Underwood will release her eagerly-anticipated new album, Cry Pretty, on September 14. Cry Pretty will be her first studio album on Capitol Records Nashville and marks the first time she has co-produced her own album. The lead single and title track, “Cry Pretty” debuted as the #1 song in the U.S. all-genres. The song also topped download charts in 38 countries around the world and amassed over 3.5 billion social impressions across 66 countries during its week of launch in April, which was culminated with a show-stopping performance on the “2018 ACM Awards” telecast. Carrie co-wrote the powerful single with Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna, and Liz Rose (aka The Love Junkies) and co-produced Cry Pretty with fellow writer/producer David Garcia.
Following her successful “The Storyteller Tour – Stories in the Round,” the new production will feature a brand-new stage in the middle of the arena floor, creating a unique 360-degree setting to allow fans on all sides of the arena an intimate view of the concert.  Barry Lather (Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson) is the tour’s Creative Director, and Nick Whitehouse/Fireplay (Justin Timberlake, Beyonce) is Production Designer.
“I love performing in the round,” says Underwood.  “It’s so much fun for me and the band to play in every direction and creates a much more intimate and immersive experience for the audience, even in a larger arena setting.  It’s been exciting to introduce audiences to Cry Pretty and I can’t wait to bring the new album to life on this tour, along with all of the songs we love to play live.  I’m thrilled to be going out with an amazing line-up – Maddie & Tae and Runaway June are incredible artists that are going to bring even more electricity to our shows.”
“Our customers love getting early access to the best in entertainment, so we are thrilled to be partnering with Carrie Underwood as the official presale credit card of her 2019 tour,” said Jennifer Breithaupt, Global Consumer Chief Marketing Officer, Citi.
Underwood has arranged for a donation of $1 from each ticket sold for The Cry Pretty Tour 360 to be contributed to Danita’s Children, which provides a safe haven for abandoned and vulnerable children in Haiti, while encouraging families to stay together through their education and malnutrition programs.
Prior to embarking on the tour next Spring, Underwood will appear at the upcoming iHeart Music Festival in Las Vegas, as well as such international festivals as The Long Road Festival and Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park in the UK, Tuckerville in The Netherlands, and Deni Ute Muster in Australia.

Word On Waff
The city of Lagos is home to over 20 million people. The streets are always busy, and rainy days can be quite warm. Dubbed ‘The centre of excellence’, there’s an aspirational spirit to Lagos very few cities possess. WAFFLESNCREAM (abbreviated to WAFF) is a skate brand with strong intentions – to challenge preconceived notions of urban youth in Lagos city. The whole idea is the synthesis of different interests:  skateboarding, BMX, fashion, art and music. It entails a group of people that have a passion for creativity in its different forms. The brand seeks to shed light on Lagos, the forgotten heroes, and forgotten heroes to be. WAFF celebrates authenticity and particularly embraces innovation; it embodies the purist approach to individual culture.
To get a good idea of what WAFF really is, you can’t speak to just one person: at its core it is a circle of friends that have become extended family – Nif, J, Elijah Zgambo, Kofo, Slawn, Onyedi, Leonard, Nuda, Jide, Fadekemi, AJ, Jordan Thomas, Dae, Millabad, Donnika, Thai Hibbert, Be, Saidi, Bai aka Fuzxy, Anthony Wildman aka Wildest, Omi, KC, and Eva, and that’s naming a handful. WAFF has become network of like minds scattered across three continents and counting. Here’s an image of  ‘The Family’ from a past pop-up.
 Humble Beginnings, History & Formation
Speaking to AJ, a skater who did videography on the first WAFF skate tour from Leeds to London we get first hand perspective of the brand’s humble beginnings, “WAFFLESNCREAM started in Leeds as a concept, no clothes, no ‘brand name’, just skating,” he explained via Facebook messenger. “Leeds was the first experiment, simply a vibe; there was no reference to home. But Leeds had its own unique style of skating and associated lifestyle we embodied. There was a mutual want to bring something different to skateboarding, and the Bello brothers [J and Nif, who started the brand] had strong ideas of how they would like to represent skateboarding. That brought them to their ‘we’re gonna get this’ moment. The filming and photography was approached with a focus on representing this pocket of life.” This process of organic growth happened again in Lusaka, Zambia when J teamed up with Elijah to help kick start a skate scene that is now in the thousands, before its latest reenactment in Lagos.
At the time of the first skate tour, the Bello Brothers (J and Nif) were between Reading and Leeds. The original Leeds skate crew had been about their antics as young skateboarders for some time, but J had to move away to Reading for univeristy. The actual concept of WAFFLESNCREAM as a brand was created while in Reading, long after the crew was birthed. J would design apparel while Skype-ing Nif, who made sure the merchandise got to the Leeds crew. And just like that, the first wave of WAFF had begun.
