Sing me to sleep, O’ Morning Glory

Or, Gloria gets a late night phone call and Victor handles his guilt and anxiety poorly.

It’s around 3am when Gloria gets the phone call. She barely registers the familiar ringtone.

Four bell chimes in rapid succession, followed by two deeper, much slower chimes.

Victor’s ringtone.

She’s more than awake now, staring wide eyed at the bright screen of her phone. Hardly believing the words that scrawled across the glass.

Victor A. Morning

A hundred thousand questions raced through her mind.

Is he alright?

Where was he?

Why did he leave so abruptly?

Why hadn’t he called her sooner?

What had he been doing all this time?

When was he coming home?

Was he ever coming home?

She answers.

“Vic?”

“Mornin’ Glory.” Her cousin’s voice is ragged and he’s breathing heavy.

“Arceus, Vic, you sound horrible! You okay?” Gloria’s out of bed now, almost frantically dressing. Victor barks out a hoarse laugh.

“Ah, ‘s nothing, ‘m fine now, Glory.” He doesn’t sound fine to her.

“Where are you?” She starts to fumble for her backpack, but stops when he doesn’t answer.

“I can’t tell you.” He says flatly, after a moment of silence. “Nor can I answer the other questions ‘m sure you have.”

“Why not? Vic, you’ve been gone for a fucking year!” She hadn’t meant to shout, but she always had a quick temper.

Victor doesn’t answer right away. He doesn’t have to. She can hear the sharp breaths he’s trying to muffle.

“Mornin’ Glory, please.” It’s barely a whisper and thick with guilt, but he manages to choke it out. She can hear a faint creaking, can hear Vic rocking himself. “I can’t lose you too.”

“Victor.” She can hear his breath hitch, she hardly ever uses his real name.

“Yeah?” He whimpers, biting back a poorly concealed sob.

“What do you need?” She asks softly. He called for a reason after all.

“Can.. can you sing for me? Like you did when we were little?” She smiles.

And she does. All the songs she sang over the years.

The songs she sang when Victor would have nightmares.

The songs she sang when they played in the garden with Hop.

The songs she sang him after his father’s funeral.

The songs she sang after he won each gym badge.

And the song she never got to sing to him.

The song she sang after he dropped out of the tournament and disappeared.

He wasn’t even trying to muffle the tears when she finally finished.

“Gloria.” He says when the tears finally run dry. She hums in response, letting him take the time she knows he needs.

“I need your help, Mornin’ Glory.” She smiles, shouldering her backpack. She pulls on her favourite cap, the one Issac gave her before the accident.

“Meet you at the spot?” He laughs, coarse and pained, but a laugh all the same.

“Half past ten O’clock.” He finishes the rythme, and she can hear the smile in his words. The call ends and Gloria is out the door. She had a train to catch.

The sun had long risen as Victor leans back on the floor of his van, eyes fixated on the dark screen glaring accusingly back at him.

If she dies, it’ll be your fault. Because you were too much of a coward to protect her.

He shakes his head, tearing his gaze away and looking out the back window. Absently he reaches for a pokeball on the belt of his discarded jeans. His thumb runs over the ridges. He takes a shaky breath.

“Always was a morning person.” He laughs at his own joke, fresh tears spilling hot down his already sore cheeks.

“I can’t do this alone.”

Hello Jjwutt! I have recently been introduced to the Pokemon Sword/Shield fandom and I also recently found your fics for Hop x Victor. Well, I binged read all three from your Tales of a Champion and I love it alot, I've also been recently flooding your "Asktrainshippingboys" with several questions, apologies for that XD I really enjoyed the backstory you gave Victor, as angsty as it was, and you also indulged me with having Gloria as a twin in that blog temporarily. I’m gonna go ahead and answer on here to avoid any spoilers for people. But first I want to say thank you so much for the support! And welcome to the fandom! It means so much when fans of my work reach out towards me! And in the tales AU I originally didn’t include Gloria since I wanted the main focus to be Victor and Hop’s relationship. She does exist in other AU’s like my Galar high and ask blogs. I’ve grown to experiment in adding her for the twin thing and fell in love with the dynamic. Think of it as separate AU’s! But I’m thankful for reaching out to me.

what an interesting question uhhhhh i have a love/hate relationship with hop for the sole reason of him being far too similar to me HOWEVER bc of how many hop haters there are i gotta be his number 1 😤

5 good qualities

1. he’s an incredibly passionate kid i gotta give him major kudos even tho he did have his bouts of insecurity he continued to reach for his goals and post game he continues to be passionate about his new ones

2. he knows his type matchups !!!! which is more than i can say for myself :’) (you’d think being a fan for so long i would know what the fuck is happening but alas)

3. he’s a good trainer fuck y’all he is one of two trainers i had difficulty with in all of swsh (fuck you opal let me be emo and have my dark type team) his last battle when he has the legendary in the weald was a challenge

