Fancy a trip? Then welcome to door no. 19, where you can set sail on the SS Great Britain
Tumblr media
SS Great Britain
Her history here:
When Brunel’s ocean liner, was built in the nineteenth century the SS GREAT BRITAIN was a bold attempt by a British company to break the American monopoly of the trans-Atlantic passenger trade. Launched by Prince Albert on 19 July 1843, she was the largest and most technically innovative ship of her day, because she was the first iron hulled, screw propelled ship. Her first voyage to America began on 26 July 1845, and she covered 3,100 miles in 14 days and 21 hours.
On the return journey, because of the loss of propeller blades, she used sail only, but still completed the voyage to Liverpool in 20 days. In 1846, however, on her fifth voyage, she ran aground in Dundrum Bay, County Down. It was not until August of the following year that she was refloated and towed back to Liverpool, and, in 1850, was sold to Gibbs, Bright & Co. for service to Australia. She was significantly altered at this time.
In 1854, she was refitted as a troopship for the Crimean War and again in 1857 she carried reinforcements to Bombay to deal with the Indian Mutiny. Returning to the Australian run, she carried the first touring English cricket side. In 1876, she was put up for sale at Birkenhead, but not bought until 1882. Her new owners, Anthony Gibbs, Sons & Co. converted her entirely to a sailing vessel for transporting coal to San Francisco and returning with wheat. After two such voyages, in 1886, she was dismasted by a hurricane off Cape Horn and she put into the Falkland Islands. As repairs were considered too expensive, she became a hulk for storing coal and wool. On April 14 1937, she was towed a few miles out of Port Stanley to shallow water in Sparrow Cove; holes were punched in her bottom and she settled on the seabed. The organisation required to co-ordinate the task of recovery came into being in 1968, led by Dr Ewan Corlett. In April 1970, she was refloated, returning to her original dock Bristol in July that year where she underwent a major conservation programme.
In 2006, an appeal was launched to help restore the masts of the SS GREAT BRITAIN. Two of the masts and part of a third needed to be urgently replaced as they had become badly degraded. The vessel was successful in winning the prestigious Gulbenkian Prize as UK Museum of the Year 2006, which brought with it £100,000 in prize money. This was put towards the costs of the masts. The ship also won two awards at the Museums and Heritage Awards for Excellence 2006 conference in the restoration and conservation category as well as permanent exhibition. The project was also awarded the Civic Trust Award 2006 for accessibility. These Awards follow the relaunch of GREAT BRITAIN after work costing £11.3 million to transform her into a major visitor attraction and museum, as well as to preserve the vessel for future generations. The ship saw more than 160,000 visitors between July 2005 and September 2006.

"Mom," Savannah's voice trembled over the trans-Atlantic phone call.
Bianca woke up a bit late today after yesterday's neighborhood ranch party. She was still in daze when she picked up the call. "Savannah? Early in the morning? All well?" She was used to getting afternoon calls from her daughter who stayed on the island of Corsica. The place was clockwise 7 hours ahead of her home in Texas. They had set up a routine where Savannah would call after she called it a day in Corsica while Bianca would have just finished her lunch. This early morning call meant Savannah was calling in the middle of her day, leaving Bianca worried.
"Mom, he is … He is here."
"He? Who are you…Oh!" Suddenly it dawned on Bianca whom her daughter is talking about and why her voice is so unstable.
"Is he there on an official tour or…"
"He came to meet me, meet us."
"Does he know?"
"He knows everything." Savannah sighed.
"Oh dear! Is he going to… I mean what is he planning?"
"He came to clear the misunderstandings, Mom."
"Savvie, we knew this would happen one day. Thankfully, he is not here to do any harm."
"But mom, what if…"
"You need to give him a chance, my child. You know he is not any regular guy."
"It's not about him. It's about me, what If I'm not…"
"Savannah Jane Walker, never ever think less about you. Don't be so harsh on yourself. I know it's a tough decision but I believe in you and I trust that you will take a wise step."
Savannah whispered over a sob, "Thank you mom."
Bianca picked up her deflated tone, "Hey girl, don't cry. Don't be afraid. You are not alone.
Whatever you decide, I will be with you."
