Goten over the years! These are some concepts for a Super rewrite thing a friend and I have been working on :)
Goten is the main character along with Trunks... To expand on what Toriyama sort-of set up in DBZ, Goten and Trunks are intended to be the new generation full of promise, and take a much more important role in the story and conflicts than Super as it is.
There's a lot here and I've been drawing a lot of concept art regardless so I'm sure I'll expand on some of this stuff later haha. Goten and Trunks' fusion training on Metamor in particular is something I've been having a lot of fun with...
[Image ID.
Image 1: A digital artwork of three full-body depictions of Goten, lined up next to each other against a blank background, at different ages. The first age, labelled '>7' at the top, shows a young Goten in his gi as he appears in Dragon Ball Z, smiling at the viewer. Handwritten notes around him read:
Makeshift gi made by Chi-Chi for his training
No tail... yet (removed at birth)
Chi-Chi & Goten can't cut hair very well so it became a Goku-esque bird's nest
Lives simply and happily with his family, but becomes uncomfortable when he feels like something is being kept from him or he is missing something
Semi-frequent excursions to West City to see the Briefs -- his world is Mt. Paozu and Capsule Corp
Partners-in-crime with Trunks -- though this is actually the phase of life they see each other the least. Their partnership is also less equal at this time with Trunks taking the lead more & Goten deferring to the older kid.
The second age is labelled '11', and shows a visibly older Goten, over a head taller than the last age. He is dressed in the outfit he wears for most of Dragon Ball Super, and now as a tail hanging by his side. He is smiling at the viewer and holding up a peace sign. Handwritten notes around him read:
Super timeline starts
Grew back tail from the stress of Beerus's threats (along with Trunks) -- they were so excited their parents didn't remove them again (so long as the moon stays destroyed)
Struggles with loneliness when Gohan marries Videl & moves out, and visits him regularly, often without warning
Motivated to train more seriously with Goku -- wants to protect Earth and his family
The third age is labelled '14-15', and is also visibly older. He is wearing his outfit from the 'Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero' movie and has a sheepish smile on his face while waving at the viewer. His tail is curled up by his side. Handwritten notes around him read:
Now attending Blue Hal School with Trunks -- they are getting a lot closer
Getting very serious abt training -- now doing fusion training on Metamor with Trunks
Increasingly feeling the toll of Earth's safety beginning to be entrusted to him
Gets along very well with most ppl at school but struggles to form deeper connections -- a bit of a social drifter
In his spare time, video games are starting to be a major form of escapism
More assertive around people he knows well, but struggles with acquaintances
Realises he's bi :)
Image 2: A digital artwork of three more full-body depictions of Goten, continuing on from the last image. The first age is labelled '16-17' and shows an older Goten in his school uniform from the latest manga arc of Dragon Ball Super, holding his school bag with his other hand on his waist, smiling confidently at the viewer. His tail curls inward towards his legs. Handwritten notes around him read:
More involved in the community -- operating as a hero with Trunks, forming deeper bonds at school
Keeps himself busy with a variety of extracurriculars, parties, casual dates, and odd jobs for cash
Learns instant transmission!
Still goes with the flow but now more confident in his independence
Some of his activities take him away from Trunks but even apart they are close -- always texting
Official video game addict
Training is still very important to him but just one factor of his schedule & interests
The next age is labelled '19'. Goten is dressed in a loose-fitting purple shirt with Sonic the Hedgehog on it, with a black undershirt under it, loose yellow pants, and large black boots with red soles. He is stretching his arms and looking to the left with a dazed expression, and his tail is wrapped around his left leg. Handwritten notes around him read:
Has moved out & is living with Trunks in a bid for independence
Attempted uni for a semester, quit, still doing odd jobs -- a tiny bit directionless
No longer operating regularly as a hero but sometimes helps Gohan
Dedicated to training as a lifestyle, much like Goku, but does a lot of other things
He and Trunks are attempting to be financially indepedent
Sometimes suffers burnout
Apartment is in Central City, but frequently visits home and Gohan with instant transmission.