4. he’s such a loyal kid even if sometimes it’s to his detriment he just loves his family and friends so much he would do anything for them :’)

5. he knows how to navigate himself around galar 😌

3 bad qualities

1. like i mentioned earlier he is. insecure and it causes him to make some bad decisions and second guess things

2. because of his insecurity he is also quite impulsive he is quick to switch up his team when he loses one (1) battle because of the implications that he lost because they were weak

3. this prolly goes hand in hand with insecurity but hems constantly comparing himself to leon which like i 100% understand i do the same fucking thing but that doesn’t mean it’s good :’)

when he gets the legendary !! it makes me so giddy every time !!!! close second is seeing him in the dlc i don’t think i’ve ever been more excited in a game than seeing hoppykins in the fucking dojo ahaksjsk

AAAAA YES okie okie so he has a ton of tiny lil mundane bad habits like biting the skin around his nails until they bleed (he sometimes wears charizard bandaids around his fingers to get himself to stop but they never work) or like he has the absolute worst sleep schedule so much so that victor has to drag him out of the lab because he’s been awake for 2.5 days on solely caffeine and spite or like he is constantly tapping his feet and it annoys sonia to death but it helps him focus so she keeps her mouth shut and turns up the volume on her headphones

Hi there anon! Oh you have, opened the floodgates. Yes I have quite a few favorite fanfic authors. Especially for Pokemon

First two that come to mind (which admittedly I'm extremely biased to because they are my friends, but also they are just insanely good writers) are @certainvictori and @hayleyb100!

When it comes to fluff and trainshipping (Hop/Victor) then I can't recommend anyone other than certainvictori. Particularly check out Galar High and Legend of The Sword and Shield. Seriously, Victor needs more love in this fandom and CertainVictori provides this in spades with immaculate worldbuilding and fun dialogue.

And if you're looking for an emotional roller coaster packed with amazing headcanons and worldbuilding along with gorgeous art to accompany the writing, please check out Hayley's work! Particularly check out Shattered and Light My Way Alright so moving out of "these people are amazing and I can't believe I'm actually friends with such talented people" moving into some of my favorite RaiLeon/Truerival authors we have bukkunkun and shamusiel. Both are phenomenal at worldbuilding (as you can see, I'm big on worldbuilding.

Bukkun's Secondary Typeverse series is just amazing (it is NSFW for some of the stories, though fair warning) and it covers not only Truerivalshipping, but Originshipping (Steven/Wallace), Nameless/Originalshipping (Blue Oak/Red) and more! It's a full exercise on Pokemon politics, biology, history/mythology and it does not disappoint. Also for those of you who are Raihan stans, the main fics secondary typing and the seas between us (and the storms they bring) are just *chef's kiss*. Like seriously I would take my coffee breaks at work to read this series whenever it updated, it's that good. Shamusiel's Tempest (ongoing, NSFW) and never look away (also NSFW) are really amazing especially for fans of Trans!Leon. They're both non Pokemon AUs but the characters are so in-character that it doesn't even matter than Pokemon don't exist. And the worldbuilding for both stories is amazing and blows me away every time.

And finally moving onto OC/Canon territory *sighs* honestly there's so many people whose writing I admire. It's really hard to not list everyone but for the sake of not making this post obscenely long I'll list just a few

First if you've been in the #champion Leon tag you've probably seen the gorgeous artwork of @carefreejules! Well Jules is not only an excellent artist but a fantastic worldbuilder with The Ties that Bind. I enjoyed her unique approach to the Galar region (not to mention Hoenn rep, YES) and the worldbuilding (as you can see I am a sucker for worldbuilding) and honestly her work inspired me to truly dive into the world of OC/Canon and allowing my trainersona to join the ranks of my other champion OCs. Then there is Mocha aka ShinySkarmorys whose Tales of the Seafarer and the Geologist (warning: some works are mature) is just amazing. Once again, the worldbuilding. If you are looking for a good Hoenn story (and who doesn't love Hoenn) complete with amazing LGBTQIA+ rep and in-universe indigenous communities then I'd suggest reading Mocha's work. Mocha's work, just like Jules has definitely been a big contributor to me joining the OC/Canon community and has definitely influenced some of my own worldbuilding for my Pokeverse Honestly, I could go on but then this post would never end

-Vic again. mostly because he's a walking ball of anxiety who worries about everything

-oooooh hmmm....i think...probably Vic? I think they both would be more comfortable asking for help later on in their relationship, but at first neither would- Vic because he's anxious about it and Hop because he finds pride in not having to ask for help. eventually they both get more comfortable with asking for help, but at first neither of them do

Who is always the one losing the keys?

Hop! because ADHD! (yes i'm projecting onto fictional characters again!)

Who leaves little notes for the other?

