Man fuck studying heres more op headcanons i adore or made up
Sanji is french and italian. He knows french and italian and bro will be struggling to speak sometimes bc his trilingual ass will be like "I FORGOT THE FUCKING WORD-"
Robin knows a fuck ton of languages and by extension her and sanji are besties
she will entertain him by replying with whatever language he talks to her in and she doesnt mind :)
chopper also knows french but bc its canadian french both him and sanji are just like "bro what the fuck did u just say"
hispanic luffy <3 that is all
im aware oda said luffy is brazilian but i simply say he is brazilian and mexican bc i have the freedom of creativity
zoro and sanji cussing each other out and then it devolves into insults in their native language and now theyre throwing hands on the deck
robin is laughing at them bc she understands them both and sanji is like half flirting half insulting the swordsman and refuses to translate for anyone bc its funnier to make everyone guess lmao
Usopp has GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) (i also have GAD and i feel it in my bones that he has it too idk i dont have any sources)
Luffy, Law, and Kid should NEVER be left alone together bc someone is either gonna end up on the floor in pain or some structure will be broken.
You think law would be the mediator? Absolutely Not. He's the instigator if Kid starts it.
Nami would hoard candles for sure. The womens bedroom always smells amazing <3
Luffy has cuddled with everyone on the ship at least once successfully. Its like a right of passage at this point. Not even brook's bony ass can escape LMAO
Ship headcanons are all over the place for me esp when i like most ships but luffy's concept of romance would be nonexistent until he actually catches feelings lmao
he would literally look at them one day and be like "OH I LIKE THEM!!! :D" and nobody would catch on for WEEKS except robin and probably Jimbei

Sky Headcanons for Sky's birthday month!
FOR MY FAVORITE BOY <3
He handles stressful situations by completely denying in his brain that he's even bothered. Like... Warriors pushes things off for later, so they don't bother him at the time and then he can emotionally address them after the fact. Sky pushes things off, period. He doesn't even register that something bothered him until it bursts out of him days to weeks after the fact, and because he did such a good job of, just, not reacting to it initially, he has no idea why he's suddenly upset. Like, he'll hang tough and support everyone and even cry a little bit when Twi gets hurt, but he's the most put together of the bunch. Two weeks later, he just loses it, and even he doesn't know why. That's how he emotionally processes big things.
Sky sometimes forgets to eat. Like some days he's just... tired. And he's always tired one way or another in general, but some days he's so tired he'll just nap or chill around Skyloft or the camp and just... doesn't think to eat. Or when he does he's too unmotivated to do anything about it. Wild often shoves food into his face to get him to do something. He'll eat if given food, but he often won't go out of his way to get food.
When he does eat, he eats a lot. This boy is acclimated to high altitudes with cold air, one of the body's natural ways to acclimate to colder climates is to raise the body's metabolism, which would raise his body's need for energy.
The Chain's never seen Sky angry. Like really, legitimately angry. They've seen him irritated or miffed, but Sky's never lost it on anybody. Most people have never seen him lose it, even on Skyloft. But boy, when he does, you'd better pray it isn't directed at you.
Sky pipes up when needed and kind of stays to the periphery the rest of the time. He’s the quiet and strong and supportive glue of the group. He’s ok with that 90% of the time, but sometimes he feels invisible and lonely.
Sky was orphaned at a young age and then kind of collectively raised by all of Skyloft. Because of that he feels at home everywhere, but also kind of drifts from place to place. No permanent area or group of people have been home to him except for Sun. He can come across as strangely aloof to outsiders because he's just used to strolling into a random house, plopping down, and chilling. But he does care about everyone, he's just quiet about it.
Sky is a Type 9 enneagram (personality type), which means seeking peace and harmony is his biggest subconscious goal because he can innately sense when there isn't any. This translates to being a mediator in the group when there are arguments, but it can also translate internally to snuffing out anything that upsets him, leaving him in a bit of a mental daze because he refuses to acknowledge issues.
By heaven, though, when the issues do hit him, they hit like a freight train, and he has no clue how to handle them because he spends all his time not handling them. Usually someone else has to step in at that point to comfort him.