The next age is labelled '22+', and shows Goten in a gi very similar to Goku's during DBZ, complete with the 悟 ('go') kanji, with chunky blue boots. He is smiling broadly at the viewer, and has hair similar to Goku's except much longer -- going down past his chin. Handwritten notes around him read:
Runs a martial arts/swordsmanship school with Trunks!
Still messes around with odd jobs but the school is his main focus
Also runs community programs through the school
He and Trunks are two of the major Z Fighters on call in case of emergency
Image 3: The last two images put together, except without the handwritten notes.

In the second Naruto artbook there is a drawing of Naruto and Sakura in swimwear. The comment from Kishimoto about that piece about Sakura is: "Making Sakura wear a bikini was kind of embarrassing, so I opted for shorts for her too." Kishi really is a peculiar one when it comes to fan service and his female characters.
I wish I could see that comment though. I tried searching the Internet, but it seems nobody is interested in what Kishimoto has to say about his pictures...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was fairly easy to get the Actual Picture but the scans of the commentary (Top Right corner) is so unclear.
The comment from Kishimoto about that piece about Sakura is: "Making Sakura wear a bikini was kind of embarrassing, so I opted for shorts for her too."
But I do believe it's very Kishimoto-esque to say this.
Because just to research about other Mangakas Artworks (not from the Manga necessarily but from a Poster, Promo Art kinda)
Tumblr media
This is an Artwork from Dragon Ball and the theme is very evident to our eyes.
Tumblr media
This artwork is taken from My Hero Academia's mangaka Horikoshi's Twitter handle.
Now, I am not going to say that both of these Mangakas are perverts since they drew their Female Lead in a Bikini.... because I know jackshit about their works.
My whole point is, Kishi was inspired by Dragon Ball's author Akira Toriyama's works... And Horikoshi got inspired by Kishimoto...
While the other authors don't mind drawing their Female Lead in a Bikini, Kishimoto getting embarrassed to draw Sakura in a Bikini or getting embarrassed to date a Female Character from his own manga or feeling shy to draw Naruto and Hinata kissing each other before they turn 18 sounds sooo hilarious to me.
He sexualized Sasuke. He said he wanted to date Shikamaru... He made Naruto and Sasuke to kiss each other before they even turn 18. He literally did everything with his Male characters which he said he won't do with his Female Characters though.
SMH... Kishi indeed is a peculiar one when it comes to Fanservice and his Female Characters.

I was in the mood to draw stuff in a Toriyama-esque style, so after sketching out a Super Saiyan God Goku, I randomly thought of Movie Sonic and asked myself "what if Movie Sonic had been drawn in that style?", with these two being the end result. There was just no way I was gonna draw a Sonic in Toriyama's style and NOT include Super Sonic in all this. While Goku was the main source of inspiration, I did also look towards the Sonic CD anime cinematics for how to best approach Sonic's quills, since the animators from Studio Junio worked heavily on Dragon Ball and its sequel series up until Cell's bout with Trunks.

[DragonBall fans really make me want to barf. In today's excursion, I saw a guy say that Vegebul makes perfect sense "statistically and scientifically" because women are "always attracted" to the "strongest men" and rattled off all this bs as to why of course Bulma fell in love with the man who treated her like a literal servant, never called her by name, and some shit about how convicts always get women because theyre convicts and just...really fucking gross, Andrew Tate-esque garbage. Basically, it was the "alpha male" bullshit and I thought I was going to puke 🤢🤢
I hate this fandom. Especially the nasty guys in it. Like it's really no wonder they think Toriyama's sexist writing is "goated." It fits right along with their own sexist notions of how relationships and women work. 🙄🙄]

Seeing as I've more or less adopted the Triclops race and am doing more with it than Toriyama ever will, I'm tempted to dive deeper and really try to give it some special somethings. Saiyans and Frieza's race aren't the only ones to get "cool/interesting" shit.
