🌟 Pacifiers 101 🌟
✨ Whether you call it a pacifier, soother, dummy, paci, or any other name, many cadets aboard the little space station enjoy them! Here's the rundown of things you should know about them before you buy one! ✨
🌠 An adult sized pacifier is the safe and best choice. 🌠
While baby pacifiers are more easily accessible, they aren't meant for people with bigger mouths/teeth. Baby pacis are too short and are only able to reach just past your teeth. Pacifiers are supposed to end up at the roof of your mouth, which is why different sizes exist in the first place. If a paci is too short/small, then there are two outcomes:
Instead of your tongue keeping your paci from slipping out, you would bite down on it to keep it in place. Clenching your jaw shut for too long can cause aches and pain in both your jawline and your teeth.
If you attempt to suck your baby paci, your tongue will push itself against your front teeth repeatedly. This repeated force from your tongue is strong enough to push your teeth forward, which, if done excessively and over a long enough time frame, can lead to either an overbite or underbite. Long before that happens however, your front teeth will ache.
Adult pacifiers should not cause these problems. There are only a very few exceptions where they would not help, and I'll list them:
You have barely lost your front teeth. Teeth and genetics are weird, and while the majority of people will have lost their front teeth when they were 6 or 7, some people lose their baby teeth later than that. Some individuals even get an entire second set of adult teeth! If any of these situations apply to you, then using any pacifier (but especially a too small one) after your new teeth have grown in is an unwise idea. There are gaps in the bone underneath your gumline, which means your teeth are especially sensitive to any type of pressure and are highly susceptible to shifting out of alignment. It typically takes a year for the bone underneath to solidify, in which case you should wait to use a paci until then.
You have braces/have barely gotten your braces removed. Similar to the circumstances above, if your teeth have recently been purposefully shifted into alignment, using a pacifier can cause aches and movement in your teeth. This can be prevented with the very important tool your dentist gave you: a retainer! Adult pacifiers fit perfectly behind your retainers, which will prevent any movement and/or pressure on your teeth. I would recommend not using your pacifier without a retainer until: you are instructed to stop using a retainer altogether or a year after you are instructed to use your retainer only while you're sleeping. These times are greater than if you had new teeth because the older you are, the longer your body takes to grow - this includes bone. The older you have dental work done, the longer it'll take for this bone to fully fill the space your teeth have vacated; if your dentist has instructed you to use your retainer for the rest of your life, I do not recommend using a pacifier for long periods of time without a retainer in place, as you have an increased risk of developing an overbite.
Your mouth is too small. The question is in which way your mouth too small? For example, if your teeth are too big for your mouth (and you may have even had some of them removed to make space/have straight teeth) then chances are that you would have to use an adult paci. However, if your teeth are short and otherwise child-sized, then you may instead find that the largest baby paci (36 months) will suit you fine and cause no pain. In this very specific circumstance, a baby pacifier may suit your needs better, as, to reiterate, as long as the paci ends at the roof of your mouth then you shouldn't have any problems.
🌠 The Care and Cleaning of Your Pacifier 🌠
All pacifiers should be properly cleaned and sanitized when you first get one. Afterwards, they should be routinely cleaned to prevent bacteria and germs from growing and entering your mouth, even if they don't seem dirty.
Wash it with warm water and dish soap. Take a clean cloth or towel, damp it with warm water, add a squirt of dish soap, and carefully clean the nipple and the back of the shield. Other soaps may not be food safe - as in, suitable for something you're going to be putting in your mouth - so it's best to be careful.
Use pacifier wipes. In stores, there exist specific wipes to clean pacifiers with! Some are vaguely flavored, so even if you might pop your paci in right after cleaning, it won't leave a chemical taste in your mouth.
In the event that your pacifier needs to be completely sanitized (such as dropped on the ground or other unsanitary place or if used during an illness) your options are:
If you have an undecorated pacifier, as in one without any added embellishments, then you can bring some water to a boil, disassemble and toss the paci in there, stir it around for 2-5 minutes, remove it, and allow it to cool completely before putting it back together and placing it in your mouth.
If you have a decorated pacifer, check with the seller to see if there are any specific cleaning instructions.
After using your pacifier, make sure it is dry before putting it in storage to prevent the development of germs and bacteria - if possible, cleaning it after usage is recommended for long term storage.
