The peace ring Materpost / Timeline

The peace ring

was first seen in 2013 when Harry and Louis left Rosso after a dinner there. For this reason it’s head canon that this is one of the rings that Louis gave to Harry.

For years he wore it on the middle finger of his right hand. Harry wore it all the time and he very rarley took it off, aside from when he was working out/running or travelling/working (he didn’t always wear the peace ring for photoshoots but he wore it more often than not - for example the ring was there during Gucci or Vogue photoshoots)

For a long time he used to wear the peace ring in a special combination with his rose ring (here you can read about how Louis started following “The Great Frog” - the ring was from this shop - on Twitter just before Harry started wearing the rose ring):

This combinations symbolized Louis’ dagger (with the red spot on top) going through Harry’s rose.

In 2019 he started to wear the peace ring on his left hand instead of his right hand.

One of the first times that he wore the peace ring on the left hand was at the ONO for Fine Line on December 16th, 2019. On his other hand made his first appearance the Crown ring (Stevie Nicks gifted this ring to him that same night)

The crown ring became then one of the rings that Harry kept on wearing the most in combination with the peace ring.

For example he wore both rings (peace ring on the left hand) during Watermelon Sugar and Falling MV

And at the Brits on February 18th, 2020.

It’s at the Grammy’s on March 14th, 2021 that Harry stopped wearing the peace ring. He started to wear the Bird ring (it’s a ring with a similar antique style as the one that Alessandro Michele loaned to him in 2018 but it’s a different ring and with a different bird art) instead and alongside the Crown ring. The same thing happened at the Brits on May 11th, 2021.

During his tour in the USA (here there’s a rings on tour post) a large stone ring made his appearance and Harry wore it on his left hand alongside the Bird ring on his right hand. SO STILL NO PEACE RING.

The only 2 exeptions were:

- in Denver on September 7th, 2021 when he wore the peace ring (!!!) after many months not wearing it at all. And we’ll see later how this will become very 👀👀👀

- in Boston on October 25th, 2021 when surprisingly he didn’t wear any rings

After that night, another 8 long months passed and finally on May 19th, 2022 the peace ring was back but that was for just one performance in New York

And we never saw the peace ring anymore until …

September 7th, 2022 (EXACTLY 1 YEAR AFTER Denver in September 7th, 2021!) during his show in New York. After this date Harry wore the ring 5 times (during his shows on September 8th, 10th, 14th and 15th, 2022 and at the My Policeman Premiere in Toronto on September 11th, 2022) making it a total of 6 times in a row (after a very long time)

We don’t know the reason why Harry wore the peace ring exactly 1 year after the Denver show on September 7th but we sure know that the number 7 is something that is becoming more and more seen lately (here a post with some of the many times).

In conclusion I just wanted to point out a couple of things:

- the first time he wore the peace ring again on September 7th, 2022 was after the Venice Film Festival (when he didn’t acknowledge Olivia at all and he totally didn’t see Louis who was in Italy as well) where he wore the bird ring and the stone ring (his latest usual combination, see also the tour)

- he didn’t wear any rings in a couple other occasions (the TPWK and Golden music videos)

I created a separate timeline post where I keep track of every time Harry wears the peace ring so that this masterpost will only be updated when/if things change. I also created this sideblog to post the pictures of every time Harry wears the ring (it’s gonna be easier for me to update the timeline post that way)

TPWK (Behind the Scenes)

Summary: The one where you post the behind the scenes of the TPWK video that you filmed, showing Harry as an annoyingly adorable boyfriend.

“Do you think I can dance?” Harry had asked you one night as you watched Stranger Things.

You had hummed, tearing your eyes from the television to look at him on your lap, seeing his eyes set on you, “What was that?”

“Do you think I can dance?” He repeated.

You smiled before chuckling a little, “You got a move or two,” you teased him, “Why?”

With an excited smile on his face, he had answered: “I’m thinking about Treat People having a dance.”

“Like a choreography?”

“Yeah.”

Your eyebrows had went up, tilting your head as you looked at him, “I like where this is going,” you said, “But baby, it has–look, I don’t think I’ll be able to look at you if by choreography you mean something like–like Liam’s Strip That Down thing, please,” you cringed, “I won’t be able to look at you, I’m sorry.”

