and dull struck you. Bowing slightly and grabbing the basket, he rushed out the door. His sad eyes were imprinted in your mind, wreaking havoc on you and keeping you away from sleep.
The next day was as uneventful as the first. After lounging aimlessly throughout the day you decided to return to your room and take a nap before dinner. Upon your arrival, there was a note left on the dresser.
Carefully fingering the edge as you took in the sandalwood scent that belonged to Kageyama, you opened it carefully.
We’re going to your mothers for dinner. Dress nice.
-          K
You rolled your eyes at his blunt demand. Dinner with your mother would be interesting to say the least, after throwing you into the engagement with Kageyama and watching you descend down the aisle, she hadn’t sent you a note since, probably bathing in the riches your dear husband sends her every month as consolation for stealing you away.
Your heart ached, wishing for your reasonable father to still be alive, the one who would save you and help you to live a fulfilling life filled with adventure every day.
Rummaging through your closet, you pulled out a gorgeous emerald dress that cinched at the waist before flowing delicately around you, bedecked with pretty bows and jewels, leaving a scandalous sweetheart neckline at the front.
After your handmaiden had piled your hair nicely on top of your head, you travelled outside and into the carriage where Kageyama was waiting for you.
The silence was suffocating as you both stared out the window in an attempt to avoid eye contact, you still hadn’t spoken since the day you shouted at him.
During the ride a ripple of the dress had uncomfortably folded in on itself, resting irritably under your upper thighs. Standing slightly, to discreetly pull it down, the carriage rolled over a large pothole, jerking it violently, causing you to fall. The box was small and so you fell forwards onto Kageyama, specifically between his legs.
The sudden pressure on his legs made him jump slightly as he stared down at you.
“I am so sorry,” you mumbled, apology after apology as you scrambled to get to your side of the carriage. He said nothing but the faint blush on his cheeks grew dark as he looked away. He didn’t look at you for the rest of the ride.
Dinner at your mother’s place was elaborate as usual. She had invited as many people as she could fit into the room and as soon as you entered, they all turned their hawk eyes on you.
Oh my! Lord Kageyama is here?!
His wife does not look happy.
Probably why his first wife left him.
The buzzing chatter dulled down to whispers as you felt a nudge to your side. Looking over you saw Kageyama’s arm outstretched and waiting for yours. Placing your hand in his, confusedly, he led you out onto the floor to socialise, but not before finding your mother.
“So glad you could make it my dears!” She squawked, curtseying shallowly.
“It’s our pleasure,” Kageyama replied stiffly, as she turned her attention to you.
“Smile dear, and stand up straight. You look like you’re being tortured.”
At her words, you could feel the brooding man next to you tense up, his hand unintentionally squeezing yours tighter. To appease your mother, you smiled as convincingly as possible.
A few passive aggressive comments later, she departed to mingle with the other guests, leaving you and Kageyama in each other’s company. Something you should both be used to by now yet it felt strange and uncomfortable.
“Would you like to dance?”
“Huh?” You asked dumbly, still trying to process if he was talking to you.
“Would you like to dance?” He repeated, now unsure of his approach. The drop in his confidence was noticeable as he grew hesitant.
You couldn’t hide the surprise in your tone as you whispered, “Okay.”
He whisked you onto the dance floor, twirling you around and giving you attention that had been absent since the day you were married. You smiled at him when he asked you if you cared for another dance, laughing at the absurdity of the situation.
That night, the wedding band on your finger felt a bit lighter.
The ride home did well to put a damper on your mood. You were more talkative now; the punch and atmosphere having loosened your tongue as you gleefully recalled the joy of dancing. The feeling of being twirled again and again until it felt like you were in another world.
“What made you ask me to dance anyway?” You asked curious about his sudden change in attitude.
“My image,” he replied curtly. His tone was always blunt and to the point, leaving no room for interpretation, yet you needed to hear him say it again.
“Your image?”
“Everybody there suspected you of being unhappy, so I asked you for a dance. Y/n, I married you for my image, outside of the manor we act like fools in love, but away from prying eyes we go our separate ways.”
Although it hurt, the intentions of the marriage didn’t really surprise you. Having it confirmed however caused your heart to sink into despair, you would never have a love like a fairy tale where the prince loves unconditionally, instead you were stuck between a resenting husband and a lifetime of loneliness.
You had been avoiding Kageyama. His footsteps echoing off the halls prompted you to hide away and whenever you saw him, he was never acknowledged. It was easier this way, you didn’t have to be reminded of your failed marriage and hurtful husband. This way, you could try lead a separate happy life within the confines of the manor.