Shortly after, WAFF collaborated with Redbull to go on their premier skate tour, this is when AJ was brought on board to help document the trip. He credits his loyalty to friends to WAFF eventually becoming his family, “The reason I went to London with them was no one else in Leeds really knew about them and didn't want to ‘dip their toe’ as it were, and trust them. So people saw it as just another early 2011 hype and an exploited idea. I stuck with them because the other riders [in the Leeds crew] were my close friends and eventually J became that also.”
The first skate tour was ten years ago, and since then seven collections have been released; the last release [titled ‘007’] being two years ago. It seems that for the past 2 years, WAFF has been in hibernation. After expanding the brand through regular apparel releases and pop-ups between London and Lagos, the family doubled down on their mission: to make skating a reality for the kids back “home”. When AJ is asked about the strides WAFF has taken, he tells the classic story of a diamond in the rough, “You know, people who used to snigger are now so surprised at their success and I just assumed it was only a matter of when. On the other hand, the last 10 years speak their own experience and validation. Besides this, the name can definitely turn someone's interest by merit of being so unique. It happens so often when I crack out the ‘Crack is Wack’ [an adopted slogan used in their first collection] windbreaker and everyone's like ‘yoooo’. Hahaha”.
    More Than a Skate Brand
The last editorial from 007 was shot in 2015 on Elegushi beach in Lagos, this would serve as a preview of things to come. The core of the WAFF family are now based in Lagos and thus, the focus has shifted to a large extent. But there are still representatives across the UK, USA, Ghana and Zambia, who are still loyal to the house J built.
One of the key components of the brand of WAFFLESNCREAM is its ‘facelessness’. Founder and head honcho, J, is notoriously opposed to any sort of personal press or media angling to portray WAFF as one man’s passion project. And those that have met him know just how passionate he is about it: it has quite literally been his life for a decade now. This selflessness is refreshing in a country where everything seems to be about the individual rather than the collective: from the fashion world to the oft-criticised political realm. J’s personal detachment to the general public has allowed the brand to develop an identity that is independent of any individual figurehead, and it is reaping the benefits. Behind the scenes it's a web of commitments where all the team members bring their strengths to the table. Nuda - a London based creative - has modelled and done creative direction for past editorials, Onyedi solely recorded footage for the last edit (‘Jide’), Slawn does graphic work and illustration for their coveted t-shirts, and Leonard does Illustration and photography. Most recently, Nif (who daylights as a product designer) is drawing up sketches for Lagos’ first skate park: the crowning achievement for the Bello brother.
When WAFF initially relocated to Lagos on a more permanent basis, J  and the family brainstormed on ways to integrate into the underground culture of the city. Whilst this was their home, they were still seen by some as foreigners, coming from the UK. The family soon started sporadic underground music gatherings named VIBES. Established in 2015, VIBES was a perfect platform for WAFF to make their mark in Lagos. Bringing people from different walks of life into one room. Be it avid skaters, streetwear aficionados, or simply Lagosians tired of the repetitive bottle service clubs and overpriced bars - VIBES was a safe haven. At the time, WAFF had no office, staff or skaters but VIBES was a way to connect what would eventually become family through the universal language of music. Since its inception, there have been numerous, and usually spontaneous VIBES nights with selectors from the family [Dae, Omi and Fuzxy] all gracing the decks. Special guests such as Seun Kuti and M.I. Abaga have also been in attendance, with the events varying from the back garden of friends to art galleries. The VIBES DJs recently released a mix titled Indigenous Mix Vol. 1 - wonderfully hectic collection of tracks, which currently acts as the soundtrack to the flagship store. Harking back to the early noughties, the mix is only available in CD format, exclusively at the store in Lagos.
When talking about the familial ethos to work and skating, Slawn states, “Family is what the group considers itself to be. Because we know not everyone will accept and understand what we’re doing”. It comes as no surprise to find out the crew celebrates birthdays and engagements alike. Negative sentiment associated with the ‘otherness’ of emerging cultures stays true to skateboarding in Africa. Elijah [who helped set up the first Lusaka crew] has recounted tales of being arrested and locked up in Zambia on numerous occasions, in a previous conversation with HUCK Magazine.
 Community Ties
The locals in the area around the store have mixed opinions on skateboarding. The vast majority of them are interacting with the sport for the first time and they are still trying to understand what it is exactly that these kids are doing. They mostly see skateboarding as an unnecessary hazard, but will cheer on when a skater’s ‘impossible’ stunts are landed - pun intended. For now, spectators are watching with an a gaze of amazement, but not quite admiration yet.
