“Faithfull’s voice, raggedly notched and erratic, sometimes starts flat or strikes a note that’s like a bald tire hitting a patch of glare ice. But what’s there all the time is this ripping knife of an alto, rueful and accusing and strangely vulnerable. What is in this voice? Only a few notes perhaps but a gallon of prussic acid, a season of tropical cloudbursts, the grittiest pale Northern skies, the emptiest gray hotel rooms. And endless, sleepless flights, thousands of cigarettes, Remy Martin, sex that’s the nostalgia of sex and happiness that’s just the memory of happiness. Hope that if you die before you awake you really won’t be aware of it. And the most unexpected sweetness.”
/ Gary Indiana reviewing Marianne Faithfull’s concert at the Bottom Line in NYC for The Village Voice on 15 December 1987 /
Happy birthday to exquisitely ravaged, resilient and timeless gravel-voiced art-rock diva of broken hearts, Marianne Faithfull (born 29 December 1946). The closest equivalent we have to a present-day Dietrich, Piaf or Holiday turns 76 today. Pictured: portrait of Faithfull by Michel Comte from the photo shoot for her underrated 1995 album A Secret Life.

It would be difficult to be the founder of a nonprofit called ‘Divabetic’ and not love DIVAS!
Thankfully, I do! So many iconic female vocalists have inspired, comforted, and thrilled me throughout my lifetime. They are the soundtrack of my life which is why the lyrics to the new holiday song, "Pink Champagne,” by Ivan Hampden Jr. and Paulette McWilliams, is a tribute to many of my idols, including Ella, Carmen, Eartha, Betty, and Marlena.
For some of you, Marlena Shaw’s name might not be as well-known as the others, but her classic rendition of “Go Away Little Boy” is my all-time favorite. It’s a magical performance because her brilliant storytelling makes you want to see her perform it live again and again.
Last November, I set out to write a signature song like that for the holidays. Fortunately, my friend Paulette McWilliams, a highly respected vocalist who performs for audiences worldwide, crafted a beautiful melody for Ivan Hampden Jr. to create and produce a lush, beautiful orchestration.
I wanted to write a song to make fans yearn to see Paulette perform live and in person. I imagined her on stage, dressed in a baby blue satin Balenciaga gown, in a crowded smoke-filled jazz club with people dripping in diamonds and furs sitting in plush velvet booths sipping cocktails. In the middle of “Pink Champagne”, she signals to her music director; I imagine that person is Nat Adderley Jr., who slows down the tempo. Paulette sashays over to a small table on stage and lifts a crystal flute of pink champagne. She takes a sip before sharing a touching but funny true story of experiencing heartache during the holidays. When she finishes, she lifts her glass, toasts the audience, and resumes the song's end.
Of course, I’m there too, sitting at the bar, doing my best Daniel Craig impersonation, dressed in a Tom Ford tuxedo sipping something cool and sophisticated. Actually, if this is truly a fantasy, then Daniel Craig is sitting next to me. LOL :)
Okay, now enjoy the song  “Pink Champagne” by Ivan Hampden Jr. and Paulette McWilliams, and then let me know what you think. Cheers!

Chris Andrews SONG OF THE WEEK: “Standing in the Rain” https://timchrisandrews.bandcamp.com/track/standing-in-the-rain —A rock’n’roll torch song, cut in the style of Jerry Lee Lewis or Freddy Fender, and sung with British verve by Chris Andrews—a singer-songwriter and recording artist whose songs have been covered by Roger Daltrey, David Essex, and Davy Jones (Monkees). Under the name Tim Andrews he was a champion of late 60s psychedelic pop and (later), as Kris Ryder, he released New Wave synthpop sides in the 80s. Chris was also part of the seminal freakbeat band Fleur de Lys. “Standing in the Rain” is one of Chris’s more recent sides (don’t forget your umbrella)…