Harry burst out laughing, poking you in the stomach, “Fuck ooooff!” He dragged, “Be nice, Y/N!”

“I am being nice!” You laughed, “And you know I’m right! I don’t mean anything against him personally, it’s just–it’s just bad choreography, alright?”

But you had trust in Harry–enough to know that he wasn’t going to go for a choreography that would make him look all “cool” and “hot”.

You felt like a proud mom every time you watched Harry practice, sometimes feeling like a mean girlfriend every time you laughed at him if he fell or stepped on anybody’s toes.

“Stop laughing at me!” He had tackled you in his arms one day, laughing with you and everyone else did, “You’re not allowed in the studio anymore. You’re not allowed.”

“Studio?” You had teased him, “Look at you, talking like a professional dance–Ow, H, stop, I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” You had pushed him, trying to stop him from tickling you.

And that was when you decided to start filming the behind the scenes of the Treat People With Kindness music video.

Initially, it was just going to be a keepsake for you and Harry to look back and laugh at, with no intentions to post it anywhere, but then the 2nd of July came and with it, the video you had created was posted.

It started with the makeup artist of the music video trying to fix Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s makeup with a brush, and Harry annoyingly pushing her hand away as he looked at you with a childish smile.

“Harry, stop being a pest!” You could be heard saying through a giggle before he huffed at you and turned away.

The video then officially began, the song beginning to play the moment Harry was seen standing in the dancing studio where he practiced, Cosmigos red t-shirt tucked inside his black joggers with his hair clipped back. His hands were on his hips, trying to stifle his laughter as he stood in the front and middle, backup dancers behind him.

The scene then changed to show Harry standing from the side in a white t-shirt and colorful Elvis-printed pajama bottoms, his white dress shoes that he was set to wear for the music video on his feet. In a ready posture, his arms reached out to hold Phoebe Waller-Bridge as she ran towards him so he could carry her, but they both ended up laughing.

“And he says he does cardio,” you joked in the video as you recorded, letting out a laugh when Harry ran towards you, jumping with his hands on your shoulder.

In a split screen was then two videos of Harry with a mic stand, doing the official dance in the studio along with the music, before it split to 3 screens to show the actual music video at the top.

The video then showed a single scene of Harry from the TPWK’s location, doing his dance from the side as you recorded on an 8mm film camera that you had borrowed from a friend.

It then moved to show another video you recorded with your phone, Harry in a white t-shirt and black shorts before you propped your phone and stepped beside him with a grin, Harry putting his hand out for you to hold as that one move from the dance, and you put yours in his, the both of you laughing as you moved to stop recording.

It then showed 4 photos of Harry dancing from the music video before it moved to show the camera filming him as he danced.

At the 49th second, you were seen through the large mirrors of the dancing studio as you recorded Harry running in a circle with the backup singers dancing, before he ran towards you, pressing a kiss to your phone before his face scrunched as he ran away, hand reaching to hold his groin, “My groin,” he complained before laughing.

A minute and 14 seconds in, it was just you and Harry in another studio, you recording him as he practiced his movies in a white t-shirt and white shorts, his Vans on his feet.

He stepped closer to your phone as you recorded him from the floor, opening his arms as he looked down at you before giving you a grin.

It then moved to show another clip from that same day, you on Harry’s shoulders as you recorded through the mirror, his arms out before he placed his hands on your legs, carefully swaying the both of you as you both laughed.

At 1:18, and unbeknownst to the fans watching, it was the day when you surprised him on set. Harry was standing with Jeff, in his black TPWK hoodie, you recording as he looked around nonchalantly before his eyes landed on you, his face lighting up and his eyes going wide before he pointed at you, “You,” he mouthed as he raised his arm to excitedly wave at you and send you an air kiss as he chewed on his gum, before the video showed him eagerly walking towards you, his arms out before he was out of the view, but clearly because he was hugging you.

In black and white, the video showed a shot of Harry, shaking his left leg with his lips tucked before he moved to the side with his body a little, shaking his other leg.

“You’re such a pro at this, H,” your voice could be heard saying, “Give us the moves, give us the moves!”

