Ursula Bonemaker, my THIRD barbarian pc because I guess my preferred play style is 'run up to thing and hit it really hard several times until it is destroyed'. She is a hill dwarf (though her perspective here doesn't make it obvious) who is a bear totem, hence her whole bear theme.

Representation vs. Appropriation
When I made a tumblr blog post pointing out that the character creator in Baldur’s Gate 3 included culturally appropriative face tattoos, lot of people decided to bend over backwards to defend this. Excuses I have found while giving my blocking finger a routine work-out thus far have ranged from “Larian Studios is European so they don’t know any better”, to a classic “it’s just a fantasy game, stop being so oversensitive”. But by far the most common poor reaction was, “what if it’s representation?”
Now, two Māori people were quick to jump into this post and say themselves, clear as day, that this is not representation, it is appropriation. That should be enough right there—settlers do not get to decide what is and isn’t representation for us Indigenous folks. But white people not listening to Indigenous voices is nothing new. I’ve been forced to learn that if you want to be taken seriously by settlers, your best chance is to coddle and appease their poor little delicate feelings. So, let’s pretend for a second that these “what if it’s representation?” questions are actually asked in good, albeit ignorant faith, and not just a pathetic gut-reaction to avoid having to critically think about a beloved game. (Which, by the way, I still overall adore myself, mind you.) Let’s pretend they actually want an answer, and give it to them.
It’s very easy to list the examples of positive Indigenous representation I’ve personally experienced in video games, not made by Indigenous folks ourselves, because there’s only one game that comes to mind: Assassin’s Creed 3. The protagonist of AC3 is Ratonhnhaké:ton of the Kanienʼkehá꞉ka people. Ubisoft is a terrible company for other reasons, but they did one thing right in the development of this game: They hired a cultural consultant, Thomas Deer. Deer was able to guide them through avoiding offensiveness and stereotypes, and include proper cultural touchstones that Indigenous players, especially Mohawk players, would want to see. For example, Ubisoft originally wanted to include sacred ceremonial masks in the game, but Deer told them that depictions of these masks would be taboo. He also helped them choose what clothing and jewellery was authentic to the Nation. This, among much more, helped create a truly representative experience. What makes it representation is that it features an Indigenous character in a positive way, without crossing lines into what should not be touched by outsiders. But had Ubisoft decided to ignore Deer’s consultation and go ahead with using those sacred masks… that would have been cultural appropriation.
Cultural appropriation is taking a closed cultural practice and using it yourself, despite not belonging to the culture it comes from. The key word there is closed, as in, something not for outsiders to touch. Eating frybread is not cultural appropriation, because it’s something freely shared by Natives to others. But wearing a fake headdress to your local musical festival is cultural appropriation, because headdresses are sacred regalia not freely shared by Natives to others. It really is that simple: just listen to boundaries set by the People.
“But my fake headdress is just clothing.” “But a fake kakiniit is just ink.” “But my fake totem pole is just decoration.” Except not, and the very fact that you have no respect for the history and meaning behind these things is the perfect example as to why they are not for you. But being told something isn’t for them has always been a hard a pill for settlers to swallow.
The phrase “nothing about us without us” is often used when advocating for rights and respect of minorities. It was first brought into English vocabulary by South Africa’s disability activism in the 1990’s, and has since been adapted across the world as a slogan to mean uplifting voices of the people you claim to want to help, instead of speaking over them. I personally first heard it through EDIRA work (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Reconciliation and Accessibility) at my job, and I feel like it can be applied in many different ways, this being one of them. The best representation comes from listening to the people you want to represent. Had Larian done that, they would have known that imitating those tattoos was off limits. But since they didn’t, they took what wasn’t theirs to take. And that’s appropriation.

Tumblr media
Carlos was getting ready for a relaxing Saturday when he heard a knock at the door of his studio apartment. When he answered he was surprised to find no one there but there was a wall packed waiting for him. He didn’t remember ordering anything but he picked up the a package addressed to him and took it inside. Unwrapped the small parcel he was surprised to find a rather interesting bearish totem. The statue was hairy. But on further inspection found that it was a man with a hefty stomach. What an odd thing to receive. He didn’t think to much on it and just left it on his counter. When he turned away from the toren he didn’t see the eyes glow red.
Tumblr media
Carlos went back to getting ready for the day. Forgetting about the figurine they was delivered to him. Later that day when he was running errands he felt bloated and couldn’t figure out why. His strict direct and supplements he took ensures he would never get like that and would always show his abs on perfect display. He found himself breaking out in sweat throughout the day for no reason. He wants ruses to this being outside of the gym. He always tried to remain as perfectly attractive as possible.