After deciding to go into town today to have a look at the markets, something you last did when you were little, you donned a regular dress and left, choosing to go by foot. After scouring the little trinket shops your eyes landed on a brooch shaped like a raven, posing fierce and proud, and your thoughts drifted to him. Before you could stop yourself, you had purchased the accessory, slipping it into the safe pocket of your gown. It’s not like you would give it to him anyway.
You then decided to visit the produce markets, choosing to buy some fresh vegetables. When reaching for a bunch of carrots on a high shelf you swayed slightly bumping into someone harshly as you stopped yourself from falling over.
“I’m very sorry, I was just trying to get those carrots when I lost my balance,” you rubbed your neck sheepishly curtseying to the stranger.
The man laughed richly, blond hair bouncing in the slight breeze, his green eyes filled with mirth as he assured you he was fine before grabbing one bunch of carrots and handing them over.
“Thank you very much! Your kindness has brightened my day,” you told him sincerely.
“It’s my duty to look after helpless maidens such as yourself.”
“Do you flirt with all of the girls you assist?”
“Only the gorgeous ones.”
You had to look away to prevent him from observing your flustered state, opting to emerge yourself in the world of lentils as you examined the stall.
“I must tell you; I am a married woman,” you murmured as you picked up the vegetable for examination.
“Well, where is the lucky man?”
“He is busy with work; I have come by myself today.”
“He should know better than to let you roam around alone, someone might sweep you away.”
You laughed silently, as if that stubborn man would care.
“I’ll be sure to pass that on,” you assured him.
A small spit of water landed on your face as you looked up at the sky, grey clouds everywhere with the promise of a nasty storm. The temperamental weather had looked so promising earlier with the sun’s dazzling warmth.
“I need to go now, but thank you again for your kindness.”
He grabbed the back of your hand, placing a lingering kiss there before saying, “I hope we can meet again.”
The walk back to Kageyama manor would be a long one, and with the way it was raining, you knew getting ill was inevitable. After every minute of the journey you could feel the world get colder. The rain grew heavier, soaking your thin clothes and blended in with the tears streaming down your face. As you cursed yourself for not taking the carriage, for being so trusting in the weather, you cried softly as you walked. The Karasuno kingdom weather was nothing to jest about, the level of coldness could fall to detrimental temperatures.
You trooped on, knowing that you were alone, clutching the basket closer to your chest, you huddled onwards. The weather progressively getting worse as the journey continued and finally you saw the flickering lights in the distance. Kageyama Manor. Just a little longer to go.
You managed to put one step in front of the other until you reached the gate. The fatigue and coldness had beat you as you sank against the cold metal, shivering violently.
“Someone please, help me,” you managed to whisper.
Your eyes drooped shut as you slumped over, you could hear the echo of your name batter against the harsh winds, over and over again. Peaking your eyes open, a dark shadow fell over you, reaching out. You wanted to reach out too, to go with them but instead your eyes closed and you lost control of your limbs, head resting limply against the floor.
When you awoke in your chambers, you were engulfed in the zealous embrace of Himari.
“Don’t you ever scare us like that again!”
“I’m sorry,” you managed to get out, muffled by her suffocating hug.
“If you ever want to go out again, you have to bring someone with you and for heaven’s sake, take the carriage,” she continued with her lecture, stroking your hair gently.
“How did you even find me?”
“Well, we were worried when you were late for dinner, it had gotten really late and the weather was horrendous, I remembered you went by foot. When Lord Kageyama had heard, he was furious, went out searching for you immediately and he managed to find you outside the gates, limp like a noodle!”
“Lord Kageyama found me?” you whispered.
“Carried you in, changed you into some warm, dry clothes and fed you.”
“He did all of that for me?”
“Mhmm.”
“I must thank him,” you exclaimed, throwing your covers off and hobbling in chase of your saviour.
“But my lady –”
Before she could finish you were already out of the room.
When you finally found him in the lounge, he was surprised to see you. Looking up from the book he had been intently studying, it looked to be a sports book of some kind.
“Shouldn’t you be resting?” He asked sternly, setting the book down on his legs and turning his heavy gaze to you.
“I just wanted to say thank you,” you managed to get out between breaths.
“It was nothing.”
“It meant a lot to me,” you said with conviction, leaving no room for discussion.
“Well, I can’t have you dying on me now, can I?”
“Yeah, or who else will dance with you at social gatherings to maintain your image?”
“Y/n, about that I –”
The announcement of an arrival cut him off, their bellowing voice reaching all corners of the house as you retreated to the staircase to investigate the guests.
“Lord James Westbrooke of the Southern neighbouring kingdom has arrived.”
You peeked at the man who had entered your home, the familiarity of his mischievous eyes and blonde locks startled you as you rushed to him.
