greek mytholgy and the modern age
So recently I have seen a lot of takes on modern adaptations of greeks myths and how they are bad (or in that vein), and I just kind of want to rant about it, for a hot second.
Recently most of us have consumed some variation of a greek myth based story (PJO,HoO, Lore Olympus, Neon Gods, Touch of Darkness, Olympus High, Hadestown, so on and so forth), there seems to be a string of thought that not knowing the original myths or whatever is bad (again I’m not actually sure what these people want, but it just seems to be negative to these stories based on the notion they aren’t true to the myths).
First, good luck adhering to the original myths. There is zero coherence in primary sources that “original myths” is a myth in of itself (Where did Aphrodite come from? Who is Hephaestus's father?). Already we have reached a problem.
But my bigger issue comes from the way people talk about the characterization. “They have stripped them of there complexities/personalities/stories.” Yeah, probably. That’s what happens when you adapt characters that were created in the BC era. Like it’s a completely different culture/society.
Zeus is a cheater/ horrible person - Zeus was known to sleep around, and has many children with people that aren’t Hera (legit half the Olympians are his kids). He’s a horrible person? Yeah, we don’t tend to look favourbily at the top guy (King of the Gods)
Hades is just a sad boi who wants to love his wife- there is some mythological precedence to suggest part of that. We also tend to romanticize the under dog (think the Lucifer tv show). He also doesn’t have a list of lovers a mile long
Demeter is a either a horrible mother or a helicopter mother- if you’re adapting Hades/ Persohphe, it makes sense. Also that myth does showcase her starving out the world to get her way
Hera is usually a bitch- she curses all of Zeus’s lovers
Hestia doesn’t really exist in adaptations- technically her character doesn’t appear in a lot of myths/ arguably kind of boring
Apollo is an ego maniac- he’s the legit Sun god/ golden boy. We don’t tend to like that in the 21st century story telling
Aphrodite is vein/ the mean girl- she’s the goddess of beauty and sex, and is shown in myths to not be the nicest of people
On and on and on...
It’s just weird that people seem so upset by it, when it just seems like the natural progression of adaptation. It’s a mythos most people have a passing familiarity with it (mainly because it is one of the few that survived to this day relatively in tact), has A LOT of characters/ character dynamics to play with, and tends to avoid the issues that comes adapting stories from more marginalized groups.
TLDR: adapting characters from older sources means we place our own ideals onto it, which isn’t a bad thing when your simply looking for entertainment.

atod steve is literally the blueprint. also just the concept of "i wont let anyone hurt you if ur under my care" just comes through so much with him. Like im imagining some guy flirting w r and going too far to the point that shes obviously uncomfortable and ofc steve doesnt take it for even a second. and he sends r away so she doesnt see what hes ab to do. but as he makes it to the car he sees a glimpse of r swiping a tear away and protectiveness and concern kicks in...
Touch The Darkness Steve definitely won't let anyone hurt you as long as you're his. And since you'll be his forever... He's the only one who gets to hurt you 😎
There are times when Steve shields you from witnessing too much bloodshed, but he also is a firm believer of learning through experience, so he may kill right in front of you as a warning for you to keep closer to his side.
Protectiveness? Yes. In his very wicked way. Concern? Em, not so much. Mostly because Steve's aware you're a tough cookie and will handle things one or other way.

This book is definitely on my top 3 list. 💀📖
The storyline was very well written, the characters are amazing.
The way Scarlett St. Clair described Persephone is just amazing. Persephone has a feminist vibe for me, because at the end she found her confidence and power to stand up for herself and became a badass goddess. Hades’s character is ideal. He is the fearless, strong god who only has a soft spot for his girl. He was so gentle with Persephone because all he wanted is her to be safe. The way they fell in love… I loved their story, how they bonded. Hermes’s and Lexa’s friendship with Persephone is so cute and right. Hermes’s comments were hilarious and Lexa’s little pushes were so cute and she is really a best friend material because she was there for P when she needed the most.
(I made the collage of the aesthetic I imagined for this book)
(Also if you want to read, be aware of the sexual content)

I love the Hades X Persephone love story. This series was has been fun to read as I find myself mazed into the plot. I love the •touch of spicy• too. The passion and fury of Hades and Persephone is tangible. Sometimes I wonder does that passion exist in our world? If I’m even asking that question does that mean I haven’t experienced it yet?

My therapist recommended two series to me as some of her favorite series ever. I've now read two books of the first series and one of the second and as much fun as they were, I'm just baffled that these are her favorites when there are so many books out there.