"I know mom. You have always been. I have to go now. Will call you later."
"Bye sweetheart. God bless you."
Savannah gave an assertive reply and ended the call.
Her hand was still clutching the phone while Bianca's eyes were fixed far away in the distance… Memories of yesteryears replaying in front of her eyes.
****************
Few years ago…..
It was a busy day at the ranch. Bianca was tending to a filly in the stables when John came in search of her. "There you are! You gotcha mail." He waved a white envelope in the air.
"Mail?" Blanca wondered. She had all her bills cleared. There should not be any new notice from any of the banks now. She rubbed away the dirt on her hands on the sides of her apron and extended her arm to grab the envelope with a feeling of dread.
"Thank you John." She flipped the cover to find out from whom it was, but the sender information was blank.
John still stood there, curiously eyeing the mail. She tore the envelope trying to curb her own anxiety. When she saw Savannah's neat handwriting, she let out a sigh of relief. "It's from Savannah." She waved of her hand, making it light to John.
He too smiled and took her leave. She stood there with a smile plastered on her face. As soon as he went out of sight, Bianca rushed into her home. She was restless and this letter might give her some clue. Savannah had been out of reach for the past few days. Her phone wasn't working. Bastein had no clue where she was and it had left Bianca biting her nails.
She sat on her bed and withdrew her reading glasses from the rustic bedside drawer.
" Dear Mom,
I know you must be worried about my whereabouts. Please be assured that I am absolutely fine and safe and I will call you soon.
Mom, you were right in guessing the reason for my happiness in the last few months. Well, you have always been right.  I did finally feel complete with the man of my dreams. I thought maybe one day I will be able to tell you everything.
Even after Drake left Cordonia, I never felt alone.  There was this man… I have always liked him. Two months ago, a small accident brought us closer and then one day I couldn't stop myself and we broke all the barriers to be together. I was happy and that's when you too picked the signs . You were right mom.
But I guess Walker's are never meant to live an easy life. I don't know how to say this. It's a bit awkward to tell you all of this through a letter. I conceived, Mom. I wanted to tell him first, but things took a nasty turn here and I couldn't let him know. Moreover, he is kind of from a noble family so he cannot take the responsibility. My presence here will be a deterrent to his duties and so to make things easier for everyone, I decided to leave Cordonia forever. Maybe there’s another universe where we have the happy ending we always wanted.
I am sorry if I let you down but I still want to say this to you that you are the best and I am missing you even more at this turning point of my life. I am in a bit of Hurry now but I promise I will call you as soon as I reach my destination.
I love you, Mom.
Your daughter,
Savvie.

Bianca removed her glasses to wipe the tears in her eyes. "My little girl!" She held the letter to her heart. " I am so sorry you have to go through all these things alone."
As she cried, her eyes rested on the bedside photo frame of them together. She picked it up and looked at Savannah and said. "My baby, I knew it from the beginning. I wish I had warned you to keep your feelings for him locked inside. It's impossible to not fall in love with him, my child but he is a royal. There is no future there, at least not under Constantine's watch."
She closed her eyes praying, "Dear God, please help my children. Help Savannah and Liam to find their path together."
Liam always held a special place in Bianca's heart. As a young boy, he had shown compassion and love to one and all, be it noble or commoner. He never differentiated, even when he grew up to be a crown prince. He was the reason for Drake's stability after Jackson's death. He always stole her heart when he covered up for Savannah with his innocent smile. Many such moments made her believe Liam to be an extended part of her family. She knew Savvie and Liam would be together one day but she never thought their relationship would be so short lived.
She tried to get over her wavering mind and continued praying, " God, please give me the strength to support my daughter through her difficult times till she gets back to him."
And so the years passed on while Bianca remained hopeful for that day to arise when her prayers would be answered.
********************
Present day....
Bianca smiled wistfully. She kept the phone back on the table and reclined in her bed. "Thank you my lord, It's finally over. My children are going to unite again."
She got up and opened the side drawers to retrieve a photo frame. She placed Liam's photo next to Savannah'sphoto that was already there and gave them a flying kiss. "God bless you both."
Bianca stood as a pillar in Savannah's life in the years she lived estranged. It was all worth it in the end.

