FOTD #050 : turkey tail! (trametes versicolor)
the turkey tail bracket is a white-rot fungus. it commonly grows in tiled layers in groups or rows on logs & stumps of deciduous trees, & is common in north america (but also occurs in other environments of the world !!). it is famous for its medicinal uses :-)
the big question : can i bite it??
no - it is inedible.

t. versicolor description :
"the top surface of the cap shows typical concentric zones of different colours, & the margin is always the lightest. underneath a layer of tomentum is a black layer, topping the whitish flesh. the flesh itself is 1–3 mm thick & has a leathery texture. the mushroom is stalkless & the cap is rust-brown or darker brown, sometimes with black zones. the cap is flat, up to 8 × 5 x 0.5–1 cm in area. it is often triangular or round, with zones of fine hairs. the pore surface is whitish to light brown, with pores round & with age twisted & labyrinthine. 3–8 pores per millimetre."

Trametes versicolor--Turkeytail
I think anyway. It helps to know that we absolutely have not classified all fungi out there. I have photos I've posted to mycology forums and no one knows what they are. Photos are mine, unedited.

Turkeytail isn't so much "edible" (too tough) as consumable--the typical use is to steep it for a bitter but medicinal tisane as it's believed to boost the immune system (it's not poisonous, but use your judgment on that). They can also be put into soup, like bay leaves.
Word of ethics: leave a third of the young ones you find, and only if there are a lot.

For the mycophiles: a selection of Appalachia’s early spring fungi. Forgive me if I get any of these wrong, because I’m still learning how to identify all the wonderful fungi that grow in the woods around here. Incidentally, my go-to mycological bible is Mushrooms of West Virginia and the Central Appalachians, by William Roody. Maybe someday I can absorb just a fraction of the knowledge contained in this wonderful guide and become something more than a stumbling amateur.
From top: turkey tail (Trametes versicolor); a delicate Mycena, either nitrous bonnet (M. leptocephala) or stump fairy bonnet (M. alcalina); gilled polypore (Trametes betulina); witches’ butter (Tremella mesenterica), a lovely and unusual jelly fungus; and pinwheel mushroom (Marasmius rotula).

These ones I do know! Turkey-tail mushrooms (Trametes versicolor) are very distinct.

Turkey Tail
flickr
Turkey Tail by Macro Merriment Via Flickr: Trametes versicolor is a common polypore mushroom found throughout the world. Meaning 'of several colours', versicolor reliably describes this fungus that displays different colors. Because its shape and multiple colors are similar to those of a wild turkey, it is commonly called turkey tail.
