Derusting tutorial! -Ish.....
This is one of those things that I would like to make a video of but I just can’t do videos.
Sometimes you know a pony has rust inside because you can see rust coming out of the base of the tail, turning the hair that distinctive ruddy orange.
Sometimes it’s seeing discoloration from the outside.
Tumblr media
Sometimes it’s rust or black mildew visible in the rooting holes on the mane.
Tumblr media
And sometimes, there’s a rattle when you shake them that sounds like sand or a handful of little rocks.
That’s the tail washer having disintegrated.
Tumblr media
Sea Breeze had everything but visible rust seeping out of her tail hole.
I popped her head off (she was cooperative! I always appreciate that), pulled out her tail, and took a look inside.
Tumblr media
It’s difficult to get photos inside a pony with my phone, but you can see she’s pretty evenly coated with black mildew, rust, and some rusty chunks of metal here and there from her tail washer.
So! Here’s how I fix this.
I put the pony in a plastic container just big enough that they can fully lie down in with their head off, and deep enough that you can fully submerge them.
I only use these containers (which I thrifted and they were really gross at the time, but ponies aren’t the only gross things I like to clean) for derusting ponies and soaking doll/pony clothes.
These are not exact measurements, I just happen to have an old baby formula scoop in my Oxy Clean, but toss about a tbl/1 oz of Oxy Clean in there.
Tumblr media
And add boiling hot water. You do need hot water. It’ll help kill off anything living inside the body and you need the body to be as soft and malleable as possible throughout this process.
Tumblr media
The tools I use most often to scrub rust and mildew out of ponies is a toothbrush that I’ve cut the bristles shorter on (this allows it to get into the legs without the bristles ending up bent and useless), and long-handled cotton swabs.
I like to squish the head with the toothbrush to make sure it’s all full of Oxy water, and will flip the body after it’s been in there for a moment so that every bit of ick is coated and the hot water can start working it loose from the vinyl.
Tumblr media
I can’t take photos of this part of the process because I need both hands, but you put on some gloves, pick up your pony, and start scrubbing.
Scrub inside the head, scrub the roots of the hair both inside and out if you need to, scrub all around and inside the body squishing and pulling and scrunching so you can get into every little crevice and dislodge that grime.
If you’re lucky it’ll all come off without having left rust stains behind.
Rinse them out every time they start to cool and become harder, then toss them back into the hot Oxy soak to soften again.
Keep scrubbing with the toothbrush and rinsing until everything you can get off is off. You may need a swab to get into the tips of their hooves (very helpful if they’re hot and soft as can be for the legs), ears, noses, unicorn horns, and if they’re a pegasus, scrunch them up really well and get into the tips of their wings with cotton swabs.
Tumblr media
If you have mildew coming out of the rooting holes, don’t forget to part the mane and scrub the vinyl between the rows.
Also don’t forget to do that if you’re deflocking.
Tumblr media
All clean!
About the tail...
I prefer bar soap for this part. It’s about control, since liquid soap is drippy.
You’ll also need more Oxy Clean which acts like a scouring powder, here.
Tumblr media
What I do is split the tail so it lies flat, then wet the toothbrush, scrub up a little of the bar soap (again, this bar of soap is ONLY used for this so I don’t have to worry about it being rusty or gross), dip it into the Oxy Clean to pick up some powder, and scrub.
Tumblr media
Like before, keep repeating this process of scrubbing, picking up soap and Oxy Clean, and rinsing until the rust is gone. I like to take a paper towel and wipe up the rusty yuck water on the counter every time I rinse the tail, too. Luckily Sea Breeze’s tail crimp wasn’t rusty.
Tumblr media
And that’s it! It does take some time, more or less depending on how bad off the pony is.
Oxy Clean is rough on the hair, so you will need to condition their hair before restyling.
Tumblr media
There is still some mildew grime in the rooting holes. There’s no way to get in there to scrub it all out without removing the hair. The long, hot Oxy soak will help to kill it off, at least.