Storage can be any container or location that is clean and dry: an old lunch box, a new pencil case/box/bag, a new make-up bag, a tin container, a tupperware container, a mason jar, a Halloween pail, an Easter basket, a Valentine's Day box/tin/mailbox, and even a drawer are all examples of what you can use. If your pacifier storage can be easily cleaned, then feel free to use it!
🌠 Pacifier Usage 🌠
While using your pacifier, it's best to avoid the practices that can lead to aches and pain, as previously mentioned.
Your tongue should not be touching or pushing against your front teeth at any point in the process, as this is what commonly leads to teeth aches and teeth shifting out of alignment. On top of this, you run the risk of becoming comfortable resting your tongue against your teeth even when you aren't using your pacifier, which can also lead to your teeth shifting out of alignment.
Instead, your tongue should be resting along the bulb of the nipple, which should be right below your hard or soft pallet. Suckling may push the bulb towards the back of the mouth (or, your tongue moves along the stem of the nipple), but as long as your tongue doesn't brace the nipple against any teeth, you shouldn't experience any discomfort.
You may be tempted to bite down on your pacifier to keep it in your mouth, but as long as it's properly sized, that's not necessary. In fact, biting down on it can strain your jaw, similar to how teeth grinding can do the same. If you find yourself doing this often, with the jaw pain to go along with it, you may find it better to buy a mouth guard - some models even have a pacifier-like exterior, and you can view them as a more teether-like alternative.
When using your pacifier for long periods of time, you may begin to notice discoloration alongside the corners/edges of your mouth. This is common for people who use pacifiers, people who have retainers, or people who produce more saliva/drool more than average.
Don't fret! Lip balms that promise "lip repair", "intense therapy", and "skin protecting" can be used at the corners of your mouth to soothe any irritation and prevent future discoloration from occurring again. If these are unavailable, petroleum jelly may help.
✨ Class dismissed - now go ahead and get the pacifier of your dreams, cadet!✨

Spy's super-duper easy big kid Easy-Ups tutorial!
Note before we start- I didn't write image descriptions on this post, as I feel I'd just be repeating the written out steps in slightly different wording. If you think they'd be helpful, let me know and I can try! I can also make a video of this process if that's something people want
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Modded Easy-Up pictured next to an unmodded one and a target brand L/XL bedwetting pant)
Sizing notes: I have large hips (about 39in/100cm) and muscular thighs. I fit comfortably in XL Goodnites (I suspect I could wear L but haven't tried), Target brand L/XL bedwetting pants, and generally wear a size L in adult diapers although I probably need to go down to M. I think these would probably fit up to around 45"/114cm hips.
What you need:
Tumblr media
Two Easy-Ups (I'm using size 5t-6t. I expect you could also use 4t-5t) or similarly designed training pants
Scissors
Hot glue. Be careful and don't burn yourself, I suggest using silicone finger protectors or heat proof gloves! You could probably also use other types of glue as long as it's water resistant, or even a needle and thread if you're only going to wear and not have accidents
Tumblr media
Plushie friend for emotional support
How-to:
1. Tear the sides of both Easy-Ups, like you would to take it off
2. Play around with how long you want it to be. It's helpful for this step if you have a training pant or a diaper that fits you comfortably to reference, but you can also make your best guess, or get all fancy and use a tape measure for proper measurements
3. Carefully peel back the cotton from the plastic backing around where you'll be making your cuts
4. Cut! Be careful, the absorbent material stays inside pretty well but it can spill out here. Don't cut the stretchy sides, you'll need them for a later step so hold onto them
Tumblr media
5. Slot one Easy-Up into the other, between the absorbent inside and the plastic backing. I overlap mine by about an inch and a half, but you can do more or less
Tumblr media
6. Glue the plastic down. Make sure there aren't any small gaps in the glue, you want it to be watertight (less important if you don't plan to wet them)
7. Glue the outer cotton layers down. As the cotton doesn't serve any function other than aesthetics/comfort, you can trim it back as much as you want and you don't have to use as much glue here
Tumblr media
8. Flip the Easy-Up over. Fold the exposed edge at the join in on itself to keep the absorbent insides in place, and glue it down. You want this to NOT be watertight so that it absorbs properly, so use small dots of glue to secure it in place
Tumblr media
9. Glue the cut leak guards together. This is the part where I'm most likely to burn myself, so be really careful! If you don't plan on wetting, you can probably skip this step
10. Take the pieces you cut off earlier and cut off the stretchy sides. You'll want to cut them to fit you. For me, using all of the sides made the Easy-Up too big for me, so I trimmed them down a bit
11. Glue the cut sides to the existing sides of the Easy-Up, front and back. Overlap for strength
Tumblr media
12. Glue the front and back sides together, the same way they were out of the package so that they can be torn. If you plan to just wear and not use, you may want to glue them overlapping like the previous step so that they're less likely to tear if you want to rewear them