Speaking of comfort, Sky is a very physical person. His love language can be gentle and reassuring and understanding of boundaries if need be, but he loves cuddling and hugs and physical affection in general.
Sky is a straight A student. He strikes me as one of those kids who already is a daydreamer, but school is also just boring because he can study it and ace the test and move on without really learning anything. The only exceptions to this are flying and fighting - he remembers all his lessons for that. Commander Eagus even says that Link is a sharp student and is clearly one of his favorites.

What’s Sammy like in your AUs? (Personality, but appearance in particular,, had an idea floating in my brain about an animation meme)
Tumblr media
Saw this ask and I swear I have never speedrun a concept so fast- it must be partially from the art high I’m getting from the animatic. /j
Sammy infodumping below:
I’ve had a rough idea for their design for a while so I’ll try to sum this up as best I can. Sammy in my AUs (and headcanons for in game) was originally an explorer with Nurm. The duo would go and chart new territories, with Sammy being oriented on studying the fauna/flora of biomes and Nurm mapping. Eventually, the two run into Jack and Vos while on a treasure hunt and decide to help out. One successful treasure hunt later and all four become a group, going on adventures and mapping and such. After a few years, Nurm decides to go off and map new locations while the trio go off adventuring.
Sea Temple time oh boy: The trio stumble upon a prismarine gauntlet while spelunking and accidentally open the original “heckmouth.” (The gauntlet doesn’t have the curse of binding, but the heckmouth does pose a great threat.) Eager to find answers on how to close the dangerous pit, they visit the closest village: Mushroom Archipelago. Sammy, used to conversing with Nurm, translates for the group and they deduce that their best bet lies in a Sea Temple nearby. (Not going into too much detail here because I’m saving it for my fic.) Unfortunately things go awry upon entering the guardian room of the temple when Sammy is killed by the guardians and Vos locked away in the room’s traps.
—Petra reminds Jack a LOT of Sammy which is why he is so quick to open up to her and offer to take her on adventures.
—The potion in Sammy’s inventory at the time of her death was given to her by Vos (something to help defeat the elder guardians with like strength or speed.)
Personality:
—very similar to Petra (laid back, group mediator, etc)
—experienced archer and biologist (cartographer too after joining Jack and Vos)
—always carried a journal in her bag filled with sketches of biomes, plants, mobs, etc
—would have loved lush caves if she found one
Design Notes: (may be changed in final reference)
—bandages around hands help with climbing trees (usually to get to a vantage point for shooting)
—cape is very short and is often worn around neck or waist (also her diamond is in the center)
—every bit of me is holding back adding more plants to her apparel
—colors may be changed in her final design, but you’re absolutely free to use them nonetheless
—Hehe also as a little easter egg, for those of y’all who pay close attention to my drawings of Vos, you’ll know he carries leaves in his bag. Yes, that has always been a nod to my Sammy design. I may be slightly in denial that he’s dead, but he always plants to remind himself of her.
I cannot wait to see your animation meme omg. ^^ That sounds so freaking awesome—

Artemis and Apollo
Tumblr media
I was working on a post about my thoughts on the relationships between Jimin, Jungkook and Tae before the Tailor of Chaos made his appearance and wrecked my brain. I had a lot written and was trying to edit it down so it wouldn’t be a several-chapter-long study about each of those three’s personalities and why I think they do what they do. I’ll get back to it later maybe.
So I am putting that aside in order to delve into these concepts of Jimin’s. I have to admit, it is intimidating how he comes up with these ideas. I have a lot of thoughts about all this and I am trying to put some order to it but the key word in all of it truly is chaos. The more I see, the more I am in awe and the more confused I am trying to reconcile all the various versions of Jimin.
I am thinking about all the years we had cutie sexy lovely Jimin and Mochi and Chimmie. I am wondering in his WeLive last week when he mentioned that he did some self-reflecting on why he cut his hair short in April (if that translation is indeed accurate and that IS what he meant) if he cut his hair because it was a way to hang on to “youth” one last time?
Tumblr media
And then he drops these heavy ideas on us about id and ego... the inner tug of war between primitive impulses and morality and the rational and controlling mediator that supposedly prevents either from overpowering the other. A inner turmoil of push and pull...
