Katara knew she was a woman from a pretty young age, but as she started to explore her gender more, she found that it was a little more complicated.

Instead of asking herself what she was, she asked a lot of questions about what she wanted, and while most of those answers basically boiled down to “be read as a woman” sometimes the answer was “to not be perceived” or “to be perceived outside of the binary”

When she’s thirteen she comes out again as a nonbinary woman

People are super supportive of her, but it’s hard for them to really give her all the emotional support that she needs when they’re also trying to live through a war

When Aang comes around, she finally has another nonbinary pal, and the two of them grow really close really quickly (gay people may speedrun through the stages of friendship, but they have nothing on trans folks desperate for other trans friends, trust me)

Talking with Aang about their gender and about how they experience it (Aang doesn’t experience dysphoria, only euphoria), Katara grows more comfortable identifying as nonbinary

People definitely can use they/them for Katara, she doesn’t mind, but she vastly prefers she/her. Really the only people she likes to refer to her with they/them pronouns are Aang, Hakoda, and Sokka.

When she meets Suki for the first time, she feels really connected to her because Suki’s also transfem and nonbinary and also cool as all hell, and they become friends really fast.

Suki also doesn’t have nonbinary friends, so meeting Aang and especially Katara is really awesome for her as well.

Suki’s also pretty openly bisexual, and while Katara suspected she might be bisexual as well, her baby crush on Suki pretty much confirmed it.

However, that crush on Suki goes away pretty quickly, and later, when they meet Yue, Katara has her first big crush experience.

Katara Knows that Yue is Not Straight but she also knows that Yue is really into her brother, and she respects that.

But then, Yue and Sokka break up, and Yue and Katara spend a lot of time together, and a lot of that time is them casually brushing hands and tucking a lock of each other’s hair behind their ears (you know, as the sapphics do)

After the war, Yue comes to the SWT to help rebuild, and they spend a lot of time together, and Katara’s extremely overwhelmed by it because Yue looks so pretty all the time, but she manages to hold it together until one night they spend the entire night talking under the stars, holding hands

The sun comes up, and Katara’s afraid that once the sun comes up the magic of lying here and talking to Yue like she’s never talked to anyone is going to fade, so she asks Yue if she can kiss her

And Yue says yes, and it’s everything Katara imagined and more <3
