four months into getting to know each other, shouto finds him by touya-nii's shrine. his little brother gently sits down beside him and offers a small prayer.

"yumi-nee-san," natsuo wonders if his little brother will ever drop the second honorific, "said you were the closest to him," shouto says quietly.

after all these years and the use of past tense still makes his heart break. 'you are the closest to him' he wants to correct but that wouldn't make sense anymore. touya-nii hasn't been talked about in the present tense since before middle school. does shouto even remember a time before nii-san's dea-, disappearance?

"yeah, i was," he says, eyes never leaving the photo. it's the one nii-san took for sixth-grade picture day. kaa-san had got him all dressed up and he had hated it. somedays he thinks if he looks close enough, he'll see the displeased pout on nii-san face. "why?"

his little brother says nothing for a long time, back ramrod straight. natsuo has no idea what's going on in that head of his. shouto has so few tells that he's practically a blank slate. natsuo hates his father.

then slowly and so quietly, he has to strain his ears to catch it, shouto stammers out, "do-, do you think he would have liked me?"

natsuo's immediate reaction is to say 'yes'. yes, of course, touya-nii would've loved you. yes, of course, touya-nii would've crossed the heavens for you. yes, of course, he would've loved you shouto; you're his precious younger brother.

but he remembers the way nii-san used to spit out shouto's name when he was a kid. the way his brother's mouth wrapped around it, the face he made, like he had just eaten something disgusting. he remembers the way touya-nii had become almost crazed by the end, hellbent on proving himself the rightful heir to their shitty father's legacy. he remembers the way touya-nii had said, "i just need to prove that i'm better than him,"; the 'him' said with such bitterness and contempt.

he knows instantly that touya-nii would not have liked shouto. that this house and his father would have twisted any ounce of love, nii-san would've held towards shouto, into jealousy and hatred.

(this house may have ruined all of them but it only ever broke two of them.)

natsuo can't say any of that to shouto. his kind little brother who forgave him for not being there. his amazing little brother who falls in love with every cat he sees. his wonderful little brother who has a wickedly dry sense of humor. his soft baby brother who loves him and yumi-nee with a passion. his tender-hearted baby brother who still worries if his long-gone older brother would've liked him.

no, natsuo can't tell shouto that nii-san wouldn't have like him. shouto will internalize it like he does with everything else that hurts him. and there is already so much that hurts shouto, he will not add to that list. his baby brother smiles these days, nothing big like his green-haired friend, but quiet, lovely, ones all the same. shouto talks more these days. they have dinner together when natsuo is home. his baby brother laughs now. it's a miracle like nothing else in this world.

shouto is the best thing to come out of their house and natsuo will die before he ever hurts his little brother. so instead, he curls an arm around shouto's shoulders and pulls him into a loose side-hug.

"of course!" he lies cheerfully, ignoring the ache in his chest, "touya-nii would've loved you. you're his — and our —precious little brother after all. there is no universe in which he wouldn't have loved you."

the tips of his baby brother's ears go red and his pleased little answering smile makes the ache of lie go away. natsuo will tell a thousand more lies if it means shouto never stops smiling like that.

It's meta time! So let's spit some facts today.

*SPOILERS FROM THE MANGA ABOUT SHIGARAKI, DABI AND TOGA'S PAST.

You know Midoriya Izuku wants to save Shigaraki Tomura, right? Well, but you are not sure if anyone else from the League is going to get a redemption arc. I'm not sure about it, because Horikoshi can always do as he please and go wild, but for me, at least Toga and Dabi have a set up for a redemption arc.

And they have an specific person to help then with that. You know why? Parallels.

Tomura parallels Izuku all the way.

"You can't be a hero because you don't have a quirk?" check.

"Now I have a quirk but it's too strong for my and its destroying my body?" check.

"My mentor was pressuring me so much that I almost killed myself once or twice, so I'm learning how to do this my own way?" check.

"We were chosen to carry a burden we're too young to be carrying and now we're stuck trying to solve the past mistakes of our generation?" check.

And there's more. Their connection with Nana Shimura. The way they formed their found family at the same time. The way at the beginning they were trying to win over an impossible enemy and ended up with their arms and legs hurt pretty bad. There's a lot to unpack on here, okay? So let's keep moving.

Yet, Shigaraki and Izuku are not the only parallels between heroes and villains in this story.

Uraraka Ochaco and Toga Himiko are parallels too. Young ladies that are surpassing their families expectations, because in the bottom of their hearts they want to make them proud. They're also fighting to become what they want to be, they're in love with Izuku because he inspires them. They want to make the world a better place, they want to protect their friends, they're enthusiastic and hardworking and very powerful. They are clever and fast, they don't even need their quirks to defeat you.

But most important: Ochaco is the person Toga goes to when she needs to talk or when she's trying to understand how hero society works.

Time and time again, Toga has opened up to Ochaco because she feels if someone can get her, it's this wanna-be-hero that's so much like her. There's respect and admiration in there. Ochaco respects Toga too, she sees her as an equal. So they can talk and understand the other. Well, maybe Ochaco has some problems with understanding Toga, but the more they interact, the more Ochaco is able to see Toga for what she is and not for what people told her she was.

Same goes for Dabi when it come to his parallels with Todoroki Shoto.