The video then moved, showing Harry in his TPWK sparkly outfit, you giggling as he got close to your phone, “Get out of my face, alright?” He said with wide eyes, dramatically so, before turning around to walk, looking over his shoulder at you with a sheepish smile before he walked back towards you, “I’m just kidding, come heeeeere,” he puckered his lips.

The video then showed Harry in black and white filter again, standing in the studio with the backup dancers as he smiled, “This is the first time H is performing the dance,” you said, “Look how smug he looks,” you zoomed on his face, showing him give you a face before sticking his tongue out and laughing.

At 1 minute and 50 seconds, he stood in your shared home in the living room, his full TPWK on as he showed it off to you by giving you a full twirl.

“You look so good,” you said, “Give us another twirl, H, come on.”

With a childishly excited grin, Harry twirled again before ending the twirl with his hands out and an open mouthed grin.

The video then showed more behind the scenes of Phoebe practicing, and her and Harry practicing together as well as photos of them you had taken before minute 2 and 9 seconds came and it was you and Harry dancing together.

Standing in front of one another, your hands were out, going side to side as that one move from his and Phoebe’s dance, wide grins on your faces before you held on to his hand, wanting to do the cartwheel but Harry being Harry, he pulled your entire body to his chest instead, making you lose balance against him before you threw your head back as you laughed, Harry joining as he wrapped his arms around your body against his before pressing his lips to your cheek while Jeff laughed at the both of you in the background.

The video then continued to show more behind the scenes of the music video before it ended with you propping your phone before stepping back, showing all the cheering backup dancers and Phoebe as it was the last day of filming the video, before Harry appeared, wrapping his arm around your waist before you wrapped yours around his shoulders, the both of you raising your other arms up as you cheered with the rest.

If there was anything you understood, it was how exciting it always was to give Harry’s fans content like that out of the blue, so you knew that it was something they would eat up when you posted it on your Instagram with:

Boyfriends

A self aware take on Boyfriends, including Harry and boyfriends of those he cares for. The lyric video features a lone swan, a symbol of commitment. Harry was with a swan in every image for his May 20 2019 Gucci Campaign, released the week Boyfriends was first written. Harry and Taylor were pictured with a Swan on her birthday when they went to The Lakes. Harry who has spoken about the song with pride and deference. Let's start with the gorgeous first take:

Harry said to Zane Lowe it was written at the end of Fine Line:

"There was an extra week where we wrote some stuff, wrote Adore you, TPWK and we were recording Lights Up. [...] At the end of that session everyone left and I started writing Boyfriends and it almost felt like OK there is a version where we get this ready to put on this album, and I think there was something about it where it felt like it's going to have it's time. [...] I am learning so much by saying it [...] It is both acknowledging my own behaviour, looking at behaviour I have witnessed and looking at I grew up with a sister, so it's like watching her date people and watching friends date people and you know people don't treat each other nicely sometimes. And it turned out about boyfriends because I started paying it and saying boyfriends. [...]Just say what you think of boyfriends.

Harry was in the studio from 15 May 2019, the Swan Gucci Campaign was released on he and Taylors anniversary that week. It was also 2 weeks after Me! Was released. When speaking about Boyfriends Harry constantly mentions these other songs. They have a common theme about the impact of the behaviour of others on his relationships and self, true his nature it is subtle and gentle:

Adore you's video asks fans to respect the partner(s) of his choosing, in contrast to fan reaction who he dates.

TPWK, as the title says, Harry told Rolling Stone " It made me uncomfortable at first, [...] I feel like that song opened something that’s been in my core.”

Lights Up - to Rolling Stone Harry spoke about stepping out from 1D on his own, the lyrics of "I'm not ever going back" and "All the lights couldn't put out the dark running through my heart", link the experience of the band and fandom to mental health and knowing who he is, rather than who others want him to be.

