The Grimoire of Marisa - Pages 44-47 - Suika Ibuki's Spell Cards
Tumblr media
Kishin "Missing Purple Power"
Tumblr media
User: Suika Ibuki
Notes: Usually seen at parties, doping type (alcohol)
Reference Level: As if
She gets bigger, usually when she's drunk at parties. I mean, she's always drunk, but y'know.
This sorta thing ain't danmaku. Totally useless as a reference. She really is just a monster.
Oni Sign "Complete Massacre on Mt. Ooe"
Tumblr media
User: Suika Ibuki
Notes: Usually seen at parties, a real spicy drunk
Reference Level: Won't
She catches and throws you, usually when she's drunk at parties.
Again: not danmaku. Hurts a ton, too.
Ghastly Air "Deep Fog Labyrinth"
Tumblr media
User: Suika Ibuki
Notes: Usually seen at parties
Reference Level: Doesn't seem likely
She shows off a trick where she disperses her body like mist, usually when she's drunk at parties.
A monstrously crafty Spell Card where you can't touch her at all, but she can attack all she wants.
I wonder how the world looks to her while she's in mist form?
As always, I can't use this as a reference.
"Night Parade of a Million Demons"
Tumblr media
User: Suika Ibuki
Notes: Usually seen at parties
Reference Level: ★★★
Suika's only danmaku-like danmaku.
Even though it's her only one, it attacks with nothing but projectile quantity, making it the most danmaku-like danmaku in Gensokyo.
It just flattens you with pure power, so forget tryin' to strategize your way through it. It's pretty difficult to imitate, too.
She hardly uses any Spell-Card-like Spell Cards, but when she does decide to use one once in a while, she throws out this sort of overpowered mess. Oni really are behind the times. They don't understand these newfangled pastimes of ours at all.

New Touhou Danmaku Book Incoming
So apparenty the new Touhou official print work previewed in SCoOW 6 is a danmaku-analyzing book like The Grimoire of Marisa, with the difference that the spellcards are analyzed by pretty much all the usual playable characters (Reimu, Marisa, Sanae, Youmu, Sakuya) plus Sumireko.
Also unlike the GoM there will be some sort of accompanying manga with the plot written by ZUN and illustrated by Wild and Horned Hermit artist Aya Azuma.

The Grimoire of Marisa - Pages 37-38 - Komachi Onozuka's Spell Cards
Death Song "Ferry of the Deep Fog"
Tumblr media
User: Komachi Onozuka
Notes: Possible on land too, "I personally" type (*see reference at bottom of post)
Reference Level: I ain't feeling this one
A Spell Card where she rams you with a boat that a bunch of phantoms are riding on.
I'm recording various Spell Cards in this book not to research countermeasures for them, but rather to widen my own magical repertoire. But there's no point in referencing something where the ghosts just decided to tag along of their own accord.
That aside, though, the phantoms are just floating in the air. They're not actually riding in the boat. What the heck is her job, anyway?
Malice Sign "Regretful Bound Spirits"
Tumblr media
User: Komachi Onozuka
Notes: Seems like phantoms tend to gather around waterfronts
Gloominess: ★★★★★
A Spell Card where phantoms cling to you and follow you around.
Having phantoms cling to you is the worst kind of nuisance. You can shoo away mosquitoes, but your hand will just go right through a phantom.
Hm? Why do you still take damage if they just pass through you? I bet the secret of the phantoms' gloominess must be hidden there.
Death Price "Price of Life"
Tumblr media
User: Komachi Onozuka
Notes: Mainly a popular party trick, servant-type (invisible)
Believability: ★
A Spell Card that changes the value of the opponent's life into money and shows it to them.
As you're surrounded by money, your own agitated movement tarnishes its beauty in this fearsome danmaku.
But what interests me is that, no matter who she does this little fortune-telling show for, the amount of money is basically the same... is she just messing with us?
By the way, a human's life is priceless.
*A possible reference to a line from Klaus, the final boss of Xexex, "I myself will come out!" (Watashi mizukara ga deru!, 私自らが出る!). Despite the quality of the game itself, the low-quality character graphics and the final boss's humorously bizarre last words have given the game-- and this line in particular-- memetic notoriety among Japanese shooting game fans. The Grimoire of Marisa - Page 39 - Shizuha Aki's Spell Card
Leaf Sign "Falling Leaves of Madness"
Tumblr media
User: Shizuha Aki
Notes: Seen only around the end of fall
Reference Level: Depressing in several ways
A bunch of falling leaves, converted directly into a Spell Card. Unlike flower petals, falling leaves are real gloomy.
This Spell Card does a good job of expressing a slight sense of melancholy -- as well as the depression of having to clean the garden -- but I ain't keen on copying it.