happy 10th birthday, pacrim!!! fic self-promo post
I wrote a lot of Pacrim fics but these remain my favorites!!!!
The Weight of Your Bones - Genuinely one of my favorite things I have ever written. Hot Dads, but also a lot of meditation on the whole Stacker-Tamsin-Luna thing. (7K, Explicit)
Vanities - I'll let the AO3 summary speak for this one! "Every Jaeger pilot agrees: drivesuit scars have to be earned." (<1k, Teen)
Atlas - I love Hercules Hansen and how he just *clenches fist* nobly suffers. (2k, Teen)
Wear That Uniform Well - A lot of people like "Bottle Rocket Principle" but I wrote two fics about Tendo being a trans man and how that goes for him and this is the far better one. (4.6k, Explicit)
Edge of the Atlantic - Is this a realistic version of the post-movie press tour? No, absolutely not. Do I love it anyway? Yes. (2K, Teen)

Join the revolution
Three beautiful autistic/neurodivergent trans women musicians came and stayed with me/us on their way home to Brooklyn, NY from tour. We had an impromptu jam session by the fire (with tea and snacks) and talked about revolution.
I am autistic and non-binary. It’s pretty common really—many neurodivergent people are also LGBTQ, and trans in particular. Because as someone who sees much of human behavior as a performance we have to learn (and mimic), we see the performative aspect of many things. And the masks, and the forced compliance. Most of us also see that gender is fuzzy around the edges. Or that there aren’t edges, at all.
We sang songs and played with my cat and talked about fighting for Justice. We have to be justice warriors, and to make friends across our communities, to stand up against the hard things. But we can do it with story and song and toasty fireside chats. Art is revolution. Books, especially the banned ones, are revolution. Listen to authors and creators who are allies (like Atlantic writer Ed Yong, or @neil-gaiman who openly supports and writes trans characters, or Judy Blume who spoke out against JKR); read books by trans authors like Kacen Callender or poems by Robin Gow, and there are many more. Listen to music by my wonderful friend Mya Byrne (above) who is a star country/blues singer also working on a book for kids. Follow neurodivergent authors (I am one, but there are so many wonderful folk—and several articles and sites that list their work, fiction and nonfiction).
We are all part of the revolution. ❤️

When the Truman administration announced the European Recovery Program—known as the Marshall Plan after its originator, then-U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall—in 1947, a majority of Americans had never heard of it. And those who had weren’t too enthusiastic about a U.S. commitment to rebuild a shattered post-World War II Europe and reintegrate it into the trans-Atlantic economy. To combat widespread skepticism, the Truman administration launched a national campaign to convince the American public of the program’s importance. Speaking tours were organized with civic and trade groups. By 1948, when the Marshall Plan was signed into law with bipartisan support, opinion polls had swung in its favor, with more than 56 percent of Americans viewing it favorably. Private-sector leaders, farmers’ associations, and local civic leaders backed it, realizing that Europe’s recovery would result in greater U.S. security abroad and prosperity at home.
To lead this endeavor, U.S. President Harry S. Truman turned to Paul Hoffman, the president of one of the country’s great manufacturing companies at the time, the Studebaker Corporation, to be the administrator of the Marshall Plan. With his extensive business experience, Hoffman pioneered the infusion of private-sector rigor into an international project for postwar recovery. Hoffman needed all his business acumen and credibility as he and other Marshall Plan officials faced withering congressional oversight of how funds were being used and if they met their goals and milestones.
The Biden administration should keep Hoffman’s critical efforts in mind as representatives from 60 countries gather on Wednesday and Thursday in London for the Ukraine Recovery Conference. There is an urgent need for another Hoffman—a highly capable and recognized American to oversee and coordinate all U.S. government assistance to Ukraine. This individual would be held accountable to the U.S. Congress and the American people for achieving the stated goals of Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction, a modern Marshall Plan for Ukraine. This person also needs to make sure the American public is fully engaged in the conversation about assistance to Ukraine.
Unfortunately, no one in the Biden administration has been given responsibility for this remit. In 2022 alone, Congress has authorized more than $113 billion in military and economic support for Ukraine. With this substantial investment in Ukraine, it is unclear why the Biden administration has remained silent about what, if any, role the United States will play in Ukraine’s long-term economic recovery and reconstruction, which is essential for long-term Euro-Atlantic stability and will reduce the need for future Western support.