To me, coming at the end of that session adds to Harry taking ownership his role in failed relationships in that time by being unaware of the impact his 1D persona. fan treatment of his partner(s) and emotional unavailability. Taylor has also described her anxiety dating him in Slut! and Gold Rush. However, as Harry said, it is not limited to himself. On its release at Coachella, (3 years after it was written) "To Boyfriends Everywhere, F*** you". This was weeks after Taylor wrote You're Losing Me about Joe. His face to the end of this is everything:

Setlist and Tracklisting

Harry placed Boyfriends on HH between Satellite and LOML. Harry stopped playing Boyfriends after November 15 2022, when he played it live with Ben Harper at the end of the L.A. Forum residency. It was only played once in 2023, at Wembley June 16. The next night was the only time he played Sweet Creature since 2018. When it was on the setlist it proceeded LOML or Lights Up.

To Variety Ben Harper said: "It was a wonderful recording session — one of the most memorable and most musical I’ve ever been a part of. [...] Harry invited me to stick around because he wanted to finish the song right then and there. To get to watch Harry in his process was eye-opening, and I learned a lot. [...] Yeah, I mean, he orchestrated the vocal harmonies like a classical composer, spot on, note for note. He just stacked them perfectly in pitch, one better than the next, and it was really eye-opening to see somebody step on the mic and have the parts orchestrated in his head. I’ve never seen anything like it actually."

Lyrics

The opening is Backwards 'Ooh Fool, you’re back at it again'. Sunflower Vol 6 also opens with 'Sunflower' backwards. I think of this as about a backwards life, success followed by a normal life.

The first verse describes how boyfriends take their partner for granted and misunderstand.

Weakened When you get deep in He starts secretly drinking It gets hard to know what he's thinking You love a fool who knows just how to get under your skin You, you, you still open the door

The second verse describes where partner has met their guard down some boyfriends withdraw, and start drinking. Harry has sung of this before in Half the world away “I’ve started drinking”. Harry has mentioned drinking in other songs, but HTWA has a similar meaning, of drinking in secret to cope.

Harry touches on common themes in his discography:

Not communicating, similar to MMIH “we don’t talk about it”

Not getting over this person - Getting under you skin is a reference to Taylor’s The Lakes: “What should be over burrowed under my skin in heart-stopping waves of hurt” and IWYW “You always knew how to push my buttons”

Doors - here Harry's muse is opening the door, Harry has 7 songs that refer to knocking, opening or not opening doors. Taylor also has 13 songs about Harry and doors.

You're no closer to him Now you're halfway home Only calling you when Don't wanna be alone Oh, and you go Why? You don't know

While the first 2 verses the Boyfriend was uncommunicative, emotionally unavailable and didn't consider their partner. In the third verse the boyfriend and partner are learning from failed relationships, but still no closer. Now the boyfriend is only calling when they want company, rather than to be there for their partner.

Halfway home: The X Account 'I am Halfway Home' was started to promote HH. The term could have several meanings:

a Halfway house is a place to reintegrate into society from an institution.

The song is a play on words of having no more emotional closeness despite being physically halfway home, and

Halfway home is the name of a documentary about the toll war takes on veterans and their families.

Home is an important theme to Harry's work, Home meaning being with the right person rather than a physical place. To me, this lyric is Harry is saying that despite his growth since leaving the band and break down of this relationship they are still not emotionally closer.

Boyfriends Are they just pretending? They don't tell you where it's heading And you know the game's never ending You, you lay with him as you stay in the daydream You feel a fool You're back at it again

The closing of the song is a sense that the boyfriend is being a player, not communicating.

But Harry's muse gives in, wanting to stay in a dream. Slut! has a similar idea of choosing to stay in a love haze when you know it's not going to last "Got lovestruck, went straight to my head / Got lovesick, all over my bed / Love to think you'll never forget / Handprints in wet cement". Harry also says this in Daydreaming: "Livin' in a daydream"

Harry and Taylor have both used 'fool' in reference to their relationship before (in Fools Gold, Cardigan, Illicit Affairs, Joker and the Queen and in Long Pond Taylor said it 7 times about James in Betty.)

Finally, it refers to the cyclical nature of their relationship with 'back at it again' as OOTW 'built to fall apart and back together' and Style "when we go crashing down we come back every time' and many other songs.

So YN is obviously a dancer: she did a full choreographed 3-minute dance routine for her single collab with Little Mix for their song Move, her two closest friends (Alisha and Jax) are both professional dancers and have taken her to some dance classes over the years, and she has 4 female dancers (all shapes, colors and sizes) for her core dance tour team, not to mention that she dances and performs in knee high, 6 inch heeled boots on tour.