Imagine. An uncontrollable rage transformation (or technique?) where a negative energy-esque aspect of the user's ki is utilized. The more malicious and bloodthirsty their thoughts & desires are = the stronger they become **without limit**, but in a very self-destructive way that drastically shortens their lifespan if it gets severe enough. They're essentially using their soul itself to burn and fuel their rage. A Triclops that dies to this transformation doesn't go to Other World, instead completely disappearing from the universe since their soul has effectively become ethereal ash.
Amita would've definitely taken this on at least once (she went through a very traumatic experience that her mother and fellow community members completely brushed off), and it terrified her when she was snapped out of it. It's a large part of the reason why she tries to maintain her composure at all times, and can come off as emotionless now and then. The other part being because she's just cynical af.

I have a headcanon for Super Saiyan 4.
So, to achieve Super Saiyan 4, the Saiyan needs to be able to become a Super Saiyan and be able to transform into a great ape and regain their consciousness while in their Oozaro form, like how Goku and Vegata did.
But my headcanon is that Super Saiyan 4 is the TRUE Super Saiyan form.
While not a major factor during the series, a Saiyan's tail can be both their greatest strength but also their Achilles heel and losing their tail is basically unthinkable and shameful, such as when Raditz got upset about Goku losing his tail.
The tail helps the Saiyan's stamina, as evidenced by kid Goku being able to hold his Super Saiyan 3 form once he regrew his tail, before he couldn't hold it because of his younger child body.
When Vegeta talked about the legendary transformation in the namek saga, you could see a golden ape as the Super Saiyan form, which is what Goku transformed into when he fought baby in GT
Also the design of Super Saiyan 4, it seems to go more into the idea of the Oozaro form, such as the fur. The hair also remains the user's original hair colour (Black for Goku and dark brown for Vegeta (Vegeta does have dark brown hair, passed on from his father, you can see it rarely and with Vegito, I think its just easier for the artists to do it black))
It's also the case of why Super Saiyan 4 is so radically different in design compared to the other forms. (I know one could say Toriama wanted to make something fresh).
I mainly think this because you need to be able to transform into a Super Saiyan and a great ape in order to achieve this form, having Super Saiyan 2 and 3 isn't a necessity. (The only Saiyan who skipped a transformation level was Gotenks, not having a Super Saiyan 2 form, only 1 and 3)
So having a great ape and Super Saiyan are key elements to achieving the TRUE Super Saiyan form.
I dont know, maybe I'm reading into it too much but I personally like the idea of Super Saiyan 4 being Super Saiyan in its truest form.
What do you think?
Well that's an interesting idea, but I don't think it holds up. For one, the idea of having to be in control, and the sort-of calm Goku seems to exhibit when in that form, seems to run the exact opposite of how Super Saiyan was described before. It was born from rage, the user risking becoming lost in it to the point of possibly destroying themselves. The idea of this being a "true" Super Saiyan form that somehow no one ever knew about just seems off to me as well. That also changed how tails were supposed to work, as their only real purpose was actually holding the glands that provided the bodily chemical that triggered the Oozaru transformation. Having it suddenly be a stamina manager would kind of be a bit random? And given the things Toriyama's said himself about Saiyan tails, I don't know if that holds up. Also, Super Saiyan 4 was actually designed by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, a character designer at Toei. Toriyama did famously do a drawing of it, but it was actually meant as a gift to the production team wishing them luck/success than anything else. it's a pretty non-Toriyama-esque design though, imo, so I'm not too surprised. But hey, that's just me. If you want to headcanon that, you absolutely can.

