I read a post recently discussing how great Tamora Pierce's Winding Circle Temple from her Circle of Magic series is both as a school and a home for the people who live there and oh boy did it give me Jedi vibes like nothing else. I'm going to straight-up admit I was more of a Tortall universe fan as a kid than an Emelan universe fan, but I recently went back and re-read all of the Circle of Magic books as an adult, so I still feel qualified to discuss this a little.
The post discusses how a religious Temple is actually such an interesting place to use as a location for the main characters' adoptive home, with the little routines and philosophies and general lifestyle woven into the worldbuilding. It's not just a school, although it very much is a place of learning, but it's a HOME. There are people who just come to the Temple to learn, of course, but a large amount of the people who are learning there also consider the Temple their home. And it's this community built of people who have CHOSEN to be there and/or have been cast out of other societies for things they cannot choose or change about themselves.
While Star Wars has not truly delved into what life is like in the Jedi temple (not in high mainstream canon at least), I've seen plenty of fans coming up with detailed headcanons about what life would be like in the Temple, what kind of holidays the Jedi might recognize or practice, what the classes would look like, what kind of food they'd eat and the routines and traditions surrounding their food. Because the Jedi Temple isn't just a boarding school, it isn't a university, it's a HOME and a community made up of people who have chosen to be here above anywhere else and those who were cast out of their own societies. The people who live there consider each other a family.
The adults at the Winding Circle temple aren't PERFECT, but they are genuinely good teachers who take care of the children they have adopted. They're responsible and loving simultaneously.
The Jedi all encourage their children to question things, to tease each other, to take responsibility for their own emotions and their own actions, but also simply to enjoy the moment as it happens rather than getting caught up in thoughts about the future or the past. They love each other and are perfectly capable of being playful, but they also ensure their children learn discipline and good mental health, as well.
Each main child character is raised relatively communally by the Temple, capable of being taught by just about anyone, but are also being housed with two specific Masters and then each taught their specific magical abilities by one teacher who has more of a specialty in their type of magic. We see a similar set-up among the Jedi who have the children brought up by Masters who are specifically assigned to taking care of their physical needs, but are eventually matched up to a Master who can help them hone their SPECIFIC skills, and all the while they are being raised pretty communally with access to every Jedi Knight, Master, and Padawan in the Order who might have something to teach them. The Winding Circle Temple takes a very adoptive/found family approach to their relationships, same as the Jedi do.
What's interesting is I don't know if I've ever seen as much discourse about Tamora Pierce setting her series at a religious Temple as I've seen aimed at the Jedi. I don't know that ANYBODY who's read Pierce's works in the Circle of Magic series would claim these characters not to be a family or that Winding Circle isn't their home or that it was repressive and abusive because they asked their members to take responsibility for their actions, especially when they have such large amounts of power at their disposal.

tortall found family for WIP Wednesday please
Roger of Conte had sometimes thought, idly and not of what might have been had his cousin been a girl. A half Bazhir Princess - he has no doubt that she would be a perfect one, Jon, despite questions over his blood is an irritatingly perfect prince. She would have been able to be his, unquestionably. Roger looks at his cousin and vows that he will make this Jon his, unquestionably.  Jon wakes up sometimes, from nightmares of what Roger wanted to do to him. Numair wakes up from nightmares of what Ozorne wished to do him and they are mirrors - Jon and Numair on the same but different sides.  “When I realised that he’d chosen Alex because he looked like me, a little I threw up.”  Jon admits it, his head in Thayet’s lap and his arms around Numair and they are both free but the shadows remain.
Featuring biracial Jon, my headcanons about exactly how awful and creepy Roger of Conte was and the poly/found family/friendship feels that is Thayet, Jon, Numair, Daine, Alanna, George, Buri, Raoul and probably Gary and his wife. Also my Thayet/Jon love.