It takes a lot to be a skater in Lagos. Most of the city is flat so you haven’t the luxury of cruising down hills. It’s a lot of kicking and pushing to get around (this is the only way to pick up momentum when skateboarding). In addition to this, the best areas to skateboard are usually fenced off and/or have security guards. Sometimes skateboarding is wearily condoned at best, but this is without any future guarantees from proprietors of spaces the skaters frequent. Negotiating their way around to find the perfect mix of smooth ground and ‘skatable' obstacles can be challenging, but definitely makes being able to skateboard even sweeter when they can. Everyone learns a trick from someone else, which means that the skate community is connected in a spiritual way too; it nurtures feelings of camaraderie and humility amongst the skaters. Leonard rants on the challenges of skating in Lagos, “You don’t have facilities, or even good roads. You don’t have people who have trained for years with skills you can catch up to, you just have to have a fuck you attitude towards these obstacles and keep grinding. Hopefully, someone picks up a trick from you, you learn from them, and the cycle continues.”
Leonard chimes in again with a frustrated but humorous tone, “Lagos is trying to be a megacity but the parks aren’t physically accessible, nobody's making their way under a high speed bridge for r&r [a reference to the public parks built by the state in hard to reach areas]".  The WAFF crew is constantly on the lookout for interstitial spaces to skate. Sidewalks are few and far between outside the older parts of Lagos Island, which really comes down to city planning. When Nif and J break the news of a potential skate park, it’s met with as much excitement as relief.
Go Skate Day (an international skateboarding day) is being celebrated by the crew: on June 21st skate films will be screened all day at the skate shop and their second skate edit titled ‘Linda’ will be premiered. A half pipe being constructed for The 24th of June follows this; it's surely a good time for the skaters in Lagos.
  The Future of WAFF
It has been an interesting past few years for WAFF, the brand now boasts West Africa’s premier skate shop in the shape of their flagship store in Victoria Island, Lagos which opened in January 2017. With intentions of making a global impact, it’s fitting to find that the shop’s address is 234 Muri Okunola Street (+234 being Nigeria’s international code). Senegal and Ghana are two other West African countries with a skateboarding scene but have no supplies. This makes the skate shop a regional game changer.
Despite their considerable strides, international distributors do not always believe that WAFF exists, sometimes going as far as asking for pictures of people buying apparel in-store to prove it’s legit. Kofo, the store manager recalls, “Every proposal feels like a 419 scam, with the ‘Nigerian Prince’ gag and all. The landlord still doesn’t understand what we do. People in public and even parents ask why we do ‘this thing’, they can’t make sense of it”. Outside of Nigeria, there is growing list of African countries with blossoming skate scenes, but only Zambia and South Africa boast skate shops. The possibilities for skateboarding on the African continent are still presenting themselves as the sport gains popularity in little pockets.
What the store means for Lagos is a cultural meeting point for skaters and creatives alike. After the soft launch there was a 5-week ‘Friends & Family’ exhibition featuring photography, illustrations, graffiti, paintings and music from different members of The Family. The space changes to suit its needs as it grows, while keeping the environment interesting and cosy. The original back office is now a production room. Recently the till was removed completely only to be replaced by a sofa. There’s a cat that roams around, but mainly just chills in the stock room.
In a country where the WAFF crew is more of an outsider pack, only the youth and future generations may enjoy the luxuries of a developed skateboarding scene aided by private and public support. The marginalised action sports enthusiasts - the skaters, bmx’ers, and more - may soon find themselves represented on an international stage. Skateboarding was just green-lit for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the intro to an epic underdog story has been penned. The question if Nigeria (or even Africa) will have its own Cool Runnings moment will surely be answered in due time.  Other extreme sports in the region need a way to tell their own stories, but it’s the Wild West right now and there are no rules. WAFFLESNCREAM dually serves as a source of inspiration, and the benchmark to inspire other brands to come forth. London and New York are two cities that have seen skate brands revolutionise youth culture, and we can only hope Lagos is next. The infamously media-averse J finally speaks on the record when I ask him about his views on the future of skateboarding: “Africa is ready, let’s see what happens.”

April 25 - May 3, 2019
I had some misconceptions of the City of Light before I arrived, but honestly, I love it now. Paris is so beautiful I feel like I’m in a Disney movie when I’m there.
The Eurotunnel connects the UK with the rest of the continent, so it’s recommended to take the Eurostar from London St Pancras International Station to Paris Gare du Nord, but that was more expensive than easyJet (£85.38 + £16.49 for hold luggage aka a checked bag). If you’re after a cheaper way to reach Paris, budget coaches make the 10-hour journey daily.
It seems like everyone speaks perfect English but they don’t want to, which is fair, as it’s their country I’m visiting. The worst part of Paris is the ongoing cloud of cigarette smoke everywhere, and partially because of this, I smelled some of the worst body odor on others, but also some people had the best perfume I’ve ever smelled before. So, hmm.
I flew into Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), and it was super easy to take RER and the Paris Métro into the city. The RER has its own separate charge, but I bought ten tickets for the Métro to get one free ticket. Then, using Google, it was very easy to map out directions for the rest of my trip.
The first night I stayed at St Christopher's Inn Canal for €26.90. I enjoyed the location, right by Canal St Martin, where it was easy to grab a drink or bite to eat, sit by the canal and enjoy Paris the local way.