The Grimoire of Marisa - Pages 36-37 - Keine Kamishirasawa's Spell Cards
Land Sign "Three Sacred Treasures - Sword"
Tumblr media
User: Keine Kamishirasawa
Notes: History lecture prop
Reference Level: ★
Seems like she uses this for history lessons.
The sword of the Three Sacred Treasures refers to Ama no Murakumo no Tsurugi. One slash from this thing, and there won't even be any weeds left growing nearby.
That sword's rough, barren nature really shows through in this Spell Card. Super weak.
Land Sign "Three Sacred Treasures - Orb"
Tumblr media
User: Keine Kamishirasawa
Notes: History lecture prop
Reference Level: ★★★
She uses this one in history lessons a lot, too. It's some real hands-on education.
The orb of the Three Sacred Treasures refers to the Yasakani no Magatama. It's sorta like a yin-yang orb?
I thought the gross curve of the thing felt familiar somehow... It kinda looks like a phantom. Maybe magatama are actually phantom figurines.
Land Sign "Three Sacred Treasures - Mirror"
Tumblr media
User: Keine Kamishirasawa
Notes: History lecture prop
Reference Level: ★★★★★
Occasionally used in lessons for senior students.
The mirror of the Three Sacred Treasures refers to the Yata no Kagami. Looks like a low-quality version of your everyday mirror, if ya ask me.
With the bad reflectivity, the reflected images comes back with an oddly different shape. I guess that's what she's trying to say...?
Reincarnation "Ichijou Returning Bridge"
Tumblr media
User: Keine Kamishirasawa
Notes: At the Human Village sometimes, fractal type
Reference Level: ★★★★★
A returning-bridge that's said to temporarily return lost lives. If it can bring back entire lives, it can bring back danmaku no problem.
So this is what danmaku looks like while you're gradually moving back to the past, huh?
But even if you go back to the past or forward to the future, my Master Spark's impression ought to be exactly the same. In other words, the speed of light is unchanging throughout all of space-time. Man, lasers really are the best.

The Grimoire of Marisa - Pages 40-43 - Aya Shameimaru's Spell Cards
Tumblr media
Crossroad Sign "Crossroads of Heaven"
Tumblr media
User: Aya Shameimaru
Notes: Often seen when I get chased away on mountain paths
Reference Level: ★★★
A path that was already treacherous is made even more treacherous by tengu.
This danmaku has a pretty strong "dead end" vibe to it, but if you look closely, there's a path right in the middle. Guiding people is part of a tengu's duty, so that's pretty fitting.
If it were up to me, I'd put a Master Spark through the middle.
Wind God "Wind God's Leaf-Veiling"
Tumblr media
User: Aya Shameimaru
Notes: Often used when Aya runs away
Reference Level: ★★★★
A Spell Card that obscures Aya's form with a massive number of leaves. One of the classic youkai arts.
But for something that's supposed to be camouflage, I can't help but think that it's just making her position more apparent. She's probably a show-off at heart.
There's next to no leeway to approach Aya, so you've gotta dart back and forth between the sharp leaves from a distance.
"Illusionary Dominance"
Tumblr media
User: Aya Shameimaru
Notes: Bet she'll get pulled over for speeding, theatrical type
Speed: ★★★★★★★
Her most befitting Spell Card, where she flies around at ultra-high speeds.
Her speed is just extraordinary; it's downright impossible to land an attack on her. If she can move at this speed without even being doped up on anything, then there's practically nothin' she can't do. Dunno why she sits around doing boring stuff like journalism all day.
By the way, this danmaku is totally useless as a reference for my magic, and there's obviously no particular trick to dodging it besides "try real hard" either.

