It’s almost Purim, so it’s time to share this 1845 article about two Jewish drag kings/crossdressers/trans men. I love these two and I want to be their best friend.
Tumblr media
I have no idea why Purim is referred to as the ‘Ram’s Head Festival’; it’s not named but I’m 99% sure this is about Purim based on the date and the description (the masks, and the long-established tradition of crossdressing on Purim). Maybe they got it confused with Rosh Hashanah and it’s an oblique reference to a shofar?
Absolutely incredible use of the passive voice: ‘During their scuffle with the policemen, the fair daughters of Israel were relieved of their gold bracelets and several articles of rich jewellery.’ Relieved by whom? Who can say? I’m very proud of these funky fresh boys for beating the shit out of at least one cop.

Jewish Resources (Assorted)
Since my last post seemed to be helpful to a lot of people, I thought I’d make another to share some additional resources. This list includes a bunch of stuff, meant for Jewish people in general. I would definitely encourage you to explore them! There’s a lot of useful stuff here. Goyim are welcome to reblog, just please be respectful if you’re adding tags or comments. Jewish Multiracial Network, an organization for multiracial Jewish families and Jews of Color Sefaria, a free virtual library of Jewish texts Sephardic Studies Digital Library Museum “The SSDC includes key books, archival documents, and audio recordings that illuminate the history, culture, literature, politics, customs, music, and cuisine of Sephardic Jews all expressed in their own language, Ladino.” (from their website) The SMQN, an organization for LGBTQ+ Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews Keshet, a group for LGBTQ+ Jews JQY, a group for LGBTQ+ Jews with a focus on those in Orthodox communities  Queer Jews of Color Resource List (note: this list is way more than just resources, there’s a LOT there) JQ International: “JQ celebrates the lives of LGBTQ+ Jews and their allies by transforming Jewish communities and ensuring inclusion through community building, educational programs, and support and wellness services, promoting the healthy integration of LGBTQ+ and Jewish identities.” (from their website) Jews of Color Initiative, an organization dedicated to teaching about intersectionality in the Jewish community, focuses on research, philanthropy, field building, and community education Nonbinary Hebrew Project: It’s hard to describe, but they’re working to find/create/add suffixes that represent nonbinary genders in Hebrew. If you speak Hebrew/another gendered language, you might know what I mean about gendered suffixes. Jewish Mysticism Reading List  (These are related to our closed practices, goyim should NOT be practicing these things) Ritualwell (you can find prayers and blessings related to specific things here, I personally like that they have blessings related to gender identity)  Guimel, an LGBTQ+ support group for the Jewish Community in Mexico. The site is in Spanish. I’m not a native speaker, but I was still able to read a little bit of it.  SVARA: “SVARA’s mission is to empower queer and trans people to expand Torah and tradition through the spiritual practice of Talmud study.” (From their website) TransTorah is definitely an older website, but there are still some miscellaneous pdfs and resources up on the “Resources” page. Jewish Disabilities Advocates: “The JFS Jewish Disabilities Advocates program was created to raise awareness and further inclusion of people with disabilities within Jewish organizations and the larger Jewish community.” (from their website) Jewish Food Society (recipes, have not spent a lot of time browsing here but maybe I should in the future) Jewish Blind & Disabled, an organization that operates mainly in providing accessible housing and living. Jewish Braille Institute International: “The JBI Library provides individuals who are blind, visually impaired, physically handicapped or reading disabled with books, magazines and special publications of Jewish and general interest in Audio, Large Print and Braille formats.” (from their website) Their services are free!)

like the reason jkr denied book burnings of trans medical books isn't even antisemitism, it's because she refuses to acknowledge trans people existed in the past.
is it holocaust denial? yes, that's a documented event that happened as part of the holocaust, and she's denying it. but why do you care? because it's about you, it's about her engaging in holocaust denial to deny trans identities, not about her actually denying a part of the holocaust.
some of you don't even care the reasons those books were burned is because they were written by a Jewish doctor and Nazis saw gender affirming care as a Jewish conspiracy to weaken the population, you're only mad we lost years of trans research, and that a terf is denying that.
you don't care about the holocaust, you don't care about holocaust denial, you don't care about Nazi book burnings, you care Nazis burned these specific books that relate to your identity and that one popular terf is trying to say that never happened.

a gut vokh and shavua tov to trans jews and those who love us!
Today, SVARA's Trans Halakha Project released two incredible bodies of work: the first iteration of their Teshuvot and Tefillat Trans: Blessings and Rituals for Trans Lives. Read them, share them, save them for later, and know in your heart that you are not alone.
This is a HUGE moment in Jewish history where Trans-centered Torah is being actively cultivated by and for trans Jews. Ancestors of blessed memory like Rabbi Yochanan, Qalonymos ben Qalonymos, Berel-Beyle, Magnus Hirschfeld, and Leslie Feinberg have paved the way for us to be embracing our full selves as authorities in this tradition, not outsiders.
Trans lives are worth living. Trans wisdom is worth celebrating. Trans Jews are worth loving.
We are full members of our communities, and any Judaism that claims otherwise is incomplete.

Purim Sameach!
!פורים שמח
I spent all weekend making my shalach manot and I’m well and truly exhausted. I set up a shalach manot exchange for my shul so I felt obligated to pull all the stops out.
The hamantaschen flavours are: Nutella, walnut and honey, Cherry Bakewell (cherry jam, homemade marzipan and dried cherries) and lemon and poppyseed (lemon curd filling with poppyseed dough). I felt like different flavours of hamantaschen didn’t really count as two different ‘portions’, so I also made hadgi badah, an Iraqi-Jewish almond & cardamom cookie. They were really easy to make and absolutely delicious, will definitely be making again.
And yes, I did make my own labels; I had leftover sticker paper from another project and I can never resist the opportunity to go a little bit overboard.
I’m really curious what other people put in their shalach manot! Please comment or reblog and tell me what you’re doing, especially with pictures.

"And G-d cast a deep sleep upon the human and he slept, and He took from his side and closed the flesh at the site" [Bereishit (Genesis) 2:21]
"כִּי הִנֵּה כַּחֹֽמֶר בְּיַד הַיּוֹצֵר. בִּרְצוֹתוֹ מַרְחִיב וּבִרְצוֹתוֹ מְקַצֵּר. כֵּן אֲנַֽחְנוּ בְּיָדְךָ חֶֽסֶד נוֹצֵר."
"Like the clay in the hands of the potter. With his will he expands it, and with his will he contracts it. So too we are in Your Hands, Preserver of Kindness." [from Yom Kippur liturgy]
Thinking of the creation of Chava (Eve) from Adam's side as the removal of womanhood from Adam and affirming him as a man and Chava as a woman, making the act a gender affirming surgery, the first gender affirming surgery ever.