While there, I also enjoyed:
Parc des Buttes - A beautiful park that offers some of the best panoramic views over Paris. And it has a waterfall!
Parc de la Villette - This massive park houses museums, concert halls and theaters. Going down the SLIDE, and, then, seeing la geode was a highlight of my trip.
Pere Lachaise Cemetery - Spend an hour exploring one of the most prestigious and popular cemeteries in the world. Come pay your respects to Jim Morrison or Oscar Wilde.
Le Cent Quatre - An artist space hosting performances and events from all corners of the globe. Sit there and watch some local dance crews rehearse.
My favorite to place to stay was MIJE Fourcy Fauconnier Maubuisson for €28.37 a night, because of the location, within walking distance of L'As du Fallafel (the best!), Notre Dame Cathedral (can you believe the fire happened days before I arrived?!), and Saint Chapelle (simply gorgeous). I also stayed at Aloha Eiffel Tower for €27 a night, but did not like the location (more residential and so far south) or accommodation.
Just a few notes:
I was there for the riots they expected on May Day - the French being French, I suppose. Métro was not running and I wasn’t sure what would be open, so I saw Avengers: Endgame, which was a great three hours!
I ate croissants for every breakfast, baguettes with fresh cheese and cured meats for lunch, and casseroles and steak frittes for dinner. I made sure to have eclairs and meringue, but regret not having macarons or a crêpe smothered in Nutella chocolate spread from vendors on the street.
If you scheduled your days right, you could get a museum pass to save money, but I couldn’t be bothered to see so many things in a short period. A lot of Paris museums are free the first Sunday of the month, which would be great if you’re around, but I’m sure they’re very busy.
The Musée d’Orsay was disorganized in layout, in my opinion, but I thoroughly enjoyed the entire top floor. I purchased the joint ticket (€21) which included the Rodin Museum, which was just alright. Had to see The Thinker, I guess.
If you spent 60 seconds looking at each of the objects at the Louvre (€17), going steadily for eight hours a day, it would take you 75 days to see them all. It is simply enormous. I chose to book a 2-hour tour on Airbnb with Hugo ($43.61), which was well-worth it.
I personally enjoyed the bookstore, Shakespeare & Company, because I found a quiet corner to read a book for an hour -- but I understand most people find it chaotic.
I loved walking around the Montmartre district and up to Basilica of the Sacré Coeur, but didn’t make it to Moulin Rouge (nearby).
Visit the Champ de Mars and then walk around the iconic Eiffel Tower or pay to take the stairs up for views over the city (because the elevator takes too long).
Spend a day at the Palace of Versailles (€27)! Check out Kaitlyn’s guide to Versailles here. I’ll never forget the swans swimming in the grand canal at sunset.
I enjoyed drinking Angelina’s hot chocolate while walking through Tuileries Garden and then along the Seine River.
I liked viewing the ceiling of Galeries Lafayette Haussmann and jumping on the suspended trampoline.
I flew out of Paris Orly Airport (ORY) because it was closer, and a convenient €19 Uber ride. I did have to search my flight number on Google to figure out my terminal, because it was nowhere on my ticket or invoice.
I’d really love to return to Paris and visit these spots (in no particular order): Moulin rouge, Opera garnier, Refuge des fondus, Phonomuseum, the catacombs, Luxembourg Gardens, Grand Palais, Musée national des arts asiatiques, Pompidou centre (national museum of modern art), Église Saint-Eustache, Bistro Paul Bert, Merci department store, La Gaite Lyrique, Anticafe work spaces, Harry NY bar (where Bloody Marys were invented), Arc de Triomphe, Pierre Herme pastry, Popelini cupcake, and Centre Pompidou.

WEEK EIGHT (Dec 22 - Dec 28)
SYDNEY, NSW, AUS  //  MELBOURNE, VIC, AUS
As if we hadn't walked enough the previous day, the six of us hopped on the M50 bus to Coogee Beach, just southeast of Sydney, to walk along the 6km coastal trail to Bondi Beach. The walk took us through various small coves, bays, and beaches, all the while providing gorgeous views of the Australian coastline. We passed through Dolphin's Point, Gordon's Bay, Bronte Beach, Tamarama Beach, and the beautiful Waverly Cemetery. Roughly three hours later when we finally arrived at Bondi Beach, we celebrated with victory beers at Bondi Iceberg's Club. We sat on a balcony overlooking the bay, and watched surfers from our high vantage point. All that walking gave us quite the appetite, so we made tracks over to the Corner House to take advantage of their $15 Thursday pizza specials. Luckily for us, the 333 bus stopped quite close to the restaurant, so it was no hassle getting back to the apartment for a good night's rest.
