Also a separate gripe from my main r6s gripe;

The insistence on including Assassin's Creed as part of every universe you have is just really sad. Like. I love and adore the AC franchise up until Unity, but there has to be a point where you stop resetting back to the Templar/Assassin conflict as some kind of mysterious overarching conspiracy in every plot line. And I say this as someone who's trying very hard to write their own novels and has read over a thousand fiction books.

It's a cheap narrative default and reflects unoriginality. It reflects that you are so fixated on the frankly very dead horse that you can't make anything else separate from it. If you can't create independent conflict without the same goddamn plot line in games that don't have any need for the AC conflict, then you really shouldn't write the game.

Including the Animus in the Nighthaven Labs map just IRKS me because there's a difference between an Easter egg/reference and a "Oh yeah this exists in the world". Flores' AC outfit? That's fine, it's a reference for the player. In game charms referencing the Creed? Again, references for the player. The fucking ANIMUS in a CANON MAP? Oh fucking hell you just made it canon.

More concerningly, I'm wondering if you're going to use it as a scapegoat for terrible writing. Like, with R6, are you going to pull Harry being an Assassin and Kali being a Templar or vice versa to explain away the reckless behavior on his part?

Please. I know you can write something that doesn't have AC alluded to as an overarching conflict because you wrote Child of Light, a wonderful piece of media that made me bawl on the floor. You haven't folded AC into The Division.

At least with Clancy's stuff. Just. Respect the man's work and put some damn effort forth to stay in line with what he established. He was a king of military thriller, I'm not expecting you to live up to what he wrote - but I want to be able to expect better, yk

Emmanuelle Pichon, codenamed Twitch, is an Attacking Operator featured in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege Pichon grew up in a family of academics in the historic city of  Nancy, France, where the children were encouraged to excel in Math,  Science, and Technology. Early participation in sponsored computer  programming competitions led to her joining the army cadets at sixteen.  Almost immediately her talent was recognized, particularly in robotics.  Her superiors quickly encouraged Pichon to study engineering while  continuing her career in the military with the GIGN.  From the start, Pichon's focus has been on adaptable technology that  aids soldiers in the field. While there is much praise for her  technological achievements, Pichon's tactical prowess and ability to  problem solve quickly and efficiently make her a crucial operational  asset.

In 2015, Pichon was led by Olivier "Lion" Flament on a mission to Nigeria to assist medical personnel fighting the Ebola epidemic. Tragedy ensued, and the decisions Flament made for safety reasons put him at odds with Pichon and Gustave "Doc" Kateb,  who blamed him for the death of several medical personnel on-site  including Kateb's colleague. Later that year, Pichon's unique  combination of talents made her well-suited to join Rainbow.

In 2016, Pichon met Taina "Caveira" Pereira and had some kind of relationship with her, but to what extent remains  currently unknown. While not deployed on missions, Pichon proved  invaluable for Rainbow's R&D Department. She assisted in the  improvement of the team's equipment and was noted to have helped Elena "Mira" Álvarez in the development of Morowa "Clash" Evans' CCE Shield in 2017. In early 2018, Pichon assisted Rainbow's new CBRN Threat Unit with a situation concerning a mysterious mist on the shores of Sussex.  During the operation, Pichon provided Olivier Flament with a new aerial  drone that allowed him to determine the source of the mist plume. In  2019, Pereira went AWOL in Bolivia in order to search for her brother. Pichon and Meghan "Valkyrie" Castellano subsequently collaborated with Ghost Recon to conduct Operation Archangel in order to recover Caveira which proved to be a success.

In June 2020, Pichon and Julien "Rook" Nizan were in Paris, France when two large fires emerged downtown. The GIGN  deployed the pair and several other officers to keep order from the  chaos caused by the fire. Having faced a similar situation during  training under The Program,  Pichon and Nizan suspected the fires had been started in order to  distract from a major bank heist across the city. They tracked and  confronted the robbers who started firing at them. Nizan was shot in the  head but was saved by his helmet. Pichon and Nizan then pursued the  robbers across Paris in a high-speed motorcycle chase and eventually  caught them.

In 2022, Pichon was placed on Rainbow's new humanitarian squad, Wolfguard, under the leadership of Gustave "Doc" Kateb. She and Gilles "Montagne" Touré later traveled to Belgium to recruit Ngoma "Sens" Mutombo into Rainbow. weeks later, Pichon and Doc acted as control for Operation Vector Glare. The pair directed Montagne, Sens, and Olivier "Lion" Flament to rescue of an architect who was being held hostage at a refinery by  local militia. It was believed that this architect held schematics that  would detail how Nighthaven was involved in Masayuki Yahata's assassination. "Why Smoke Would Be A Good Choice For Wolfguard"