4. Fav character/subject that’s a bitch to draw
I love Charn, some days I'm surprised I made him, but I won't lie, his elaborate design is why I don't draw him as often as I'd like. Every time I draw him, I question how his lapels should look, or how his eyes would look at varying angles. This isn't to mention the more robotic/mecha-influenced parts of him that I haven't shown off yet.
For subjects, probably action scenes; I admittedly don't draw them a lot, because when I do, I usually find myself dissatisfied for one reason or another. "This pose is too stiff" or "that effect looks bad" or "that background could have been better", etc.
The weapon art for Make a Good Mega Man Level is a bit of both; I try to keep Mega Man accurate to the official Capcom weapon art, but also give each one a distinct pose or angle. Lot of time goes into those, trying to get the lineart, colours etc. just right.
8. What’s an old project idea that you’ve lost interest in
OK this is a bit of a cheat since it's something that was once part of something I very much have not lost interest in, but it's something I still remember even almost 10 years on. Back when I first came up with what would become The Sorceress of the Stars, my overambitious 15 year old self envisioned a game like Sonic 3 & Knuckles, with three different playable characters with their own stories and their own supporting cast. These were a kooky old scientist, a robot he made that would gradually become more humanoid over its story, and his grumpy magic-using granddaughter. That last one was just a funny afterthought.
(Incidentally this is how Charn became what he is; he was supposed to embody each of the trio's main aspects.)
I made some old comics with the three; however, after some time I realised that I was struggling for a title, what I was planning was very much unfeasible for one person, and I cared very much about the magic granddaughter's story, the robot's less so, and the scientist's even less than that. So I decided to cut those two and focus entirely on Jessica instead. Perhaps the robot at least may get revived in the future, as part of TSOTS or their own thing.
19. Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.)
This is a tricky question; I'm not sure I draw a lot of inanimate objects, and the ones I do tend to be stuff I don't think about much (or outright not like drawing). I guess maybe something like clothing and starry night skies count? Let's go with that.
25. Something your art has been compared to that you were NOT inspired by
Many people both online and IRL have told me my art reminds them of Dragon Ball Z. For the longest time, I didn't actually follow it; the most influence I drew from it was basing Jessica's boots on Android 18's. These days I have an appreciation for Toriyama's art (particularly his style around the Piccolo and Saiyan arcs), but it's still not something I consciously try to imitate.
29. Media you love, but doesn’t inspire you artistically
I think the most prominent example that comes to mind might be Seasons 1 and 2 of Star vs the Forces of Evil. I'm typically not a fan of overly-cartoony movement or expressions etc., but that first season somehow managed to make it work, and it was never dull to watch. It's honestly a crying shame that by the final season, the animation, character design, and backgrounds became so flat, stiff, dully coloured and lifeless (I swear every episode the characters do the same Family Guy-esque "bottom eyelids up, hands outstretched" pose).

hey klu! i saw the anon about dragon ball/kirby crossover thing and yeah i'm the one who made it/is making it. just giving you a heads up that the story is supposed to loosely start off as "kirby in dbz roles" but the character differences and slight story changes are intended to pile up in a major enough way to alter it significantly to the point where it becomes something unique enough by the last arcs
also, while dedede does have a yamucha-esque role in the first part, i can promise you right now he still remains a major character and well-respected to the very end of the story : >
(sorry that i didn't respond to this earlier), but im genuinely really glad to hear it! do what toriyama couldn't >:) (make all of the cast introduced initially stay relevant)

so various thoughts abt dragon ball daima bc i wanna share my opinion
looks fun and weird! which by itself makes me excited. im not particularly swayed one way or another by the "turned into kids" schtick but i do wish they looked more like kids and not like. chibified adults. also the art style isnt awful but it feels like this weird mix between og db and super which is a lil bit offputting to me. kinda wish they committed to a more 90s-esque art style
