Six of Wands (Alternate): Author!King
Upright: Success, recognition, rewards, acclaim, praise, pride, victory, progress, confidence
Reversed: Lack of recognition/rewards/achievement, egotism, fall from grace, failure, self-doubt, pressure to succeed
Unlike the two versions of the Lovers which represented different aspects of the card, this alternate Six of Wands represents a similar situation to the original design—a bit less impactful to the overarching plot, but it was too fun of an idea not to make it!
This one's fairly self-explanatory: King and Luz collaborate on a book for a writing contest, but she quits the project when he disregards all her romance and fantasy elements in favor of his own (more violence-oriented) ideas. He gets all the fame and acclaim to himself when he publishes it, Luz receiving no recognition for her contributions. He lets the praise go to his head, and when he fails to write an equally successful sequel, realizes Ruler's Reach was only good because they wrote it together. They get trapped together in "literal crunch time" by King's publisher, where King apologizes to Luz and escapes his contract with her help (and Tiny Nose's, of course).
Deck Order:
< Previous: Six of Wands (Original) | Next: Seven of Wands >
Show Chronology:
< Previous: The Empress | Next: Knight of Wands >

I can't stop thinking about those lines in Sense and Insensitivity where King and Luz are talking about Luzura and a prince having a romantic moment during the final confrontation with Ruler.
King: "Luzura's tears fell on the frozen prince bringing him back to life? It just feels a little unrealistic."
Luz: "I see what you're saying, but in your version Ruler just destroys everything. I think a little romantic tension could help the scene."
I doubt Hunter is going to die again, because not only would that completely undercut Flapjack's death - Luz has a death flag. There's foreshadowing in Thanks to Them when Hunter and Luz leave the basement.
Tumblr media
So I think an inversion of that scene is going to happen - where the prince does something to bring Luzura back to life. Probably through some kind of power only Grimwalkers have.
Because I always thought it was really weird that Belos put a seal on Hunter. It's unclear whether or not he branded him as some kind of "test of loyalty" OR if he was sealing whatever power Hunter has so it'd be easier to kill him if he decides to betray him.
We still don't know what a Grimwalker is capable of. But Hunter would have a good idea of what he might be capable of because we can see he has three books about Grimwalkers in Labyrinth Runners.
Tumblr media
It's really hard to make out but the titles on the books are "Grimwalker Extinction"," (x) Walkers" and "Legends of Grimwalkers".
So this has me thinking that before the Final Confrontation happens, Luz and company are going to find a way to lift the brand mark. During the Final Confrontation, Luz gets stabbed, possibly dies [or near death] and Hunter brings her back to life through some kind of Grimwalker power.

Today I did a little TOH binge and ended up on s1e11, Sense and Insensitivity. At the end of the episode, Tiny Nose distracts Piniet with her book that has him crying by the end. He calls King old news, and BEGS Tiny Nose to allow him to publish her book.
Tiny Nose is voiced by Dana Terrace (creator of The Owl House, for the uninitiated) and is basically her self insert (see this great post by user @clownsnake for the comparison). King is voiced by Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls, another GREAT Disney show about supernatural weirdness that Dana actually worked on as well (read here an article by CBR linking the two shows’ universes!).
Alex only intended for Gravity Falls to run for 2 seasons, but The Owl House has made repeated jokes at Disney’s expense about TOH being cancelled before it really had the chance to delve into backstories (we never did get explicit confirmation regarding Caleb, his story, and Flapjack’s involvement in it all).
I’m not saying that Sense and Insensitivity is a another metaphor for how Disney has been cancelling the FANTASTIC serials it picks up because they no longer “fit the brand”…but that’s exactly what I’m saying.

Top 5 TOH episodes?
5. Understanding Willow.
I love love loved the whole concept of the way memories and the mind works in the TOH universe. Was cool to see Amity and Willow’s past with each other, and have them start to clear that up. I really like how they let Willow set boundaries as well, that it wasn’t just okay everything’s fixed now, and that’s it okay to want to be friends again but still take the time to build that trust.
4. Hollow Mind.
What can I say? I wasnt joking when I said I liked how the mind worked in this show. Plus lots of backstory and plenty is revealed here. Luz finds out the truth about Belos/Philip, we learn about the golden guards, we start to see how the day of unity is gonna work, and we see the collector and what his business with Belos is. Also the scene where the first tried out the coven marks? Rare cartoon moment that actually makes me feel disturbed.
3. Agony of a Witch.
I remember being SO shocked by Lilith’s reveal, and then thinking “duh OF COURSE it was her”. I mean damn, her name means night monster she was literally the monster that cursed Eda in the night. And honestly I love it when reveals are like that? Like, just being able to go back and see the hints that led to it. Also Eda and Liliths fight?? Fucking amazing. Beautiful animation and It very much highlights just how insanely powerful Eda is, and also just how much she has come to care for Luz over the course of the whole season.
2. Keeping Up A-fear-ances.
I! Love! Clawthornes! I loved Gwen’s intro, and how they worked through her relationship with both of her daughters. It certainly explained a lot about why Eda and Lilith are the way that they are. I also just really liked seeing how Eda really appreciated having Lilith around. There’s something that’s a bit refreshing to me in the way the show handled their relationship after Lilith left the coven and stayed with Eda? Its very clear Lilith feels guilty but also that Eda loves and cares for her sister and they just want to be back in each others lives, and that can be a thing without Eda ever having to actually say she forgives Lilith. Also was very excited to see the raven beast happen, and wish we could see it again but I doubt it will. Also night market ice cream bit was fucking funny.
1. Eda’s Requiem. Immediate first episode I thought of as soon as I saw this question. It’s a really beautiful episode imo. We get a first look at an actual rebellion group. Raine is introduced!! (As well as darius and eber, letting us a start to get a glimpse into the coven heads) we get to learn about Raine and Eda’s relationship and see that these two are clearly still so in love with each other, and how Raine doesn’t know these kids in that photo with Eda, but they will be damned if they let Eda remove herself from their lives, willing to let themself get captured for Eda’s safety. We also get to see some of the horror behind the coven marks, which was cool and made for a good cliffhanger. Also the duet?? So beautiful, gorgeous animation, and makes me cry almost every time. Also, King CLAWTHORNE. The whole episode put into perspective how much Eda grew into her role as a mother, and that was just the perfect way to confirm it and reassure her.