Double Down- Album Trailer- Colette O'Connor
Introducing a small sample of the music that will be a part of Double Down, my 13-track, next album. Releasing everywhere, March 4, 2024.
This Album Trailer will, I hope, provide a bit of fanfare for it's upcoming release because it's something special. It's all about consequences.
For instance, How Did The Devil. It's a piano "torch song" mythology about how the Devil got his horns. It's got soulful questions that have been asked many times.
How did a mighty Angel fall from grace?
What were the consequences of transforming a Halo into Horns?
What, within us, still bends to all those old tricks, after all this time?
I think we can all relate to this dire topic today. Sharing an apple? Falling from Grace? Fighting for your survival?
I also think we can all stand to look in the mirror again because, every day it seems, there's another crack.
This Album Trailer also has bits of a 12-Bar Blues track about a two-timing gambler and his demise; a classic rock retelling of Hound Dog (from a more personal perspective); a smoky Blues-bar story about Robert Johnson's Ghost and (IT'S OFFICIAL) an out of this world cover of song by The Decemberists...that relates how neighbor killing neighbor over religious differences has never really stopped, despite the last Biblical flood. I've only ever done originals, so, for me, this is a powerful re-telling.
On this Album Trailer, you'll hear a bit of Put Another Nail In. That's the heart of it all, for me as an independent singer songwriter. Raw and real. I hope people hear the intent. History repeats because we have not learned. We know better but somehow there are those that chose to become the Devil.
I wrote most of Put Another Nail In while my father was alive but could only finish it after he died. I reached down, deep, for this and all the new album's music/art and this Trailer will share much of that with you too. Peace. May we all find it. Love, Colette

When you know, you know
At first I was baffled upon hearing “Judah Smith Interlude”, the fifth track on Lana Del Rey’s ninth album. Of course, it’s pretty much a guarantee that when you put a four-and-a-half minute recording of an evangelical christian charlatan minister sermonizing, I will immediately hate it. I grew up catholic. I hate sermons, and to hear someone lecturing a congregation as arrogantly as Smith does…

B & W for the fanfic asks
Thank you!!!
B-first fandom I read/wrote for
My best friend introduced me to fanfic when we were eleven years old, and she was really into Lilo and Stitch: the Animated Series. This was not a show I had very strong feelings about, but I loved the concept of fanfic and wrote some partial stories in my comp notebook. The main one was about Pleakley, the one-eyed cross-dressing alien, getting into a fake dating relationship with a straight human male OC who’s very chill about it. I also started one where Pleakley is in love with Lilo’s older sister/guardian Nani but is worried that he’s not masculine enough for her. The first fandom I ever completed or posted a fic for, though, was Sweeney Todd (the 2007 movie but I’d seen the stage musical and liked it better so I just kind of took and left elements from both canons). I was seventeen by then and it was a terrific creative outlet. I wrote mostly about minor characters (Anthony, Johanna, Lucy, and Beadle Bamford).
W—favorite pairings to read/write
So, for Stranger Things, Jancy is the pairing I cannot get enough of, reading-wise, and it’s my go-to for writing long fics. I also like reading Hellcheer, Stoncy, Jargyle, and Stonathan, but I’m kind of pickier about those. Not in terms of quality, more like in terms of tropes, setting, and character interpretation. (I don’t vibe with Stoncy that follows directly after S4, Hellcheer if I don’t like the background pairings or if the author thinks the early seasons are boring, Jargyle if the author is unfair to Nancy, or Stonathan if Steve is too nice/Jonathan is too mean in that flanderized fanon-y way.) I’m not super-invested in the adult or younger teen ships, but I like the odd Lumax, Byler, or Jopper. I like to write a lot of things besides Jancy, even ships I don’t usually like to read, because I can write it how I like!
Other fandoms: Megan/Ginsberg and Ginsberg/Stan/Peggy for Mad Men. Theon/Robb and Jaime/Brienne for ASOIAF. Those are the only other fandoms I’ve read fic for lately.

Lana Del Rey - High by the Beach 2015
"High by the Beach" is a song recorded by American singer Lana Del Rey and the first single from her fourth studio album, Honeymoon. Lyrically, "High by the Beach" is a self-assured kiss-off torch song containing several lyrical themes, including self-deprecation, nihilism, independence, and indolence. A representation of the challenges of staying in love, it specifically details Del Rey being worn down by life and love, and in turn seeking sweet escape near the ocean to enjoy recreational drug use.
The song debuted at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 a week after its release, spending three weeks on the chart altogether. It also ranked at number 89 in Triple J's Hottest 100 songs of 2015 in Australia. Rolling Stone ranked "High By the Beach" at number 18 on its year-end list of the 50 best songs of 2015. Pitchfork ranked the song at number 75 on its year-end list of the 100 best songs of 2015.
"High by the Beach" received 54,5% yes votes.