So yeah, YN's a pretty skilled dancer.

And imagine the look on her face when she's invited to one of Harry's team meetings for the music video to not only hear that he wants to do a full dance routine, but have her be his dance partner? He claims that his reasoning is because her vocals are featured in the song, but the sly smile he gives her confirms that he’s taking advantage of an opportunity to do yet another project with her.

So they began learning and rehearsing the routine that was created by none other than One Direction's previous choreographer, Paul Roberts. She shouldn't be surprised by how fast Harry picked up on the choreography. He's definitely that annoying friend who hasn't done an activity before, does it for the first time and instantly becomes a natural.

So here are some highlights from the making of the TPWK music video.

...

They're both stretching in front of the huge mirrors in the dance studio. YN is wearing an oversized Treat People With Kindness white t-shirt, plain black biker shorts and matching Harry’s classic Vans. Harry stretches next to her, also wearing a t-shirt of her merch.

As she goes from a wide squat to a deep forward lunge, she squeaks and almost loses her balance when she feels a pinch on her bum. She reaches out and swats at her giggling boyfriend.

"Keep yeh hands to yourself!"

...

"What if we did a lift?" Harry suggests, his index finger and thumb pinching at his bottom lip.

"Did yeh forget the Night Changes music video?" She scoffs and everyone in the room laughs when his big hand covers her face, playfully pushing her away.

After some hours already spent locked away in the small rehearsal space, the couple was getting a little delirious. So it doesn’t really take a whole lot of convincing YN to try out the stunt. Especially when he leans really close to her side, chest to her shoulder, and tells her in her ear, "Come on. I got you, lovie. Y'trust me, yeh?"

So here she finds herself, standing a couple of feet away from Harry as they prepare for a silly, impulsive lift. When he gives her a nod, she's quickly going to him. Everything was fine, his hand placement was correct, her speed was at a good pace, but what has them both stop midway through the lift is that his nose bumps deep into her chest.

Once Harry carefully puts her back to the ground, YN crumples to the floor with her hands to her stomach as she barks out in laughter. His eyes squeeze shut, hands to his knees as he joins her in laughter.

...

"Next to the stage, we have the wonderfully talented, Grammy-nominated, professional dancer, Harry Styles!" YN announces in a deep voice from her spot on the floor. She's sitting with her back against the mirror behind her in another dance studio in LA as she holds her phone close to her face to record Harry's take of his full solo routine.

She giggles when he takes a dramatic bow, stepping closer to the microphone stand and gives a couple of waves to the fake audience around him before beginning.

...

When Harry first began bouncing from one table to another on a trampoline, YN will admit, she was a little nervous. She didn’t want him to accidently miss his footing or lose his balance.

"H, please be careful. Ah!" YN puts her hands over her eyes.

But as the days getting closer to final shoot came along, she would record her boyfriend bouncing around the tables with a dramatic wave of his arms and she would yell out a, “Parkour!” every now and then.

It would make him stop on top of a table to laugh, making sure to catch his breath from the prancing around and from his giggling. Her comments would go on for a bit longer, making herself laugh more than anything. Her giggling quickly turns into a squeal when Harry, instead of bouncing to the next table, uses the trampoline to jump towards her. Playfully fed up with her distractions, he wraps his arms around her and tackles her to the ground.

...

There’s a short video clip shown of the couple rehearsing in YN’s home gym in the small dance corner she has. Harry has his phone propped up against the mirror wall as they record their progress. The two go around in a circle, twisting their hips, flicking their foot, spinning and ending with a clap.

The two stay in that position for a hot second, frozen in place with their hands in the air. YN tries her hardest to hold back a laugh as she realizes they both forgot the steps. Although Harry’s back is to the camera, his shoulders twitching lets everyone know he’s doing the same.

...

Harry and YN are decked out in their final finished outfits. They’re both standing in front of a living room and Lambert tells them that he’s going to do a quick camera test. He instructs them to do a simple spin to showcase the custom outfits.

While Harry does so with his arms extended beside him, YN has her arms above her head like a ballerina, her foot to her opposite knee as she does a more dramatic turn.