The Grimoire of Marisa - Pages 39-40 - Minoriko Aki's Spell Cards
Autumn Sign "The Autumn Sky and a Maiden's Heart"
Tumblr media
User: Minoriko Aki
Notes: A maiden's heart as seen at the beginning of fall
Maiden Level: Are ya sure their hearts change that easily?
The color and direction of the danmaku turns on a dime.
I'll admit that fall weather changes often, but I ain't too sure about how often a maiden's heart does.
It looks simple at first, but every change of heart increases the bullet density.
Bumper Crop "Promise of the Wheat God"
Tumblr media
User: Minoriko Aki
Notes: Seen from fall to winter
Reference Level: ★
Meant to be reminiscent of a ritual performed with the gods that arrive on New Year's, apparently.
A good amount of sun and rain are indispensable for farming. The danmaku is so earthy, though. I ain't interested.

The Grimoire of Marisa - Pages 1-7
Tumblr media
In a world without rules, danmaku would be nonsense.
Foreword
The stars that shoot through the night sky, the butterflies that dance to the scent of flowers, the water that flows seeking lower altitudes, and the deep, dark mist.
All natural phenomena have some sort of reason behind their occurrence. Humans created reasoning in order to explain these very phenomena.
And so, every phenomenon that could be observed would therefore belong to the human race... supposedly.
Naturally occurring phenomena were explained differently throughout various places. Humans, being fond of unified theories, would thus come to believe that all but one, or perhaps even all forms of reasoning were false.
However, the youkai think like this: all observations, all the phenomena that occur in the world, and all forms of reasoning behind them are true. This is precisely because youkai themselves were born from natural phenomena and the thoughts people have about them.
I happened to see a tengu's notebook once. The notebook was full of writing by the tengu, detailing all the events of the world around us.
It described all the most insignificant bits of daily life, from a completely different point of view from mine. The tengu's observational skills were sharp; it seemed as if she had already transcended the world that I comprehend, and was building another all of her own.
Even if it's just insignificant everyday events, writing everything down ought to let me see something new. As I thought that, I decided to compile a book of what I thought had become the everyday scenery of my life --- Spell Cards.
Although I have to recall memories far older than the time that I saw the tengu's notebook, I may be able to acquire hints for new magic by writing them down.
From that train of thought, this book was born. It is the only danmaku grimoire in Gensokyo that a human has ever written. I'm not just copying Alice and the grimoires she writes. Honest.
I want to become able to use more magic. No, I plan to become more able. I will eventually be known as a great magician.
I won't spare any effort needed for that purpose, and I hope this book will be another step in obtaining that goal.
Well, if it doesn't, I'll just name it something big an' fancy like "The Fantasy Danmaku Image Compendium" and pawn it off to a library for a high price, so it'd be OK either way...

The Grimoire of Marisa - Pages 30-31: Hina Kagiyama’s Spell Cards
Wound Sign “Pain Flow”
Tumblr media
User: Hina Kagiyama
Notes: Near the river that flows down from the mountain
Reference Level: Too unlucky to reference
Ripples of pain. She likes to save up bad omens in her body, and just by getting close to her, it feels like the misfortune will cycle over to you.
This Spell Card uses her specialty well; she just has to spin around in the water, and the water becomes a prickly mess. I can't copy this, and I sure as heck don't want to.
Flawed Sign “Broken Amulet”
Tumblr media
User: Hina Kagiyama
Notes: Near the river that flows down from the mountain
Recycle Level: ★★★★
Danmaku that just throws broken amulets. Since they're broken, they fall apart immediately, and their fragments fall irregularly in this Spell Card.
I really don't wanna get hit by one. It's bad luck.
I bet Reimu would do fine against this, though. She's got way more amulets than Hina, and they aren't broken. They do have "full house" (大入) written on them, though.

