Something that confused me is why the Animorphs didn't kidnap Tom and wait three days for his Yeerk to starve early on.

Maybe it was explained in a latter book.

But the Animorphs seem to never rely on kidnapping a controller and letting their Yeerk starve.

The problem I see is twofold:

Drawing attention to Jake

What do they do with him once they've got him?

For #1, the issue is that — until very late in the series — Tom's yeerk just isn't important enough to justify the "andalite bandits" putting that much effort into killing him. If that yeerk disappears, it begs the question of how the resistance knew Tom was a controller, and what's so special about him. If I was a yeerk, the first thing I'd do in response is infest Jake, Steve, and Jean. The Animorphs have to avoid attention, until eventually they have enough allies to come out in the open.

For #2, again there's a solution late in the series (hork-bajir valley) but in the beginning they don't have anywhere to stash a non-morphing human. Look at all the problems they run into with housing David — and David can come on missions with them. Tom's not Ax or Tobias; he can't feed or shelter himself. If he's on the run from the whole Yeerk Empire, he can't stay home or even in civilization. His survival skills include... jump shots? flirting with girls? It'd be a logistical nightmare, when these kids are already super-busy.

Also, a character consideration: Jake is so obsessed with Tom being his problem and his problems never becoming those of his team. If Jake could figure out a way to get Tom out alone, he might do it, but his personality justifies him never really trying.

I was living a nightmare. No, it was worse than a nightmare. In a nightmare, you have a chance of waking up. But I was already awake. There was nowhere else to go.

Temrash 114 had complete control over my body every second of the day. I couldn't even control what I looked at. He chose what my eyes were pointed at. All because I joined The Sharing.

And now they were trying to do the same thing to my little brother.

Since the thing at the construction site last night, Temrash 114 was more interested than ever in having Jake infested. The Yeerk used my body and voice to invite Jake to a meeting of The Sharing. Jake didn't seem interested at first. But a little later, he came to me and said he would come after all.

It was my worst fear: That my little brother would become trapped in the same Hell I was.

Jake was the very last person on Earth I wanted the Yeerks to infest. Even more than my parents - They were adults, they could look after themselves. But Jake was just a little kid. I needed to protect him. I was his big brother, it was my job to protect him but I couldn't!

Jake came to the bonfire at the beach. He ate the barbeque. He played volleyball with my impostor. He seemed to be having fun. He had no idea it was all a trap. And I couldn't warn him. I could only watch.

"Now you see why I enjoy this?" my mouth said. I tried to force my mouth closed, but I had no control over it. I couldn't stop the Yeerk from operating me like a machine.

"It's cool," Jake said. "I didn't realize it was so much fun."

The Yeerks couldn't have him. They could have anyone else - literally, anyone else - but not him!

"Well, that's not all it is," the Yeerk said through me. "I mean, it's more than just fun. The Sharing can do all kinds of things for you. Once you're a full member."

"How do you get to be a full member?" Jake asked. He was actually interested now.

No, please no. If there was ever a time I needed to get control of body back, it needed to be now. Right now! I had to warn him. I had to say, Don't join! Don't join!!

Instead, the Yeerk used my mouth to say, "Oh, that will come later. First, you become an associate member. Later the leaders will decide whether to ask you to become a full member."

I used all my willpower. I fought so hard to regain control. To send Jake some of warning. To just shake my head, a serious look, a frown, a blink, ANYTHING!

You can't have him!! Not Jake!! LEAVE MY BROTHER ALONE!!

My mouth smiled. "Once you become a full member . . . the whole world changes."

With every last bit of strength I had, and strength I didn't even know I had, I tried to shake my head and scream, "DON'T JOIN THE SHARING!!"

And something actually happened.

My head twitched. Just a little. Just a spasm. Just a tug of my mouth to the side and just a crease of my eyebrows.

But it wasn't the Yeerk. It was me. I did that. For the very first time, I moved my body against Temrash 114's will.

But it was only for an instant. After that split-second, the Yeerk slammed down control and returned my face to normal. I felt his anger. He was furious at me for showing such defiance.

But on the outside, he simply used my mouth to say, "I have to go for a while now. The full members have a separate meeting. You guys stay here and have fun. Have some more of that barbeque. It's great, isn't it?"

I could see Jake looking at me, wide-eyed and innocent. Then my body turned and walked away.

I was exhausted. It was such a strain to fight against the Yeerk. Even if Temrash 114 gave up and allowed me to use my body now, I wasn't sure I'd have any energy left to move around or speak clearly.

And I was more than exhausted. I was miserable. All that effort, all the mental anguish I put into it, and I only regained control for a fraction of a second. Even at my very best, all I managed was a tiny twitch in my face.

Jake probably didn't even notice . . .

no bc franky n iceburg's relationship still makes me crazy, and post ennies lobby while they're working on always sunny only cements that. iceburg was faced with losing franky again (and sailed the entire galley la company out in the middle of agua laguna to see that he survived ennies lobby), and forced to reevaluate what was important to him. while they were working on thousand sunny -- something that franky worried over, because he didn't want the world govt for coming iceburg like they came for tom -- iceburg said "i'm helping a friend achieve his dream. no matter the way you look at it, that's the only reason i'm here" and thought to himself 'you may have changed your name, changed your face and your body.... but you're still the same person i've always known. the same old friend’. and this just drives me nuts because iceburg forgave franky, was the first one to know that franky wanted to go with the ship, was able to convince him to go with the strawhats. he finally accepted franky for what he was -- one of the best shipwrights in the world, and his friend. the way that franky had seen him for years. and together, they build a new beginning

Eleutherophobia Tom obviously hates Yeerks and seems to find Andalites intimidating, but how does he feel about other aliens?

On a broad abstract scale, I think Tom is kind of indifferent to the other alien species. He's very very pro-human, like to the point of identity fusion — he assumes all humans are his allies, sees himself as human first and individual second, would die for any human, takes the human side of any conflict no matter how wrong the human is, etc. The events of Ghost in the Shell shake him out of that black-and-white thinking to an extent, because before that he has almost no concept of a human hurting another human as badly as a yeerk can hurt a human. But he's still going to default to "humans good, everything else not my concern" as a worldview.

So if he ever spent a lot of time around andalites, I imagine he'd be a lot like Ax is around humans in the early books: dead-set convinced that no alien can possibly have come up with something smarter or more moral than what his species have already done. Like Ax, he'd have to get over it eventually, but that'd be his starting frame. And it'd probably be much the same with hork-bajir and gedds and venber and whatnot, where he'd have an attitude of "you guys are fine, I guess, but my species is better." So, benign indifference.

Two exceptions:

Leerans: would creep him the hell out. Way too yeerk-like. Would blast "please go away" signals at the top of his mental voice while moving quickly in the opposite direction.

Taxxons: would, if he encountered them post-body-swap, fascinate him like a kid in the lighting aisle of Home Depot. After staring in awe at the sheer hypnotic beauty of 100+ giant snakes in one place at one time, he'd eventually shake it off and start going around the room like "Hi, my name's Tom, can I acquire your DNA?" "Hi, nice to meet you, I was just wondering if I could pretty-please morph you?" "Hi, I just met you and this is crazy, but..."
