it occurred to me that I've mentioned more than once lately about being complimented in public for the smut I've written and I thought, I should tell that story
only sadly it's not much of a story. basically just a fan meetup at Torchsong 2009 (the cursed con where Barrowman sprained his ankle before it started and couldn't fly out, but still complimented my rack via satellite) in which a bunch of authors who were in the same fan space on livejournal planned to get together at dinner the Friday before the con officially started. someone made badges and when they handed them out, people recognized my LJ name (edibleflowers) and were like "hey! you write good smut!"
boy now that I think about it that con was Certainly a Time. got to chat with mark sheppard, gareth david-lloyd and what's his face... dammit I have to look it up. some guy from highlander. (peter wingfield!) carole barrowman, who is john's sister and an author in her own right, and her daughter were there. I had my Jack pony* that I'd made and someone was like "has carole seen this yet?" and when I said no, they basically took it from me, dragged me over to her and pushed it into her hands. this was all in a positive fashion. the next day when my con-roommate and I went to lunch, carole walked in and gave me a nod of recognition, so that felt surreal. passed david prowse in the halls multiple times. tom price was run into by a bicyclist, broke his arm and had to leave early on sunday. and then the organizers were garbage and took forever to send out the photographs. sometimes I look back and wonder if that all really happened or if it was some kind of fever dream.
I do remember that GDL gave the nicest hugs. So maybe it was real.
oh, and re the Jack pony:

MONDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO “Standing in the Rain”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94ASNMrwpF4 —A rock’n’roll torch song, cut in the style of Jerry Lee Lewis or Freddy Fender, and sung with British verve by Chris Andrews—a singer-songwriter and recording artist whose songs have been covered by Roger Daltrey, David Essex, and Davy Jones (Monkees). Under the name Tim Andrews he was a champion of late 60s psychedelic pop and (later), as Kris Ryder, he released New Wave synthpop sides in the 80s. Chris was also part of the seminal freakbeat band Fleur de Lys. “Standing in the Rain” is one of Chris’s more recent sides (don’t forget your umbrella)…

loving you was like swallowing swords and sweating scissors. nobody move nobody get hurt, nobody mention the heart inert.
loving you was like the sky screaming in my eardrum, throwing bolts where they don’t belong. Set fire the choir of a torchsong.
loving you was like i don’t know if I’m the jar or the firefly or it’s guts smeared on the wall to keep your room aglow and i;
i loved you like go ahead and smear my guts on every labored labyrinth. loved you like I shattered my hands cleaning the fire pit, again.
i loved you like my feet don’t know the steps but my hips knew all the rest.

'*****
I knew when I saw the call from my mum that it was far too late/early to be good news. Within two hours of being told my dad was in a coma, he was gone, many hours before I could board a flight home from Australia to Scotland. While I suspect he knew, we never actually had the conversation about my sexuality. And obviously we never will.
These thoughts swirled around my head as tears raced like rivulets in the rain again across my face while watching writer-director Andrew Haigh’s latest masterpiece, All of Us Strangers. Adapted by Haigh from Japanese author Taichi Yamada’s novel Strangers, it casts a never-better Andrew Scott as Adam, a lonely film writer holed up in a new London apartment tower that appears to be almost entirely empty.
Apart from, that is, Harry, the hunky younger neighbour Adam spies leaning against his sixth-floor window while the older man diligently takes to the street during a fire alarm. As played by Paul Mescal in a similar shade of barely constrained aching as his rightfully Oscar-nominated performance in Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun, Harry is a lost soul.
Indeed, he jokes with a wounded charm that he may in fact be a vampire when asking to cross the threshold of Adam’s apartment, full of whisky and lust, one fateful evening. This request, denied, is framed in the blue-tinged ghostlight that dances in the ether, cast from a television screen in which Jimmy Somerville is frozen mid-torchsong.
Adam, whose parents were killed in a car crash when he was 12-years-old, has inherited a fear of intimacy both through this trauma and, later, the long shadow of the HIV/AIDS crisis, when sex could equal death. But even as he holds Harry’s advances at arm’s length, he finds himself catching a train out of London, seeking solace in the shadows that stand still in his childhood home.
If at first Jamie Bell’s leather jacketed man lurking in the bushes nearby appears to be a beat pick-up manoeuvre in waiting, instead this shadowy figure proves, impossibly, to be Adam’s father, appearing as if the very same age as the day he died. Heading back with him to the home they shared together reveals The Crown star Claire Foy as his mum, also somehow emerged from glowing amber.
Ghostlight
It’s a tantalising thought, what we would say to a lost loved one if we could steal one more night, or maybe more. One that’s sure to play heavy with tear-slicked pain on the mind of anyone in a similar situation.
But if Adam’s parents, seemingly aware of the strange fracture in time in which they pass their days, can catch up on all that has passed in his achingly empty decades without them, these conversations carry complexity. Mum worries he will ‘lead a lonely life,’ and then, as Adam does, indeed, invite Harry upstairs and gradually into his life, that the adverts she recalls as heavy as tombstones will place her son at risk with his ‘special friend’.
Adam also gets to level with his dad about why he never came into his room when the older/now younger man says he would hear him cry alone at night. And as he and Harry pull closer together, losing themselves in a K-hole of neon nights in Vauxhall, the spectre of Adam’s secret second life may yet tear them apart again.
A deeply confronting, cathartic film wrought in the silvery starlight of Living cinematographer Jamie Ramsay’s graceful camera, Haigh has surpassed even Weekend (2011).
Mescal and Scott’s dance will speak to anyone who has never felt able to be held, to those with words left unspoken and others lost in search of answers never coming. I’ll never get to have that conversation with my dad, almost 15 years gone, awkward truths or not.
But it plays out in my head still. As will Haigh’s terrible and beautiful film, a haunting lullaby caught on a breeze carrying the broken glass poetry of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s The Power of Love and the Pet Shop Boys’ Elvis refrain, Always On My Mind.'