Some might argue that the United States, having concentrated on supporting Ukraine with military aid, should not also have a leadership role in recovery and reconstruction. Shouldn’t the Europeans, who aim to integrate postwar Ukraine economically and institutionally into the European Union, be responsible for reconstruction after Washington has done its part on the military side? These are understandable questions.
But why would the United States step aside now, after investing so much in Ukraine’s sovereignty and westward orientation? Why would the United States leave the economic benefits of reconstruction to the Europeans? Winning the war will be insufficient to reestablish security, which also requires economic recovery and deeper integration into Euro-Atlantic markets—the same logic that drove the original Marshall Plan. We know what success looks like: The 16 European Marshall Plan recipient countries are today among Washington’s closest allies and trading partners. The United States has benefited politically and economically.
Similar to the outcome of the original Marshall Plan, Ukraine’s reconstruction and economic reintegration will be one of the greatest returns on U.S. military aid to Ukraine. A strong U.S. role in reconstruction ensures that U.S. companies and know-how are an integral part of Ukraine’s recovery. Efforts such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Ukraine Business Initiative show that the U.S. private sector wants to be part of Ukraine’s long-term recovery. But the U.S. business community needs support, such as the provision of investment insurance, financing, and clarity about how confiscated Russian assets can be put to good use. The United States and other countries that have supported Ukraine could begin by establishing a risk-sharing trust fund to invest in Ukraine.
One of the reasons that the Biden administration is reluctant to lead a Marshall Plan for Ukraine is the United States’ polarized domestic debate. But rather than ceding ground to those who oppose further aid to Ukraine—including those who are openly cheering for Russia to win—policymakers should seek to shape the public debate on this issue at this critical moment. Why don’t members of Congress tell voters how rebuilding Ukraine will support U.S. companies and create jobs for Americans? U.S. financial companies, such as JPMorgan and BlackRock, have been selected by the Ukrainian government to advise on reconstruction. Philanthropists, church leaders, Rotarians, and countless other Americans are providing needed aid. Why isn’t the White House harnessing and focusing this extraordinary goodwill and opportunity?
A U.S. special envoy for Ukrainian reconstruction and recovery could initiate a nationwide campaign to begin a meaningful conversation with the American public about U.S. reconstruction assistance to Ukraine, including what is at stake and the benefits the United States can reap. Congress needs to be proactive and hold the special envoy accountable for setting and meeting stated economic goals and reconstruction objectives for a time-limited period while ensuring that all assistance efforts are designed with built-in transparency measures.
Of course, this is not just a project for Washington. A senior-level U.S. envoy is also needed to coordinate with partners providing reconstruction assistance to Ukraine. Several other G-7 countries already have dedicated envoys to oversee this task and to support their own private sectors’ activities in Ukraine, and these countries are moving ahead with their plans. The United States is not. Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics Mike Pyle, as Washington’s representative to the G-7 donor coordination platform, has too many other responsibilities to fully dedicate himself to those of a special envoy.
Ensuring that the Ukrainians can restore their territorial integrity and sovereignty will strengthen the international system. As Ukraine liberates its territories, Washington and its allies should fully support Kyiv’s efforts to rebuild, modernize, and more closely integrate into Euro-Atlantic markets. If the joint West does not take on this role, adversaries like China will gladly use the opportunity to increase their economic and geopolitical influence.
George Marshall posed three questions to Americans when announcing the Marshall Plan: What is needed? What can best be done? What must be done? These same questions need to be answered for Ukraine today, with a fourth question added: Who will lead it?

Imperial Airways 'Cambria', one of the British company’s trans-Atlantic Empire class “flying boats,” paid a goodwill visit to Toronto. This unique 88-foot long, 18-tonne aircraft had just performed a flypast over our city and was preparing to land in front of the crowds lining the CNE waterfront, when something went wrong. According to the accident investigators, a large partially submerged log punched a hole in one of the aircraft’s pontoons and this, in combination with a sudden stiff crosswind, caused Cambria to swerve and almost sink. Thanks to swift work by her crew and the crew of the Toronto Harbour Commission’s tug, Ned Hanlan, patrolling the area nearby, they were able to balance Cambria while she was towed to the commissions drydock. Necessary repairs were made and several weeks later, Cambria continued her flying tour of the province.

