Stainless Works to Stand Out at Summit Motorsports Park as Sponsor

Stainless Works is set to have a prominent presence at Summit Motorsports Park this year. The company is the title sponsor for the 17th Annual Stainless Works Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser, June 2-4, 2023 at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. The Surfers: Drag racing history

An email from my dad:

I recently watched three or four 10-minute episodes of a YouTube series, "The Surfers." It's very low production, just guys telling stories with a few hand-held pictures. The Surfers were a group of drag racers who, right out of high school, decided to build and race a dragster. They built one in the garage of an apartment one of them was renting...and soon had the top dragster on the west coast (I saw them run in '68) A couple of vignettes...

The guy telling the stories was the engineering brains of the group of 3 "Surfers." They wanted to build a dragster, and he found that there were tons of surplus tubing left over from the Korean war that were available cheap because the gauge was just off from what was required for most things. So they bought a bunch of tubing, found a guy at LAX who would bend it for them, and they had the chassis for their dragster! Today, engine builders for top fuel dragsters and funny cars take a block of aluminum billet and make an engine out of it. Like so. Back then--'62-'68--guys took various Chrysler, Ford, Chevy, etc., engines, modified them with cams, superchargers, fuel injection, and stuck them in a dragster. The Surfers discovered that the best engines were 392 c.i. Chrysler hemis. They could take a lot of punishment, and the hemi heads were perfect for making a ton of horsepower. But Chrysler only made them from '55 to '57, and there weren't a lot of 392 engines lying around in SoCal. Well, the mechanic had a friend in Brooklyn who scouted the junk yards in New York and New Jersey for rusted out Chryslers. He'd buy the engines, crate them, and put them on the train to LA.

Everyone else at the time was running about a 50% nitro/50% alcohol mix. But the Surfers mechanic did some actual science and figured that they could lower the compression ratio, load up with 70% nitro (or higher), and gain a big advantage. Plus, they had a supply of 392 Chrysler engines in case they blew one up.

Today, after every run, crews tear the engines of fuel cars down to the bare block and replace rods, pistons, possibly valves, and clutch discs. Back then, when engines were making maybe 20% of the horsepower, crews might drop the oil pain and check main bearings. (The Surfers mechanic also looked into the hydro-dynamics of wedge bearings, finding the right clearances for best endurance and performance.) But they didn't dismantle engines between rounds--or between races! And the clutch was just a regular clutch beefed up...and designed for the disc not to fly apart, though some were launched to quite a height (one was launched down, and cut Don Garlits's dragster frame in two, also severing part of his foot--one reason they now put drivers in front of the engine [ At the 1:00 mark] . They didn't check or change clutches between races. The dragsters didn't have transmissions. The clutches engaged fully at the start, and the spinning rear tires acted as a kind of constantly variable transmission as the car went down the track. So the Surfers discovered that the more wear and tear they put on the clutch, the quicker their car went. It slipped more at the start, so the tires didn't spin as much, and the car got down the track quicker.

The clincher came--this is the story the guy told--when one of their competitors unintentionally installed the clutch disc backwards, so it slipped badly until the car was half-way down the track...and went faster than ever before. In no time at all, "slippy clutches" were on every dragster. Today, a crew will bring a couple of hundred clutch discs and plates to a race (Clutch assembly explained). Terry McMillen, like every crew, has a dedicated clutch specialist, a woman named KayLynn Simmons.