The next two days were spent driving in our van from Sydney to Melbourne. We left a day earlier than Jed's family, since we had to drive with all of our luggage. The drive between the two cities reminded us a lot of California, with lots of farmland and golden rolling hillsides. To cut the long drive in half, we stopped at a free camp spot in Gundagai, near a river and some train tracks. We arrived right before sunset to the local firefighters wishing everybody a "Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas" from their truck's loudspeakers. Despite the fact that there were heaps of squawking parrots and cockatoos in the trees all around us, we were able to get a decent nights rest and start out early the next day before it got too hot. Upon arriving in Melbourne, we stopped by a Woolworth's to buy groceries for a Christmas picnic because we knew that all the shops would be closed on Christmas day. In true Australian fashion, we purchased prawns, cold ham and turkey for sandwiches, salad fixings, beer, wine, and a small salted carmel cake. After the long drive we were looking to just relax a bit, so while we waited for Jed's family to arrive from the Melbourne airport, we watched the only Christmas movie our TV had access to… A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas in 3D. Around 1am, we received a call that everyone else had finally arrived at the apartment, so we met them downstairs, helped with their bags, and went to sleep.
Merry Christmas everyone! On Christmas morning, we opened presents and listened to a playlist of holiday classics. We even learned a few Christmas songs on guitar and ukelele, and sang/played for our families (Brittany's via FaceTime). We packed our picnic supplies, deck of playing cards, and a couple Santa Hats, and decided to have our holiday lunch at the Melbourne Botanic Gardens. It was around 100°F that day, so we ate our lunch in the shade of a large tree. After a few hours had flown by, we dropped everything off back at the apartment, and decided to stroll along the Melbourne River Walk to look for a place to eat dinner. In traditional American Christmas fashion, we ultimately settled on having Chinese food at the Red Emperor.
Brittany had been fighting off a cold the previous couple days, and finally decided that she'd need a full days rest to get better. She stayed home while Jed and his family went on a free walking tour of Melbourne. The informative tour, followed a path through most of Melbourne's iconic sites and buildings, and included Chinatown, Melbourne CBD, Flinders Street Station, Carlton Gardens, and the Victoria State Library. That night back at the apartment consisted of salad, "Oh My Goodness" pizza, and a movie.
The following day, we all had a pleasant wander through the CBD to the Victoria State Library to see their exhibition on the infamous Australian bushranger (aka outlaw), Ned Kelly. A Robin Hood of sorts, Kelly was known for stealing from the Victorian government until he was finally captured in a homemade suit of armor and hung in Melbourne Gaol in 1880. The library building itself included several stories of permanent exhibition spaces, as well as a research commons, and reading dome. After lunch, the group split up for a few hours, and we killed some time going t to Hoyt's Cinema to watch Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. We all reconvened on Lygon Street, known as Melbourne's "Little Italy", for a late dinner, and then home.
All of Jed's visiting family really wanted to have a look at some indigenous Australian animals, and since many can be difficult to spot in the cities, we headed to Melbourne Zoo on the 55 Tram. We were all really impressed with the Zoo's layout and landscaping, which reminded us of being at Disneyland. The planners did a fantastic job of grouping the animals together by continent, and then making guests feel as if they were actually visiting that particular region. We were able to witness koalas, kangaroos, a lively platypus, tasmanian devils, wombats, elephants, orangutans, lions, meerkats, giraffes, zebras, etc. Lunch was eaten on a viewpoint overlooking the giraffe enclosure, and then we set off to St. Kilda beach. When the record heatwave became too much for us, we sought refuge in a restaurant called Abbey Road for some pre-dinner drinks. For Allie's birthday, we celebrated with tacos from Radio Mexico before walking the length of St. Kilda pier to see the wild Little (aka Fairy) Penguins return home to the breakwater. The penguins usually wait until sundown before swimming back to their nests. After a spectacular sunset at 8:45pm, we watched in anticipation, along with hundreds of others, for their imminent return. After waiting for over an hour, we finally saw just one little penguin, and then caught the 12 trolley back to the apartment for birthday cake and fresh fruit.

20 Top Travel Destinations for 2020
From surprising emerging destinations like South Korea and Lebanon to old favorites like Peru and New Zealand, here are our top holiday destinations for 2020 that are sure to spice up your life with adventure.
Emerging destinations
1. South Korea
Sitting pretty on the edge of the Korean peninsula and home to the ancient Gyeongbokgung palace, South Korea is waiting to be uncovered in 2020. Draped in natural beauty from the glittering skyline of Seoul to the stunning Taebaek mountains, it’s an absolute must for any adventurer.
Often overlooked by it’s larger neighbors like Japan and China, South Korea is not to be missed. Looking to explore the whole country? Check out our Korea Rail Pass and you’ll find yourself zipping your way across the lush natural landscape and digging deep into quirky K-Pop culture.
If you see one thing: Bukchon Hanok Village, located just north of Seoul, is a preserved settlement dating back to nearly 600 years ago. Here you’ll find hundreds of traditional Korean houses, hanoks, dating back to the Joseon Dynasty. Perfect for the history buffs and culture vlutures looking to learn more about traditional Korean culture.