“It’s you!”
“And it is you fair maiden that my thoughts keep straying to.”
You rolled your eyes at his incessant flirting as you asked, “What are you doing here?”
“I’m here as a guest of the king, I’ve been visiting all different parts of the Karasuno Kingdom, and I have to say, it is beautiful here.”
“I have to agree with you, the beauty of Karasuno’s lakes and scenery are unmatched.”
“You should visit my kingdom sometime in the future, I can show you striking scenes there too, although they don’t quite live up to Karasuno’s standards they are still quite bedazzling,” he slyly offered.
“I would love to –”
“Lord Westbrooke, I am Lord Kageyama,” Out of nowhere your brooding husband butt in, one arm sneaking around your waist to pull you into his side - to your surprise - and the other reaching out in offering. James accepted, and they shook hands strenuously.
“May I inquire as to where you both met?”
You looked up at him, “We met the other day at the markets.”
“I see,” he said curtly, he’s always been blunt, but something in his tone makes him appear lethal.
“I’d love to go with you again Lady Y/n, while I’m here.”
“I’m afraid that Y/n is not allowed back there without me.”
“Don’t worry, you can tag along too,” Westbrooke replied, unfazed.
“Ah, I’m afraid I won’t be going back to the markets for some time,” you said gently, feeling Kageyama’s hold on you relax a touch, “However you could join me for a stroll in the garden at some point.”
You could feel Kageyama stiffen again.
“I would be delighted. It’s a date then.”
After cleaning the kitchen from any mess you made, you smiled happily at the sight of your delicious dinner. After switching off the lights and getting ready for bed, you heard a thump from Kageyama’s wing.
Stuck between the internal dilemma of checking on him or leaving him to his own devices, you chose the latter. Just as you’re about to step in the direction of your chambers, you heard the thump again. Cursing your good conscience, you headed over to investigate.
“Lord Kageyama?” You whispered, trying to navigate through the dimly lit halls. You finally reached a brighter room and as you peeked around – you saw him, sprawled out on the floor, limbs splayed as if he had fallen.
Rushing to his side you spluttered, “What happened? Are you okay? Are you hurt?”
He opened his eyes slowly at your onslaught of questions before reaching out and cupping your face, “You came,” he smiled.
It was only then that you noticed this was not the usual and stoic Kageyama that would rather get lost in an infinite maze than come close to you, he was drunk, the alcohol on his breath indication enough.
“Come on, get up,” you sighed trying to manoeuvre his body in a way that you could drag him to his room.
“Where are we going?”
“To your chambers.”
“No!” He vehemently protested, trying to escape your hold.
“What do you mean no?” You demanded, trying to re-establish your hold on him.
“I want to go with you.”
“I’m going to my bedchambers,” you tried to explain.
“Me too.”
There was no use arguing with him, stubborn sober and a stubborn drunk, there was no winning. Hauling him back the way you came, you dragged him through the quiet manor.
“You know you could at least help me here,” you grunted as he made his body a bit lighter.
You pulled him into your room and pushed him with great force onto the bed. He flopped between the large cushions before chucking them all off and sliding into the sheets. Then as if he remembered something, he turned to you.
“Coming?”
“In the same bed as you? No.”
He pouted adorably making your heart melt. Who knew such a scary man could be quite so cute?
“Okay, help me with my shirt?”
As you walked forward, he grabbed onto you and hauled you into the bed. The unexpected move had you squeaking in fright.
“Where was all that energy when I dragged you halfway across the house?” You demanded.
“Sshh.”
It was silent then, the only noise being the rustling of the trees in the grand garden. Thinking he had nodded off, you sighed quietly staring up at the ceiling, enjoying the feeling of his arms around you while it lasted.
“I really like you Y/n.”
This surprised you as you responded, “It really doesn’t feel like it sometimes.”
He pulled you closer at that, “S’ because I’m scared.”
“Of what?”
“If I allow myself to love you, will you hurt me like the others?”
Before you could question him further, he had fallen asleep.
When you awoke next morning, the sun appeared to shine brighter, the grass greener and the birds chirping more happily. You turned to Kageyama, who was still occupying your bed, observing his peaceful face as his light snores caused his nose to scrunch cutely.
Carefully slipping out of his grasp, you danced your way around the manor, happy to have made some progress with the grumpy Gruffalo.
You were in the kitchen, humming along to the song in your head, moving your hips in an unseemly manner when you heard a quiet clearing of a throat. Whirling around, embarrassed to be seen in such a careless state, you look wide eyed at the blonde intruder.
“Lord Westbrooke, what are you doing here?” You cleared your throat, trying to act like he hadn’t caught you doing something so embarrassing.
