How often/When do you think Cas watched Dean without him (and us) knowing?

Like I just rewatched episode 4x15 "Death Takes a Holiday" and it made me think about that because when Cas tells Dean:

Just before this scene there is this dialogue:

CASTIEL: What just happened? You and Sam just saved a seal. We captured Alastair. Dean, this was a victory.

DEAN: Well, no thanks to you.

CASTIEL: What makes you say that?

DEAN: You were here the whole time?

CASTIEL: Enough of it.

This means Cas watched them doing all the work without Dean (and us and Sam) knowing, at least until he says it. And of course there is also episode 6x20 "The Man Who Would Be King" with the famous scene of Cas looking at Dean in Bobby's kitchen saying that the worst part was...

Also, every time he watched him sleep (4x03 "In The Beginning" Cas sitting on the edge of the bed / 8x10 "Torn and Frayed" Dean startling on the couch because he sensed a presence and spilling his beer / 8x08 "Hunteri Heroici" Cas suggesting the idea of watching over them while they sleep).

But those scene are the only time Cas watched Dean without him knowing THAT WE KNOW OF. What about those we don't? Do you have some ideas of when this could have happened again? A scene in particular? Let me know because I want my mind to be blown.

Wait, is there a fic about that? I'm sure there is. Like Cas watching over Dean across seasons (at least until he can't fly anymore. But, wait, can he hide from people without his wings? That's a real question. Like can he spy on people without being seen once his wings are broken?) It could be a fic with Cas's POV and dialogues when Dean surprises him. Wait, I need to stop. I'm just writing my thoughts as they come to me but this post wasn't supposed to be this long. Sorry...

this week, i saw a tree crushed house, fallie hiding tiny zombies in finn's hair, a dead man's dungeon master's manual, a mandala sketched in mud, a deck of colorful cairns, a pretty girl sleeping in my bed

i am not afraid of the cold or the little discomforts from walking wet in the chilly wind and still there is always a moment in winter when the time between rambles grows. it feels good and right but bears careful watching

8x10: Sam sits wistfully on a bench watching a couple walk past, they are holding hands and huddled under an umbrella. As another person crosses in front of him, Castiel appears sitting next to him on the bench looking pensive. Sam jumps in his seat when he notices Castiel, who pauses for a moment before saying, “Watching humanity... it never gets old, does it?”

12x23: Castiel comes through the portal to another world, breathing heavily, and Sam smiles in relief saying, “Cas!” Castiel turns to him before he is suddenly stabbed through the heart, then his eyes and mouth pour out a bright white light. Sam is shocked, and then looks terrified to see Lucifer standing behind Castiel as his body falls to the ground.

13x01: Sam stands with Jack in front of the pyre for Castiel and Kelly. Sam looks near tears, saying, “You hope they’re somewhere without... sadness. 15x19: Dean stands in front of Sam and Jack in an empty street with several abandoned vehicles. He tells them, “Cas is gone.” Jack looks down slightly, shaking his head looking upset and lost. Sam looks away from Dean and then to Jack with short breaths, then says, “This can’t be happening.” He turns around, pulling his phone from his pockets and walking away.

15x20: At a pie festival, Sam watches a couple with two kids walk by holding hands. After, he tells Dean, “I’m not ‘Sad Sam.’” Dean raises his eyebrows, skeptically, and Sam hesitates. He explains, “I’m just... I’m thinking about Cas. Jack. If they could be here.” Dean nods and looks off as he finishes speaking.

Supernatural season 8 episode 10 Torn and Frayed my greatest enemy what in gods name did I just watch. What is this angel brainwashing storyline. From a shallow perspective, I am intrigued, I will admit (Ik I just like psychological manipulation and I want to see where this goes from a baseline entertainment level). From a perspective that actually values the narrative: why. WHY does this show constantly kill off its interesting side characters?????? I was genuinely invested in Samandriel. All this poor guy wanted was to keep an eye out for the Word of God and find out what happened to Castiel and then he ends up getting screws jammed into his brain for WEEKS on end. I mean the writers clearly wanted him to be sympathised with - they literally put him in the body of like a 19 year old fast food worker. He was in so much pain he reenacted that burning bush bible story and defaulted to factory settings. Then BAM stabbed by Castiel and he's dead now, sorry. Oh you were invested in him? wanted to see some more angel dynamics and politics, oh oops he's dead now. And I felt like it didn't even have a purpose?? If anything it would've made MORE sense for Castiel to be like girl what in the world nah uh I've already had my free will rebel against heaven arc, like we've established something whacky is going on with him after purgatory, brainwashing yadda yadda, then wouldn't it make more sense for this to be the turning point?? Castiel goes ... hold on. And dOesn't kill Samandriel. We still get our lead for looking into freaky angle brainwashing and we don't need to dispose of actually interesting side characters that would give the plot some breathing room from sam and dean's constant squabbling.