If there's someone that knows what Dabi went through, it's Shoto. Same settings, same problems, same mistakes from Endeavor. The only difference is that Shoto was able to say no and was given a way out, because his family was traumatized after what happened to Touya.

Even when their personalities are different, Shoto is the one who sees Dabi for what he is.

I've already explained in this post that Shigaraki, Dabi and Toga are unable to cry most of the time and that it is a wat of dehumanizing them. The minute they cry, that become human again and the heroes are able to see they need saving.

Izuku saw Shimura Tenko crying. He saw the thing no one else is able to see, the representation of Shigaraki Tomura not as the villian, but as the victim.

Ochaco saw Toga Himiko crying, even if only for a brief second. She saw pass Toga's mask, she saw the girl that only wants to be saved, the girl that's trying so hard to fit in, the girl that only wanted to be valid. Ochaco saw not the villian, but the victim.

And so did Shoto with Dabi. Everyone else can imagine what Dabi went through, but he doesn't have to. He knows. He suffered that way too. He knows better than anyone what his father is capable of. He has a sacr proving their mother is also to blame, for she was negligent. He knows what is like to be isolated from society and to be so caught up in your anger that you can't see anything else.

And he saw that in Dabi. No, he saw himself in Dabi. He saw himself when he was at the sport festival, too busy thinking he needed to win, to busy thinking of his father and how much he hated him. He saw someone who needs to hear "this is your power" to be free, because Dabi didn't have an Izuku to snap him out of it. He didn't have a friend to help him find a way out. He has the League of Villains, but Dabi refuses to let them in mostly by fear, but also because what would they know?

But Shoto knows. That's why after that, on the hospital, when the whole Todoroki family gets together to talk about Dabi, every member of the family calls him that: Dabi. Except Shoto. He says Touya-nii.

"Let's stop Touya-nii together".

The rest of the family, because they want the Touya that they remember, even when they let that Touya died, they can't see Dabi for what he is. Shoto can. Shoto has no memory, but he's been there in almost every encounter with Dabi.

If there's something every victims wants is for someone to see them and reassure them. When you've been abuse as a child, you are not sure of yourself. People will make you think you're overreacting becuase your family will always take care of you, you know? They love you.

That's bullshit, but okay. The kid doesn't know that. So they need to hear someone telling them "you're right and they're wrong, your opinion and your hurt is valid, I see you, I see what they did to you".

For years now, Shigaraki, Toga and Dabi lived in the shadows, unrecognized. Now, Izuku, Shoto and Ochaco finally see them.

Not the villains, not the demons, not the people they made in their minds based on the media and the things other people told them.

Izuku knows Shigaraki better than anyone else. In fact, apart from AFO and Doctor Ujiko, Izuku is the only person in the universe that knows Tomura at all. "You look like someone who needed saving".

Ochaco is the only person that knows Toga. The things Toga has told them, no one else have heard them. And Ochaco saw Toga for the girl she is right there, a girl her age wanting thing Ochaco wants too. "Right there, in that moment... She was crying". A human capable of feeling, not a demon.

And finally, Shoto is able to see the tears Dabi can't cry. He was face to face with his brother, so close he was almost dying. But Dabi didn't kill him, Shoto saw that. Dabi doesn't even care about Shoto, even when his family told him Touya tried to kill him. No, deep inside, it's all Endeavor's fault and Dabi knows it. Alone with himself, Dabi talks about Fuyumi and Natsuo with affection, he calls Rei mom even. Still, he calls Endeavor by his whole name, not father. And when it come to Shoto, he only says his name, like he's a stranger, because they are strangers. Shoto and Dabi doesn't have a real connection yet. The only thing that brings them together and the only thing that keeps them apart is his father. “Let's stop Touya-nii together”. He believes in Touya's redemption.

The three little heroes do. They began to see life's not about villains and heroes, but about victims and misunderstandings and about people with different opportunities. Izuku is the one who sees it clearer. He thinks about all the time he could have avoid things getting worse, if he only knew what the villains were going thought.

It only takes one bad day, after all.

One bad day and someone who was meant to be a hero becomes a terrible villian.

And it takes a million days, but someone who used to be a villian can also become a hero too.

It wasn’t fair…

Natsuo would’ve done anything - given anything to have his brother back. When Touya died Natsuo had a hard time accepting it. He felt lost during that time, unsure what his role was in the world now. He’d become so dependent on his big brother giving him a purpose. He was the one that made Touya feel better, as much as he could. He was the one Touya trusted the most, the one that cared about him the most.

So he used to beg and plead to no one in particular - just throwing out his wishes into the universe for anyone or anything to hear him - to just please please please bring Touya back. He’d do all the chores without complaining, he’d never sneak a cookie before dinner again - anything anything, to bring his brother back.

So it wasn’t fair. It wasn’t fair.

He wanted his brother back, but not like this.

Not like this.

His face crumpled in despair, a heaving sob wracking his entire body as he stared at Dabi, this man that claimed to be his brother, but he couldn’t be, he couldn’t be.

He didn’t want this.

“You can’t-” he starts to speak, words coming out heavy and thick before they’re cut off with another sob. He furiously wipes away his tears and takes a shuddering breath before trying again.

“You can’t come here and- and expect me to believe that...Touya-nii…you can’t do that...not now- not after-” He can’t finish his thoughts, the words becoming increasingly more difficult to force out past the tightness in his throat.

“It’s not fair.”
