For today’s Exhibit of the Day, let’s visit one of the finest large mineral crystals ever found. This is the Tarugo, a dazzling elbaite tourmaline. This large gem measures 33.5 inches (85 cm) in length and weighs 180 pounds (82 kg)! The Tarugo is notable for its exceptional quality and unique cranberry color.
See it up close in the Museum’s Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals!

Rain or Shine Earrings
The "Rain or Shine" earrings were hand-crafted by twin Master Jewelers David and Michael Robinson of David Michael Jewels. The playful design was inspired by the rapidly changing weather of their native New Zealand.
Tumblr media
Both earrings have hand-carved Paspaley Pearl shells (mother of pearl) depicting silver lined clouds, and are centered around an unheated sapphire of around 9 carats each, one yellow and one light blue.

The sunshine earring also incorporated beautiful yellow diamonds, colorless baguette diamonds and yellow tourmalines. While the rain earring used beautiful blue aquamarines and colorless diamonds. Variously set in gold, platinum and silver. Earring backs include both post and Omega clips.

we truly don't appreciate how good scarlet was when it came to names. pyrite being named after something that's known as fool's gold? ingenious. just the name peril? very badass. vermilion being a shade of red like scarlet? ruby also being a shade of red?? ruby also being a gemstone, which is what tourmaline is??? literally so iconic.