Back at his apartment he took off his shirt and gasped as he didn’t see the prized abs he had worked for all those years. Instead he seen a slight pudge here his stomach was sticking out slightly. But what was even worse was the happy trail that was forming up the center of it. And it looked as if it was spreading outwards. Carlos screamed out stripping off more of his clothes only to be shocked to see more hair that was growing on his body in places he didn’t even know yet.
He was rushing through the kitchen now. Trying to find a vitamin. Something that could take the bloating away. And that’s when the figurine caught his attention. Instantly his stomach groaning and pulsated on it own. Painfully feeling as if he was inflating as his stomach poked outward even more. Now leaving him with a thick jock gut. “What the hell is going on!” He screamed and when he looked at the figurine again. He was horrified. Gone was the gut on the small figure. Replacing it was a set of strong abs.
Tumblr media
And to his shock. Somehow the small man looked less hairy. Running to bathroom to see what just happen he could feel his stomach leading the way. Turning on the light he was greeting with a reflection he wasnt sure was his own. A 5 o clock shadow was forming on his face while his eye brows were getting thicker and hairier. His chest had puffed up slightly as well as his arms and he could see shoulder hair coming in thick and it looked like it was going to connect with his back. And could it be possible…he was shorter ?
Tumblr media
Tattoos were appearing on his body and Carlos couldn’t figure out what was happening. He was panicking with the changes that were happening. Each moment that passed another change happens. He would hairier at the place he scratched. He sneezed abs his stomach got bigger. He was sweating so much now with all the hair that was growing across his body and his own feet began to itch as hair began to grow across them. He got shorter by the minute becoming the perfect size of a fireplug thick man.
Tumblr media
It wasn’t long before his hair fell out. Making him bald but rush only seemed to make his beard kick into high gear and get even bushier on his face. Soon he was unrecognizable from the man he once was. What was left was a whole new man. One that looked strong lying similar to the figurine that was left at his door.
Tumblr media
Pouring sweat he had to make this stop. He needed to figure out how to make his body stop changing into this hairy musky monster. His nose burned with the smell of sweat and Bo. When he walked about his apartment it sounds like wet feet slapping the floor from the sweaty foot prints he was leaving behind.
He looked back at the figurine. And couldn’t make sense of what he was seeing. Long gone was the hairy man. Now was stood there was a figure that looked so much like the body he woke up with this morning. Picking it up he was shocked by the amount of detail that was in it. It looked exactly like him!
Tumblr media
At that moment the door bell rang. Startled not wanting t anyone to see what he looked like he momentarily lost his grip. Dropping his life like figure to floor. Where is shattered to priced before him. A dense smoke erupted from the figure. Enveloped his body and dissipated. When the smoke was gone, he was still in the bearish body he had been transformed into. And somehow, he knew that the breaking of figure made this change permanent.

Pomme's paranoïa
Because aparently I can't stop talking about this little egg. I wanted to touch this subject because it is something CRUCIAL to her character, and from what I've seen Richas, in his letter to Forever, has actually talked about that and how he is worried for her.
I want to talk here about WHERE that paranoïa might come from idea by idea (more in depth than my post about Pomme as a whole) :
Bobby died THE DAY after her arrival, that probably didn't help. That also caused a startle in everyone on the island making everyone a lot more paranoïd that they already were at Pomme's arrival, she then had the realization that life was EXTREMELY dangerous and limited on the island VERY early on, in a way a bit similar to Richas if we think about it, though Richas experienced it and so processed it wildly diferently, she got a dreadful suspense ; when is it coming to me ? To the others ? Because that's the thing, she is not as scared of losing her lives as she is scared of losing the others and the others losing her.
Not long after Dapper lost his first life to the code, that not only added to the already constant background aprehension, but that also made her the LAST egg with two lives, and from now on, everytime people talked about her was about how she was the next target of the code.
And then she WAS : Targeted by the code next to Ninho after everyone was worried of the tweet from Quackity Studios, and after she was saved THREE times from the codes she saw the people she cared about turn against each other because she had been not careful (Her french dads becoming suspicious of Forever, and therefore of Baghera.) (she was in fact "mind controlled" to come outside but from her POV it was still her fault.) From now on SHE CANNO'T let her guard down, this is both too dangerous for her and the people she loves.
A bit later was the attack that was then considered not canon by the admins because the attack was WAY too powerful : It broke a lot of totems at once and broke all of her armor. Though her death was not considered canon by the admins at first, Pomme (and the admin) played it as actually existing, not as a nightmare, not as non existant, but as an actual event she was saved from by someone or something : She talks about it from time to time, she truly died a bit that day.
