One of my personal favorite things to do is make characters be trans but in the most convoluted way possible. And also having many different timelines for it so I can do whatever I want and have as many contradicting headcanons as I want. In some timelines to me Mob is trans masc. But also to me ???% is sometimes a trans woman who uses she/it pronouns. Also sometimes Shou uses he/it. Also sometimes I make Adora a trans woman who realized she was trans because of the sword. Sometimes Teru is a trans woman. Sometimes he's cis but in the most trans way possible. Sometimes Hunters a trans man sometimes he's nonbinary sometimes she's a trans woman. Sometimes he's all at once somehow. Sometimes grimwalker cis is not human cis. No character I touch is cis by the time I'm done with them.

- adora realizes they hate their voice when they’re consistently comparing their own voice to catra and bow’s. he likes how low bow’s is and how raspy catra’s is and wishes his sounded like a combination of the two

- bow notices it because adora becomes much more resigned and quieter and he asks them what’s going on. that’s when adora gets really embarrassed and explains

- immediately bow explains voice training and how he started before testosterone. adora starts doing the same

- it takes a while for it to feel natural but soon enough adora’s voice is much lower than before, without testosterone, and catra first really notices when they’re at taco bell drive thru and adora’s ordering

- catra stares in awe at adora and when they pull away from the order box and notice her staring, they just ask “what?” before catra responds with “that was so hot”

- after a drunken night playing nhl 20, adora tells bow he’s been considering T because still hates his voice but also doesn’t want to be perceived as a man since he takes so much pride in his lesbian identity

- that’s when bow explains microdosing and how a ton of non-binary people do that and adora very happily freaks out at that

- bow goes with adora to their first consultation because they asked him to, plus glimmer and catra both have sorority meetings at the time so it’s just the two of them

- adora gives bow the tightest hug ever after the consultation and thanks him for being there for them through everything

She-Ra’s bisexual rep is damn good and this is why

EXHIBIT A: BOW -- his relationship with Glimmer, his short try with Perfuma, and his crushing on Sea Hawk, literally from the moment they met. I guess you can count his interaction with Kyle, too, but I personally found that to be more platonic even if I think their dynamic is interesting. 

“Your name is Sea Hawk!? That’s the coolest name I’ve ever heard!” (Cue Mermista letting out her longest uuuuggggghhhhh ever on her throne in Salineas)

I totally get it, Bow. This man’s stupid shiny mustache, titty window and massive ego also makes me lose all of my brain cells.

He went to Princess Prom with Perfuma!

They were so domestic in the portal that I’m not convinced that Glimbow weren’t dating in their “perfect” reality.

I guess we can count this, too, but I think Bow was just using his masculine charm and sick biceps to distract Kyle from what’s going on behind him. Poor guy. 

This got super duper long because the rep is so vast, so I’m going to put the rest under a cut. I’m only going to use the canon bi characters, so this includes Mermista, Sea Hawk, Glimmer, Bow, Micah, Angella, Entrapta and an honorable mention of Perfuma who explored dating a guy but is canonically a lesbian. Apparently there’s no confirmation for this other than ND liking someone’s tweet saying perfuma is a trans lesbian. So her sexuality is up to audience interpretation.

EXHIBIT B: QUEEN GLIMMAH -- her relationship with Bow and her chemistry with Catra. (If there is more I’m sorry, Glimmer is one of my favorite characters but she has so much going on that I can’t remember any other moments with romantic tension towards other characters.) One could argue she had moments with Adora, as well, but I saw them as more platonic. 

But dear God, this poor girl cannot win. People who don’t ship Glimbow seem to insist she’s a lesbian, or that Glimbow is a het ship. They definitely get the brunt of this bullshit and I’m sick of seeing it. 

First of all, she’s a walking pastel bi-pride flag.

Canonically I think Bow’s crush on Sea Hawk is one-sided, but if Mermista wasn’t in the picture (or, you know, if they wanted to explore a poly relationship) I think they could have had something. 

Bow has been fawning over him all day and he still only has eyes for Mermista.

I actually love that his fantasy version of Mermista is just her, but slightly more anime. This man wouldn’t change a damn thing about his beloved, but he might be a big fucking weeb.

ND has confirmed this is Sea Hawk’s ex in a tweet (all of the s4 wrong answers became s5 canon), but....

DT is another enigma, like Perfuma. I can see them flirting with both masc and fem characters, so they might be bi or pan, but it’s really up to audience interpretation. 

EXHIBIT D: MERMISTA, her relationship with Sea Hawk, her massive crush on Adora, her flirting with Perfuma, and her inability to function around hot people.

Adora transforms into a hot, buff warrior princess right in front of her eyes. “That’s.... different...”

Mermista masks a lot of her emotions, just like I do, so I imagine this is going through her head in this scene: “Oh great, these two incredibly hot women are are in my space right now, time to die i guess”

“You see what I have to deal with?” That blush tho. “He’s just my ride” my ass, you aren’t fooling anyone, dearest. You have a fleet of ships, probably a whole ass navy at your disposal. Failing that, you’re a literal mermaid who could have swam there if needed.