“I was told that you were most likely to be here.”
“And what business do you have with me?”
He pulled away from the doorway, stepping closer to you, face inches away from yours.
“Well, I was hoping we could take that garden stroll.”
You took a step back as he advanced a little closer, “I don’t think it would be wise to go on a walk without a chaperone, I am married.”
He gave a small smirk as he said, “I must confess my true intentions, I have fallen for your looks ever since I saw you in the markets that day and after the charming display you put on in the kitchen, well… I would like to see that sight every morning.”
“I don’t think I quite understand what you want from me.”
“I know you’re not happy with him, so be happy with me instead,” his sickly saccharine voice coaxed.
At that, a loud bang echoed through the room as Kageyama stood in the doorway, a deep scowl painted on his face. He slowly walked to the centre of the kitchen before eyeing you both, you took a few extra steps away from Lord Westbrooke, this time, he didn’t come closer.
“Am I interrupting anything?” He asked
“N-no, not at all, Lord Westbrooke was just leaving.”
“Oh, he was, was he? I’m sure he’s waiting for an answer,” Kageyama pressed.
“Well, I don’t-”
He cut you off, “Y/n, cut the flowery bullshit and give him an answer, now.”
“Look at the way he talks to you, Y/n, he could never make you happy,” Westbrook smirked, pressing the salt into the wound.
Kageyama clenched his fist, tightly before it loosened, “Do whatever you want, I don’t care, you’re already the laughing stock of the town Y/n, be my guest and have a foolish affair with this animal.”
His words punched you in the gut, the way he saw you, through his eyes was unbearable. He saw you as an embarrassment, as someone with loose enough morals that they would be unfaithful. The slate of progress between you, wiped clean and you weren’t sure if you wanted to try again, somehow it always ended up with you getting hurt.
Walking out of the room without so much as a word, you left the two men in the kitchen before retreating to your chambers to soothe your pounding headache, whilst trying not to waste your tears on a man that didn’t deserve them.
Kageyama felt terrible. A constant weight bared on his stature as he went about his daily business. After kicking out Lord Westbrooke for the sake of his sanity, he sat in his chambers trying to think of a way to amend what he had done. He knew it was confusing for you, acting nice one minute and cold the next, it was something he needed to fix immediately if he wanted you to stay. He thought and thought about what he could do to make it up to you, biting on the end of his finger.
Civil conversation was long forgotten as you slowly reverted back into your cold ways of ignoring Kageyama and pretending he didn’t exist. However, there was a limit to how much a person could take. You had come up with a plan and your mind was made up, set in a steely resolve.
“Kageyama,” you called out, sure he could hear you from his place in the lounge.
He came to your call like an obedient puppy and sat on a seat opposing you, nervously shifting his legs. Before he could begin to say anything you announced your plan.
“I’m leaving.”
Not expecting this, he was taken aback.
“What? I –”
“I can’t do this anymore, I don’t feel happy and I don’t want to live like this.”
“Whatever you need to be happy I’ll give it to you, money, clothes?” He scavenged, desperate to fix the cause of your sadness.
You scoffed, “What I need you can’t give me. I need love, I need to live a fulfilling life.”
“Please, don’t leave me,” his voice was uncharacteristically quiet.
“I don’t understand you, you act like you despise me and then won’t let me go when I try to leave? Why did you choose to marry me?”
There was a small pause as he sat back against the seat, sighing, “I like you a lot.”
Your face scrunched in confusion as you read his face for anything else.
“I was told I needed to marry and I chose you. We actually met years ago, you helped me with something and you were very kind about it. You changed my life, but I suppose you forgot about me.”
“I’m sorry I don’t remember. But then why do you treat me this way?”
He flinched, “I was scared. To love you more than you could ever love me and then have you leave, it would break me. I couldn’t risk it, but I fell for you anyway.”
“Does this have something to do with your first wife?” You probed, trying to understand him.
His silence was loud, telling you what you needed to know. Your foolish heart ached as you uprooted next to him, holding his hands in yours as a means of comfort.
“We were foolishly in love, rushing everything. Then, she left me for another man. Told me it was my fault, that I should’ve been better and she would’ve stayed.”
“You know that’s not true right? When you’re nice to me, I feel like I’m on top of the world,” you admitted shyly, “You’re such an amazing man and anyone would be lucky to have you.”
“She was my first, but I want you to be my last.”
“I’ll try again for you, but this time we’re playing by my rules,” you warned.
He smiled down at you, “Will you marry me? Properly this time.”
“Oh and,” you looked at him from under your lashes, “Where did Westbrooke go?”
Unfazed, Kageyama just shrugged, “Said he had urgent business to attend to. Your means of escape has gone.”