(a little quote from that event from her diary because it's Heartbreaking)
"The pain was excruciating. It pierced my body, and with each hit, I felt the life leave my body a little more. The noise of the totems was deafening, the pain prevented me from running to escape. Just a few seconds later, I felt intense pain, even more intense than the previous blows. He had just finished me off. I no longer saw anything, I no longer felt anything. The pain had vanished in an instant. It was cold, I was scared. [...] While I was sleeping. something strange happened. As if the missing part of my soul was repairing itself. When I woke up, I no longer had any pain anywhere. But I'm still scared, more scared than ever. I'm terrified. [...] I never want to suffer so much again. I never want anyone to suffer so much again. I have no other choice; I have to get stronger. I'm going to have to live with this fear from now on, so I might as well put it to good use."
She then starts to actually show her paranoïa in a lot of aspects of her personality :
She is INCREDIBLY quick at trading her butterfly wings for her chestplate at any potential danger. She has also shown multiple times and SAID on her sign that her inventory hotbar is the most paranoïd thing ever : Filled with totems, her weapons, regeneration 2 splash potions (that are also very likely refilled with the backpack upgrade knowing her parents)
She, after learning the codes could imperssionate them now, immediatly figured out a code to make sure she was truly herself.
The day after ElQuackity was exploded by BBH and Max and that he threatened them, Pomme asked Baghera to build another safe room 200k away from spawn as she was not feeling safe in Ninho anymore.
One other interesting thing : She is not just the only egg with two lives, she is the egg that survived the LONGEST with two lives. And two things comes out of that : The fear of losing her first life because it would cause suffering to her AND her loved ones, but ironically also that SHE would be the one that could sacrifice a life to one of her siblings, she would feel terrible if one of her siblings died instead of her "simply" losing a life and she did nothing because she was scared.
A fun (not fun) little fact is that recently this paranoïa for the other's safety has started to transform into anger : She was first scared of ElQuackity, but the second she learned that Dapper was captured by him, she was FURIOUS, Baghera had to tell her multiple times to not go after ElQuackity, and though she is most of the time very empathetic of someone's situation, she has only expressed disgust and hate towards ElQuackity since then, talking multiple times how much she wants to kill him herself. (if that's how she loses her first life : dying trying to kill ElQuackity... I don't what I would do (probably cry))
I could probably find 100 more things to say but I'm writing that in the middle of doing something else and I'm getting a headache so I'll stop there. If you can't tell this was just an excuse to talk about the egg of all time. Let's finish by the quote (that I really like) that crowns her wiki page :
"J'ai beaucoup de questions mais je suis pas sûre de vouloir connaître les réponses"
"I have many questions but I'm not sure I want to know the answers"

Kizazi Moto review
Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire is an anthology of animated shorts from studios all over Africa, with the theme of afrofuturism and science fantasy (mixing frequently indigenous spiritual beliefs with the tech, and many shorts are actually about gods or spiritual beings). It's a shame that the project is attached to Disney, because this is one of the best anthologies I've seen in a long while.
So let's review the individual shorts.
Herderboy
By Uganda's Raymond Malinga, this portrays the story of a boy trying to join a band of herders, which harvest kyber crystals from cyborg cows and are under constant attack by spirits (read dark side hyenas). It's a good start to the anthology; the CGI is bright and makes good use of color, and it has a nice twist at the end.
7/10
Mkhuzi the Spirit Racer
By South Africa's Simangaliso Sibaya and Malcolm Wopé, this one bears a bright and joyous 2D animation. It features a half-human half-something boy who struggles with his Zulu identity, and that all comes crashing down in a race against gentrification. It's a delightful short with beautiful visuals and actual incorporation of cultural themes into the narrative.
9/10
Moremi
By Nigeria’s Shofela Coker, this is a pretty bleak looking CGI short not out of place in Love, Death & Robots. Long ago, soul stealing giants forced a woman to construct magical machines by giving her son's heart to the gods; this is about the summary you're gonna get without getting into heavy spoilers. A delight if you're into mythology as there's quite a few allusions to Nigeria's folklore, but I can see people getting a bit confused and the visuals can be grating at times.
6/10
Surf Sagoma
By South Africa’s Nthato Mokgata and Catherine Green, in a future where sea levels rose and mutant octopi lurk in the depths a boy is peer pressured into surfing in dangerous waters. I have to say, while this has a happy ending it is rather bleak and the CGI visuals are not particularly pleasing.
5/10
First Totem Problems
By South Africa’s Tshepo Moche, we're back to 2D, this time more Disney-esque. If I had to describe this, it'd be like a mixture of the first half of Brother Bear and Coco. It's pretty fun, though a bit lacking in substance and the family feuds can get grating.
