Tolkien Fandom Event Calendar

Recently I’ve received some asks about events/weeks in the Tolkien fandom, so I thought I’d compile a list of those that I know about. This is not exhaustive, and dates are subject to change by the organizers of these events!

Other blogs you can check out are @tolkieneventsblog and @tolkienfandomevents, though I’m not sure how active those are. The @silmarillionwritersguild Discord also has a channel dedicated to signal boosts for all sorts of Tolkien-related & general fandom happenings, which is another excellent way to keep up with fandom goings-on.

Acid on the Horizon [Voltron, Keith/Lance & Shiro/Allura, 2017, 29,975 words, rated M]

With Shiro gone and only Keith left, the Jaeger Gridelin Leo needs a new co-pilot. Enter Lance, a cadet Marshal Allura has seen potential in. And far away, on the horizon, something stirs.

The first multichapter fanfic I finished. Pacific Rim Au. I was super proud of myself for finishing this one, and I still think it's pretty good even if it's, you know.. fucking Voltron.

2. Kick the Beam [Dragon Age, Fenris/Garrett Hawke, 2013, 7,823 words, rated M]

Leandra wants Hawke to get married. Hawke, however, is head over heels for a belligerent, broody elf. You can see where this is going.

I remember this being super fun to write, especially Hawke's pov, he's just such a fun character. It's a little old but still a very fun little read.

3. Stitch by Stitch [DC Comics, Jason Todd/Roy Harper, 2019, 17,843 words, rated E]

Jason is injured and finds a safe harbour in Roy Harper. An old teenage crush comes bubbling to the surface, even through Jason's innumerable personal demons. There is also the complication of Roy's daughter Lian.

Still very happy with this one, getting to explore Jason before a tentative rapprochement with the Batfam was great. Fitting pre-52 Roy with Jason was a fascinating puzzle to figure out, and I adored writing Lian.

4. The Baffled King Composing [The Silmarillion, Maedhros/Fingon, 2021, 13,007 words, rated E]

Great deeds have rekindled the dormant flame of hope within Maedhros. With one Silmaril taken back, he is now certain that the Enemy is not invincible. His plan now is to unite all the peoples of Beleriand under a single banner, and together they will all be victorious against Morgoth. The Shadow will be lifted, and the Oath will be fulfilled. And then, finally, he and Fingon can rest easy again.

I am so grateful to the Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang for giving me the opportunity to partner up with the wonderful @nikosheba and make something amazing I'm still so proud of. It launched me back into writing properly.

5. Ever Decreasing Circles [Star Wars, Din Djarin/Luke Skywalker, 2022, 112,190 words, rated: E]

His newest (small, green) student has been completely inconsolable, and so Luke Skywalker decides to track down the Mandalorian Grogu calls father, however long it takes. Meanwhile, Din Djarin is coming to terms with the new, painful absence of the most important being in his life, and this damn Darksaber.

This one kept getting bigger and bigger as I was writing it. It's the longest fic I've ever written and I proved to myself I could do it. The urge to go back and edit some bits and pieces is strong (I'll get round to that when I print myself a physical copy) and the way I view Luke changed like halfway through, stupidly, but I'm still like... proud of myself for writing the Romantic Sewer fic and also starting a series which now sits at 176k+ words.

Rusty is a writer who has focused heavily in making content for the Supernatural fandom in recent years. You may know them from their original tumblr username “rambleoncas” or from his ao3, kettleknight. Rus takes an interest in several fandoms, namely ones in the genres of Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Historical Fiction, or the Preternatural. They have a BA in creative writing, with a focus in fiction and poetry. 

Some projects Rusty has contributed to are Sweetheart, This IS Gender Studies Zine (Supernatural) and The Supernatural Poetry Collection (SPN), among other works made for the Deancas Horror Fest, the Dean/Cas Big Bang and Reverse Bang, and fics made for various other events.

