Hadestown in New York

During my birthday trip to New York, I was lucky to see not one, but two Broadway shows! My first one was Hadestown! I saw the tour group when they came to New Orleans.
Truth be told on our way (my mom, sister, aunts, cousin, and myself) were running late due to New York traffic - and we called for a ride a whole hour early! At first, I thought we were gonna miss the first song, only for us to get in our seats and the show to start (miracles do exist).
I was really excited to see Lillias White play Hermes (once a goddess always a goddess), the original BWDY Orpheus & Eurydice played by Reeve Carney and Eva Noblezada (since her last show is Aug 13).
The cast and crew were amazing! If you get the chance whether it's on tour or in New York see Hadestown!

Don’t touch me I’m just thinking about when Soara Joye’s Persephone said “You think they’ll make it” it sounded so much more like she was TELLING Hades that he better believe they’ll make it rather than ASKING him if he thinks they will

Hadestown - Broadway - 10.2.23 Eve (2.10.23 as I was in the USA).
I had listened to the cast recording before going and wasn't too sure what to expect, but seeing the show live blewe away.
This show is has so many layers and so much depth I honestly don't know where to start.
There is more, but this is what I've managed to remember and articulate. I may edit and add more later.
Capitalism and collectivism
There is very heavy criticism of capitalism throughout, which was something I'd not picked up on when listening to the recording. Why We Build the Wall was the part that made me realise how interwoven the criticism was. The set/backdrop of an industrialised location/factory with people carrying out menial work to keep Hades happy and fuel his empire, really made the criticism clear. The same can be said for the way the actors would look down and were hunched over, indicating the weight of their labour and the opression of the masses by their leader. The workers singing in unionisin, and repeating what Hades says and/or directly responding to him in a robotic way shows how the monotony capitalism forces on the workers drains them of individuality and freedom; they are stuck - trapped - by the system, and cannot progress beyond what they are currently doing.
Orpheus was given the opportunity to lead Eurydice out of Hadestown, and also the other workers/souls. They say/are told that if he can leave then they all can, if they work together. This highlighting the idea of collective action. Hades even draws Orpheus's attention to this, making it clear that if he doesn't trust that Eurydice will follow him, then not only will she be returned to Hadestown, but so will the others.
Orpheus's actions, which resulted in Eurydice and the workers being sent back down to Hadestown, shows how self-doubt and not having a unified approach can undermine collective action.
Tom Hewitt - absolutely bloody brilliant. His voice is really rich and has a warm velvety sound to it. He is able to effectively portray Hades' mix of emotions from enamoured with Perspohone, to sad, to angry, to steely, all through his voice.
Eva Noblezada - her voice is beautiful
Jewelle Blackman - her voice is beautiful and her physical acting is something else - her body language radiated her emotions so clearly
Walter Kerr Theatre: weird things (from a Brit's perspective)
I'd never been to Broadway, so this was an experience.
1. There was no lobby at the Walter Kerr Theatre, you walked straight into the auditorium!
2. At interval (which is shorter than the UK) people were leaning on the stage. I know that no every theatre has an orchestra pit in the front, but leaning in the stage is weird.
3. The merch line had four people in it and the usher called up and said the line was too long!
4. No over priced ice-cream at interval :(

Are you brave or stupid, son? Doesn't matter which one 'cause it seems your song made quite a strong impression on my wife.

Tom Hewitt as Dr. Frank-n-Furter in the 2001 off-Broadway production of “The Rocky Horror Show”. During the run of the show, Luke Perry played Brad.

This is a really really long shot but does anyone have any footage of Alex Puette performing as Hades? I went to see Hadestown today and he was subbing for Tom Hewitt and he was seriously my favorite part of the entire thing. It'll probably be hard to find because he's an understudy but I'm going to try anyway