Some not-so-subtle flirting with Perfuma. I love to imagine they dated when they were like, younger teens.

As much as Mermista tries to hide her feelings, everyone knew this was the only way to break the mind control. Only someone she loved could get her to feel so strongly that it would override it (even if that feeling is annoyance, and if you’ve never intentionally and playfully annoyed your partner, you’re stronger than I am).

To be fair, I don’t really see any references in the show to her being attracted to anyone other than Hordak and tech, but according to the SPOP Wiki, ND confirmed she is bisexual, and this first bulletpoint also touches on her attraction in the show as well:

The wikipedia isn’t 100% reliable but it’s a good place to start, I did go out of my way to pull confirmation tweets and stuff where I could find them. But being fanmade, the wiki isn’t always a great source of information. 

EXHIBIT F: MICAH AND ANGELLA

Another walking pastel bi-pride flag. 

To be fair, again: these two are only confirmed bisexual under the blanket statement that all of ND’s characters are queer. They still count, though, in my heart. We stan a short bi king and his tall bi wife. (I only teared up a little bit getting this screenshot)

Honorable mention: Perfuma, who, for all intents and purposes, I thought was bisexual until I read her wiki. Because this is how she’s presented in canon. 

God, I ship these two so hard though. I love when the grumpy one is soft for the sunshine one ;~;

Scorfuma is pretty fucking cute too, though. I just think that it’s neat to also include someone experimenting with their preferences, too, if that was the intention behind her relationships in the show. 

Perfuma is widely regarded by the fandom to be sapphic, but just because she ended up with a woman doesn’t mean she couldn’t be bisexual. I think it could go wither way -- she could have been experimenting with her preferences and then determined she only wants to date women, or she could just be a bisexual person in a same-sex relationship. 

If you stuck around this long, thanks! I don’t want to pretend to be an expert on any of this, just a real bisexual person who sees herself in these characters and hates to see that all erased by fans of the show who insist they’re straight or heterosexual couples just because they’re opposite sex. Or, again, that because Perfuma ended up in a wlw relationship she is exclusively sapphic. Bisexual people are still bisexual no matter what the gender of the person they’re partnered up with is.

why mlm relationships are never shown in kid’s shows

I wrote this angry and exhausted. good luck.

With the exception of Bow’s dads and Benson and Troy from Kipo, I struggle to name a canon mlm relationship in an animated kid’s show. And yet, there seems to be an endless amount of lesbian relationships- Marceline and Bubblegum, Catra and Adora, Ruby and Sapphire, plus a shit ton more from She-Ra alone. Don’t get me wrong, this is a huge step for queer people everywhere, and I am so grateful to grow up in this generation and witness this acceptance. And although the relationships between Troy and Benton, as well as George and Lance are both very sweet, neither have the growth and emotional connection formed in any other relationship I’ve seen on screen. And don’t get me started on how much Voltron fucked up queer characters. Good lord, talk about burry your gays. 

But back to my point. Why are male relationships so rarely shown on screen, and almost never portrayed in the same light as lesbian or heterosexual couples? As far as I can count, there have been about two mlm kisses on a kid’s show, and I don;t want to count Voltron, because it was shit. So why? 

At first, having a lesbian couple on screen was shocking, and many Karens flipped their shit and rushed their children off to church when they saw Steven Universe episode 49 for the first time in 2015. And over time, it became more and more acceptable, with masterpieces like The Legend Of Korra, She-Ra, The Owl House, and Adventure Time. But it wasn’t until early 2016 that there was a confirmed mlm couple on screen (Deputy Durland and Sheriff Blubbs), and even then, there was no kiss, and they were always side characters with probably no more than an hour of screen time total. 

Oversexualization of lesbians is a huge issue for the wlw community, from inaccurate porn to asking for threesomes on the street (a lot of people, mainly men, are really fucked up). But two women can hold hands in public, and still be considered “just friends,” but the second two men do it, they’ve got assholes screaming about how they’re going to hell. And yet, oversexualization of gay men is also a huge issue, mainly for straight women. I cannot tell you how many straight ladies i know want a Gay Best Friend. They think it’s hot, exciting, sexy, when two men kiss. They think it’s hot to be “sinful.” They pretend to be supportive, but are really just in it for their own fantasy. Most of the mlm novels I’ve ever read are written by straight women. 

Back to my point, again. There’s a stereotype pushed on gay men to be sexy and horny all the time. To be feminine, and basically be throwing themself on every man in sight. It’s so hurtful. People form assumptions about people based on how they act, but if he hadn’t come out, I never would’ve expected Benson to be queer. He was done so well, not oversexualized, not made creepy or stereotypical in any way. Even his romance did so well, which is where things sometimes fall apart in terms of representation. 

People (mainly Karens) think it’s a terrible influence on children to have queer shows, because they don;t want their children to grow up queer at all. Lesbian relationships are more accepted by most people, because women are “supposed to be sensitive” and “it’s ok, it’s just a phase.” But once it’s a queer man, it’s more “ugh, you’re a freak and a sinner!!” because men are supposed to be emotionless machines, right? (WRONG). And once you put oversexualiztation into the mix, gay men are being pulled into a spiral of stereotypes and toxic masculinity. 

