I have nothing to show for Martinmas except my Wild Hunt candle from @wildbeautycandles and the strong feelings of gender in the second photo. I prayed to the wilds, pulled cards, danced, made trecks to visit old trees and haunted places for today. Nothing which I originally planned for Martinmas but certainly felt the most appropriate given it's my first year incorporating it into my practice as part of the patronage of the Wild Lord.

May The Animals have enough to eat, may The Wild Hunt move freely and cause us no harm, and may The Beasts we tend both inside and out brace against the coming winter.

Tips for beginner folk witches:

- Learn everything you can about animism. This concept will really help you understand how and why spells work the way that they do

- Learn homesteading type skills. Sewing will help with a lot of different types of spells, especially poppet making. Knitting or crocheting will help with any kind of trance work you need to do too

- Candle color is a subjective thing, and is not necessary. It can add a layer if you have some personal feelings about the color, but it is not necessary if you don't care about it

- Lighter fluid will come in handy when you need to curse someone quickly, as will gasoline if you can afford to use it. If not, lighter fluid or a high proof alcohol

- you can get away without using organs if you want to, but honestly nothing that can be used to replace them will be as strong in spellwork. When you need someone to really suffer (like a pedo) a cows heart will go much farther than an image of a human one. And you can buy most organs you need at the grocery store, or from a butcher

- Bones. Find them on the side of the road or in the forest, or buy them from a taxidermist. Remember that different animals are known for different things

- Spirit traps are a VITAL part of the practice. I don't care if you think they're "inhumane", when you have 27 parasites lying to you about who they are and are constantly drained and getting sick all the time, you'll understand why they're important. It's just another type of ward, expect specifically against spirits that wish you harm instead of spells or the evil eye

- Easiest ward you have is your broom. Flip it bristles up either wherever you usually keep it or by the door. It will keep people you don't want around or who wish you harm from entering your home

- And finally, the Library of Congress is free to use, and you can google whatever you want and tack it on the end and it should pull up several links to different articles. There's a very good one on an Italian family's method of removing the evil eye

black pepper, the more the BETTER! bad luck in all aspects of life

garlic: for their partner to be disgusted of them and move away from the emotionally

spicy herbs: to feel constant pain, irritated and anger

salt: to intensify wounds and keep each other away

lemon: causing pain, souring the relationship

alum: stop the couple from communicating well, (starting fights)

black candle/figure candle: to bind the target

u need a big ass candle to carve their name, a taglock or photo of them. get protection too and call a spirit if needed.

to enhance this, i will incorporate runes so they are DONE for. as they should be.

I have been curious to look at a statistical insight into the different Elemental associations people have with the Cardinal Directions. There are 24 different ways that the directions and elements can be grouped together, but tumblr won't allow me to do a poll with 24 options. I could do an individual poll on each element, but I specifically want to look at which pairings of the four elements/directions are the most common, so I'm going to do a Part 1 and a Part 2 for this poll. Together, these will give all the options for how someone might associate the elements and directions together, so if you don't see your particular pairings in this post, then stay tuned for the follow-up poll.

Lie Down in the Evening

Some days I wake up like an ox

I earned these stout stone shoulders

I learned to carry her

In the vast empty cold, alone

I marvel at my strength like the rock wall reaching heaven

This cliff is where the angels jump.

Some days I only carry my feet.

If it's a cloud or only the snow in the wind, I can't tell the difference.

I haven't seen a green thing for so long I tried to grow leaves inside of me

There's too much stone in my soil,

Like the land where I was born

Some days I am the bison

Unyielding under the weight of a million carcasses who came before me

I try to paint their bones but there are so so many

Instead they carve into my skin and bones and remind me of the grassland my mother once knew

The earth combs her hair

And stillness falls away, a petal in the wind

Some days I am only dust.

Peace looks like surrender to the wind.

Her tears sting my face as they crash down from heaven,

I think clouds are another world.

If I could just reach my hands into her nothingness and draw them out like something new and unborn

If I could be the seed, reaching, still blind under the soil

The sun has yet to hit my face

I am cold and some days I'm comfortable that way

It's the moon who has seen me, shedding, writhing

A dance that no man would recognize

Her gentle kiss is the key to my stuck ribs

Some days I am the black walnut tree

I mark black every finger print that ever touched me

Sometimes it's love, but you'd never know if it wasn't.

When the night falls in like leaping into the abyss,

The stars are easy for my tired eyes.

They paint me in colors I could only hope to learn.

The dark settling under the trees like so many ravens, beckons me away from the fire.

Lifeless, still, I collapse

My bones tumble in a hollow clatter

In the dirt, I lie, jumbled, unafraid of the dead things

Sometimes I think I'm one of them

Or I wish to be, I feel my skin

Piece by piece, opening to let the earth in

The earth opens and lets me in too.

When the dawn strikes me I will remember the lightning

It struck me like I've never been struck

But I have.

I've only forgotten the embrace of the thunder.

I rise again on feeble legs

And there lies the ox, the bison

I wonder if I am one of them.

Their pelt stripped away, their hearts and kidneys and so much blood exposed.

I think I remember the seed I was

I try to imagine it, before the wind kissed me

Before the moon became my lover

Before I needed the ox's shoulders.

I wonder if bison ever kneel before the sunset

If they bow their horns to kiss the beloved earth

I wonder if the ox ever lies down in the evening.

I wonder if they miss the sun.