Lambert just shakes his head at the couple as they giggle and begin to do silly dances instead. They were never ones for following directions for a simple video anyways.

...

Harry's being a pest and clingy to his girlfriend on the day of shooting. It's annoying at times but he can't help it. He's just excited that he's doing something this big and fun with her: their first music video together in almost 6 years.

Like how every time the makeup artist tries to touch up YN's lipstick, he pushes the poor woman's elbow to make her shaky. It goes on for a bit before YN makes a playful reach to pinch his nipple through his sparkly jacket.

Or after she does her part coming down the staircase and they're all watching the playback on the monitors with the director, he's cuddled up behind her. For the sake of not showing too much PDA in their workplace, he has his hands behind his back but he still leans down enough so that his chin sits comfortably on top of her shoulder with a fond smile tugged on his lips.

...

YN and Harry are talking off set in a relatively dark corner. While chewing on a piece of gum, she nods to whatever he’s saying before her eyes find the BTS camera behind him. She playfully squints her eyes and flips off the camera.

When Harry turns around to see what she’s been seeing, he gets really close to the camera and says with fake aggressiveness, “Get out m’face alright.”

He turns back around to wrap his arms around her, pulling her to the front of his chest and blocking her from the camera. But the couple can’t hold their serious facial expressions for long and Harry gives the camera a cheeky, close lipped smile over his shoulder. YN’s face from the nose up can be seen from behind his shoulder, but once the tops of her cheeks scrunch up, it’s known she’s smiling too.

...

From the monitor screens, the BTS cameraman captures YN and Harry in their matching outfits while they’re on stage. Both of them bounce from foot to foot, shaking out their hands to loosen up before their dance number. Harry puts his hands up in front of him and YN punches them like she’s a boxer preparing for a match.

They both act very concentrated and overly focused, that is until Harry pulls a hand back a bit when one of her rings dig too deep into a part of his skin. He has a mocked fake hurt expression on his face and YN scrunches up her nose as she laughs, reaching out and cuddling his hand.

...

“Cut! Let’s reset and go again.”

Everyone goes back to their first positions, a little bit of chatter fills the room and YN takes that as an opportunity to playfully poke at his tummy. “Y’doing really great, H. What’s wrong?”

“Think m’just nervous or somewhat. I was doing it fine in rehearsals. Dunno what m’doing wrong.” Harry almost rakes his fingers through his hair but quickly remembers not to mess up his already styled hairstyle, so he goes to adjust the waistband of his trousers instead.

YN can feel his frustration already beginning to seep in and she’s not going to let a couple of missed steps ruin his shoot. The whole day has been filled with laughter, giddy smiles, and just overall excitement by doing a project together.

“Can I tell yeh a secret?” YN asks her boyfriend. Harry automatically furrows his eyebrows in concern, giving her his full attention at the drop of a hat. He’s always willing to push past his concerns to focus on hers.

“Of course. Always.” He softly plays with her fingers between them.

“M’nervous too.” YN whispers with the corners of her lips tugging up in a smile and there’s a sense of relief brought to both of them: Harry for not feeling alone in his anxiety and YN for helping him calm down. “Just count out loud like we did in rehearsal, yeh? I do it all the time.”

“Play back. Everyone ready? Alright, ready in 3...2...1, action!”

“5, 6, 7, 8 and 1...” YN says softly, Harry matching her movements as he finds his groove again. Both have their arms out, hands bent down as they hop their way down the stage. As they look to each other, YN gives him a quick wink before moving onto their next move.

Once the director yells “And that’s a wrap!” Harry stands upright from his bent backwards position in his love’s arms and immediately wraps his arms around the tops of her shoulders. Their bellies move against each other as they both try to catch their breath, both a little sweaty but they can honestly care less.

The crew members, Sarah’s band, and the dancers all cheer and clap as everything comes to a close.

Too caught up in adrenaline, Harry doesn’t really think twice about giving YN a quick kiss and an ‘I love you.’ His dimples dig into his cheeks as she says it back with no hesitancy and he pulls her back to his chest.

