I've reached the end stages of painting Mx Maia, wherein I sharpen up the edges and paint finer detail until doing so shifts from feeling soothing to stressful and I start thinking that every paintstroke is making it worse.

That's how I know when I've finished.

I didn't used to be able to finish paintings. Once I'd begun to like whatever I'd made, I'd then become paralysed by the fear that I would "ruin it".

*Sigh*

Then I started (and kept on) telling myself; "If I got it here, then I can take it the rest of the way too."

This is the first time I've ever felt sadness approaching grief at the prospect of my time working on a painting coming to an end.

Fear be gone, and good f*ing riddance!

Maia Lilith is far and away my favourite creation I've ever painted. She's been a balm, a light, a galvenizing guide, and a gosh darn delight to work with.

I can't wait to print her up to A0 and meet her in all her glorious (hopefully life-sized!) detail 😁

The next fear frontier will be putting prints up here for sale so I can share her with all of y'all who would like to see her zoomed and enhanced ❤️‍🔥 Eep!

This probably shouldn’t need saying, but fuck it, this is Tumblr right?

Between the concept of a work of fiction in the mind of an author and the creation of a piece of fan fiction there are multiple points where that concept will be transformed, most notable (perhaps) being when a person reads a book (Or listens to an audio book (which adds another layer, so I’m not even going by there))

A reader sees these little glyphs on the page and translates those into words, into concepts, in their mind. This is miraculous! I help children read, and this process is amazing. That we can take a thought, translate it into marks on paper (or a screen) and then someone reassembles a closely related thought in another mind! Amazing!

Does anyone expect this process not to introduce a certain amount of noise (I don’t like the negative connotations, but it’s an otherwise appropriate word) or context, or simply other stuff? A word may trigger cascades of thoughts in one mind quite unlike those triggered in another, thoughts may pull at threads of other thoughts: dragging whole emotional blankets down with them…some words may produce resonance in one mind, and a dull thud in another

We know words have different emotional weight, baggage, for different people: consider moist

So if an individual’s take on a piece of fiction differs from your own, why the surprise? I’m not talking about errors in comprehension here, or someone actually misreading something: I am simply saying that the act of reading is itself transformative

And if I then go and write fanfic that you, my dear, do not like? That looks, to me, to be a you problem
