Speculation for Touhou 19 Update: [SPOILERS THIS IS OUTDATED KINDA SORTA LOL]
Ok so I haven't gotten to talk too much about my theories for Touhou 19 but I'll share some speculation and predictions that I have as well as a few theories.
First of all, I feel like not enough people are mentioning Seija as a possible character in this game, like, her whole thing is about the "weak eating the strong" and "overturning society" so this seems like a pretty good chance for her to go against the main enforcers of that ideology i.e. the beast yakuza leaders (Saki, Yachie, and Yuuma). I mainly got this idea from another Tumblr user mentioning Seija and I loved that concept so much, so I'm bringing it up again just to make people more aware of it.
Another thing I would like to mention is the SDMs role in the story, which may seem out of left field but hear me out. So, in 17.5 Okina got Flandre to beat up Yuuma yadayadayada incident solved. I haven't read up on too much of 17.5s story but I know that she's left in charge of the blood pools by Okina and that's that… or is it? What about the eagle spirits that learned of their leader (who they hold in very high regard) being defeated? Wouldn't they also use this opportunity to get revenge on the one who did it? How would Remillia react if she learned that her little sister was being targeted by a bunch of (potentially dangerous) beast spirits? And thus, this would be the reason for Sakuya to get herself involved in the incident. Even if Remillia or Flandre herself tried to tell her "It'll be fine! They're weak anyway! What's the worst they could do?" Sakuya would probably be too paranoid to let it slide.
Another thing to note is the Netherworlds involvement in this game, specifically Youmu. It would also be very likely that she would be involved too since in one of her touhou 17 endings, Eiki told Youmu to get more information on Yachie. So of course, this would be a great oppurtunity to do so.
Some people are also speculating the Moriya Shrines involvement in the new incident, which could be likely as the opportunity of claiming new land would be right up their alley. Plus a leak of Sanae being a potential character in this would support this theory.
One of the most common predictions for Touhou 19s roster and story is that the beast yakuza leaders would also want to get themselves involved in claiming new land. Plus the potential introduction of the fourth faction could also play into this, with all of them trying to go for the same place at once.
Then we have Tsukasa, who I think could probably be related to the fourth faction or (just the beast realm in general), and could potentially be the instigator for Touhou 19s story as she was for 18s story. I should also bring up Chimatas potential involvement as I think it would make sense, this was probably an unintentional side effect of her own ability and she would obviously want to help sort things out again.
Another thing that's mentioned a lot in the story is the possibility of Reimu being lured into a trap of some sort by going to the animal realm, mainly by Aunn. Now, there could be a variety of things that could happen with Reimu and the animal realm, but I'm saving this part for last because it's the possibility I'm most excited for and think would be a really fun twist.
There's also the fourth faction, who we know from Yachies profile uses "cowardly tactics" such as poisoning, parasitism, and assassination, which may mean that the spirits in the faction may not be the strongest in terms of physical strength, but more in strategy, so who could the spirits in this faction be? Foxes, cats, or maybe even monkeys, which leans into the idea of the Sun Wukong character being the leader of the fourth faction.
Then there's the question of who is the true mastermind behind the incident. With Marisa stating that there is some "unknown magic" behind the whole thing, there could be a multitude of answers to this question. It could be someone new or someone we know. I personally think that Okina would play some role in this incident as one of her abilities is manipulating mental energy, which means that she could make everyone want the new land. It could probably be someone new, but the answer to this question will probably have to wait until the full game is out.
So, as of right now, everyone in Gensokyo is going for this new land that just popped up. Especially the beast spirits and beast gangs. Now, if we consider the possibility that the beast leaders themselves (including the fourth one) are also looking to claim the new land, then what does that mean for the animal realm? Since no one is there (except like, maybe a few beast spirits who didn't go), the animal realm (and the human spirits for that matter) are left unwatched.
And I think we know who would want to use this opportunity to gather some faith and take over the animal realm completely...
So, I feel like Keiki wouldn't be a playable, she would probably send Mayumi out to go get this new land for a new base for the human spirits as a backup plan, so we can expect Mayumi to join the "New stage 5 character becomes a protagonist" club. Meanwhile, Keiki has all the time in the world to reassemble her Haniwa army and take over the animal realm. Just to clarify, I don't think Keiki is the one responsible for the incident as a whole, rather, she's just taking advantage of the situation. It would be out of character for someone like Yachie to just leave without making sure the animal realm doesn't get taken over, it seems like an oversight that she wouldn't make. This is why I mentioned maybe a few beast spirits staying behind just in case something happens. Maybe the fourth faction leader is still in the beast realm and is trying to keep Keiki back as long as they can to the best of their ability, and if the fourth leader really is the Sun Wukong inspired character, then anyone who is familiar with the story they come from (Journey to the West) would know that this character would probably jump at the opportunity to fight a powerful god. That probably wouldn't be the primary reason just a little benefit for them.
And with that marks the end of this, really, really long post (LOL), but yeah those are a few of my predictions and speculations. I used to have the mentality of "If you say your wish out loud then it won't come true" but if I was right about the Sun Wukong inspired 2hu character then who knows, maybe I'll be right about a few things here. Let me know what you think could happen, I'm really curious!

