Today is the second day of the Omer. This day is represented by Miriam. I was picturing her, crossing the sea, all of the people behind her and her brothers. I see her looking behind her at the Israelites, as a range of emotions play across their faces. And she just knows what's needed in the moment is music. She takes her timbrel and sings, her words and melody carrying much louder than what should be possible. All the people hear her clearly and feel, perhaps for the first time in their lives, hope and the possibility of a future.
And when her foot finally touches the other side, she stays there at the edge, flanked by Aaron and Moses - boulders in the river of people passing by. She continues her song, a siren to the exhausted and weak stragglers who want to give up.
The last of the Israelites cross, her timbrel has stopped. And as she sings her final notes she sees the approaching Egyptians. But it's too late, the walls of water have already begun to fall. Miriam sees the horror on their faces as they realize it's too late, there's nothing now that they can do to change their fate. And she sees them crushed by the weight of the sea.
When the water settles, and the music has gone quiet, she remembers them. She will always remember them, and the cost her people's freedom demanded. The weight of this memory will tinge her songs for the rest of her days. And yet, she will continue to sing.

Question: When I’m meditating, I mostly flip-flop between trying not to fall asleep and getting lost in my thoughts and fantasies. How do I stop going back and forth between drowsiness and monkey mind?
Anita Feng: Whenever you wander into the stupor of sleepiness or the labyrinth fantasies of the monkey mind, just note this occurrence. There is no need to be distracted further by imposing any ideas about the quality of your practice. Just come back, and recognize these “obstacles” as helpful guideposts along the way. You are on the path, which is wonderful! Furthermore, you see what your mind is doing—this is essential! Just imagine how many human beings are lost in a dream, utterly controlled by delusions and perpetuating pain for themselves and others.

Nov. 4, 2019 Lech Lecha When we make big changes in our lives, it helps if we can make a gradual adjustment. Major life events, unfortunately, are not gradual. They come about from crisis, trauma, catastrophe or the turning points of life such as marriage, the birth of a child or the death of a loved one. In a life-defining moment, everything seems to change. In this parsha we are given the good advice to make changes gradually and to try, if possible, not to overhaul our lives all at once. Slow the process down and try to make it transitional rather than abrupt. Take time to accommodate the changes and allow yourself to grow from the situation. Yoga Start your new exercise program with easy seated poses Seated waist turn Sit sideways in a chair on the right side. Inhale. Turn right, exhale, hands to chair back. Inhale, turn back to start Sit sideways in a chair on the left side. Inhale. Now, turn left, exhale, hands to chair back. Inhale, turn back to start Great easy stretching pose.