Since the beginning of Year 7 for Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Siege, Team Rainbow has been split into smaller squads. These squads consist of Ghosteyes, Viperstrike, Redhammer, and most importantly for this essay Wolfguard, a humanitarian military unit. Five Rainbow operators left to join Nighthaven before the formation of these squads, including James “Smoke” Porter. While he is now with the PMC Nighthaven, I believe that if Smoke was still with Rainbow he would be a good fit for Wolfguard. His areas of expertise, along with his personality and psychological makeup would all make him a good choice for this team. Some may say that his gadget would make him more suited for a squad like Ghosteyes or Redhammer. However, I think he has what it takes to be on Wolfguard. Smoke’s specialty is chemistry, but based on his biography he has a large field of knowledge with a focus on biochemistry and toxicology. This would be beneficial for a team like Wolfguard whose focus is on medicine and humanitarian efforts. In the real world, when there are mass-casualty events that involve toxic chemicals and nerve agents, one of the main reasons that casualties tend to be high is that it can be difficult to figure out the agents that were used and then administer the proper treatment. Having someone whose expertise is in toxicology and biochemistry would round out the team in response to bioweapons and chemical threats, especially since groups such as the White Masks have been shown in-universe to utilize chemical weapons in attacks on civilian institutions (see Bartlett University). Wolfguard could benefit from an expert in toxicology, and Smoke would be a good candidate for this position. It is not just his skills, but also his personality that would make Smoke a good fit for Wolfguard. According to his biography and psychological profile, he excels in scientific fields and is able to handle tense situations. Some would consider him reckless, however if one were to look at the information that is provided with his elite skin (Sanguine Arsenic), this recklessness allows him to take risky actions for the benefit of others. The accompanying art for the elite skin shows him escaping a house fire after rescuing a child who was in the burning building. He takes calculated risks according to Harry’s psychological report, which can be beneficial during mass-casualty events where every moment counts. His innovative personality and breadth of knowledge would be beneficial for the variety of situations that Wolfguard faces, especially if they relate to his field of toxicology. Some may think that Smoke would not be a good fit because of his gadget. While the words “Geneva Convention Violations” are frequently brought up in relation to Smoke’s gas canisters, they did not disqualify him from being on Rainbow in the first place, so liberties must be taken in the Siege universe in regards to gas weapons. Also, the same argument does not seem to be applied as frequently to Frost, who is on Wolfguard. When it comes to gadgets, they are just not a very good argument about what is acceptable. There might be other arguments against Smoke being a good candidate for Wolfguard, but his gadget should not be taken as one of them. In conclusion, there are many reasons that Smoke would be a good fit for Wolfguard. His background in chemistry would be a good fit for helping during humanitarian military operations. While some may consider his personality to be a bad fit for Wolfguard, he does have what it takes to be a part of this squad. Also, when it comes to whether Smoke’s gadget would disqualify from Wolfguard, that doesn’t seem like a very sound argument. While it is unlikely that Smoke and the other Nighthaven operators would rejoin Rainbow, should that ever occur, I hope I have made it clear that Smoke would be a good fit for Wolfguard.

Blog post 6 - LGBTQ representation in games

History of representation

Over the history of video games, the LGBTQ representation within them has evolved over time, reflecting the societal changes. The 2000s were a turning point for representation with some choose-your-own-adventure style games allowing the romance option with the supporting characters regardless of gender. The Sims (2000) had this feature too with same sex relationships as an option, however there would still be a lack of LGBTQ characters within mainstream games until we would see a rise in them over the 2010s.

Games with representation

Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014) featured a character named Dorian who the player was able to pursue as a romantic option, provided they made choices that pleased him. His backstory described how he was forced to undergo an in-game form of conversion therapy, which didn’t work and only strengthened his resolve, something that some players may deeply resonate with. He will also only be with and marry a man, so if the player has a female character, they don’t have these options. Furthermore, Dorian is a gay man of colour, something rare, though we do see another example of this around a similar time in Steve Cortez from Mass Effect 3 (2012), who can also only be “romanced” by the male player character.

The Last of Us (2013) had Ellie, one of the protagonists alongside Joel who are both trying to survive their journey across a post-apocalyptic United States. While we don’t find out much about her personal life until the near the end, where she mentions a girl she loved, the expansion The Last of Us: Left Behind (2014) explores her past with said girl more deeply. Then in The Last of Us Part II (2020) we see Ellie with her girlfriend Dina, but also see Lev, a trans character who escapes his abusive family. There was some controversy of course, with the simple inclusion of Lev and Ellie drawing fire from anti-LGBTQ groups, but the LGBTQ community also had issues with the game, specifically with how graphic what Lev goes through is, after we already know about their traumas. Despite this, I think it represents progress within the games industry as these characters have depth and are being handled with greater care, instead of being some stereotypical portrayal.

It isn’t just narrative driven games that feature LGBTQ characters, several multiplayer games feature characters which represent different parts of the community. The popularity of these games helps significantly represent these parts too as it’s relatively easy to find this information about them. Overwatch 2 (2022) features Tracer who is a lesbian, Baptiste who is bisexual, Soldier: 76 who is gay and many more. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege (2015) features Flores who is gay, Pulse who is bisexual, Sens who is non-binary, Osa who is trans and many more. There are several other games like this which feature a cast of characters which represent different aspects of the LGBTQ community, while there isn’t much focus in the characters themselves, they are still being represented and portrayed to a wide audience and done so in a respectful manner.

Improvements to be made

In recent years there has been a notable increase in positive LGBTQ representation in video games, with the above mentioned Last of Us II receiving acclaim for the portrayal of LGBTQ characters and storylines despite the controversy and criticism. However, even with this progress, stereotyping, lack of representation and harassment by players persist. The industry is continuing to navigate the complexities of this topic, by promoting inclusivity, diversity, and challenging stereotypes to create authentic representations of sexual and gender identities.