Surprised at his teasing, you replied back, “As if I’d leave with him when I have you, that’s like trading gold for a pebble.”
You didn’t miss the way he tried to hide his flushed face.
Your heart was beating with the force of a thousand tiny fans, foot tapping against the marble floor impatiently. You clutched the bouquet of a dozen fresh roses to your chest. The grand doors opened, revealing you to the audience. The smile on your face was unmovable as soon as you saw him waiting for you at the other end.
Kageyama stood to his full height, as you joined him. As you stared into his eyes, a sense of fulfilment blossomed in your body. The way he looked at you, made you feel like the most important person in his world. Excitement bubbled up inside you at the idea of starting this new adventure hand in hand with this man you loved.
“I do,” he proclaimed, as you slid the expensive band down his finger and kissed it after.
The famous words, “You may now kiss the bride,” rang out as Kageyama wasted no time. He tugged you in by the waist, dipping you slowly. Your leg lifted from the position as he pulled you into a passionate kiss.
Pulling back, your foreheads rested against each other, soaking in the moment and stamping it into your memory. Looking up at your husband, your partner, you dragged him outside, breaking into a run.
“Where are we going?” Kageyama asked breathless, memorising the sounds of your chuckles that melted into the wind. Your dress tail trailed after you, slightly dirty from the ground.
“Wherever we want,” you told him.
“Then, lead the way.”

dance of fate:
Tumblr media
summary: you were tasked to assassinate prince kageyama tobio, the prince of the prosperous, yet corrupt, kingdom of karasuno at the royal ball they hosted. however, it seemed that killing the prince would be difficult when those beautiful blue eyes of his met your own.
pairing: kageyama tobio x g!n reader
word count: 1.4k
genres + themes: fluff, very minor angst, royal!au, enemies to lovers?
warning: intentional lowercase!, mentions of daggers/assassination, prince kags being...princely ;)
a/n: okay everyone, i wrote this at 2AM two days ago and absolutely despise it (i didn't even proofread this), but with encouragement from my lovely moots, is posting this for your consumption :> i am so sorry for the blatant mischaracterization of kags here, and hope that maybe you can live your fun royal fantasies in this little...fic?
Tumblr media
amongst the chatter of the royalty, you secretly snuck into the posh ballroom, a dagger hidden stealthily in the satchel you kept expertly at your side. in the fair kingdom of karasuno, the monarchs were the type who garnered respect through their minuscule gestures of kindness and the subtle smiles they threw those of minor classes, hoping desperately to garner the public’s support. it was charming the way the council disguised their true intentions, their calculated smiles and public appearances merely masking the truth at hand.
prince kageyama tobio was a menace. effective yet ruthless, every rule he penned was one that placed yet again, a tighter noose on those with a lower status. all it did was benefit those with enough gold to feed themselves day in and out without a day in the fields.
gold and the promise of feeding your family was what brought you to the ballroom tonight.
everywhere you turned, the lavish masks of the aristocracy provided a sense of mystery, and the delectable collection of food at every table made your jaw drop.
money that the monarchy could be using for the betterment of the kingdom was being used for this?
you adjusted your clothes, attempting desperately to blend in with the crowd, when a set of azure eyes met yours, a cold—albeit curious gaze meeting yours.
instinctively, your hand migrated to where your dagger hid as the man walked over to you, his steps broad and regal as he finally stood before you.
“is this your first time amongst this crowd?” he asked, voice deep and smooth amongst the loud chatter of the duchesses who eyed him. “you do not seem to possess an air of royalty…or elegance, which is a common trait of our guests.”
“good sir, my name on the guest list signifies that my presence is of importance.” you felt a slight edge of annoyance in how his posture refused to slouch and how he maintained an air of unshakable pride to him. “and who might you be to question this?”
“prince kageyama tobio.” he scowled, “you bring an air of something mysterious. i intend to acquaint myself with it.”
so this was your target. the cruel prince, the one who brought grief to everyone you knew and loved with just a simple word.
why was he so attractive? underneath the golden cast lights of the ballroom’s chandeliers, it accentuated his dark hair and tall frame to look like something straight out of a dream, the light shining across his cheekbones.
“my prince,” you bowed, internally seething at the position you were placed in. “i, your humble subject, requests to know why you grace me with your presence so suddenly.”
raising from your deep-set bow, you weren’t prepared for the way his cheeks flushed red behind the sheer gossamer of his mask, and how his eyes flitted over your face almost shyly.
“may i offer you my first dance?” he sputtered, all traces of the confident boy gone as you regarded him.
