The Curse of La Llorona
Director Michael Chaves has said that his debut feature, THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA (2019, Max), is not part of the CONJURING universe, but one of the characters, Father Perez (Tony Amendola), appears in ANNABELLE (2014) and refers to that film’s action. There’s even an image of him holding that ugly doll. That’s a sign of just how muddled this little bit of cultural appropriation is. Drawing on the legends of The Crying Woman, a Latin American version of Medea who killed her child to punish its faithless father, the film follows single mother Linda Cardellini, a social worker still grieving her Mexican-American husband’s death. She takes two boys from a mother (Patricia Velasquez) suspected of abuse, not realizing the woman was protecting them from La Llorona. When the ghost drowns the children, the curse passes to Cardellini’s own kids, leading to a bunch of jump scares. At first, the ghost is truly creepy. She only appears in reflections or through a clear, vinyl umbrella. But then she starts popping up all over the place and loses her horror film mojo. Moreover, there’s nothing distinctive about the film beyond good performances from Cardellini and, all too briefly, Amendola. There’s no sense of this Anglo woman’s blundering into a culture she doesn’t understand, even though the initial relationship with Velasquez would offer ample opportunities for that. Instead, the characters might just as well be dealing with a cursed doll or spirits from a Ouija board, it’s that bland and generic. There are a few nifty effects toward the end, but it hardly makes up for what goes before. If you want to see a truly creative use of the legend, check out Jayro Bustamente’s LA LLORONA (also 2019, Amazon), which updates the story to pit the spirit of an indigenous woman murdered by the Guatemalan military against a dictator standing trial for genocide.
