POOR THINGS
Some people have disagreed with me about my Poor Things review. However, my questions about the film have largely gone unanswered and the points I’ve raised haven’t really been addressed.
Yes, there were gowns beautiful gowns but is anyone going to talk about the fact that she was a child? Or that women face the risk of pregnancies when they have unprotected sex? Or menstruation being a thing? Or how the financially coercive nature of sex work prevents women from giving genuine consent to sex?
Should a man even be directing this movie?
When the upper classes create films about sex and sex work it always seems limited and disingenuous. They really made a movie about a child in a woman’s body having sex in situations where men are constantly taking advantage of her, called it “feminist” and patted themselves on the back for it.
Angelica Bastien put it best when she wrote: “But there’s a corroded spirit to the story, like it’s intermittently possessed by an edgelord who’s unaware most women menstruate, and an early-wave white feminist who believes having sex is the most empowering thing a woman can do. (For all the fucking, there is no menstrual blood!)”
The most problematic - but unexamined - aspect of contemporary discussions around sexual ethics, is the concept of consent. The powerful men (and women) who made this movie clearly live in a sexually privileged world and can afford to think of this movie as "feminist".
I wonder if they even know what intersectionality is.

Don't speak to me of unintended consequences. I know about unintended consequences… because Sweden. I could've said anything else, any other words. Salt bath, otter spit, Irish stew, hurt me, love me, kiss me, forget all, touch me, hit me, shit me. Love you with every sinew and one day it will hurt all over to never touch you again… to never… to never feel our eyes meet and inflame me. To never hear an inane thought that somehow made my blood sing… "Don't go, don't leave me, don't leave me." More than two, that last one, I know. I'm sorry. I could've said that.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman to Star in "‘The Roses", directed by Jay Roach
Tumblr media
Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Colman): successful careers, great kids, an enviable sex life. But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentments that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down.
“The Roses is a wildly funny, bigger than life, and yet deeply human story,” said Searchlight President Matthew Greenfield. “With Jay at the helm, and Benedict and Olivia and Tony, we have a dream team bringing it to life.”
🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
“We are thrilled to be working on this very special film with such an incredible team,” stated SunnyMarch’s Ackland. “We have been long admirers of Jay’s work and his vision and passion to tell this story is incredibly inspiring.”
Shared South of the River’s Colman and Sinclair, “We have been cooking this up with our friends at SunnyMarch for some time, and it has been an absolute thrill to see it spring into life under Jay’s passionate and thoughtful guidance. He and Tony are a match made in cinematic comedy heaven.”
Cumberbatch is producing under his SunnyMarch banner with the company’s Leah Clarke and Adam Ackland. Colman will produce under Her South of the River banner with partners Ed Sinclair and Tom Carver.

I'm still stuck with the way Poor Things was adapted:
Book:
Has 3 main parts: 1)Bella's story from the perspective of her husband: A grotesque gothic sci-fi of a baby in a woman's body that also works as a sociopolitical allegory for Scotland. 2) Victoria/Bella 's own objections nad attempt to tell her story, to reclaim it from her bitter, lying husband and the part that really ties the story to reality. 3)A (male) editor's notes.
Movie:
Uses only the part of the story delivered from the husband, which is criticized and Bella herself denounces in the book, as a tale of self-discovery and liberation.
Now, I'm NOT saying that the movie (despite its flaws and the end being completely acontextual from the version of the world they have presented) is not quite good as its own thing. I just think that it's weird how anyone adapting a book focused on a woman, with an entire section about her reclaiming her narrative, only keeps the part in which she has no voice.

THE GREAT 3.1: "The Bullet or the Bear" (2023)
Elizabeth (about Catherine): She doesn't want to be alone. Yesterday, she felt like a lone cloud in a sky full of ravens who didn't speak cloud, and yet she thought the previous day the sky was full of clouds.
Peter: It's complicated imagery.
Elizabeth: She was as lonely as a human can be. Her love betrayed her, her best friend lied to her, her team abandoned her, her philosophy broke in a Turkish blood spray, and her reason collapsed under the weight of it all. Her optimism, her arrogance, her belief in humans as good.
Peter: Well, she did describe it as a bad day.
Elizabeth: And now, she hopes to put the pieces together somehow. You go and betray her again.

p.s. missing this show extra today. I will never understand why it was canceled. Justice for quality TV shows!