rewatching TOH pt2: I’ve seen some arguments about how the final season bent back over to coddle Luz and how it felt like she had everything to gain and nothing to lose, and the counterarguments that “not every end needs to be doom and gloom to be good.” I mean, I get where the latter is coming from; there’s too much media out there obsessed with angst because oooh realism but I still find myself siding with the first opinion, because the show makes a point of calling out the Chosen One trope, and there was a significant amount of screentime dedicated to Luz stressing about having to choose between Earth (real world) and Boiling Isles (fantasy land) only for her to get both anyway, and become the chosen one. It feels like the Luz we started the show with is the same Luz with whom we ended the show. And like, having to lose/sacrifice something doesn’t necessarily make the ending sad yk? Maybe bittersweet but not necessarily bad.
What really cemented this for me was s1ep11/Sense and Insensitivity, where Luz mentions that she was aware that becoming a witch on Earth was impossible, so her runner up dream was to become a writer and I wish that was how the series ended---Luz choosing to stay with her mom before the gateway between both worlds is destroyed, thus choosing the real world with all its dread and dullness, but realizes that doesn’t mean she has to become dull too. Instead she channels her creativity and love for magic through writing and shares the stories of the heroes of the Boiling Isles. In a way she does get both real life and fantasy but it feels like she actually grew up. And she herself says in s2ep13/Any Sport in a Storm (after finding out Azura’s writer was human after all): “Some times it’s nice to be reminded that you don’t need to be a powerful ancient witch to make something special.”
I’m gonna get a bit fanfic-y here but I like to imagine her on her first book signing/reading/whatever in the epilogue. In the first page she dedicates the book to her father, with whom she found her love for magic and books, to her mother, the kindest and most patient mom anyone could ask for, and finally to the Owl Lady and her magical friends who helped find her real ambition and grow into the person she has become today. A bright-eyed child asks if the Owl Lady, Amity, and King are really real, which Luz answers vaguely, with a distant but affectionate gaze.
Move on to the Boiling Isles and everything they need to show us about how it changed including the reformed schools of magic, and end with Amity walking by the beach where she discovers what resembles the human trash Eda used to collect (and maybe Tibbles picking through it to find his next scam). Among these is a book, its cover art a dramatic witch duel between somewhat familiar face, and it reminds her of all these years ago when she first found the Azura series. Unlike that series, however, this book is signed by a name she knows very well.
Boom happy where everyone finds their place in life and is doing what they love and even though it’s sad that they separated you still have an open ending that gives hope for the gang finding each other again.
Idk I just think it’s a shame ep11 is the only episode where we see Luz’s passion towards writing fantasy (rather than just reading or dreaming about it), besides maybe teasing starting a writing club with Amity in s2e13. If not to foreshadow where her future was headed, the whole episode was kinda pointless since the episode right before this one where King manipulates a half-transformed Eda could’ve already served the purpose of bringing to light King’s tendency to step over others for his Demon King fantasies (but he gets away with it scot-free because Eda conveniently turns a blind eye every time Luz or King do her dirty lmao) so why do we need 2 of those in a row? Tbh there’s too many King-focused eps towards the second half of the show when I’d rather there was more time dedicated to seeing Luz actually learning magic. Why’s there 3 episodes between the episode where she gets signed up for school and the one where she actually has her first day? So much for a magical girl show.

1, 2 and 3 for toh asks :)
From this ask game
1. Favorite episode of season 1?
It may not be very plot heavy, but I always liked rewatching Sense and Insensitivity, because I liked seeing Luz take charge of a project like that, especially with writing. I kinda connected with her there.
2. Favorite episode of season 2?
It’s a tie between Separate Tides and Them’s the Breaks Kid. One set up the foundation for an amazing season, reintroducing the cast wonderfully. The other is just lighthearted and a nice break compared to the rest of the season.
3. Favorite episode of season 3?
Watching and Dreaming, no questions asked. I don’t think I need to explain this one.