-okay i might ramble about this one in another post on my pokemon blog eventually but short answer is both of them. the notes aren't anything super meaningful at a glance, but they're all inside jokes and sometimes simple "i love yous" and they're left everywhere, in books and on shelves and sometimes their pokemon will deliver it and basically they're always swapping notes and i love them for it

Who can't sleep unless the other is there?

-Victor! he needs something to hold onto, and that's usually Hop. sometimes hop can be replaced with a pillow, but he likes knowing hop is safe. knowing hop is safe helps him calm down and sleep better

Who is more likely to propose to the other?

-idk? both of them? it wouldn't be some big thing, it'd just be a casual "what if we got married?" and the other saying "i mean we kind of already are" (thinking about this again, i think it'd be hop asking and victor answering)

Who introduced the other to their family first?

-hop introduced himself to victor's mum and then promptly forced victor to hunt frogs with him (this was when they were six and vic just moved to galar from kalos lololol. vic was introduced to hop's parents later that same day)

Who is more likely to play with the other's hair?

-both, but at different times of day. vic does it during the day when they're out in the wild area/when hop is working- he'll weave flowers into hop's hair or make him flower crowns or just kinda rest his hands on his head, and Hop will run his fingers through victor's hair to help him fall asleep

Who makes sure the other has meals/stays hydrated?

-both at different times, again. if hop's been working in his office for a long while victor will have dinner with him to make sure he actually eats food. and when victor has to do official champion things he sometimes forgets to/doesn't really have time to eat so hop hovers close by with granola bars and bottled water and steps in whenever vic needs a break to eat something

Who is more likely to stand up to anyone for the other?

Trainshipping headcanon pt.1

warning,might be super cheesy and cringe because theyre 12/13,

Despite liking victor,hop isnt as shy as people usually do with their crush,hop tries his best to impress victor and even hug him alot

victor on the other hand? hes somewhat shy to show his affection towards hop,all he does is usually holding hops hands and press their shoulder together

slowly but surely,victor got braver on showing his affection! he starts to hug hop first,give hop the things he found when hes exploring the wild area,and compliments hop more

hop has a habit on calling victor randomly at night when theyre seperated,he told vic all about what he experience that day,victor like this particular habit of hop,it makes him less lonely

whenever they camp together,hop make sure he bought a sausage and cut it as a heart and put it on top of victors curry

victor shows his affection by cleaning the plates and such,hop insisted to help victor,but vic declines the offering 

whenever they battle,vic often wins,victor can see the sadness on hops eyes,but hop assures vic that hes okay,but those small sobs when they camp at night is definitely not okay

all vic can do is to hug hop from behind,hoping itll make him better despite victor being the cause of it

victor felt bad,but hop,being...hop,assures him again that its okay and that means he needs to improve!

after going on journeys and battling together,victor confessed to hop,in a very very shy manner,before beating the champion,victor asked raihan to help him to find the perfect applin,of course,raihan helped him to breed one.

vic caught the applin,and just gives the pokeball to hop with a note,and slowly back away.

hop is confused,releases the mon from the pokeball,and he saw a tiny green applin,hop picked up the applin,held victors hand,and said yes

they both hugged and had their...first kiss? no first peck,theyre too shy to continue

after vic being the champion and hop being sonia’s assistant,they rarely hang out,they do text everyday but its not enough,not even video calls

but despite that,they still carry on,not wanting to break up just because of petty distance

hop ever had a breakdown because all his loved once become a champion,like his brother leon,and now vic,both are super busy and barely have time to relax and hang out ,well now even if victor is somewhat managed by leon,oleana still exist and she have a habit of filling up his schedule without victor’s permission

victor doesnt know about that,hop doesnt want to be a burden

but of course victor finds out and tries his best to make some time to hang out with his boyfriend,hop begged to victor that he shouldnt do that and prioritize his position,but victor shakes his head,and pecks hop by the cheek

“hop,its really hard to find some time to relax and hang with my loved ones,and because of that,id do my best to be with you because youre literally the cure this- stupid champion life,and youre also my priority,so please,its okay hoppy”

hop is grateful for having victor as his boyfriend

for hop specifically, i’m a huge fan of trainshipping (victor x hop) it makes my heart vv happy i even have a matching phone layout with my friend that’s vic and hop (mine’s hop’s team his is vic’s but i felt that was obvious agshshdj)

as for this blog, i don’t intend to have hop in a relationship unless it happens naturally ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ we don’t even have a vic in our canon so that’s not on my schedule anytime soon hehe we do however have raileon in our canon (dnkb?? i forget their actual ship name hhhhh) with hinted sonia x nessa (i rlly don’t know their ship name aaaaa) but that’s abt it ship wise i do personally ship both of those as well as gloria x marnie (i feel like the word goth comes up in their ship name but i rlly am clueless) and bede x therapy bc that kid needs a hug oh god