Fandom-Focused Introduction
About Me
Pronouns: They/them, followed by ve/vir or xe/xir, followed by any other neopronouns. Just avoid he/she/it and you’re good.
Identifiers: Queer, non-binary trans / agender, gray-ace / demisexual, ADHD, polyamorous, Pagan, disabled (hEDS / Ehlers Danlos hypermobile type, POTs / postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, PTSD, maybe Sjogren's according to rheumatologist, possible MCAS / mast cell activation syndrome), kinky (feral/primal top-leaning switch)
Other demographics: 37 years old (mid 1980’s in case I forget to update this in a few years), USA, white

Active Fandoms
Fandoms I’m actively engaged in, participating in, reading and writing in, obsessing over, etc.
Arthurian literature: New interest! New hyperfocus! Reading all the original material and some new stuff too. It’s ridiculous, Arthurian myth is basically just a centuries-long accumulation of fanfic and OC’s that tons of people have collectively headcanoned and called it canon. Wild. Got into it thanks to Heather Dale’s Arthurian songs that made me start writing a fix-it fic to Trial of Lancelot where Lancelot, Arthur, and Guenivere are in a polyamorous triad. Because love triangles where everyone actually cares about each other and so polyamory would fix it easily drive me mad. But then I couldn’t figure out the story ending because I didn’t know enough about Arthurian literature, shelved it for almost a decade, then recently pulled it out, dove into Arthurian lore, and got hooked. Gonna be posting a lot about it. I think I’ve followed all the Arthuriana accounts I could find…
Genshin Impact: I haven’t been this into a piece of media in years. Favorite characters are Alhaitham, Xiao, Zhongli, Ningguang, Yae Miko, Ayato, Dehya, Baizhu (who is a whole damn gender, as is Alhaitham), Dottore (favorite villain to hate, great character, terrible person). My Traveler is Aether and I main Itto (who I adore, though he doesn’t make the top 10 list of favorite characters).
Inactive Fandoms
Fandoms I’ve been involved with in the past but not currently. Probably wouldn’t take much to make them active again, but they’re currently on the back burner.
Dragon Age (Inquisition especially, don’t care for Origins, still working on playing through DA2)
Sherlock Holmes (every iteration I’ve encountered, but BBC Sherlock’s first two seasons especially)
Redwall (my entire adolescence, my first roleplaying experience, and setting of the longest story I’ve ever written)
Early Marvel MCU (mostly the original Avengers crew + Loki, all the trauma and found family stuff)
World of Darkness (Mage: the Ascension particularly)
Flight Rising
Casual Fandoms
The honorable mentions. Fandoms I haven’t actively participated in but which hold a special place in my heart.
Terre d’Ange (Kushiel novels by Jacqueline Carey)
Valdemar (Mercedes Lackey)
Tortall (Tamora Pierce)
Feral Souls trilogy (Erica Woods)
Farscape
Legend of Zelda (Ocarina of Time had a major impact on my developmental preteen brain, though Twilight Princess is my favorite)
Final Fantasy (7 and 10 especially)