Alright I'm going to ramble like a madman for a second. This deals with Touhou 19 but it's not any actual spoilers so I'm not going to put this beneath a readmore.
Okay so the character of Chiyari is a Tenkajin youkai ... well supposedly. Unlike every other Youkai in Touhou I can't find anything on what a Tenkajin is in any of my books nor in places like youkai.com. In fact the only results for Tenkajin I can find are literally her wiki entry. Also her profile mentions that legend has it her true form is a Mujina (badger) so maybe that's actually what she is and she just made up the Tenkajin thing. Alternatively, maybe Tenkajins are real but there's just presently no existing English resources on them. I dunno. But that's not really what this is about.
What this is about is that Chiyari repeatedly gets mistaken for a Chupacabra. Another blood sucking monster. Chiyari quite vehemently denies it through the different story modes but everyone identifies her as one. Including the quite worldly Mamizou, who is a quite recent arrival in Gensokyo from the outside world and generally seems to know a lot about youkai ongoings. Yet Mamizou looks at Chiyari and goes "oh hey a Chupacabra."
This seems to imply that a Chupacabra type youkai (youkai gets applied to things like Dullahan so I assume in Touhou all monsters are youkai regardless of culture) would be a monster girl. After all, they all see a monster girl and go "This is a Chupacabra" it only stands to reason then that a Chupacabra is a monster girl, right? So we can say from this that Chupacabra, like most Touhou monsters, are moster girls or have a monster girl form.
...
...
But wait. There's something weird about that isn't there?
BECAUSE THIS EXISTS.
Tumblr media
TUPAI
In the Forbidden Scrollery Manga we learn that Remilia Scarlet owns the above Chupacabra as her pet. She's had it for a while now and thinks it's adorable. This is her beloved pet. Her beloved pet Chupacabra.
But if Chiyari could be mistaken for a Chupacabra then that means that Chupacabra are monster girls. Which means THIS IS A PERSON!
"But this looks nothing like a monster girl" I hear you say.
Ah but we outright see Toutetsu Yuuma transform from a cute monster girl to an actual monstrous Taotie in Touhou 17.5. So it stands to reason youkai, or at least some of them, can go from monster girl to monster. Which means Tupai appearing in a monstrous form in Forbidden Scrollery does not prevent them from being a monster girl (or guy, I believe these use male pronouns for Tupai in the manga).
Could Tupai be some weird infiltrator just playing the role of a pet? Join us next time at the Bunbunmaru newspaper as we work to uncover the truth.

I don't normally bring up topics like this on this blog, but this is something I feel like we need to talk about more.
Jo'on's clothes in Goyoku Ibun very blatantly resemble arabian men's clothing, and that paired with the fact that her and Shion are calling themselves "oil barons" is just extremely racist.
I adore touhou, it changed my life in so many ways and has ultimately been having a huge good influence on me. Keep that in mind when I say that I'm very disappointed in ZUN for allowing this.
I'm going to call his actions racist and before you yell at me, racism isn't just white supremacists storming the capitol or yelling slurs at people of color. It's also your grandpa calling your Indian girlfriend "exotic" or your friend purposefully keeping distance from a black person nearby.
Stereotypes are also the latter category. The reason they're harmful is because perpetuating stereotypes dehumanizes groups of people allowing more serious acts of racism to happen.
And while this isn't the first time xenophobia was a thing in touhou (mostly in the form of sinophobia with the Lunarians being a monolithic evil and also Seiga, a Chinese person being the most evil character and Meiling being a Chinese stereotype), ZUN made commentary before about xenophobia being bad (both Yukari and Hecatia said that closing the borders of their respective realms are bad) and did tackle the topic of racism too in a respectful way (with Mike, a calico maneki neko being discriminated against by white maneki neko).
What I'm saying is that he doesn't put xenophobic elements in his works because he hates Chinese people and people of color, but because he has unchecked biases that he has to work on because he too isn't immune to propaganda. If you make art your world view will immediately have an imprint on it whether you realize or not.
Especially in a country where xenophobia and fascism is normalized to the point where nazi uniform cafes exist and one of the most popular anime being one that literally propagates xenophobia, imperialism and genocide. You know the one.
And while because of that, these biases are difficult to be seen or fought against, that's no excuse. Him, as someone who advocates for continuous self-improvement should do Much Much better than this, and we should be more critical of him like we are with regular people instead of putting him on a pedestal, since he too, is just human.

Twice now Flandre seems to think that EoSD was a serious incident where Reimu solved it as an unstoppable killing machine. In reality though, EoSD was the least serious incident and all the characters were trying out the new spell card rules.
Not sure how to read this ask. Possible answers range from a one-word "Yeah." to the unnecessarily stick-in-the-mud explanation you can enjoy below.
"Least serious incident" seems like an overstatement. The incident in PoFV literally consisted of flowers blooming out of season, and people just getting into duels on their own accord when they went to check it out.
I take it that you're talking about Flandre's dialogue with Reimu at the end of her 17.5 route, but I think you're taking an overly literal reading of what is just more of the usual snark, though obviously that's just my own read on it. If you wanted to be a bit silly, you could take it as joking references to the older games' sense of humor. Or... just Flandre's sense of humor, I guess.
That being said, I think "unserious incident" and "Reimu the unstoppable killing machine" are far from mutually exclusive.
On a mostly irrelevant side note, Flandre technically doesn't say "to our mansion" but "to me". So she probably isn't even talking about the EoSD incident itself, but the extra stage where Reimu came back a good while later. (Never mind that she was actually far nicer in that stage than in the rest of the game.)

Listen... if we get a new UN Owen arrange that's as good as the Beware the Umbrella arrange? A new Concealed Four Seasons arrange? And if new girl's theme is kickass? Maybe... just maybe, it'll all be worth it.

I saw about Okina, I’m so hyped! It sounds like she’s just around but fuck dude I’ll take whatever I can get.
Also playable Flan. Feel like everyone’s heard that. While I’m not a huge fan of EoSD getting focus, Flandre is like…the biggest exception, since she’s basically had no canon appearances almost ever (and I admittedly like her don’t tell anyone). And it sounds like Okina is involved in her route, and given Okina’s propensity for getting involved in other people’s shit just to fuck around and make the other person find out, I am so here for this duo.