The Grimoire of Marisa: Pages 21-22 - Nitori Kawashiro’s Spell Cards
Drown “Trauma in the Glimmering Depths”
Tumblr media
User: Nitori Kawashiro
Notes: Traumatic, stress type
Stress Level: ★★★
I don't have any clear memories of drowning, but this Spell Card made me recall the view looking up from the bottom of the water.
Maybe I'm blocking out memories of nearly drowning when I was a kid.
By the way, I don't think I want to imitate danmaku like this. I'd just get really aggravated.
Water Sign “Kappa’s Pororoca”
Tumblr media
User: Nitori Kawashiro
Notes: What’s a pororoca...?
Reference Level: ★★
A flash flood, as it's called. This Spell Card just uses regular old water as danmaku, but that's what makes it hard.
It's a "brute strength" Spell Card-- my favorite type-- but the delicate movement of the water is hard to avoid.
If I use this as a reference in the future, maybe it'd be good to use boiling water instead. That oughta make it stronger.
Kappa “Monster Cucumber”
Tumblr media
User: Nitori Kawashiro
Notes: This food was enjoyed by the kappa afterwards
Vegetable: Gourd family
Kappas love cucumbers. Cucumbers are gourd-type vegetables with a large amount of moisture.
Even if there were a festival where people threw tomatoes at each other, I would prefer to eat them chilled and salted.
I'd also eat this danmaku with miso.

The Grimoire of Marisa: Pages 25-29 - Youmu Konpaku’s Spell Cards
Tumblr media
Hell Realm Sword “Two Hundred Yojana in One Slash”
Tumblr media
User: Youmu Konpaku
Notes: Confirmed in the Netherworld, theatrical type
Reference Level: Too hard while unarmed
Unique danmaku in which she cuts up the danmaku itself.
Directly revising the danmaku you just sent out... I could say it has a sort of "live performance" feeling, or a "didn't do enough prep work" feeling, or maybe a "cheating at rock-paper-scissors by making your move late" feeling. At any rate, it feels like watching some sort of play. Let's call it a theatrical type.
By the way, the large orbs come from Youmu's ghost half. It can shoot danmaku well enough, so maybe it's actually her main body?
Human Realm Sword “Fantasy of Entering Enlightenment”
Tumblr media
User: Youmu Konpaku
Notes: Confirmed in the Netherworld
Reference Level: ★★★
Apparently, this one's meant to represent humans attaining enlightenment and ascending to heaven... and then being knocked back down.
I see. The danmaku chases you from behind, so you're forced to move forwards.
Quite a stubborn spell card.
Heaven Sword “Five Signs of the Dying Deva”
Tumblr media
User: Youmu Konpaku
Notes: Touch it and death creeps up, bug type
Reference Level: I ain’t using this
These signs are said to appear when a deva is about to die.
There's five of 'em: constant uneasiness, withering of the flower crown, perspiration of the armpits, blemishing of the clothes, and an odorous body. To put it in a way that's easier to understand, you lose interest in various stuff, your hair gets messy, you sweat, your clothes gets dirty, and you stink. Basically.
Sounds like the signs of a stinky old man. I wanna avoid those at all costs, but showing those signs is natural for humans.
But conversely, if you can avoid those phenomena, then can you avoid dying? Always have fun, keep your hair well-kempt, always be in a cool place and don't exercise, constantly keep a change of clothes ready, and use floral scents. ...Hmm. Sounds like someone who won't die any time soon, sure, but what sort of human is that?
By the way, the danmaku is an utterly simple straight-pitch, straight-line attack. You have no choice but to observe carefully and dodge, but it's unexpectedly difficult. With the motif being what it is, though, I'd really rather not get hit with it...
Six Realms Sword “A Single Thought and Infinite Kalpas”
Tumblr media
User: Youmu Konpaku
Notes: Feels similar to Sakuya somehow
Reference Level: Can’t imitate it, but there are things to learn from it
A Spell Card where the user cuts around herself at super-high speeds.
Most of the time, when Youmu gets into her fighting stance, tensions run high for both parties and time seems to run slower than usual. But this attack happens too fast to keep my focus. Because of that, it's a very busy spell.
I thought it might be scarier if she just slashed directly at you with that speed, but thinking about it calmly, it'd leave her wide open if she missed. A spell like this is a lot tougher, since slashing indiscriminately around herself doesn't leave any gaps.
Celestial Star Sword “As the Silent Nirvana”
Tumblr media
User: Youmu Konpaku
Notes: Hardly ever seen, silent
Reference Level: ★★
Tensions run high when Youmu readies her sword. Normally, it just feels as if time is passing slowly, but when she really concentrates, you can't even hear any sound or see any color.
But does it actually affect my dodging in any way? Does dodging become more difficult without sound? Does it become harder to discern things without color? Maybe I'll try this out the next time. "Monochrome Silent Spark."
Hesitation-Cutting Sword “Slash of Departure from Hesitation”
Tumblr media
User: Youmu Konpaku
Notes: Confirmed in the Netherworld, just a drive-by slasher
Reference Level: I wanna reference this more than I expected to
A Spell Card where she just smacks you with her sword.
"This isn't danmaku, is it?" Touche.
By the way, "Departure From Hesitation" is apparently the boat that ferries souls across to Higan from the world of the unenlightened. So I guess a literal translation would be "Gonna-Kill-Ya Slash".
“Matsuyoi-Reflecting Satellite Slash”
Tumblr media
User: Youmu Konpaku
Notes: Can only be seen on the night before the full moon
Reference Level: ★★★★★
A Spell Card where she lunges at you at high speed while reflecting the light of the moon. The chilly radiance will have you seeing stars.
After a long charge-up period, she slashes at you right as the moonlight wavers, and you're surrounded by bullets of light in a single instant. A fearsome, indiscriminate attack.
Its weak point is that, because it's so powerful, it takes a great deal of time to accumulate. If you move while she's charging up, you won't get hit, so all you have to look out for is getting cut directly by Youmu like an idiot.
What's contained in the Machiyoi's light, though? Just by taking a little bit into the tip of her sword, she blankets the earth with countless blades. I wanna do some research on Spell Cards that use the moon's light too.
A laser of the moon's light, Moonlight Ray... I think I've heard of a spell card with that name before... nah, I'm just imaginin' things.