“it’d be my honor,” you nodded, hand moving cautiously to your satchel…and even closer to the dagger.
he gently brought your hands to his lips, carefully brushing the knuckles as his dark blue eyes met yours once again. the spark in the action was instantaneous, and you felt a trail of fire from where his lips brushed.
gentle guidance from him had you standing in the center of the vast ballroom as you gently placed your hands atop his shoulder and waist while he secured his on yours. it was a moment of quiet acknowledgment between you as the piano started it’s gentle melody, and his foot took the first step towards yours.
you matched his advances with a sidestep of your own until you were waltzing, a steady grip on his shoulder as he led the two of you around the room like it was his personal garden. his eyes were trained on yours the entire time, and a faint smile was visible on your lips when you had almost stepped on his foot.
“the policies,” you began, enjoying the feeling of his gentle twirl of you, “they’re very harsh on the peasants.”
“how so?” he asked, face setting into something expressionless. “they’re beneficial. how can it be straining?”
“the peasants are the ones who grow the crops, your majesty,” you explained, your grip on his shoulder tightening marginally. “due to all the lavish parties that your council so adamantly demands on hosting, they have nothing to eat.”
at your words, something cracked in the hard facade he held, his retorts falling silent against your nod of assurance.
“it shall be immediately worked upon.” he whispered, leaning slightly closer to you. “i hadn’t a clue of the situation. it had been shielded from me. the council shall pay for this.”
“no need!” you refused, pacing your steps to the increasing tempo of the violin. “the council shall experience with their own eyes the grief they caused. that should suffice.”
prince kageyama nodded approvingly at this statement as he dipped you at the falling notes of the song, your satchel falling and exposing the dagger as he gazed into your eyes.
betrayal. it was the sinking feeling of regret that pooled in your gut at his gaze, that told you that you had to run.
“you lied.” he scowled, all softness gone from his face.
“i was never going to do it.” you argued, panic rushing through your veins. “your majesty, i—“
“i don’t want to hear it.” he choked out. “guards! arrest them!”
you immediately sprinted to the window of the ballroom, slipping gracefully over the balcony and sliding down the banister before heading out into the open arms of night.
they never found you. prince kageyama had them search, even after he had adjusted the laws. your family was finally fed, and although you didn’t have gold, you had at least secured their health.
you never expected to see him again.
it had been a simple stroll through what was dubbed “the crows' woods” on a quest for some exotic berries. it was merely a way for you to gain some solace from the endless expectations—and nightmares stemming from that fateful meeting in the ballroom that bothered you.
you had gone to pluck some berries when the tell-tale sounds of hooves beating on the dirt road of the woods met your ears. you turned around quickly, only to find the prince and his horse.
his galloping ceased when he saw you there, dark blue eyes taking in your whole figure and never averting his gaze as if you’d disappear if he looked away.
“you…” was all he managed to get out as he dismounted his horse. “i thought the guards would have captured you by now.”
a familiar sense of anxiety washed over you in waves as you hesitantly backed away, your back hitting a tree as kageyama continued to stroll towards you, cornering you.
you were close now, faces only mere inches apart as he placed an arm at your side to prevent your escape.
you were truly trapped.
“your majesty, i’ve been in plain sight.” you whispered, slightly surprised at the red that bloomed across his cheeks. “you did find me after all.”
“i changed the laws.” he mumbled. “you showed me what was wrong and i saw it. i fixed it. now tell me why you wanted to kill me.”
“it was for gold,” you admitted, heart speeding up at the way his gaze was pinned on yours. “my family and i are humble farmers. we were out of food and out of money. i had no options.”
“gold is the least of your priorities now.” he said, tone holding a fierce conviction. “you are the perfect candidate to be my royal consort. the council will cease to exist if you are the one at my side.”
you felt your face heat up at the proclamation, your heart stuttering out of time. “your majesty, are you implying…?”
“do me the honor of marrying me.” he added, his face serious. “i’ve been dreaming to have you. it’d be an honor to rule at your side.”
“then rule with you i shall,” you exhaled, only for your lips to be captured by his in a slow, yet passionate kiss. it was his declaration to you, of how many nights he spent, wondering if you were alright in his vast kingdom. he memorized your name and the way it felt rolling off his tongue. the kiss encompassed all he wanted from you and more.
when you finally pulled apart, kageyama’s smile was the brightest source of light. “don’t try to kill me again, alright?”
“of course my prince,” you giggled, “i would never dream of it.”

“The Head that Wears the Crown” (AO3)
Tooru watched the sun sink low in the sky, hovering just above the mountaintops far in the distance, its beams dancing through the branches and embracing the world in a farewell hug. He believed he would sit and watch it for hours if he could, and when he saw Iwaizumi kick a rock into the stream from beside him, he knew it was true.
