funny circumstance: as my hair gets longer ive learned to take better care of it. this means that my curls are getting fuller and lasting longer. which has had the adverse affect of making my hair shorter as it grows. it went from beneath my shoulderblades to primarily gathered around my neck. insane.

🌱 How to not overwater your plants

Check the top inch of the soil before you water. If it's wet or moist, don't add extra water

Check the bottom of the pan. Make sure the plant isn't standing in water, even if it's dry on top. The roots can still rot. Pour the water out if any remains after you water it.*

Feel the leaves. If they seem weak or too soft, they might be thirsty. Soft or weak leaves can also be a sign of pests or root rot

Look at the plant. The plants should not be hanging their leaves (the fittonia is known to hang its leaves dramatically if underwatered, which earned its name 'the fainting plant'. It should be avoided to let it get that far though)**

Make sure the pot has drainage holes at the bottom to let the water through.

*= If the water is pouring through too quickly, you can let it sit for about 5-10 minutes to let the plant soak up what it needs, and then toss the water out.

**= The plant can also hang its leaves when it's getting too much water. If the soil is wet, don't water it, no matter how much it looks like it's fainting.

On the topic of plants in the Darklands - ignoring the fact there are multiple interpretations of Bowser's domain that span the entire spectrum of climates - I'm having some thoughts.

Because of the volcanic climates, the plants diversity would be large. Not only would the soil be rich in nutrients, but the terrain would prove good for various habitats. However, they'd have to be able to reproduce fairly quickly, at least I think so. Plants are destroyed during eruptions but apparently comeback quickly, so they must have a fairly short growth time. Those capable of surviving eruptions and fire would probably grow far slower.

Now the issue is whether we want to headcanon the climate to be hot or for it to be cold. Lava can only get you so far, if there's no sun then there is no heat.

For a hot climate, I'm thinking something that resembles cacti and succulents. Very thick and waxy and capable of storing a lot of water at a time. Tall try grasses could work too, specifically around actively flowing lava lakes. Further down is where truly colourful and extravagant flowers could grow.

In terms of dark climates, smaller plants would have the best luck growing. Less light means less sugar being produced. Less sugar means the plant cannot grow well. It'd remain small to preserve as much energy as possible.

Hmm...

And I wish I could go in depth about trauma resistant plants and specific features of plants that survive best in humid conditions, but google is failing me and is not showing me any papers about this.