Best time to visit: Visiting South Korea in either spring (March – June) or autumn (September – November) will find you more mild temperatures and low rainfall. If you don’t mind frigid weather, South Korean winters are great for skiing adventures!
Insider Tip: Head to Gwangjang Market (광장시장) or Namdaemun Market (남대문시장) to sample some of Seoul’s can’t miss street food such as mayak kimbap and bindaetteok.
2. Lebanon
One of the longest continually inhabited regions on Earth, Lebanon is chock-full of history and timeless landscapes. Most people don’t know about the country’s pristine Mediterranean beaches and fierce mountain ranges. If they did, they’d be flooded. And the capital, Beirut, has a seriously banging nightlife and killer food culture. The cuisine alone is worth hopping on a plane for.
If you see one thing: The Roman ruins of Baalbek are arguably the most intact the world, with pillars 19-metres tall that are arranged similarly to Athens’s Acropolis. Be sure to check the current safety status of Ras Baalbek city before travelling.
Best Time to Visit: Lebanon has a lot to offer all year round, but summer (Jun-Sep) is when the beaches are warm and the nightlife is just as hot.
Insider Tip: Like hummus? You’ve never had it quite like this. Try the sweet nuttiness of Lebanese baklava, said to be where the dish was invented. Then wash it down with a glass of jallab, a summery drink made with rose water and grape molasses.
Out and proud
3. Taiwan
Taiwan has been firmly on our radar for the last couple of years, but we fell even more in love with it when they legalised same-sex marriage last year. Safe and liberal, not to mention stunning (it was named ‘Ilha Formosa’ or Beautiful Isle by its Portuguese settlers), Taiwan is a non-mover for us. Extra points for its cycling infrastructure, top-notch trains, uncrowded surf spots and jaw-dropping national parks.
If you see one thing: Forget Taipei 101 (Taipei’s famous cloud-scraping tower and the world’s largest building from 2004 to 2010) dive into nature with Yushan National Park and soak in the vistas from Taiwan’s highest peak. The mountains on this island are seriously worthy of the hype.
Best Time to Visit: To avoid the hot and humid touristy season (July-August), the best times to visit are either April to June or September to November. Taipei’s world-famous Pride parade is usually held in October.
Insider Tip: Rainbow Family Village is a bit out of the way, but worth it for the ‘gram. Grampa Rainbow, as he’s affectionately called, began painting his military village a little bit day by day, creating an adorably cartoonish attraction.
Wallet-friendly winners
4. Jordan
A smaller and more affordable Egypt, Jordan is a winner if you’re looking for sparse red deserts, exposed rock formations and Bedouin encounters. Plus, it’s got not one, but five UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is only a short flight from the UK. And it’s been the setting for a number of big Hollywood movies. If it’s got enough adventure for Indiana Jones, it’s got enough for us!
Trek the Petra ruins, dive the Red Sea and explore its capital, Amman, in a week for less than £650 with a G Adventures tour.
If you see one thing: Petra. We know, it’s not exactly a shocker. The treasury is thought to have been a mausoleum for a king in 1 AD, but the local Bedouin people believed there are untold treasures hidden inside.
Best Time to Visit: March to May is when the temperatures tend to hang around the high teens, whereas the temperature can plummet in the evening after a 32-degree day in the summer. Talk about your hot and cold!
Insider Tip: Floating in the Dead Sea is one of those bizarre experiences that you need to feel for yourself. The lowest of the low, this stretch of blue water will be a welcome change from the red desert. If only if it was this easy to swim in every ocean…
5. South Africa
Lions and leopards and rhinos… oh my. Don’t forget about elephants and buffalo too. These are known as the Big Five, and South Africa’s Kruger National Park is one of the best places on the continent to see these guys in action. This country screams adventure as you can go surfing on the Eastern Cape Coast and bungee jumping off the Garden Route’s Bloukrans Bridge. Want something a little less adrenaline-fuelled? The hiking around Cape Town is something special (we’re looking at you, Table Mountain) and you can swim with gentle whale sharks in Sodwana Bay.
If you see one thing: Cape Town is a city tucked between mountains and ocean. After a night out in the comedy scene that gave the world Trevor Noah, pop out the next morning to greet the local penguins and haul yourself up the incredible Lions Head mountain.
Best Time to Visit: May to September is the dry season when animals congregate around watering holes, making for class wildlife spotting.
Insider Tip: If you swing by after the winter rainfall, Namaqualand springs to life with sweeping orange wildflowers. This only happens once a year, but if the fates don’t align, the national park is still stunning in August and September.