And, it’s not just that. We write what we experience. Straight men write straight men (that tend to come across as queer in non-kid shows, like Sherlock or Supernatural). Queer people write queer people, and I cannot think of a single gay man who has written a script for any kid’s animation show. To quote a tumblr post I once saw, “mlm non-canon relationships tend to dominate fandoms because straight men have no fucking clue how to make women correctly.” Not their exact words, just what I remember. If queer women, or just actually accepting women, write queer characters, it’ll be easier to portray them as female, like how it’s easy for me to write trans masc characters. I would have serious trouble writing, say, a 50 year old straight woman, because I can’t project myself onto her in any way. People write what they know, what they understand.  

So. Why? Because if a film studio were to allow a gay man to write a script, there would be a high chance it wouldn;t be aired as a children’s show, as most people consider mlm relationships to be all about sex, and definitely cannot be a cute magical romance, like Ruby and Sapphire. Or, if they were to air a cute gay magical romance, it wouldn’t be written by a gay man. It would be written by some straight women who probably thinks about gay sex more than her own partner. There would be too many stereotypes pushed on the kids, like being feminine, or having a straight girl for a best friend, and make it worse than Voltron. 

I love all the shows with queer characters in it. They make me feel right at home. But I would love more mlm romance, for me to feel that home feeling, and for young gay boys to see themselves represented on screen as a real person, and not an afterthought.

Glimmer reached for the red velvet of the curtain, concerned about her lover but still wanting to honour their privacy and not intrude until they were ready to reveal themselves. “How’s the binder? It’s not too tight, right? You know the doctor said if it’s too tight across your upper bust to loosen it a notch or two, okay?” She called, trying to keep calm and unfurl the ruffles in her own pastel pink hair. She couldn’t wait to see the new look her partner rocked, but at the same time wanted Adora to be safe and comfortable in how they looked. 

This new journey they were on, from realising who they were and wanted to be, to recognising how they wanted to be addressed and considered, Glimmer had wanted to be there every step of the way. She’d been so supportive, wanted to go above and beyond. 

Now they could both see the effects of her being there for her partner. 

Adora pulled back the curtain a little; Glimmer could both hear and feel them catching their breath behind the red velvet before they unveiled themselves, from white pants to black jacket and sneakers too. The new shorter undercut made their hair look perfectly masculine, in combination with the square broadness of their shoulders, and the black angles of how they wore their eye makeup now. Even without the hormones, Adora looked visibly less feminine, carried themselves so unlike a girl.

“Well? How do I... How do I look?”

Glimmer was already welling up, her eyes sparkling with faint tears like the glitter in her pastel pink and lilac hair. Their partner looked incredible, so new, like they’d been rebuilt from the ground up and not just in the choice of clothing (which was stunning enough anyway). They pulled the curtain back all the way and revealed the full stature of their tall frame, the complimentary tones and how well they worked on their pinkish skin and bright eyes. 

Their binder was barely covered at all, a small tube top around it and the straps obscured by the black suit jacket they’d elected to go with. Combined with their new white pants and the childish yet boyish sneakers, Adora radiated such a new and refreshing energy - manly and somehow softly dominant even when they were vulnerable like this. Glimmer already wanted to willingly feel and be smaller than them, to be under Adora and let them hold her however they wanted. 

“How do you feel?” She deflected, more interested in them than anything else. She needed to know Adora felt new, felt more like they wanted to be, how they’d expressed they had wanted to be weeks ago in bed before sleeping. 

Back then they still had that long hair, bunched up in a loose pony tail they already wanted chopped off. With this new and slightly messy undercut, Glimmer secretly fantasised about running her fingers through the knotty yellow curls as Adora held her closely. But she filed these secret wishes away for later, a little hesitant to touch her new Adora, the new force she wanted to inspect. 

“I feel... Really good, Glim...”

“You look amazing, Adora,” she expressed indulgently, reaching for their lapels, the slim fit of their jacket clinging perfectly to their chest. “I love this...”

“You don’t think it’s too much? Or not enough?” Adora asked, pulling again at the hem of their new jacket, trying to cover their exposed and chiseled abdomen from view. Glimmer had other ideas, taking their hands.

“You’re perfect... dude?” Glimmer tried, seeing a look of indifference in her lover’s eyes. Adora hadn’t landed specifically on he/him pronouns yet, and was unsure if they would - for now, they were simply they, they were Adora. “You should be proud of yourself. I’m so proud of you, Adora...”

The genderfluid blonde took that in their stride, owning it. Pride; they felt it, sensed it in their bones as they carried themselves inside the new clothing of black and white. Feeling their chest flattened against their body, compressed and showing no sign that they had breasts at all, feeling the false swell of their packer in their bow shorts under the white pants. There was pride in their flag, and now Adora felt pride in themselves. Reaching forward, they took Glimmer’s cheeks in the palms of their rugged and boyish hands. 

With a hefty grasp and sense of masculine aura about them, tasting the sweet berry blossom of Glimmer’s lips had never felt sweeter, and their girlfriend never happier.