Youngest Sis has a puppy who unfortunately likes to chew; niece's hedgehog was a victim. I've done repairs before but facial reconstruction? I was wiling to try.
Tumblr media
Here she is after 3 baths (I forgot the stain remover the first time and it took 2 rounds with it. The face fur is a light gray; I had a similar pile white that would work. I used felt for the paws and ears. I'm just thankful the nose area wasn't damaged as that would have made things more difficult.
Tumblr media
Voila! Ironically the hardest part was making my eye match the other; I ruined the first face piece as I kept trying to make it perfect lol. I left the ear/paw stubs in place to sew the new ones over (I recovered the one good paw too so it would match). The left ear doesn't have a base as it was completely missing; I did put some stuffing in it so it wouldn't be flat-flat. I think she came out great; niece agreed:)

Doll hospital, dog toy round:
Tumblr media
Whale desperately needed a wash, restuffing, and tear repair. Per usual, I repurposed stuffing, crinkle paper, and squeakies from donor toys.
Tumblr media
All fixed up! Got a new squeaky fish friend to go with, too, since the last mini has long left this world

Hey, how do you clean white or nearly white Sylvanian families figures like the dalmatians or a panda ? They are grey :(
Hi hi,
I am not an expert, and I have not cleaned a LOT of white Sylvanians. Other people on here probably have better advice!
I generally run water warm, not hot!! get a little dish soap or no tears shampoo, and gently massage it into the flock with fingertips, VERY gently, because too much friction or heat will make the flock come off. I have also seen people use a soft kids toothbrush instead of fingertips. Then I rinse them a LOT, you could probably repeat these steps if the flock seems pretty stable or the figure is very dirty, and dry.
Once they are dry, I wrap some sticky tape around a finger, sticky side out, and use it like a little lint roller to get the little bits of dark fluff to stick to the tape.
If they have staining, like felt tip or somethig noticeable that isn't coming off, I have had success (considering mine are more for display than play) flaking some white chalk pastel into powder and using a soft makeup brush to add layers of white to the stained areas. If you go slowly it's easier to control how the chalk pastel blends or stands out, depending on how white the figure is.
I hope this helps. Mint white Sylvanians are flawlessly blinding white like the flippin sun, so it's very hard to get them back to perfectly white. But you should see an improvement.

Attempting to repair Big Bird! (Sadly he has marker all over his beak!)
We tried acetone, and alcohol and sadly neither got the marker off :( so the next step is to see if maybe some paint over it would work! (We’re gonna try enamel!)
if you have any suggestions let me know!!

This was a complete pain in the butt.
I found this G1 Waterfall Play Set on eBay for $15.
Tumblr media
Obviously yellowed and broken. Sprinkles and Duck Soup were included, but not any of the accessories.
Tumblr media
Deyellowing the cloud wasn’t that bad, though as you can see it’s still a little yellow. I didn’t want to leave it under the UV light for too long and can resort to spray paint some day if I decided it needs to be truely white.
That was the easy part.
Tumblr media
Reattaching this very thin, brittle, load bearing plastic clip was not easy at all.
NOTHING I have would stick to that yellow plastic. Not super glue, not 2-part epoxy, everything I tried fell right off again.
On the other hand, the sticker was very easy to remove and I put it on a bit of paper covered in packing tape so that I could just as easily reapply it, later.
-
I thought I finally had it with the epoxy but as soon as I put the poorly-balanced cloud back on, the putty separated from the plastic and I was back at square one.
Then I was like...
You know, the one thing I HADN’T tried yet was hot glue.
I didn’t WANT to use hot glue. I wanted it to look as close to new as possible when it was done.
But I used the hot glue.
I used a lot of hot glue.
Tumblr media
Then I slapped the sticker back on.
Tumblr media
It’s ugly, but it worked. And yes, the pumps do work, but you might be able to see that the nozzle on the back of the rain cloud, where that yellow tubing connects, is actually broken off and now missing. I did get that reattached but then it came off again AND crumbled.
Tumblr media
Since the yellow tubing now had to stretch a bit to fit on the nozzle, there is a pinch at the bottom that will likely result in cracking and leaking at some point down the line. Right now the tubing is still soft and pliable, and tubing isn’t all that difficult to replace.
So now we’ve gone from this:
Tumblr media
To this.
Tumblr media
So now I own my very first G1 My Little Pony play set at the age of 42, and have no idea where I’m going to put it... Nor do I know if I will try to get the missing accessories.
Tumblr media
Sprinkles came out very good. She’s still a bit purple and her hair is glossy smooth.
Tumblr media
Duck Soup is Duck Soup.