6. Slovenia
So you want the Italian Alps and classic German forests? Slovenia is your answer, and it’s a helluva lot cheaper. More than half of the country is still covered in trees, but let’s talk castles. Ljubljana is a gorgeous and quintessentially European town with a castle proudly looming over it. But if you want something a little less urban, look no further than Predjama Castle – it’s built into a cave in a classical Renaissance style. As if the fairytale vibes weren’t enough, the king there was also known to be quite the Robin Hood.
Slovenia is also home to the Planica Nordic Center, which boasts the biggest ski jumping hill in the world. Not keen on skiing? The centre also has a wind tunnel, cycling paths and a zip line – it’s the steepest in the world and (safely) gives you the sensation of being a ski jumper.
If you see one thing: Lake Bled is framed by mountains, rimmed by forest and dotted with picturesque little churches that are reflected in the clear waters. Jump in for a paddleboard or go for a leisurely walk along the shore.
Best Time to Visit: May to September is dry and ideal for hiking. But if it’s snow you’re after, go between December and March.
Insider Tip: Velika Planina is a Nordic Middle-Earth with grassy plains stretched over lazy rolling hills. A pasture plateau at 1,666m above sea level, it’s like hiking through heaven.
7. Bulgaria
Bulgaria is most commonly known for its cheap but snow-laden ski resorts, including Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo. But if you’re also on the lookout for a European bargain beach break, you’ll also find it on the golden beaches along Bulgaria’s Black Sea Coast.
New on Europe’s hipster radar is Sofia, where an emerging food, cocktail and street art scene should mean it shoots to the top of your weekend break list for 2020. Although in your search for jam jar cocktails, don’t forget about the old-time treasures, such as The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Square of Religious Tolerance.
If you see one thing: The Belogradchik Rocks are towers of red rock with a fortress perched on top. It’s hard to know if the view is better from the top or bottom—might as well do both!
Best Time to Visit: The shoulder seasons are from April to May and September to October. The windows may seem small, but you’ll have sights to yourself and the prices of tourist attractions are lower.
Insider Tip: The cuisine is a marriage of Mediterranean and Balkan. You must try banitsa, a baked pastry with regional feta cheese and eggs. Wash it all down with a drink at a nearby mehana (aka pub).
Green gems
8. Costa Rica
We love Costa Rica for its commitment to wellness and eco-conscious tourism. In fact, by the end of 2021, it aims to be the first plastic-free and carbon-neutral country. The cities and towns are a lot flashier than Costa Rica’s Central American neighbours, but its urban areas don’t compromise the incredible biodiversity of the jungles and coastlines. With over half a million species roaming about, keep an eye out for colourful birds and mischievous monkeys while you go about your jungle treks, yoga sessions and surf camps.
If you see one thing: Arenal Volcano National Park is a beautiful beacon glowing green above the horizon. You’ve got the country’s largest lake and dozens of waterfalls around, plus the exfoliating ash is good for your skin.
Best Time to Visit: December to April is the dry season and will undoubtedly deliver the best weather despite being a little busier with other travellers.
Insider Tip: The mantra of this country is ‘Pura Vida’, meaning ‘pure life’. It’s thrown around a lot, but it’s a call to wellness and being good to yourself and the environment around you. Learn it, live it, love it.
9. New Zealand
Welcome to Middle Earth… whoops. We mean New Zealand. With stunning mountain ranges and an actual Hobbiton to visit, the two are basically synonymous anyway. Adventure isn’t far from windy Wellington to adrenaline-fuelled Queenstown, the birthplace of bungee jumping.
Experience Māori culture by witnessing the roaring haka before an All Blacks game or devour a Māori feast in Rotorua. Show a little love to the environment by responsibly cruising around mountains in an electric campervan, brought to us by our green-obsessed friends over at Britz.
If you see one thing: Tongariro Crossing was voted one of the world’s best day hikes and was used as a filming location in Lord Of The Rings. It’s surprisingly accessible and feels miles away from civilisation.
Best Time to Visit: March to May is when the crowds thin and prices fall, but the cold of winter hasn’t settled in yet.
Insider Tip: Head down south to Stewart Island for prime kiwi-spotting opportunities – and we do mean the birds, not the locals. New Zealand’s shy, feathered mascot is delightfully bizarre and needs to be seen to be believed.
Non-movers
10. UK
You’re thinking of London right now, aren’t you? We agree London is fab as it holds the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, the London Eye, Big Ben and many, many more. But worse than missing out on a London monument is never leaving the capital at all! Give the out-and-proud Brighton a go and stroll down the pier or hang around Bristol’s stylish Clifton neighbourhood. On your way to Liverpool for your Beatles pilgrimage, stop off in Wales, the Lake District or venture further afield to Scotland for incredible hiking.
If you see one thing: The British Museum is one of the wonderfully free attractions in London and is chock-full of artefacts from all over the world. You could spend days here!
Best Time to Visit: March to May is when the UK sprouts with green and the tourist rush doesn’t happen until June.
Insider Tip: Glen Coe is the most popular area of the Scottish Highlands and is breathtaking throughout the year. The grassy pastures stretch and surround fearsome cliffs – it’s worth the hype.