(also hysterical everyone's been clamboring for teenaged goten and trunks and after their first outing, theyve been turned back to kids. brilliant, truly)
rly feeling like this is partially a take on gt which i dont hate bc ive always thought gt suffered from "interesting idea, awful execution". if toriyama can stick the landing, i think ill be happy
i also know a lot of people seem upset we're not getting an adaptation of super's manga but the reason why is simple: toriyama doesn't want to
sure, it add a lot to the franchise if they did but dragon ball is pretty firmly rooted in its cultural status. its no longer a weekly updated manga that has to constantly prove its worth. its a cultural juggernaut! so now toriyama can go do whatever the fuck he wants and well. turning your cast of characters into kids does lend very well to his love of gags
im absolutely sure his take on it is toyotaro has the super manga in good hands and he is free to do what he wants, how he wants
(and as an artist/writer i can kinda respect it? we all hope to get to a point one day where we can make the art we want instead of what the ppl want)
and well, im sure the super manga will get adapted one day and its being kept in the back pocket for then

It’s your boy, back on my Isekai bullsh*t again! Seriously, it’s like all of my manga recommendations are based strictly on Isekai at this point. Market saturation is definitely a thing but i tend to skew fantasy over anything and just so many Isekai narratives take place in those Tolkein-esque worlds. That specific aspect of the genre has gotten so dense, there are even more sub-genres therein. My last recommend, A NEET’s Guide to the Parallel World, is an example of a newer trope to get the shine, Revenge Isekai. I have no love for those types of stories, as explained at length in that essay, but i am very fond of one of the earliest to gain traction; Video Game Isekai. This sub-genre was introduced to the Yankee audience with the introduction of Digimon way back in the Nineties. Yes, Digimon is an Isekai set in a video game world, fight me, but it wasn’t until f*cking Sword Art Online did this sub genre really take off. Online was a disappointment, though. So much potential in those first few episodes but that franchise sh*t the bed so fast, you’d think it was Amber Heard throwing a temper tantrum.
Tumblr media
One of my favorite manga/light novel narratives, Overlord, is a star of this sub-genre and has gained A LOT of shine with it’s excellent anime adaption. Land of Leadale, Death March To The Parallel World Rhapsody, How Not To Summon A Demon Lord, Rising of the Shield Hero kind of, Isekai Mokushiroku Mynoghra, No Game No Life a little bit, and KonoSuba, are all favorites, (specifically Mynoghra) and they’re all Video Game Isekai. Even Skeleton Knight in Another World, a currently airing anime that seems to have grown it’s fandom considerably, is a Video Game Isekai and i love it, too. This sub-genre, one of the first in the Isekai category, itself, has had a lot of time to build up it’s roster so there is a ton of these thing available for consumption. I have consumed just SO many of them... But I'm not here to talk about any of those, as excellent as they may be. No, i am here to cast some light on Shoukan sareta Kenja wa Isekai wo Yuku.
Tumblr media
A Sage Is Summoned to Another World, as it’s known in some circles here, in the States, follows Touya as her maneuvers a brand new world which seems to be based on the old MMORPG he played. Pandemic World Online was an incredibly popular Battle MMO where Touya Kisaragi stood as the strongest Berserker in the world. Having conquered so much of the game, Touya was forced to create a second account, a second character, just to store the massive amount of loot he has earned over his career and  it is in that form he found himself summoned. Touya was soon cast out after being spirited away as he was not a Hero the Jenerta Kingdom was looking for. Since Touya was summoned on his spare account, he took the form of his Mage character, not the OP Berserker, and started at level one. Because of this, he was cast out and left to die. However, due to that spare account holding all of the loot he collected over the years, Touya had a massive advantage. He soon began to realize this new world functioned just like Pandemic World and set out to reclaim his status as Berserker.
