shiv having her husband in her contacts as FirstName LastName with no photo of him, so an incoming call from him would just look like a call from any other random contact...but then also having him set up as her Emergency Contact in her phone's Medical ID profile...shiv thesis.

the fact that shiv was forced to make a choice between men who all represent next generation logan roy in their own ways, who all denigrate and dismiss her and use her up and bleed her dry as they see fit, that the final shot of her is taking tom’s hand, precariously, as she cannot stomach the sight of him and looks away. she is never getting out from under the thumb of her abusive father. even as one of the most privileged women in the entire world, patriarchy is inescapable.

so this exchange in Chiantishire about the possible merger of equals with Gojo got me thinking bc it struck me as basically the thesis statement of Logan’s world. But looking in more detail at who says what here is craaazyy. Shiv’s total disbelief at the idea. And Logan’s confirmation of that: “No such thing.” There’s no such thing as two parties being in an equal partnership. And then Tom taking this idea further: “Always a top dog, right?” If equals do not exist, one must be dominant. And this in the same episode as Shiv says to Tom, “I'm way out of your fucking league. That's why you want me. That’s why you love me. Even though I don’t love you.” This in the episode before Tom betrays Shiv, tipping the scale of power in their marriage in his favour for the first time. And Logan’s here, sitting between them, the invisible third part of Shiv and Tom’s relationship because even when he’s not in the room he’s always in the room, he’s in Shiv’s head saying “no such thing”. Anyway

4.06 being the launch of disgusting brothers llc strongly (see this deleted scene) suggests that whatever tom and greg might have previously done (or not done, given the distinct lack of rummaging to fruition) as the disgusting brothers, it did not involve anything quite as explicit as what greg was lead to believe after tom talked up a big game post-italy. greg is the catalyst in escalating what he sees as the next stage in their partnership, so much so that he eagerly and secretly arranges an entire investor party to give them an opportunity to get off together - and he only wants to do it if tom is there with him. and yet tom is terrified by greg’s little surprise announcement and begs off the whole night because he’s too tired, it’s too much, think of the election, greg!
when greg says ‘i did this for you, man’ to tom it’s like… yeah. that’s the greg sexuality thesis statement right there. he developed an interest in sex at all, as a concept, after tom literally fucking awakened him to the idea by lavishing him with physical affection, choosing him over shiv, giving them a squad name, and going on and on about all the women they were going to fuck, which was of course tom’s proxy for wanting desperately to fuck greg.
but once tom seemingly can’t commit to this sexual exploration, even with women as a cover for what he feels for greg because of his own deep-seated hang ups around his sexuality, it turns into greg attempting to arrange for tom to fuck random women as a proxy for desperately wanting to fuck tom. neither of them can even say the word pussy to each other. this grand imagining greg has of tom somehow taking them both to titty town (help me !!!!) is indicative of his preferred mode of engagement with sex at all: via tom.
when it comes down to it, that same episode tom has the most disinterested, dispassionate sex with shiv at the tom and greg fuckfest, the fuckfest specifically for tom and greg, that greg has so diligently arranged for them, while greg is prevented from even attending. tom goes to titty town solo, and the very next day has a public mental breakdown at least part induced by the sex he has with shiv. greg, on the other hand, is tempted away by matsson, and over the next few episodes is quite strongly implied to have had some sexual contact with him (including by a jealous shiv), but again - greg was doing that shit for tom. like this is all too much to hold in my head so i’m going to stop there for now but i am completely floored by the whole exchange and the implications.

here’s my beef: i figured the siblings would never be able to do it, but previously every time they broke their alliance there was a pointed Reason behind it. and maybe i’m just dumb maybe i’m lacking comprehension here maybe shiv just couldn’t bear to give it away or maybe she didn’t want him to become logan i don’t know, i wish they had just given us Something some final thesis statement on why shiv couldn’t let it happen. this all felt so inevitable, even tom ultimately getting it felt inevitable and mattson’s reasons for picking him felt like an afterthought. idk it just didn’t feel nearly as explosive as any other season finale, and i know not every finale needs to be explosive but in a show that prides itself on the scope and spectacle of tragedy in this family, i wanted more. i feel like episode 3 will always be remembered before this finale and maybe that’s like poetic because it’s logan beating his children once again idk idk

I would have been shocked if shiv had him saved as something else, that's just not her. That's what she calls him also, not like she's calling him some nickname. The only person I can see her actually saving as something else, or with an emoji (like the little turd with eyes) is Roman. I don't know why, but that's how I see their relationship.
You're 100% right actually, I do think she'd save Roman with a turd emoji. I feel like the fact that she made her dad's contact photo Fidel Castro points to her being a little more playful with it in an insulting or tongue-in-cheek kind of way so that kind of tracks.
Just to be clear I do 100% agree that the contact thing is a Shiv Thesis Statement but I think some people were misinterpreting what the thesis actually is. I think it says a lot about how she expresses affection and what's meaningful to her, but I don't think it necessarily says a lot about how she feels about Tom specifically. (Also @ everyone who said 'Tom's definitely saved Shiv's name with emojis' he canonically has not. In 'Hunting' we see her text him and her name on the notification is just 'Shiv'. I'm gonna be honest I don't think any of these people are affectionate emoji people except for maybe Connor and Willa)

"should i listen to the things you say directly in my face when we're at our most intimate?" as not only a deeply depressing thesis statement on the tomshiv dynamic but also specifically a metatextual call for the audience to examine everything shiv has ever said to tom

might as well make this a post. tom talking about the first time they fucked felt a little weird and i agree. however. it was a very interesting reconstruction of his i live to serve statements to kendall and roman. he was obviously manipulative to shiv in a way i feel has been almost skirted around yet it still embodied his inability to function in the conversation of non-consent that everyone else thrives in. yet he creates his own version of that. watching him respecting her space physically by not touching her and backing away but still pressing the emotional issue?? tom wambsgans thesis scene