7/10
Mukudzei
By Zimbabwe’s Pious Nyenyewa and Tafadzwa Hove, an influencer desecrates Great Zimbabwe, only to be taken to a timeline where it never fell to colonialism and became basically Wakanda. The concept alone is amazing, though the story itself is rather generic.
8/10
Hatima
By South Africa’s Terence Maluleke and Isaac Mogajane, this is by far my favourite of the shorts, it features the tragic conflict between merfolk and humans, with a Black Panther 2 reveal at the end. With stellar 2D animation and allusions to Dogon mythology, as well as a good solid plot where the reveal has just the right amount of foreshadowing without becoming obvious.
10/10
Stardust
By Egypt's Ahmed Teilab, I had the highest expectations for this one, being the only Middle Eastern short in the mix. It's an alright story, I really loved the science fantasy twist on astrology by just being handed a "destiny" in a tube with stars inside. The protagonist naturally choses her own fate over the manufactured ones... though getting there is quite spoilerific.
8/10
You Give My Heart
By South Africa’s Lesego Vorster, this is another return to 2D animation and the second one about influencers amusingly enough. The plot kicks off in a competition in which the human contestants can ascend to godhood. Godhood is very much treated like being an influencer, and amusingly one of the previous contestants was demoted by typing in all caps. Overall pretty fun and the animation is gorgeous, though the characters designs can get a bit ugly.
9/10
Enkai
By  Kenya’s Ng’endo Mukii, the final short is done in a CGI mimicking stop motion, which combined with the stellar coloration and lighting makes for a stunning visual experience. This too deals with the divine, this time the young Enkai seeking to become a creator deity like her mother. There is a big plot twist that I will not spoil, and recontextualises the whole short.
9/10
Conclusion
I give the overall anthology 9/10; barring a few hiccups, these are wonderful stories from Africa's many creative voices. Again, pity Disney has a grasp on this.

Little Giant from Jamaica
The cold of the studio doesn't seem to affect him, there he is, the young man from Jamaica, a short dark-skinned guy with muscles that seem carved in ebony. Handsome, with that tenderness that radiates from his brown eyes, he stands in front of my lens, completely naked except for a yellow bracelet decorating his wrist.
His dreadlocks and perfectly groomed beard give him a wild look. I capture with my camera the snapshot just when those brown orbs pierce me with an intense gaze. And there below, hanging to his knees, his main attribute imposes itself with an overwhelming presence: 'un vergón enorme y gordo' that seems like a totem of power.
It's hard to remain professional when you have in front of you such a spectacle of nature, a living antithesis, a small body carrying the strength of a giant. I shoot another photo, capturing the essence of that hypnotic contrast. The camera loves every inch of his smooth skin, his radiant youth, and that immeasurable virility that seems to challenge the laws of physics.

Note
I just wanted to rec the CN Mr. Melancholy to you and all your readers.
For people who love identity porn, this is great. It's like Miraculous levels of identity shenanigans. The strongest Destroyer and the strongest Protector, the ordinary person and the auxiliary police officer, and sometimes the Great Clearer and the Protector Uncle. But they also leave opportunities to find out if they or each other are the ... Enemies is too strong a word. Anyways, Protector/Destroyer.
In the book, there's a System that's trying to take over as many worlds as it can. It takes Levelers from their native world and puts them to work destroying new worlds. If they win, they get a prize. If they clear all the "levels" they can get a wish granted. Only 1 person has ever cleared the System. The Clearer decided that they wanted to live one last lifetime normally and die. Just a peaceful life.
You Zhengping is a Protector, trained to defend his world against the invading Destroyers, in a battle that has lasted generations. The world has experienced 15 peaceful years and has relaxed it's guard. He just wants a good life with his husband, Yu Hua, an ordinary man who just wants to live a peaceful life.
One day, the System issued a new mission. Anyone who finds the Clearer and kills him is the new Clearer. Destroyers begin to invade a peaceful world once more.
That's the best I can give as a synopsis. I made it sound serious but there's a lot of humor in it. The interactions between the characters are great. I don't want to spoil too much but I love the interactions of the Destroyers who defect.
Yu Hua rules them with an iron fist in a velvet glove. The Destroyers spend the whole time looking forward to a new sucker joining the studio to take the place as Lowest on the Totem Pole.
Only Zhen Li, the President who has nothing but his looks going for him, knows everything (besides Yu Hua). He even spends some time as a triple spy, lol. Yu Hua knows that he has no brains so he makes good use of him. Zhen Li spends a lot of his time thinking about how the newest sucker is going to regret provoking Yu Hua. I always feel so bad for him, too. He's under so much pressure from so many different angles. He's just so sweet.
Anyways, for people who like hidden societies, identity porn, rebelling against the System and the cute daily life of a pair of love brained husbands, this is for you.
okay this sounds delightful