His choice of white: purity, morality .... and black: pleasure, sensuality
And the images of the cracked statues put back together and sealed with gold. Imperfections that have now turned into something beautiful and precious holding it all together.
Posing with mannequins... living breathing Jimin and some plastic representation... the comparison between real Jimin and idol Jimin?
Tumblr media
I mentioned in a post or two ago that I wondered if the Tailor of Chaos concept is what summoned the Black Swan stage outfits with the lack of shirts and the body chains and yes, it was all being created in about the same timeframe. These photos were planned at the end of last year. The teaser video opens with Jimin wearing the same LV hoodie he was wearing for this VLive back on October 20, 2021. ABOUT A YEAR AGO!
The temporary tattoos: the words tailor of chaos and Artemis and when I flipped the image I see the word Filter. We are seeing Jimin revisiting Filter. Who is Artemis? In Greek mythology, Artemis is goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, nature, vegetation, childbirth, care of children, and chastity. Artemis is also associated with the moon. In the myth of Actaeon, when this young hunter sees her bathing naked, he is transformed into a deer by the angered goddess, and is then devoured by his own hunting dogs who do not recognize their own master. THAT is truly conceptual...and is then devoured by his own dogs that don’t recognize their own master.... all kinds of imagery there that can be compared to life as an idol and especially as a member of BTS. Their own industry (dogs) devour them because they don’t recognize them as the one (master) who is bringing them more success than ever...
Artemis has a twin brother named Apollo. Apollo is the god of music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and diseases, and is associated with the Sun and light, poetry, and more!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
Other aspects of Artemis: In spite of her status as a virgin who avoided potential lovers, there are multiple references to Artemis' beauty and eroticism.
Tumblr media
The stag imagery:
Tumblr media
Artemis with her hunting bow drawn and birds and stars:
Tumblr media
Jimin says “the original” Jimin... Is he speaking about the evolution of his idol persona? or the real Jimin? because idol Jimin began as manly man Jimin and then idol Jimin became softer and softer and then androgyny (Artemis is female) really entered the chat at some point and has been intermingling with cute bread cheeks Jimin, roundy boba head Jimin, chapter 2 Jimin, etc. Pick your damn Filter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Has Jimin been toying with this Artemis concept for a long time now? Maybe we will find out when we see more about his photo folio.
I am more or less rambling and I really am not well versed on Greek mythology except for what I have researched to talk about this. But I do understand the concepts of psychology that he’s tossing around in these images and I do love how he exposes some of his own personal psyche in his presentation of himself. I flipped these photos around that he was looking at on the table:
Tumblr media
Jungkook remarked that he thought out of all the members’ photo folio concepts, his vampire concept was really way out there, but my baby, Jimin’s concept is so out there, it will soar over the intelligence and maturity level of so many and just be pretty pictures to them. Jimin is CHALLENGING OUR INTELLECT with these images and that is a very very unique and sexy concept coming from him.

Being a linguist in DS9 must be the dream job for linguists in Starfleet, in other domains of the Federation and outside of the Federation.
Universities all around probably are looking to establish a Linguistic and Cultural Exchange and Study Center in DS9 with long-term missions there to work on databases and improving interplanetary cultural backgrounds.
There are linguists from many planets working in AI so that the computer can deduce how languages that we've never encountered work. There are linguists working in a more traditional way on specialized glossaries, asking people around, recording sounds, writing things down, asking for books, newspapers, children's letters... There are translators asking people to turn off their translator so that they can practice the language with natives, turning it on again to see how the computer translated the same sentence, making notes on it, improving it later. One of them is really passionate about Ferengi culture and put some extra attention in translating Ferengi children's books which is why we got "Acquire, Brak! Acquire!" to sound like that in English, keeping the alliteration.
There are cultural mediators writing manuals for Starfleet command, for ambassadors, travelers and captain frighters so that they know what to take into account when dealing with people from x planet or y planet or how to deduce what people from an unknown planet want, how to manage a first contact situation. They are all very frustrated because half the time nobody reads them or listens to them.