Fëanor in Formenos

My @tolkienrsb​ 2021 entry! I gave @edgeoflight​ (AO3) free reign to interpret it, and I look forward to reading the resulting story when it is revealed September 5. :)  I was trying to depict Fëanor giving a speech in a way reminiscent of religious imagery. I think it fits; he seems like an almost-mythological figure in the Silmarillion, for all that there are people still alive to have known him while much of the story takes place. In NoME we get the note about an invention attributed to him that really wasn’t his– and likewise I have a hard time believing his speeches were so convincing they did not need already existing ideas among the Noldor to build upon. He is both the figure of the ideal skillful Noldo and a spectre, a scapegoat. The story names him the greatest; but then his birth is affected by Marring. He is the only one in Valinor to lose his mother through his creation; he becomes possessive of his creations. His father is the first person murdered in Valinor; he is the first elf to instigate murder in Valinor. If he casts a long shadow over the story– it is named after his creations and shaped by his (bad) decisions even long after he runs into some Balrogs. It seemed fitting to paint him in high contrast. If the landscape seems unrealistic, that’s very much on purpose. This is Valinor during the time of the Trees; it should be vivid beyond any real landscapes. The jewel-tones are intentional.

Unfortunately my scanner didn’t agree to scan this, so now I’m late– and left with these phone pics. If the pillar on the right appears to bend inwards– that’s what you’re seeing. The detail pics show some of the gold and silver paint I used to depict the Treelight on the landscape and in Fëanor’s eyes (and some jewelry). The downside to metallic paint is that it shows much better irl than on pictures!

I painted him before a window with his heraldic crest. His gestures are inspired by both a note in NoME (left hand) and traditional orator’s hand gestures (right one). Click to read a bit on their possible meaning(s). 

‘a gesture of prohibition, commanding silence or halting or ceasing from any action; forbidding advance, ordering retreat or departure; rejection of a plea.’ …. Formenos was not the most trusting time for Fëanor.

His right hand is making an orator’s gesture for ‘perfection,’ according to one source; though according to Quintilian: “The fore finger of the right hand joining the middle of its nail to the extremity of its own thumb, and moderately extending the rest of the fingers, is graceful in approving.’ I originally intended for it to mean ‘perfection’ as referring to his own view of his creations, but who am I to argue with Quintillian? 

His greaves show a wave-like pattern because I couldn’t resist a little foreshadowing.

By Lady_Gavroche “Tell me, my friend...” But he had phrased the question unwisely, for Celebrimbor immediately interrupted him with: “My friend.” Narvi let out an aggravated groan that made the Elf laugh. He should have known better by now, but time and time again, over the summer, he had let his guard down. And Celebrimbor never seemed to let an occasion to make his joke escape him.

I cannot complement Lady_Gavroche enough. Reading her work is a joy and the way she tells this story has changed the way I understand the Doors of Durin forever. This fic is funny, tender, and so well thought out. Do yourself a favor and read for yourself!

I’ve been part of this year’s Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang once more, and this year’s collection will be revealed soon. I’ve had the pleasure of writing for one of my OTP’s and a most beautiful artwork (art slide #138) this year, and I’m very excited. Thank you once more for drawing this beautiful piece, Daedhelos. Nienna still remembers the first star. Even now it shines brightly up in the heavens. The light of that star and all its siblings has been a beacon of hope for Nienna and her brothers for ages upon ages. It is a light they can walk beneath and that guides them back to gentler thoughts.

So, with the Trees dead and a terrible Oath sworn, in the aftermath of a bloody battle on dark shores and a Doom that has fallen mostly on deaf ears, Nienna and the Feanturi walk under the ight of the stars as they always have. They discuss all the fears and insecurities they can share with no one but each other and the stars.

In the presence of her brothers and shrouded in a seemingly eternal night, Nienna remembers all the destruction of ages past, but also the light that came after. No matter what happens, one thing remains eternally true: that even in the darkness there is light. A brighter light will return, but only the gentle courage of the stars can guide them there.

My first piece (out of three) for the Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang 2021 (see@tolkienrsb) focuses on, surprise, the character of Thorin Oakenshield, a certain prophecy, and his fate as the heir of Erebor and Durin the Deathless. I've always wondered what would happen if Thorin lost his way after the horrors of Azanulbizar and left his kin to wander through Middle Earth...

Super excited to finally reveal my contribution for this year’s @tolkienrsb!

@foxleycrow and myself decided to take a look at Eöl’s story and Maeglin’s upbringing through the perspective of their own culture. Here I tried to depict one of the most significant moments in Maeglin’s life - his naming ceremony, a part of his coming of age rites.

Perhaps there are other parts of their story that did not make it into Noldorin chronicles?