It seems at this point that I think of plot in terms of "what happens immediately next", which is great for shorter fics but not for the longer ones I have started to become used to writing. Honestly it's kind of funny when I look back over my writing career; I used to consider fics done at 1000 or 2000 words, and I very rarely wrote longer.
A couple of exceptions stick out to me, both from Torchwood (which is when I think my writing began to evolve): World Enough and Time (54k) and Three Times (14k). The first was based on RP with my best friend, which was really why it was so long; I had a lot of inspiration to draw on. The other was rockier to write because I didn’t plot it out, just started with the initial inspiration of a scene and kept going. In both cases, I didn’t bother separating them out into chapters; I was posting on Livejournal and just wanted to stuff as much as could fit into each post. I’ve seriously considered going back and breaking up World Enough at least into a couple of chapters, but the fic is from 2010 and at some point you have to let things go.
Anyway, it’s been kind of fun (emphasis on the “kind of”) to find that my writing has generally been leaning towards longer fics as time goes on. There was the Werewolves of Lucis series for FFXV; It didn’t even feel all that weird to come out with a 36k word fic in JJBA (do you understand, do you feel the same), and of course I knew from the beginning that blue (songs are like tattoos) would be extra long but I didn’t realize how much additional material I’d be writing for that (holy shit, with all the extra stories it’s 116k).
The only problem is I’ve never really learned how to plot and outline a fic. I’d read writing advice and go “yeah yeah” and tune it out, because I never thought I’d need that type of knowledge. I just wrote short smutty fics! I was known for writing short smutty fics (ah, Torchsong 2009, I’ll never forget getting complimented in public for my smut). But I had to make the effort with the final actual fic in the Werewolves series, because the plot was getting out of hand and it needed to include elements from the game’s story as well as stuff from Kingsglaive. That worked out pretty well; I basically just made a list of things that needed to happen, and that gave me the perspective I needed to write the fic. (Of course, it also gave me twice the amount of plot for the fic, so a lot of that got cut out with the intent to use it in the next fic in the series. Which never happened. Oops. Fannish interest fades, life goes on, etc.)
Now I’m trying to outline and plot properly for the next part of secure yourself to heaven and man, plotting is hard. I knew that already but still. I’ve been looking at the outline doc I made in Notetab, I’ve been poking at a sort of summary thing I wrote to organize my thoughts over on Pillowfort, I even found a physical notebook to write in. That one’s because I’m thinking about trying to note down a sort of parallel set of events that are ongoing, and it might need columns. In any case, I think I’m still thinking in terms of Things That Happen, and it’s possible this may be how it works for me? Just make a bullet point list and do some free association? Whatever gets this goddamn fic done at this point.