11. Peru
The government wisely puts a limit on how many people can hike the famous Inca Trail per year, but there are so many other amazing hikes through the Andes that are less crowded and aid efforts to combat overtourism. Check out the seven-day Lares Trek, the five-day Salkantay Trek, and the intrepid 12-day Choquequirao to Machu Picchu Trek. Each goes by massive Incan ruins that are more common than you think.
If you see one thing: The Rainbow Mountains have recently been revealed due to a receding glacier. You’ll be rewarded after an exhilarating hike as the natural minerals create technicolor stripes down the cliffsides.
Best Time to Visit: April to May and September to October is prime time to be outdoors and hiking under the not-too-unforgiving sun.
Insider Tip: Kuélap is a more environmentally conscious alternative to Machu Picchu and overlooks the pretty Utcubamba Valley. Plus, you’ll basically have the entire ancient town to yourself.
12. Japan
The Olympics are on their way and we can’t wait! Tokyo will be in full swing in 2020, but it’s important not to have your blinders on. If you’re craving city thrills of late-night all-you-can-drink karaoke, shop-til-you-drop arcades and driving through the streets in your very own Mario Kart, opt for Osaka instead during this busy year.
We know that nearby Kyoto and Nara are calling you, but you can do your part to combat overtourism by opting for tranquil Kamakura. The coastal city has hundreds of temples and shrines as well, plus Japan’s largest outdoor Buddha and an epic surf beach!
If you see one thing: Get out to the Fuji five lakes. Climbing Fuji-san is fine (if not crazy crowded), but it can only be climbed two months of the year. The lakes are open year-round and reflect Fuji in their waters on a clear day.
Best time to go: March to June is mild, typhoon-free, and full of festivals to celebrate the budding of plum and cherry blossoms. The Japanese take their pink tree flower worship seriously with all-day picnics during hanani.
Insider tip: Get out of town to Koya-san, a mountaintop Buddhist monastery complex where you can stay overnight and eat the same seasonal meals as the monks do. The temples are extravagant, but pictures are strictly forbidden at Okunoin Temple – yes, it’s really that good.
13. Turkey
Turkey is absolutely saturated with history and ruins, and it’s easy and cheap to get around too. We know you’re already going to hit up Istanbul and Cappadocia because who doesn’t fancy a hot-air balloon ride or browsing the local markets for a new rug? But get off the beaten path by sussing out mountainside ruins of the Lycian Rock Tombs and the Myra Necropolis. You can walk freely inside the ornate cave dwellings that overlook the water and show some love for the local communities at the same time.
If you see one thing: The Hagia Sophia of course. This museum will tell you its history as both a church and a mosque, then enchant you with its intricate calligraphy and Byzantine art.
Best Time to Visit: April to May and September to November is when the weather is warm but not too hot.
Insider Tip: Take a dip in the natural hot springs of the Pamukkale Water Terraces, where white stone pools hold warm, ashy-blue waters. The cliffs look like they’re covered in snow, but they’re really 35–100 degrees!
14. Philippines
Get in touch with your resting beach face in the Philippines. There are over 7,000 islands with pristine beaches ready to help you achieve pure Filipino bliss. After you’ve had enough of snorkelling and made friends with hundreds of species of fish, travel by 4WD over lunar landscapes to trek to the summit of Mt. Pinatubo and deep into the sand dunes of Paoay.
If you see one thing: Get to know the ancient practices of the Banaue tribes by trekking through local northern villages and past 2,000-year-old rice terraces.
Best Time to Visit: November to April is the dry season that won’t threaten to rain on your parade.
Insider Tip: The Asik-Asik Falls only reached international attention back in 2010. This lush mountainside has dozens of beautiful waterfalls spilling down it.
Back open for business
15. Puerto Rico
Short on time? No problem! Puerto Rico’s compact, traveler-friendly size means you can a lot in the space of a week. Despite its small proportions, this island packs a punch with its historical landmarks dating back several centuries, and sandy beaches that stretch for miles. It’s also one of the best places in the world to see turtles, dolphins and blue whales, so set off on a marine adventure or volunteer at a conservation project.
If you see one thing: Ok ok… we couldn’t pick one! Puerto Rico’s must-sees are El Morro, a six-story fortress dating back to the 1500s, and frog-spotting in El Yunque National Rainforest.
Best Time to Visit: Mid April to June. Historically the best weather is in the winter time, which tends to be the busiest. The rainy summer weather is typically considered the off season.
Insider Tip: While most tourists head to Puerto Rico for Spring or Winter break, we think the best time of year is actually in January during the San Sebastián street festival in Old San Juan. From parades, music, dancing, food, and local artisan goods, there’s so much to see!
Find your next adventure on one of our many tours, or give us a call to lock in a flight with a small deposit to one of these top holiday destinations for 2020.
