Today is Sant Jordi (Saint George's Day), one of the most beloved traditional holidays in Catalonia ❤️ the day of literature, love, and the Catalan language.

In these two images, you can find an explanation of this tradition. The first photo is an auca, a way of explaining stories with drawings and rhymes that is traditional from Catalonia and has been very popular between the 1600s and the 1930s and to a lesser extent still done nowadays.

I wish everyone a happy Sant Jordi with lots of books and love, and in a time when the right-wing furiously attacks our language and culture, a day of fight for Catalan language and literature.

Carnaval de Bielsa, 2022.

In this village of the Pyrenees, the single men dress as trangas, half-man half-animal creatures, tying horns to their heads, painting their faces with soot and oil, wearing a hide on their backs, and long skirts. They represent virility, and they pick up the madamas, the single girls of the village who wear colorful dresses, from their houses. From there they go around the town.

Others dress up as onsos (bears), covering their backs with hay and sheepskin on his back, and like the trangas, cover their faces with soot and oil. They walk around on sticks, and represent the wilderness of the Pyrenees, especially the bears, which have been objects of mythology in the Peninsula for thousands of years. The onso is controlled by the domador. The only way he can tame him is by giving him wine or hitting him.

Other figures not pictured here are the amontato, the caballet, and the garreta.

Making tortell de reis, traditional dessert for the Three Wise Men holiday (January 6th).

These cakes have a figurine of a king and a bean hidden in them. When the cake is cut and given to the family members, whoever gets the king will wear the crown, and whoever gets the bean will pay for the cake next year.

The Cipotegato is a traditional character, dressed as a harlequinn, for the festivities of Tarazona. This character comes out every year in front of the City Hall of Tarazona for the festivities of San Atilano (Saint Attilanus), while the townspeople throw tomatoes at him.

The Cipotegato is chosen each year by random from a raffle done by the city hall between the young people of Tarazona.