The Grimoire of Marisa - Pages 32-34: Ran Yakumo’s Spell Cards
Shikigami “Banquet of the Twelve General Gods”
Tumblr media
User: Ran Yakumo
Notes: Confirmed in the Netherworld, slave type
Reference Level: ★★★★★
An exceptional slave-type spell.
It's a crafty Spell Card where she remotely controls twelve slaves at once. Yep, I still really want slaves that I don't have to control directly.
The slaves' attack seems impossibly intense at first glance, but on closer inspection, each individual slave is just repeating one simple attack pattern. As long as you keep an eye on the ones that are spinning around, it's not that scary.
Shiki Shot “Ultimate Buddhist”
Tumblr media
User: Ran Yakumo
Notes: Confirmed in the Netherworld, movement stress type
Reference level: ★★★
Now THAT'S a manji (卍).
Ran forces everything around her to spin in circles. It's like a folk dance in a Buddhist temple garden. Strong folks always tend to have at least one movement-restricting Spell Card like this, probably to show off how effortlessly they can fight. It's like that story with the Buddha's palm.
By the way, a manji apparently represents the shape of some super-awesome god's chest hair. Gods really are on another level, huh.
“Kokkuri-san’s Contract”
Tumblr media
User: Ran Yakumo
Notes: Invisible slave & stress type
Reference Level: ★★★★★
I had her tell me who Kokkuri-san was afterwards.
It's a fox spirit, apparently, but it gets all full of itself and starts pretending to be Inari-san when humans call upon it. But it's a pretty mischevious spirit, so as soon as it gets bored, it amuses itself by frightening the humans instead.
It sounds like summoning Kokkuri-san to play a divination game is pretty popular down in the Human Village right now. There ought to be some merit in trying it out. I might be able to make it my slave, for one thing.
Shikigami “Protection of Zenki and Goki”
Tumblr media
User: Ran Yakumo
Notes: Confirmed in the Netherworld, invisible slave type
Reference Level: ★★★★
More invisible slaves.
This fox sure uses slaves a lot, doesn't she? But surprisingly enough, she's a slave herself.
Superhuman “Soaring En no Ozunu”
Tumblr media
User: Ran Yakumo
Notes: Confirmed in the Netherworld, doping type
Reference Level: Nope, not any time soon
A technique that dramatically raises one's physical capabilities, it seems. Has a very "now this is a youkai!" feel to it.
En no Ozunu was a magician from a very, very long time ago. An ancient senior of mine.
They say he could fly through the sky and used a bunch of different slaves. This Spell Card of Ran's is made in his image, she says; it's not actually summoning the guy. So she can boost her physical capabilities just by picturing him? Bah, friggin' youkai.