Tumblr media
13. All done! Go pick out a potty chart and some stickers like the big kid you are!
(No pictures of them being worn/in use, as this is a SFW blog so I'm not posting pics of me in my undies, sorry folks!)
Closing thoughts/pros and cons
Overall, I'd consider this to be a really successful experiment! I started with these ones because the designs are cute (and they had them at my local pharmacy), but since they worked so well, I'm planning to play around with Pull-Ups and maybe the smaller sizes of Goodnites with the Disney prints. These probably won't be something I make/wear all the time (while they performed great, my incontinence is better managed by diapers rather than any pull-ups), but I was aiming for something that would make me feel like a kiddo working on potty training, and they very much do. Also, while I am posting this as a tutorial for other people to follow, I'm considering an agere store and selling packs of these for folks who can't or don't want to DIY-- would anyone be interested in that?
Pros:
Easy to do and only needs supplies most people already have
Fairly cost effective-- depending on the pack size you buy, it works out to about the same cost per pant as buying a pack of Goodnites
Very comfy! I couldn't feel the seams when I had them on!
I was surprised by how absorbent they are! Wetting accidents are absorbed evenly through both Easy-Ups, the Pampers three channel absorbancy really lives up to the hype! I've had no leaks except for when I literally push them past their absorbancy capacity, the glued seams haven't had any issues. I can't say how well they'll perform for everyone, as I have a tiny bladder and to test them, I was just wetting as soon as I felt the need rather than trying at all to hold or make it to the potty, but they held about 3 accidents for me. I haven't tested them for #2 accidents yet, but if I keep wearing them regularly, I'll be testing sooner or later whether I want to or not, so... watch this spot for updates I guess
Cons:
Time consuming. It takes me about 30 minutes to do this
Still has an upper size limit. Theoretically you could keep adding the sides of other Easy-ups, but I have no way to test how well that would work, so I can't officially recommend that
Not as full coverage as a pant meant for bigger sizes would be. It covers what's important, but your bottom might be hanging out a bit

🎃👻 Boo Basket Ideas for Littles 👻🎃
If you haven't heard about them before, a Boo Basket (or Boo Bucket or Boo Bag) is a basket filled with Halloween and fall-themed goodies - so, basically, a Halloween-themed Easter basket 😅
They're intended to be given to people of all ages - from parents to kids, neighbor to neighbor, spouse to spouse - basically, they're for everyone!
The reason I think these Boo Baskets are LITERALLY PERFECT for littles is because, for a lot of them, they either aren't comfortable or can't go out to go trick or treating. If that's not an option, then many are happy to simply pass out candy to trick-or-treaters... except when they can't even get the satisfaction from that because of a lack of trick or treating in their neighborhood.
There are always other available events, from local fairs, fall festivals, trunk-or-treats in random parking lots, theme parks, amusement parks, and other pay-a-fee-to-walk-around-and-get-candy events - but some littles may not be able to attend one of these either.
With no big event or activity to do, then some littles may feel left out or are otherwise let down by the time Halloween Day arrives.
But! Getting a Boo Basket can give them something to look forward to!
The Boo Basket itself can be anything - a trick-or-treat bucket, a woven basket, a cauldron, a paper bag - what matters is that it fits whatever you put inside it! It doesn't have to be big, nor do you have to put lots of items in it, it's the thought that counts!
Some things you can put in a Boo Basket:
Comfy Things! This is a big category that stretches from cozy socks to big, soft blankets! There's also sweaters, hoodies, and/or special Halloween pajamas!
Candles! Scents play a large part in setting a mood - from scents like Pumpkin Pie to a Ghostly Graveyard, there are plenty of aromas for any type of little!