Tumblr media
The initial aspect which caught my attention was the art. This book is gorgeous, detailed, and has a very unique style you don’t see much in manga. The market leans heavy into the moe type of design; very cutesy and very exaggerated. I’m not mad about that but i came up on this stuff long before the moe boom of the early Aughts. My bread and butter lies with artists like Akira Toriyama, Masamune Shirow, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Yukito Kishiro, and Katsuhiro Otomo. These art styles informed my tastes as i grew older and i became disillusioned with the Moe boom almost immediately. There are some gems to be found in this means tested, passionless, art wasteland which began with the moe wave so long ago, so, for me, an artist like Tite Kubo was a godsend. I love unique, non-homogeneous, art. If you have a look, there is a very good chance I'll gravitate toward your book. Sage definitely has a look and all credit goes to Ko Kobayashi. His art is amazing and every time a chapter updates, i can’t wait to see how much life he injects into those panels. His art aside, as amazing as it is, would be nothing without a narrative and, let me tell you, this thing has a story to tell.
Tumblr media
Yoshu is not new to the Isekai genre. They’re the author of Tensei Kizoku no Isekai Boukenroku ~Jichou wo Shiranai Kamigami no Shito~ so it’s no wonder Sage has such a detailed narrative backing it. Admittedly, the plot is kind of derivative. Guy gets summoned into the game he’s playing and commences to be wildly overpowered but therein lies the rub; Sage ain’t like that. Touya was summoned with an items cheat in the form of his spatial storage being loaded with all of the spoils he received on his overpowered main account, but outside of that, Touya earns his strength. Yoshu made sure to show us the struggle, the plan, and the drive, Touya has to reach the top of his new world, just like he had in the game on which his surroundings are based. In doing so, Yoshu has create one of the richest, liveliest, lived in, wolds available in Isekai manga. I was already impressed by the art, but the world-building and character work are just as detailed. Speaking of character work, that sh*t might be the best thing about this book.
Tumblr media
Touya, himself, is an absolute peach. He’s one of the most endearing manga protagonists I've come across in my near four decades on this planet. I just love how earnest this cat is as he maneuvers this new, yet, familiar world. The supporting cast, his main party, is just as lovable. Charlotte and Arturia, a princess and her guard, are just as lovable. They join the party early on and become the catalyst for the first major conflict of the book. Nathalia the Twilight Sage is also fun and easily the most relaxed of the bunch. She’s been with Touya the longest, has a debilitating sweet tooth, and was already a legend before becoming his companion. However, my personal favorite character that has actually been part of the narrative for some time, is the house spirit, Ferris. Watching this character literally grow, has been a joy. She is sweet, kind, prone to fits of adorable jealousy, and probably a yandere. There have been hints of something more sinister just under the surface and i look forward to seeing that develop. Also, you can't forget the heart of this team, the Battle-Horse, Kokuyou. The character work doesn’t just stop there. NPCs, antagonists adventurers; Literally everyone in this world, feels alive. One of these adventurers, Lumina, is probably my second favorite character of the book so far. She’s the strongest adventurer we’ve seen to date and has a surprising amount of depth for someone we only spend a handful of chapters with. I hope she returns because she was absolutely awesome for what we were given.
Tumblr media
This one got a way from me, for sure, but i just enjoy A Sage Is Summoned to Another World so much. I could sing this thing's praises for days. It’s a fantastic story being told with a detail rare among the manga offerings of today. That, coupled with the amazing artwork on the page, makes for an absolute masterpiece. Sage is one of my favorite manga being serialized today and i immediately consume whenever chapters update. So far, there are twenty-nine chapters available but, admittedly, this book updates sporadically. If i had one problem with Sage, it’s definitely the fact you can go months between new chapter t read. That’s not the title’s fault in of itself, that’s more an issue with the scanlation houses uploading them. You do, however, usually get a chunk to read at once, so if there’s one, you’ll usually see two or three more relatively soon. That drought in between chunks, though, can last months. Actually months. That aside, A Sage Is Summoned to Another World is definitely worth the read. If you have the patience to weather some pretty egregious downtime between updates, definitely check this story out. It’s a true gem that shine real bright among the Isekai genre.