The Grimoire of Marisa - Page 31: Kisume’s Spell Card
Horror “Tsurube-Otoshi Apparition”
Tumblr media
User: Kisume
Notes: Seen in the evening from fall to winter
Reference Level: It’s only a jerk-in-the-box
A Spell Card where she just suddenly lunges at you from somewhere like the top of a tree, or the ceiling of a cave. As long as she doesn't catch you by surprise, there's absolutely nothing to be frightened of.

The Grimoire of Marisa: Pages 19-20 - Parsee Mizuhashi’s Spell Cards
Jealousy Sign “Green-Eyed Monster”
Tumblr media
User: Parsee Mizuhashi
Notes: Saw it on the way to the underworld, slave type (invisible)
Jealousy Level: ★★★
A spell that hits you with the sheer panic of running from an unidentifiable monster.
If you look closely, Parsee just sits still and leaves the monster to do everything. Must be nice.
This is an invisible slave-type spell. I feel like I wanna have at least one of this type of Spell Card. If I were to develop a slave-type spell, what should I use as the slave? I wanna spend my life with my eyes peeled for potential slaves.
Grandpa Hanasaka “Shiro’s Ashes”
Tumblr media
User: Parsee Mizuhashi
Notes: One of several party tricks, theatrical type
Jealousy Level: ★★★★
She sprinkles the burnt ashes of... something, and flowers bloom in its wake. They bloom regardless of the season or the type of tree.
Everyone's always amazed by the pretty flowers, but what's really amazing are the ashes.
I wonder where she hides those. I'm jealous.
The actual attack is nothing special, by the way. I could dodge flower petals in my sleep.
Tongue Cut Sparrow “Large Box and Small Box”
Tumblr media
User: Parsee Mizuhashi
Notes: Mostly old folktales, slave type
Jealousy Level: ★★
A clone technique that makes a fake Parsee appear.
Even fairies know that the big one is the wrong one.
But, y'know, I'd like to choose the big one on purpose. There's just something better about getting youkai from the large box rather than coins from the small box.
Malice Sign “Shrine Visit in the Dead of Night”
Tumblr media
User: Parsee Mizuhashi
Notes: Often seen at shrines and such
Jealousy Level: Not jealous of that
An unfortunate spell that's supposed to be ominous, but actually looks pretty.
The flames of jealousy shooting out from the five-inch nails of spite are, ironically, quite brilliant.
Maybe it'd be fun to give that whole "midnight shrine visit" thing a try. I wonder who I should have a grudge against?

