Hand down on the opening Quad Toe. A bit forward on the opening Quad Toe but got the second jump off. Fall out of the Triple Axel. Nice Triple Sal. Nice spin. Popped that Axel into a single, but got the second jump off. Nice three-jump combo. Nice Triple Loop. Nice choreo sequence. Nice step sequence. Nice spins.
That was not the best program from Tomoki Hiwatashi. Just not what he needed to do here.
149.49, 230.80, and into third behind Ma and Paniot, and ahead of Martynov.

I looked away on the landing of the 3A which means that stepout/hand down didn’t happen

NHK 22 - Mens SP - Tomoki Hiwatashi - USA
Elements:
4Sq | 4T(hd)2T| 1A 3A| FSS2 | StSq2* | 2T | 1A | 3Lzeu1F | 3Lo | chCoSp4 | ChSq +1.25 | FChCoSp4
Program: Chaplin
Well… he had three clean elements, so I guess that’s a plus? Since he keeps putting the same thing out week after week, program after program, I’m really not sure where he needs to restart exactly. I think Tomoki shines best when he can have fun with a program and not get too squirly or tense about it. But anything a little too over-charactered, or too up-tempo usually ends up with some squirly technique in addition to his insecure landings and pops.
Score: 127.87, 185.05

There you go! Great skate from Tomoki Hiwatashi! After this season he had, that must feel so much redemption. Great job!

Tomoki Hiwatashi
Country: USA Age: 22 Career highlight: Winner the Junior World title in 2019 SP music: Music from Sherlock Holmes: A Games of Shadows
Comments: Hiwatashi’s skating is full of highlights – he’s very flexible, he’s dynamic, he’s got a quad toe loop and a quad salchow (on a good day), he tends to pick upbeat music in contrast to the mopey stuff. But he’s not a consistent jumper. For example, in this skate he doesn’t just double out of the first jump in the combination, he doesn’t do the second jump at all. Which explains why he hasn’t had huge success on the senior circuit yet. But he has all the potential!
Can we even call this a split jump when his legs are all the way up and out there?!
