Just Watched The Pilot of Blue-Eye Samurai

What a fantastic animated show...

It's an old trope with a few twists. A lone skilled warrior honed by factors seen as hindrances is on a vengeance quest. It's also a change to see a common tropey element (blue eyes on an East Asian ethnicity) not fetishized, as it so often is by western writers. *cough* Memoirs of a Geisha*cough* There is a great song that honestly feels out of place in a needle drop in this, but otherwise...I'm digging it so far.

It's a decent watch. I've been burned recently by giving that #thisisarec before finishing the media (pacing and lackluster ending for FNAF) but the pilot is good.

And it's free on youtube, for now...

Ossan's Love Returns spin-off part 2 eng sub

This is the second part of the two-part spin-off originally streamed on Telasa and concludes my journey of fansubbing Ossan's Love Returns.

We did it!! I translated over 11k lines of fast-paced comedic dialogue and people talking over each other. I feel like I am a better subber now than I was before I started this project haha. Thank you to everyone who came along on this journey! I'll make a masterpost at some point before the episodes disappear to the depths of my blog, but this is the terminal stop.

I forgot that I also have a kofi. No pressure in this economy, though!

Notes:

Tsumagoi is a town in Gunma prefecture known for cabbage.

Ikebukuro ('pond bag') is a commercial district in Tokyo.

Hotei Tomoyasu is a renowned guitarist. I think Takekawa-san was maybe trying to perform the theme from the yakuza film Shin jingi naki tatakai/New Battles Without Honor and Humanity. I don't recognise his lyrics from any Hotei song lol.

Maro calls Kikunosuke too kenage. I translated this to persevering but honestly there isn't a word in English that quite captures the full meaning of kenage. Kenage means heroic or brave but it's used to praise a weak or powerless person showing courage in the face of adversity, such as a child.

Ribbon and Nakayoshi are shoujo manga magazines.

The lifetime together line is again a reference to his old one hit wonder.

here are the other controllers I imported in this haul.

top left: two IR controllers with hand straps and main IR sensor for "Martial Beat", a karate rhythm game.

top right: guitar pick controller for "Tomoyasu Hotei Stolen Song". It's motion sensitive and you strum it to play the game, which is a guitar rhythm game.

bottom left: one controller split into two halves for another rhythm game, "Tam Tam Paradise". Each half has two top buttons and a bumper button on the long side of larger button. the controller comes with a foam base and velcro straps. the controller halves are meant to be beat like drums so I assume the foam base is there either to stop the controllers from sliding around or to dampen noise. I haven't seen any media of the controller in use so I'm not sure what's up with the straps. maybe to help hold them to your legs if you're sitting down?

bottom right: controller for the game "Bust a Move: Dance Summit 2001". it has two wired hand straps that plug in to the bottom of the tiniest ps1 controller you've ever seen. I'm not sure if the hand straps sense motion or if they're buttons though. I didn't look up gameplay for this one but my guess is that it's like DDR but using hands rather than feet since each hand strap has two of the four main controller buttons.