All of them spend their days trying to get Sisko to agree to take them on a mission to a far away planet so that they can gather data in the planet, in the natural context, but it's always too dangerous so they're stuck with the random traveler who stops at Quark's. They ask the other team members to please carry a recorder and record conversations so that they can analyse them later without the translator's influence. Many of them end up carrying their missions with freighters, runabouts and other non-Starfleet ships.
Some of them tried to offer services as forensic linguists when the threat of the Dominion started to spread so that they could analyse someone's speech and look for alterations, things they wouldn't say or other differences and spot impersonators but Starfleet thought it was slow and risky because what if they were mistaken?
They really love going to the Klingon restaurant because the owner is always happy to help, telling them Klingon idioms, jokes, insults, traditions and correcting their Klingon. Unexpectedly, Morn is also a good contact, he may drink a bit too much and sometimes he speaks and speaks in his monotone voice but he gladly lets them record his speech, writes things for them and brings them reading material.
Quark doesn't want to participate because where is the profit but Rom does, also because he needs translations of engineering and mechanic terminology into Ferengi, the database for Bajoran-Ferengi in this domain is not good enough and half the time they have to use some Starfleet official language as relay.
Garak is also readily available but trying to make sense of Cardassian culture from him is an impossible task. They do have a large database of fabric-related vocabulary in Cardassian. He refuses to acknowledge that he knows about weapons, army or other non-tailor related jobs. He sometimes accepts to tell them about plants, as he was a gardener once. They also have a great glossary of idioms and turns of phrases thanks to Garak.
They keep trying to figure out what is the changelings language when they are not in solid form, but they only have Odo for tests and he has had his share of tests so he only answers a couple of questions at a time before he is very busy. He never accepts to take tests to figure out language in liquid form.
Obviously, the database that is growing the fastest and with the best examples is Bajoran, to and from so many languages. They have samples of all ages and parts of society, they have access to books, music and videos of all sorts. More than one linguist from more than one planet has become the expert of Bajoran cutlure, translation from and to Bajoran, Bajoran religious expressions, etc.

Researchers Elucidated the Dynamic RNA Structurome and its Potential in Targeted Therapeutics
Tumblr media
With a thorough potential of the Ribonucleic Acids (RNA) in cellular processes, the molecule is deemed more than just being transitionary and has emerged as a master regulator of cellular processes. The regulatory functions to code proteins and untranslated regions in mRNA significantly contribute towards post-translational modifications. The study presents biological insights into understanding the RNA ensemble and its potential using next-generation sequencing technology.
The RNA structurome identifies itself as a stable entity enabling researchers to dive deep into the intricate networking of alternate intramolecular and intermolecular interactions. Being the master regulators and existing with expanded repertoires such as microRNAs and snRNAs can mediate the functions such as gene expression, transcription, and post-transcriptional modifications. Hence, they deem it important to elucidate the function mechanism. The reviewers have described the latest advancements in NGS technology to determine the RNA structure based on large-scale transcriptomics in biological cells.

it hides in the light by Dion Smith-Dokkie
The Bows, April 5th - June 22nd, 2024
it hides in the light presents a new body of experimental mixed-media works by artist Dion Smith-Dokkie that attend to embodiment, interface, information, and infrastructure.
Inkjet-printed stills taken from video works, satellite images of bodies of water, images of daily life, and select found images are broken down into ‘particles’. Using water, the particles are transferred onto paper, creating a collage. In this process, the images are liquefied and lose their discernibility: they synthesize and coalesce. The resulting compositions are further developed with watercolor, gouache, and ink.
The result is an indistinct, luminous work that straddles the line between non-representation and concrete location, videographic and painterly modes. The formal and conceptual tools utilized—mediation and translation via contact, transfer, diffusion, and mutation—become tactics of deliberately sensual and nebulous erotic self-representation. They extrapolate a diffused and empathic praxis of embodiment, self-location, and co-relation.