“This is my favorite place to come, when I’m not working,” he heard to his left. Neither of them looked away from the sight before them.
“It’s beautiful,” Oikawa said honestly. Normally he would have said more, but really, there wasn’t more to say.
“Yeah,” Iwaizumi agreed, “I don’t get to get out here a lot, but I always thought so.” A pause. “There’s something kinda special about it tonight though.”
Tooru’s body stilled, but his heart sputtered into overdrive. He wasn’t sure why he felt nervous, though he was beginning to have a sneaking suspicion that he wasn’t nearly ready to acknowledge.
“Oh?” he tried to say casually, risking a glance over to the side. Iwaizumi was totally transfixed on the view, eyes wide and wondering.
“Mhm,” he hummed in affirmation and shot his own glance back toward Tooru. “I’ve never seen it like this before.”
Oikawa blushed furiously and only hoped it would be hidden by the rosiness of the setting sun. He giggled to himself and uttered a teasing, “Must be pulling out all the stops because there’s a royal here. Who’d want to show off for grumpy old Iwa-chan?”
“Don’t make me regret bringing you,” he replied, but there was no bite to his words. He wore a lazy smile on his lips, and Tooru thought it might be the most relaxed he had ever seen Iwaizumi. The idea made him suddenly sad, and he frowned and began fidgeting with his belt.
“I’m sorry you don’t get to come here more often,” Tooru started softly. “I can’t help but think that’s mostly my fault.”
Iwaizumi pursed his lips and gave a few thoughtful nods. “Yeah, it definitely is.”
Tooru huffed, guilt weighing heavily on his shoulders, but Iwaizumi just chuckled. “I don’t like being inside all the time. It’s stifling. But the job hasn’t been so bad the past few months, so I’ll forgive you.”
The prince perked at that, understanding the deeper meaning behind Iwaizumi’s words. He didn’t mind working in the palace now that he and Oikawa were friends-- ever since that fateful day with the tea. Oikawa thought back to it fondly, reliving the moment when the two had taken the first steps toward friendship. But he was soon frowning again when he remembered another intricacy of that day.
“You don’t want to be a servant.” Iwaizumi just looked at him like he was an idiot, as though that statement was the most obvious thing in the world. Tooru supposed it made sense—after all, he could never imagine wishing to be a servant—but it saddened him to think that Iwaizumi was unhappy where he was. “You said you wanted to be a soldier.”
Oikawa thought he might have seen the beginnings of a blush dust across Iwaizumi’s cheeks at that.
“I just… I think they’re really cool.” His voice turned up to a higher pitch than Tooru had ever heard from him. He was definitely blushing now. Tooru would have teased him about it, but he wanted the boy to say more. So he refrained from making a comment, careful to file it away for good teasing material later. Iwaizumi cleared his throat and continued speaking, his voice purposefully gruffer this time. “I polish their armor sometimes, or bring them weapons, or I bring meals to the trainees, and… they’re so funny, and nice, and honorable, and strong. But I know it isn’t really possible for.. well…”
He stopped and shot Tooru an almost fearful look.
“Someone like me,” he finished. He wouldn’t look at him anymore, and he kicked another rock into the stream with a satisfying plop.
The prince thought for a moment. He understood Hajime’s hesitation, and his pessimism. The laws of their nation didn’t allow for much social mobility, so whichever class one was born into was likely to be the one they died in. Marriage was just about the only thing that had the potential to raise your station, and even then, marrying outside one’s class was rare. The traditions of their kingdom were old, and their boundaries fairly rigid.
“A few months ago, would you have thought this was possible?” he ventured. Iwaizumi looked over in confusion, so Tooru continued. “This. Us. You and me standing here talking, like friends… like equals.” It hurt him to say that, to remind them both that once upon a time they weren’t. To imply that that was still the case. But he figured the language was necessary to get his point across.
He knew the boy hadn’t taken it the wrong way because he just quietly shook his head. “No,” he said honestly. He opened his mouth to say something else but seemed to think better of it. Tooru wondered for a few moments about the words he had swallowed.
“Well then you never know what’s possible.”