@dutyworn asked:
3, 4, 5, 8 for questions for the mun meme
Tumblr media
3. whose writing has impacted your writing style the most? (you can choose anyone! famous writer or not.)
Honestly? I can't think of anyone, because I've been writing for so long that I was never really... influenced by it? I think a lot of early, heavily creative works influenced me to some degree (I read Harry Potter when I was young, for example). I think maybe what influenced my choice of fandoms was Tamora Pierce & her Song of the Lioness quartet and Protector of the Small quartet (set in her Tortall universe) which really, really drove my love for fantasy universes. As for sci-fi universes, Enchantress From The Stars by Sylvia Engdahl definitely did that because it was kind of both.
4. which muse of yours is your all time favorite? if you stopped writing them: why?
I don't know if I have an "all time" favourite, but I always go through periods where I miss writing Sakura Haruno from Naruto. She was one of the first muses I really went in-depth with and was attached to, and the reason I quit is because the fandom has just become this toxic cesspool. She has a canon ship, and that canon ship happens to be my favourite, but there is a lot of misinformation surrounding her ship partner and the nature of their relationship (claiming it's toxic, when it's really not, along with boatloads of misogyny lauded at Sakura herself by generally male fans) and just a lot of wild, unrepentant hate for her character. It's present in the RP fandom as well from what I've noticed & I just grew tired of dealing with it. I want to write her, but I think if I bring her back for a muse, it'll just be with one particular partner that I know writes her other (canonical) ship half in the series, and I'm pretty sure in posting this they'll know who they are because I've mentioned it LMAO. I may also just write her with close friends & nothing else if I do write her again, and she'll be very plot-focused.
5. is there a muse you really want to try? if yes: what’s stopping you?
Not at the moment, really; a few months ago I would have said that was Miranda, although I've now gone ahead with that. What was stopping me before was that I just hadn't really researched her character much if at all, and I'm usually someone who only focuses on a few characters from a fandom in order to write them (as I generally get very invested in them & post quite a few headcanons about them). I do think I need to work on expanding Miranda a fair bit, though.
8. do you expect your answered memes/asks to be turned into threads? regardless of answer, what’s your reasoning?
Generally speaking... yes. I post them in a new post for this reason, & I've noticed over the years (particularly recently) that a lot of muns seem to not want to plot out dynamics or stick with ideas. They either don't reach out, don't contribute anything if you reach out, & that becomes kind of disappointing. It's rare to find anyone who actually wants to write a big, overarching plot idea any more and stick with it (with some regularity to replies) because there's this... need for instant-gratification in the RPC. So generally, yes--I do expect that to be the case, because they're great icebreakers. I don't mind if at some point we roll with the idea and make a plot out of it (in fact I love those ideas) but I really don't like putting out a bunch of writing for it not to go somewhere (unless the meme itself is intended that way, because some certainly are).

I have always thought it was odd that Thayet and Jonathan had so many children. The whole situation seems ripe for a civil war or rebellion several generations down the line! Sure, maybe they were all needed for alliances, or the royal couple wanted plenty of spares after the precariousness of Jonathan being an only child, but I have another theory. What if Thayet wanted one child for the throne of Sarain?
Thayet is a child of both ethnic/social groups of Sarain: the lowlanders and the K'miri. She flees Sarain in fear of her life and comes to Tortall, where she and Jonathan form an affection. Jonathan realizes that she is an appropriate and worthy royal partner; Thayet concludes that being the Tortallan queen is a role she can perform well and will be a meaningful use of her talents.
However, I refuse to believe that someone as loyal and with such a strong sense of duty as Thayet would abandon her people and wholly devote herself to Tortall. By the Wild Magic series we see that Tortall (no doubt due to Thayet's influence) has opened its doors to K'miri refugees. I think it is entirely possible that Thayet would have made one of her conditions for marrying Jon and sacrificing any hope of returning to Sarain that their children would be raised with an awareness of their mother's heritage and that one would ultimately be sent to Sarain to consolidate power and end the brutal civil war.
I don't mean that Tortall would send a conquering army to Sarain. There is a great deal the Tortallan throne can do without supplying an army. They can provide money for mercenaries, train any K'miri refugees in Tortall who want to return to their homeland, arrange diplomatic connections in the other Eastern lands, back loans made by banks to the prospective Saren government, send knights and other expert advisors, etc. I would think that the countries bordering Sarain would also have a vested interest in ending the war due to the spillover of violence and refugees into those countries and would provide assistance.
In addition, this is not a case of Tortall conquering Sarain! Thayet is twice-over of royal blood; her parent's union was intended to produce a royal that both the lowlanders and the K'miri could accept. (In fact, much like Dove in the Copper Isles. A parallel...?) She is a rightful claimant to the Saren throne, and so is her child.
This would also have the effect of keeping one of the Tortallan royal children (let's be real, probably one of the princes) busy and away from any resentment or rebellious tendencies. Once a stable government is formed in Sarain, there could be strong diplomatic ties between the two countries. There are conveniently several countries between Tortall and Sarain, which makes it less likely that a future Sarain would attack Tortall to claim that throne.
Anyway, this is my explanation for Thayet's agreement to be the Tortallan queen despite her Saren loyalties and one reason for their six royal children. I haven't read Lioness Rampant in many years, so I might be misremembering some of the details. I also haven't kept up with Word of God or extracanon stuff. But I find this headcanon satisfying lol.

