The fascination that tumblr has with Wildean aesthetics, Pre-Raphaelitism, transgressive beauty, academic culture, etc. is interesting because the effect of it is almost entirely the opposite of the 19th century aestheticism ideal.

In the late 19th century, the aggrandizement of beauty served as a radical critique - it called to question how capitalism, industrialization, and standardization were threatening craftsmanship, nature, artistic freedom, etc. It celebrated the aesthetic, but (intentionally or not) saw it only fulfilled in some transaesthetic phenomena.

But that obsession with beauty can only have some sort of transcendental meaning as long as there are ‘enclaves’ of art or culture outside of commodity production (something that’s certainly not the case today).