This is dismissive and ignores Harry's considerable charisma and fantastic work ethic. He's a superb live performer: fearless, word perfect, very strong vocally and happy to banter back and forth with the crowd. This can't be bought or taught.

He's also happy to make a complete clown of himself and spend hours in costume and make up to create interesting videos like MFASR and Daylight. He even learned ballroom choreography for TPWK. Louis for some reason wouldn't even play a main character in the Walls videos despite having a background in theatre. Zayn, Louis, Liam and Niall just walk about in their videos or sit in a pub.

You harries are so exhausting sometimes. How is me saying H get's everything he points as dismissive? It's the truth. There is a reason he gets everything he points at, and one part of it is talent.

You do know that when you're favoured from the first minute by the people in power who can make things happen, and the others are told they'll never make it, that you gain confidence and motivaton to perform and do well? On the other hand, being told you'll never make it and that you aren’t good enough will do the opposite? That all this will forever determine and shape their career trajectories and opportunities they will be given?

Yes, there is a reason H was chosen. He's got charisma, charm and has a bendable will. Perfect to mold into a pop star. Harry could make the worst song ever and still chart. He wont because he has been given the opportunity to work with the best songwriters (not because of his charm or connections, but because his label pays them handsomely) and he has the best creative directors and music video budget. He has people blowing smoke up his ass daily. His confidence in himself is sky high. If Harry would have been given the same conditions as Liam, Niall, Zayn and Louis, and been told he'll never make it from day 1, been given bg or an unfavourable image, it wouldn't matter how much charm or charisma he'd have. He'd be in the same boat as them.

Charting is about 50% label support and labels throwing their power around, 40% artist image and reputation, and 10% raw talent. You hardly ever see unknown, talented artists with really good songs chart anymore. You can be the most talented, lovely, interesting and original artist you want. If you don’t have label backing or a carefully curated image and PR people who'll create engagement and interest in you, nobody will know who you are and care to buy your song or album.

So while you sit there praising H and dragging the other members. Think about how easy his road to the top has been. His road was paved with gold. Meanwhile the others were held back, burdened with false unfavourable images and had to claw their way out of the ditch. They weren't given the same chance to shine, because Sony though there could only be one successful star out of 1D. They also held the others back to have everyone's focus on H.

Think about how hard mentally it's been for them to have to take the long road, how insecure they are after being told they're not good enough and how it has impacted their confidence and motivation. In order to act, sing, dance and perform like H does you need confidence more than you need talent. You need investors, powerful people and companies to have 100% faith in you to gain that confidence. H's got that, the others don't.

As someone who works in publicity, this is very calculated. Harry only appears in music videos either alone (or with a pretend fish), or with MANY people (with two exceptions which I’ll speak about below). He doesn’t do videos with one figurative, sexual love interest. In fact, although I haven’t studied all of their videos, the only one I can really remember him ever doing like that was the band’s first, WMYB.

This is to be the “everyone’s man” figure. You see this with women too, although more often the men are background dancers who interact with them. However, the way Harry has been doing it is less putting the women on show in a power display, and more in a way where they all sort of have fun together. This creates a sexual/sexy atmosphere but removes a direct sexual connection with the actors.

Now this is different when the storyline alludes to break up or a sad song. AIW had a female lead but the audience accepts this more easily because they appear to not be together, or breaking up, so they still “have a chance with him.” Same with TPWK, although it wasn’t sad. There wasn’t a relationship connection so it doesn’t threaten the viewer.

People may call it an orgy, but it’s common practice. Harry just does it on a large scale and in intimate situations, however his relationship to these people is always “best friend having fun” rather than the alpha with his harem.

If I had to guess, I would say this is in part Harry pushing for a dynamic that includes the requisite amount of female interaction without making him obviously implicitly connected to them, and also his team wanting him to appear desirable without appearing to be unavailable. The viewer wants to insert themselves into the fantasy—this allows them to slip into the spaces between all these people, and not in direct competition with any one person. You will also notice Louis does this as well, although instead of an “orgy” he used a random couple.

Sorry for the ramble, just some observations from working in this field for a while!

No, I love this “ramble”. You’re really spot on. And it’s interesting to hear it broken down that way because that’s my take away when I watch his videos, I just couldn’t articulate it as well.