Tortall Headcanon
When Alanna finds the doll of Queen Lianne, it is wearing a “duplicate of the Queen’s favorite gown.” We know the use of miniatures in magic is common enough that everyone is angered, horrified and otherwise recoiling in fear the second Alanna shows the court the miniatures. Which means that Roger would have needed to do the work to create them entirely in secret. Sculpting the figure out of wax would be easy enough, as would hypnotizing a guard or a maid to give him the hair from the Queen’s hairbrush. But the dress? No way someone would have quietly made that for him. And we know that a Queen’s dress can take days for a skilled seamstress to complete. And making a tiny version of something is absolutely painstaking and usually incredibly difficult because everything is so damn small.
Which means that Grand Duke Roger of Conte, most powerful mage in the realm, spent hours fussing over a tiny doll dress. Probably while Alex watched.

Okay so, I’ve been thinking a bit about the Protector of the Small Quartet again, (Love that series, so much.) And one thing I want to know is why aren’t there more headcanons of Raoul adopting Kel? I mean we all know she’s basically a daughter to him, and most people think she’ll become his successor in the King’s Own, if not Training Master. And it’s not like there isn’t already a precedent set for it in the world of Tortall, what with Myles adopting Alanna and all. It just makes sense to me, Raoul is lord of two fiefs, Goldenlake and Malorie’s Peak. Malorie’s Peak was his original fiefdom, and he was given Goldenlake later for services to the crown. He doesn’t have any children of his own to inherit them, he could have family who will inherit Malorie’s Peak, but it could be really cool if he adopted Kel and made her heir to his position as Lord of Goldenlake. I know he and Buri and now married, but do you really see them having any kids at this point in time? They have the Own and the Riders for that. And on Kel’s side she’s the youngest of seven I think it was, with little money etc, and little chance of being in the line of succession. She has the possibility of being given lands by the Crown due to her heroism, but I don’t see that happening any time soon, at least not til Roald is King. The only possible argument against it would be that Kel loves her parents and they love her, but honestly at the point in time they are at I think Kel is closer with Raoul than her parents, just through distance. Raoul was one of the first to fully get her to loosen up, and fully accept her instantly. I mean he had had practise with Alanna, and I am not at all saying Neal didn’t do anything, but Kel is comfortable with him, the way she is with few others, and willing to drop her Yamani mask, and tease and joke with him. Kel’s parents are good people, I fully believe that knowing they would struggle to continue providing for her and knowing that she would still also be their daughter they would be willing to share her, and allow her to further her position in life and influence so many more. Thus why I believe Raoul should either have adopted Kel, or have plans too.

Listen the headcanon I will hold on to always is that Ozorne never stopped loving Arram/Numair throughout all the books (Immortals included) and it’s just, there was so much love there. And then obviously it went to possessive controlling hell (but still love) but what makes it hurt is the love did not start that way and did not have to end that way.
I wonder if Numair could ever mourn the Ozorne he had loved. I wonder if he’d already mourned him well before Emperor Ozorne died.
And Ozorne dying at the hands of Daine and Tortall who he feels has taken everything from him when it was he himself who lost the love he loved the most (to steal from Christina Perri’s song Jar of Hearts).
Ozorne, who did not know that it was not the man he still loves in front of him in prison because he cannot see him.