Clurgery (Clown Surgery)
Tumblr media
This is Tiny Tim.
Tiny Tim was added to the family during a flea market trip (along with his big sister, Spoon) and I got him for free. He is missing a foot and is leaking sand from his lil body.
This is a how-to lesson on how to perform surgery on your clown without a medical license but WITH a degree in clownery
STEP ONE: NAKEY
Tumblr media
U must undress the little man in question to reach the source of the problem.
In order to do this, take off the frill collar and you can slip the clothes over their head but in Tiny Tim's case, his lil shirt is attached to his neck so I snipped the seam on one side and pulled it up.
STEP TWO: ASSESS THE DAMAGE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As pictured above, there is a small hole in the side that is leaking sand. Thankfully it's not too much so I don't have to put sand IN, because I have no sand. He also has one foot.
STEP THREE: SEWING
Tumblr media
Measure to your desired length and sew up and down across the hole. U don't have to worry about making it pretty since it's under the clothes, just make it sturdy so it doesn't come out. The problem here is the fabric frayed too much and split over the stitching, so I went a little further in than the original stitching. Snip that baby off and admire your handy work by giving the little guy a jostle. No sand!
STEP FOUR: LIMB
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cut out two long U shapes from a thin white fabric. Sew around the edge, turn inside out and stuff it with a tiny bit of any old plushie fluff. Then sew it onto the body upside-down as pictured so it matches the other when he sits. You don't HAVE to tho, since its covered.
STEP FIVE: DRESS
Tumblr media
Put your little man back in his clothes and put their frilly collar back on. All better!! You can now place your mended little guy with his new family :o)

Fijit Friends Repair Log
The hyperfixation continues.
I found Logan...but I had to get rid of her squishy silicone casing. It was literally melting. I still have her foam layer, but it isn't in the best condition either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So this is what she looks like on the inside. Her face and stomach lights aren't working, but she's fully functional otherwise. And loud. Very loud. I forgot how loud these things are. I still love her though.
I'm thinking of sort of turning her torso into a spandex beanbag. Like this:
Tumblr media
That way, she'll still be stretchy and squishy, but she won't melt all over my bookshelf. I also ordered a replacement accessory set for her; my dogs got to the previous one when I was still a dumb kid.
Additionally, I have Zinzie, one of the Newbies.
Tumblr media
I'm currently waiting on new batteries for her, but I think she still works. It would be great if I could somehow clean her rubber casing, too.
I saved Skippa, my Yippit, from battery corrosion. I neutralized the alkaline battery fluid with white vinegar, then cleaned the area with rubbing alcohol. She's completely functional, and all of her lights still work.
Tumblr media
And I ordered Spinrose (one of the Shimmies) for myself as a treat for getting A LOT done this week. Seriously. A lot. I hope I'm never stuck doing homework problems for 5+ hours in a row, multiple days in a row, ever again.
Tumblr media
Her listing says that she works and will come with batteries, and the pictures seem to back it up. I'm excited. :)

Can you guys help please? I asked r/ActionFigures too but I'm scared of them and no one there answered yet.
This is Rabbit. Her foot is broken-- it doesn't stay put on the ball joint (peg???) I can briefly reattach it but any movement or try to reposition makes it fall off again. Does anyone know how to fix this kinda injury? Thanks in advance.