The Grimoire of Marisa: Pages 10-17 - Reimu Hakurei’s Spell Cards
Tumblr media
Dream Sign “Evil-Sealing Circle”
Tumblr media
User: Reimu Hakurei
Notes: Often seen, movement stress type
Reference Level: ★★
A Spell Card where your movement is restricted by amulets. You're bound in place by the amulets and slowly strangled to death.
The fast charms aren't aiming for you, so it's not as difficult as it looks. Why doesn't she just aim them straight at you?
Bit of a tangent, but the amulets that Reimu uses for evil-sealing are booby-trapped. They look like gift envelopes with "full house" written on them, which makes you want to grab 'em, but there's nothing especially interesting in there. It's just a trap.
Dream Sign “Duplex Barrier”
Tumblr media
User: Reimu Hakurei
Notes: Confirmed during the Eternal Night Incident, theatrical type
Reference Level: ★★★
A Spell Card with a mysterious power that turns space inside-out. I'm jealous.
If I had an area enclosed in that barrier, my magic's range would also widen.
I indirectly asked Reimu about it, but it was pointless. Apparently, a barrier is a boundary line between things, and having two barriers on top of each other is equivalent to a world with no boundaries. If you can find the gaps in space that are hiding just about everywhere, you'll be able to set up a duplex barrier.
In other words, she's bad at explaining things.
Boundary “Duplex Danmaku Barrier”
Tumblr media
User: Reimu Hakurei
Notes: Confirmed during the Eternal Night Incident, theatrical type
Blowhard Level: ★★★★
A large-scale version of Duplex Barrier. This time I'm trapped in the inside part of the barrier too.
Honestly, the regular Duplex Barrier is stronger and more scary. This is the kind of thing people mean by 'a tactician getting caught up in his own schemes'.
Untitled “Flying Mysterious Shrine Maiden”
Tumblr media
User: Reimu Hakurei
Notes: Rare, theatrical type
Reference Level: ★
A desperation Spell Card that Reimu whips out while in an unconscious state. Hardly ever seen.
She never looks at you while the spell card is in effect, so you're limited to retreating.
Her attack is omnidirectional danmaku with no blind spots, just sprayed everywhere at random. She's not looking, so I guess that's bound to happen.
Y'know, I always think this, but I don't see the benefit of not looking at your opponent during a battle. Feels like it'd just be a disadvantage, but...
Divine Spirit “Fantasy Seal -Blink-”
Tumblr media
User: Reimu Hakurei
Notes: Long distance marathon
Reference Level: Only Reimu can do it, so it’s no good as a reference
Reimu herself only moves in a straight line, but somehow she completely surrounds you. Just as you think she passed behind you, she pops out from in front.
The tengu and Sakuya do something similar, but for the tengu, it's just speed, and for Sakuya, it's just teleportation. Reimu's technique isn't something cheap like that. You probably don't get what I'm talking about, but I don't really get it myself.
Reimu says that "you can't normally see the boundary that this barrier encloses, so it looks like there's countless copies of the enemy." Is it like a small world that loops around on itself? Or maybe it's something like two mirrors facing each other?
Reimu has lots of Spell Cards like this. They don't aim directly at you, so it's like being made fun of.
Divine Spirit “Fantasy Seal”
Tumblr media
User: Reimu Hakurei
Notes: Often seen
Reference Level: ★★★★
A Spell Card that forcibly seals you with bullets of light that ignore the laws of physics.
It can supposedly exterminate any and all youkai, no questions asked.
Apparently, it's a wonderful light that youkai hate more than anything, but even for humans it still kinda hurts.
But what is "sealing," anyway? Putting stuff in a rice jar?
Holy Relic “Yin-Yang Kishin Orb”
Tumblr media
User: Reimu Hakurei
Notes: Mainly used as a trick at parties
Size: ★★★★★
A Spell Card where she throws a giant yin-yang orb that was tucked away who-the-heck-knows-where. Unusually heavy lifting for Reimu.
Getting hit by the yin-yang orb hurts. Like, physically. 'Cause it's a plain old, hard, heavy ball.
The orb she uses in this spell card is particularly hot and heavy, but a human who gets hit with it won't get squashed flat or anything.
Divine Arts “Omnidirectional Oni-Binding Circle”
Tumblr media
User: Reimu Hakurei
Notes: Often used when angry
Fun-to-Watch Level: ★★★★
A Spell Card in which mysterious powers take away your freedom of movement. Apparently it's for binding demons, but it binds humans just as well.
Once this technique begins, all freedom will be lost until Reimu stops it. But because Reimu can't move too, capturing this spell card is easy. All you gotta do is watch from a distance.
But do I have the self-restraint to stay still and do nothing while Reimu's sitting there like an idiot? That's the biggest problem.

Notes: Rare, theatrical type
36th Stratagem Level: ★★★★★★★
Reimu becomes completely impossible to touch. She enters a visible "invisible man" state.
It's her ultimate secret technique, apparently, but it looks like she just closes her eyes while the danmaku fires itself towards the enemy automatically.
By the way, this wasn't even a Spell Card at first, but I gameified it by giving it a proper Spell Card name. Otherwise, there'd be no way to win.
This is the one single Spell Card that can only be used via the innate ability Reimu was born with. Hence the name "tensei”.

The Grimoire of Marisa: Page 30 - Mystia Lorelei’s Spell Card
Night-Blindness “Song of the Night Sparrow”

User: Mystia Lorelei
Notes: On a deserted road late at night, vision stress type
Stress Level: ★★★★★★★
When the sun goes down, the road on the edge of the Human Village becomes completely dark. If you carelessly use this road at night, you might hear some strange, noisy singing.
That would be Mystia's Spell Card: unique danmaku which reduces your field of vision before you even know it. There's nothing particularly difficult about this danmaku by itself, but not being able to see far away is terrifying.
This is a type of Spell Card that focuses less on danmaku, and more on affecting the opponent's ability to dodge. You're forced to dodge while being given a feeling of stress that's like the oppressive atmosphere of the rainy season.
