There are two types of people: those who see following His laws as legalistic—hence you could be saved without works; and those who see His laws as a way to salvation. Both are wrong. As pastor Tom Buck wrote, “[Ephesians 2:9-10] squashes both lies. Our salvation is NOT of works, but we were re-created FOR good works.”

If we love Him, His laws will not be done out of compulsion, but rather joy. Good works flow from a person who's saved. As Christian evangelist James Dorman IV wrote: “When we tell someone about the necessity of repentance, we never rely upon them to muster up self-strength to do so. Instead, we faithfully tell them while relying solely upon Christ, our exalted prince & Savior, to grant it. He secures ‘results’. Not us.” The one who loves Christ will repent of their sins and follow His Word.

Obedience is already expected of those who follow Him (Luke 17:10). The real question is this: how is your heart handling the way to live a holy life? Does following Him, and letting go of what He calls sin, bring you joy, or do you resent Him for making you let go of your favorite sins?

We must remember that, as Charles Spurgeon said: “Grace is the mother and nurse of holiness, and not the apologist of sin.”

May we never resent His commandments for “His commandments are not burdensome.” We must never allow this world, and the allure of sin, to pull us away from our Lord Jesus Christ.

May we always joyfully follow Him and obey His commandments.