Random fantasy-royalty AU I thought of with close to no plot and little bits and pieces I just came up with:
- Kageyama, rather unexpectedly, is a Prince
- Tsukishima is the second prince
- Hinata is training to be a knight but lives with his family in the town
- Kageyama sneaks out of the palace and meets Hinata in town, accidentally and they get off to a famously bad start
- At this point of time, Kageyama is a prideful, self-centred prince who honestly only sneaked out of the palace because he was sick and tired of Tsukki and no longer wanted to see him
- Anyway, they bicker and argue and it somehow leads to a sword fight between the two
- Kageyama wins
- Just like in the original, there’s the whole “what have you been doing for the past three years?” Scene, as well as this scene where Hinata is losing but does this super quick attack where he quickly escapes Kageyama’s hold and picks up his sword after Kageyama had disarmed him and managed to attack him, then there’s also the thing where Hinata vows to defeat Kageyama one day
- But Kageyama does something and as a punishment, is sent on temporary banishment, essentially where he’s sent out on a diplomatic mission to accompany Sugawara and Daichi, Suga who is a diplomat and Daichi who is Suga’s bodyguard and also the person sent to keep him in line. This is for him to learn stuff from the two of them
- Tsukishima is also sent there as well, largely against his will
- Hinata was also brought along at Daichi’s request and assigned to chaperone Kageyama at all times
- That introduction goes as well as you can imagine (“you’re leaving me with a babysitter?!” “He’s... a bodyguard” “he can’t even defeat me!” “Fine he’s a babysitter, but you need it”)
- I’m going to go straight to the point and say that they eventually grow to get used to each other and they frequently wander around town of that other nation, there’s a ball scene and Hinata eventually gets Kageyama to be an essentially better person, yeah that roughly sums it up
- Then there’s Tsukki who meets Yamaguchi, a magician apprentice trying to figure out what type of magic he should specialise in
- Yams’s an apprentice under the official court mage (Shimada)
- To explain more of the “figure out which type of magic to specialise in”, every mage has a speciality and they find it relatively young. Most mages do and in here, magic is innate
- Yams’s magic appeared pretty late as compared to most other mages. His magic also flickered between what it could do and rather quickly and unreliably too. Most other mages’ magic worked best with a certain type of magic, like they just naturally better and more at ease with that type of magic and that ended up being their speciality. Yams didn’t have that
- But he wanted to help people with his magic (he tried. It didn’t exactly work very well and most instances of him “helping” ended up in more chaos)
- Shimada was called in to deal with a particularly disastrous result of Yams trying to help someone else with his magic which resulted in a large portion of this small town being overrun with mushrooms. Yams repeatedly apologised for causing so much trouble and sorta explained what happened, more apologising and Shimada well, reverses the damage.
- Yams sees it and starts to look up to him, wanting to do what he does. After a while, he decides to try writing in to Shimada asking if he could possibly teach him a bit of magic (I was originally going to write that Shimada offered to take him up as an apprentice but decided against it)
- Shimada remembers him and remembered how earnest he was and asks him to the palace and it sorta becomes an apprentice thing though Yams sometimes feels bad for “taking up the apprentice slot” since he’s only allowed to have one apprentice at one time but it works as more fuel to work even harder and prove himself “worthy”. He’s gained a better control over his magic under Shimada’s guidance though as usual, he’s incredibly hard working
- And as for how Tsukki meets Yams, well, Yams accidentally crashes into Tsukki and dumps wax and oil all over him (from candles) Tsukki acts incredibly Tsukki like with that face and Yams apologises a lot and lowkey pulls a Yachi with his overthinking and worrying that he’s going to be executed for dumping wax and oil on the prince of a kingdom they were settling diplomatic matters with
- Tsukki looks him up and down and asks “you’re a mage, aren’t you? Can’t you get rid of (gestures to his whole body)” cue yams freaking out and trying to tell him that he’d rather not be charged with accidental murder of a prince. And a somewhat explanation saying how bad he is with controlling his magic and how it can get out of hand. “I can tell, there are sparks on your hands” “ugh, screw me, just, stay here, or don’t, I’ll find you either way, take off your shirt, I will be back with some fresh clothes... or something. Just, stay here please. I am so so sorry!” And he runs off
- Tsukki ends up staying there. Yams rushes back and ends up herding Tsukki back to his room where he’s set up a warm bath and some fresh clothes and there’s more apologising. Then Yams runs off again once Tsukki’s in his room. I’m going somewhere with this, trust me
- Yams returns after a while with a slice of strawberry shortcake (side note, I love strawberry shortcakes too, ...great, I just made myself hungry) as an apology and Yams says that Hinata told him that he likes strawberry shortcakes and they end up talking a bit and sort of end up forming a sort of friendship and they start talking a bit more almost daily after they bump into each other at the library
- Tsukki sees how hardworking and how dedicated Yams is and slowly starts falling. Yams gets to know more about Tsukki and also starts falling. It’s... a little complicated, mutual pining, denial, all that stuff
That’s honestly all I’ve got so far and this has been sitting in my drafts for a bit and I am now way too emotionally invested in this AU too and I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t be all that surprising if this pops up again too so yup