A Mask! Depending on the little, one can tuck in a spooky, rubber monster mask, a fun, shiny plastic mask, or a plain wooden or paper cut-out mask that the little can decorate themselves!
Toys! There are so many possible toys one can throw in, but some ideas are a Halloween stuffie, a themed doll, a horror action figure, a wind-up toy, or a container of slime!
Books! There are plenty of picture books that are appropriately themed, as well as coloring books, but for older littles, some spooky horror books can also be a fun treat!
A Movie! Physical media isn't dead, so putting in a DVD or BluRay can be fun! There are compilations of Halloween episodes for kids shows, family-friendly flicks, and scary horror movies!
Treats! Any treat you think the little in question would like can go right in! From sweets like chocolates, gummies, lollipops, cookies, and marshmallows to more savory things like popcorn, pumpkin seeds, chips, and pastries, there are plenty of food one can throw in! Don't feel limited to food items though, as hot chocolate or coffee can be just as special!
Other Bits and Bobs! Stickers, bookmarks, lotions, bathbombs, glow sticks, puzzles, fidgets, decor, if you think the little in question would like it, toss it in!
If all these items and the variety of items are a bit overwhelming, one can also make a themed Boo Basket!
Some specific themes for a Boo Basket:
A Recipe and its Ingredients! Collecting all the items necessary for a specific recipe can make for a fun activity! You can also throw in new cutlery, flatware, or cups!
Movie Night! A blanket, movie, and popcorn - along with any other treats - can make for a perfect movie night!
Slime! Instead of simply buying some slime, making a slime recipe of choice is another fun activity - especially if themed mix-ins are there!
Glow Party! Halloween night is when festivities tend to start, so why not have a bunch of glow-in-the-dark items to play with when the sun goes down! Light-up items are just as fun, and last longer, so feel free to mix the two!
Sugar Rush! Just fill the basket with as much sugar-filled items as possible :) Your little can handle it responsibly :) It's fine :)
Jack-o'-Lantern! Place a medium to large pumpkin in the basket, along side either a carving kit or painting kit! Placing the ingredients preferred for roasted pumpkin seeds can make the whole affair an event! Toss in some mini pumpkins and markers to make a whole family!
Most of the items listed can be bought at a dollar store or other bargain stores, so they can be made with any budget! Don't stress about the amount of items you're getting, as, again, it's the thought that counts!
I hope if anyone makes or gets a Boo Basket, themed or not, that it brings them some needed Halloween spirit!
👻🎃Happy Halloween! 🎃👻

Momma’s Get Tired Too
Aw kiddo, Momma’s sorry. I know I haven’t been interacting with you as much, Momma’s just a little more tired than normal lately. Let’s make a deal yeah? How about you gather allll your favorite stuffies up and we have a movie night? It might not be much, but it’s the best I can do right now. I’ll even go make a tiny little snack platter for everybody to eat from, and maybe I can get you a drink too! Does that sound alright? Thank you for being so understanding little one, now remind me again..what snacks do your stuffies like? Oh oh that’s right! Let’s go grab your favorite sippy too, I’ll lift you up to grab it, ready? one..two..lift! Got it sweetheart? Good girl! Do you want to help Momma prepare the plate? Such a helpful bab, I’m so lucky ‹𝟯
————————————————————————————————————————
~~ Ideas for Carer’s Going Through Burnout ~~
• movie night with a small snack platter / take in that’s more snackish (maybe even feed your bab if you have the energy!)
• show and tell! have your kiddo bring their stuffies (or even other things) and have them introduce them, tell facts about them, or a story about!
• do virtual tours or watch zoo cams with them and ask them some questions about the animals/things they see! or print out any worksheets provided by the organization/for teachers
• tummy time / sensory play! this is a simple but fun time! get a plastic zip block bag and fill it with some paints, buy a tummy time mat, or get some sand for your little one to play with!
• coloring together
. . . burn out can be very hard for us carers! we know more than anything regression isn’t always controllable and that being there for our littles is always our top priority and there’s nothing more that we want to do, so when our energy gets low it tends to stay low because we tend to be hard on ourselves over it! just because our energy is low doesn’t mean you did anything wrong or should be upset because of it, we love seeing our little ones happy especially if we can’t be at the moment, you cheer us up soo much! and to other carers reading this, you’re no less of a carer during your burn outs, take care of yourselves and do your best! 🤍🔅
