Ray grinded his teeth at the realization that this was the only course of action they had. If not then…

Then Emma would die.

Emma, with scraped knees and a chipped tooth smile against a face stained with freckles. Emma who still raced her siblings to breakfast and pretended to lose. Emma, staying up for hours to learn the morse code in Minerva’s books, falling asleep in the library. Emma with burn marks on her calloused hands. Emma, auburn hair stained with blood, the smoldering house behind them still not quite burning as much as the determination in her eyes.

Emma who got into fights knew she couldn’t win if there was even a chance of saving someone. Emma, promising to strangers she had never even met, that they would all get out of this hunting ground alive.

I don’t care what it takes, Ray vowed as Emma grew colder by the second, so unlike sunlit days dragging him from the shade, with warm smiles and soft blankets and bitter tea and old books.

I won’t let that happen again.

I’m not going to let you die!

lyrics for every chapter come from Heirloom by sleeping at last! worked really hard on this fic, hope u enjoy! (I personally have a bit of a hard time writing emotional stuff especially for side characters that didn’t get that much development but I did my best to stay in character and it was a fun exercise!)

July 7th - Zack’s Birthday

#the promised neverland #tpn manga #tpn zack #zack #my edits #this is absolutely a result of reading the GP arc once again and rediscovering how much i really love this lad. so naturally this is gonna #lead me to create the other two of the trio when the time comes. still think it's crazy that he's barely around during his most active arc #as he mostly shows up in people's thoughts/flashbacks instead. wouldve been great if the culvitidala arc wasnt all time skipped too so he #couldve had more moments. doesnt change the fact that i love him tons!! also chose that red from his bandana because i noticed a fair amount #of these edits mainly have a lot of blue. so i switched it up for him. he's special..and deserves a higher place in my personal top ten.

Piggybacking off the previous reblog I love scenarios of Ray acting as a memory keeper for the Grace Field kids regarding older siblings who have long passed away or even just memories of themselves when they were younger. You cannot tell me it didn’t come up at least once during their journeying across the demon world for months.

My super indulgent specific one is him being injured ~somehow~ during their trekking that results in him developing a fever. It’s serious enough where he experiences some delirium that causes him to start rambling about Susan, and it ends with him trailing off and quietly crying because he’s obviously not in the best mental state and her death is so palpably raw in this moment.

Emma, Don, and Gilda are at a loss because 1) they miss her too and 2) because they’ve never seen Ray like this; it's like seeing a mountain crumble. Even if it could be easily ascertained how he felt based on his actions during the escape arc‚ he's never freely talked about the subject, so there's a mix of guilt in the air for being privy to this when he's not all present.

But once he's recovered, it does lead to those kinds of conversations being more common, and sharing the happier memories is healing for Ray because they're not stagnating trapped inside him, but almost having new life breathed into them with the reactions and comments from the others.