Hello! My name is Elena, and I am a queer singer-songwriter from Seattle, WA.
I have a single, “Eva Green Time Machine (Queer Waltz) coming out on 9/15, pun intended!
I wrote this song after waking up from a dream in which I traveled back in time. I fell in love with a woman who looked like the actress Eva Green. I convinced her to come back with me to the 21st century so we could be together.
Here is a link to a music video clip for the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv559DuUYms
Videographer Tiffany Tomkinson found and edited this clip from a public domain film (“Pandora’s Box” by P.W.Pabst, 1929) that matched the mood of the song so perfectly I got chills.
And a link to the unreleased track on Spotify: https://soundcloud.com/user-830136637-320889135/evagreentimemachinequeerwaltz/s-tYw6w7kOVMm?si=b5b76fbbca4745e2899851feb7af44f6&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing
I can send along Spotify and other streaming links once the song goes live on 9/15.

February 6, 7, and 8, 2023
Iris and I were heading to South Africa! I was so excited, Africa was my sixth continent to visit! Iris and I had booked an 8 day Groupon trip to Capetown and Mabula Game Reserve! Our tripped was booked from New York City. So we had booked a red eye flight from Seattle to NYC on Monday. That day I spent packing and getting ready for our trip. I said goodbye to Ingvar, and then went to pick up Iris. We drove down to Camano Island. Mom was taking us to the airport. I love when Mom takes me to the airport! I rarely feel anxious when Mom is taking me. Iris and I’s flight was around 10:30pm. We easily made it through security with just our carry on bags and personal items. We hung out in the lounge for a bit and had some snacks, and then took for for New York City.
Our flight was uneventful to the Big Apple. Iris and I tried to sleep, but it’s always hard to sleep on a plane. Once we arrived in NYC, we checked into a random lounge in our terminal. We had about five hours until our next flight. The lounge didn’t have much, but we had some breakfast and coffee. We charged our phones and watched the Bachelor on Hulu, on my phone. Our next flight was to Atlanta. The flight was about two and a half hours. We tried to sleep, watched TV/movies, and listened to music. Over this whole journey, I blogged on and off, trying to catch up on my recent trips.
We landed in Atlanta around 2:30pm. We had another five-ish hour layover. We went this time to a Delta lounge. We were flying the rest of the trip with Delta. Iris and I even got to take showers in the lounge—it was so luxurious! We had food, chilled, and watched the Bachelor on our layover.
Our next flight was the longest on the docket. Our flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg is the longest route that Delta has. We left Atlanta around 7:30pm, about an hour and a half delayed. The flight to Johannesburg was just over 15 hours. We slept, ate multiple meals, and kept busy on the trans-Atlantic flight.
We landed in Johannesburg on Wednesday, the 8th, around 6pm. We had to deplane, because some of the passengers were ending their journey in Johannesburg. Our plane refueled while we hung out and had a snack in the airport. Our final flight was from Johannesburg to Capetown, South Africa. After the two hour layover, we flew about two hours to Capetown, about two hours behind schedule. But, since we were with a tour via Groupon, all our transportation was handled for us, so I wasn’t worried.
We landed in Capetown around 10:30pm, on Wednesday. We traveled about 36 hours from Seattle! Once arriving in Capetown, we went through customs and got our passports stamped. We found some Gate 1 representatives waiting for us, along with other passengers. I took some South African Rand out of the ATM (I always like to have the local currency on me), and then it was time to get in the large taxi. Some of the Gate 1 travelers had different hotels, so, eventually Iris and I were dropped off at the Protea Hotel by Marriott, in the Sea Point area. We couldn’t see much around us as it was so late and dark, but we were very happy to check into our hotel! We found a note from our Gate 1 tour guide, Belinda, who we had yet to meet, about our plans for the following day. We needed to be in the conference room, breakfast eaten, at 7:30. We were gonna be tired! We got into our room and hardly unpacked, we just got ready for bed and went to bed, happy to be in South Africa. :]