Don't even get me started on that part... There was just so much in this episode that had me like ?????????!!!!!!! First off why does the narrative seem to treat Dean literally preemptively changing Amelia's number on Sam's phone to his burner phone number as haha he really pulled a quick one on Sam hehe that was only a little bit wrong. That's literally insane behavior?? To not trust Sam on such a fundamental level that he literally redirects anything Sam would possibly send to her (literally the only person aside from Dean that Sam would possibly message) to himself, effectively completely cutting him off from her weeks ago. For what?? As a back up plan to use as a sucker punch when it is so convenient? Do I understand why he was angry Sam wasn't listening to him about Benny? yes, obviously, but this was before any of this had even happened?? This is like so emotionally manipulative idek where to start..

Also can't help but notice that every conversation Sam and Dean have about Benny ignores the elephant in the room which is THIS IS A DIRECT PARALLEL TO EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED WITH RUBY!! Very obviously actually. Like I just do not get why Dean is over here like ugh Sam really just doesn't understand my close trauma bond with Benny why can't he just get that Benny is different from other Vampires - MY GUY??? YOU WERE THE ONE THAT TAUGHT HIM THIS??? Dean hammered this shit into Sam's head about how Sam is stupid and soft for trusting Ruby and Amy, and then things go sideways with Ruby and he's like see this is exactly what happens when you choose a demon over your brother, and then he pre-emptively kills Amy when Sam begged him not to and then lies about it. Hell, even back in season 2 Sam was the one who suggested that these vampires they were hunting weren't actually bad guys who deserved to be slaughtered for existing and Dean punches him for it. Its just so frustrating to watch all this drama and misunderstanding erupt from this episode after episode when it would be easy to just .... talk ... about .... it .... Or at least TRY to understand each other. Like there's a difference between Sam and Dean not talking about things because they are emotionally repressed and will implode at the sight of vulnerability, and the writing of this show just being evasive for soap opera purposes.

And then the ending... dear god. Dean breaking up with Benny over phone call?? Just ditching him when he needs help. Amelia showing up to the empty motel room. Oh my god. Like the way the ending is framed and cut makes it very obvious this is Sam and Dean choosing each other over any external life they could be living. It's giving toxic codependent family dynamics. Speaking of I will NEVER get over how Sam simply wanting to live the life he wants to live is always treated as the original sin. The thing Dean makes snide side comments about the most in this season is not how Sam didn't look for him in purgatory, or how Sam didn't look for Kevin either; which are the things I think that although I still can sympathise with Sam about why he didn't do them, are things that Dean would be understandably angry and frustrated about - no the thing that Dean most brings up is how Sam quit hunting for the year... yes the thing that Dean has the LEAST business being angry about. God forbid Sam try to live his life. God forbid he try to heal after being tortured in the Cage for centuries and just recently coming out of a months long psychotic break. ooo yes Sam that was so selfish of you to take some time off while people were dying... you know since you are the defender of the universe and every person that dies ever in planet earth is your fault yeah how could you Sam.

Anyway. As you can probably tell, I have literally come fresh off watching this episode for the first time and had some thoughts and feelings that could only be expressed in the purest form of language - a tumblr rant post.

Some of this mayhaps be more emotionally driven than logically and for that I am sorry, I promise I will see reason soon after my brain is left to pick this episode apart in any spare moment.

(Okay, I apologize in advance, but it’s Destiel Day so there’s only so painless Tumblr can be right now anyway. @typicalopposite, my queue seems to suggest that I’m living up to that title you’ve given me: Angst Queen is in the house)

Anyway, I was writing a post — available here — about the fight amongst Dean, Cas, and Alastair and, in the process, I thought of “On the Head of a Pin” (as you do). In particular, I thought of the scene where Dean’s in the hospital bed and Cas is sitting behind him. This one:

And that was fine and normal and all until I thought about it a bit more because this is not a one time thing. This is a very, very regular thing.

You’ve got s04e03 “In the Beginning” when Dean wakes up to find Cas sitting next to him.

You’ve got s08e07 “Torn and Frayed”, where Cas is watching over Dean (and, judging by his “Damn it, Cas! How many times I got to tell you – it's just creepy!”, this is not a one-time thing):

You’ve got s08e08 “Hunteri Heroici” with the famous:

And, for some honorable mentions: Cas actually going into Dean’s dream in s04e20 “The Rapture”; Cas watching over Dean long-distance enough to pull him away from Zachariah in s05e04 “The End”; and Cas watching as Dean rakes leaves in s06e20 “The Man Who Would Be King”.

This would all be really sweet if it weren’t for the fact that my brain then reminded me of the episode s08e16 when Dean prays to Cas and very pointedly looks towards the chair by his bed to see if Cas showed up and is disappointed to see he hasn’t.

Cas spends so much time there --- in that chair specifically --- that Dean expected him to be there. If Cas was going to be anywhere in that room, it was in that chair, and he wasn’t there.

Please help.