Dion Smith-Dokkie (he, they) resides uninvited on Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh homelands and territories. He was born in Fort St. John and grew up in the Peace River region of northeast BC and northwest Alberta. Dion locates themselves as a gay, mixed-race European-Indigenous man who lives with mental illness. He is a member of West Moberly First Nations, a Treaty 8 First Nation. They hold a BA in Women’s Studies from the University of Victoria (2015), a BFA in Painting and Drawing from Concordia University (2019), and an MFA in Visual Arts from the University of British Columbia (2021).

"Book One: A Nice Little Family" Thoughts (Brothers Karamazov)
I think having that title for this particular book is quite fitting as the entirety of it pertains to setting up the main family of the story. In regards to the actual story telling, this is strikingly different from the other two works I have read by Dostoevsky, White Nights and Crime and Punishment. Those are similar to one another, whereas Brothers Karamazov stands out; not just because of its popularity, but what makes it popular—that is something that I not only will focus on, but have to focus on when reading. Family as a motif being relayed and explained through Dostoevesky’s compelling narrative in the Brothers K is immediately, in my mind, going to leave an impression upon me. Although it has taken almost a month for me to sit down and finish the first book, I have another feeling that it will be easier to read from this point onwards.
Now, as for the actual story of Book One, there are some things that struck me as things that could contribute to the overall tale. But before I get into that, I want to say that the first couple of chapters are quite funny. This might have something to do with something mentioned in the translator’s note (Peaver and Volokhonsky translation, Bicentennial edition). Which is that their aim was to capture Dostoevsky’s original bleak comedy of the Brothers K. And immediately that goal came true. I had to take a moment to contain myself as I was in a library, when I was ready about Fyodor’s outrageous life and personality.
That was really the only moment in the whole book that I laughed, though, because I ended up moving on to focus on the establishment of the brothers and their lives. The two that struck me the most are Dmitri and Alyosha. The former for his difficult life and aloof disposition, the latter for his contrast between his older brothers. Alyosha’s innocence or his youthful approach to life is something I can relate to. I can also really find myself understanding Dmitri as a person and the difficult relationship he has with Fyodor. With that in mind, I can see how Ivan would fit in nicely between them. He is definitely a character that my sister (the middle between me and our younger brother) would like.
Not only are the characters and writing style interesting, yet echo Dostoevsky’s style that I am more familiar with, the combination of the two is a wonderful one, and I’ve enjoyed reading despite my slow pace. By having the story be told by—as far as I know—a local clergyman, that is a refreshing format than just third person narration. It adds ahe book where stage directions or other things were added to be a subtle nod to theatre in that book. But with Brothers K, it honestly feels not only cinematic, but actually Homeric. Me saying that could be a bias because that is a literary style that I am intimately familiar with as I have studied it in great detail. But the way that theatrical element that makes Dostoevsky’s work here much more cinematic than theatrical, which is something that I can attribute to Crime and Punishment. There were several instances in t the elder might be somehow influential and conciliatory.”
“Fyodor Pavlovich was apparently the first to suggest, apparently as a joke, that they all get together in the elder Zosima’s cell, and, without resorting to his direct mediation, still come to some decent agreement, since the dignity and personality of the elder might be somehow influential and conciliatory.”
To me, that echoes the gathering of followers and friends at Plato’s cell when he delivered his final few dialogues. I might be stretching, but even if it was intended, such a reference is rather cool and works well in the story and the Greek reference previously mentioned. There are some other things I highlighted regarding character details, fundamental things, that I feel might come up later. If they do, I will most certainly reference them. But for now, I am going to continue reading with Book Two, An Inappropriate Gathering!

Pope Francis said atheists are covered by the blood of Jesus without faith. Pope Francis said all religions lead to God and should be embraced. He said non-Christians are children of God. He said God made some people gay. Pope Francis said Jesus' life and the cross ended in failure. Pope Francis said Jesus is not a spirit, but a glorified man. Pope Francis said it's absurd to think that anyone can have a personal direct relationship with Jesus Christ. Pope Francis said that Mary is the road we must travel to reach God. These are all lies from Satan. Pope Francis is possibly the False Prophet from the book of Revelation. If so, he will usher in the Antichrist from Revelation 13. Nobody in the Bible prayed to Mary. Purgatory is unbiblical. Watch the video Pope Francis and His Lies: False Prophet exposed on YouTube. Also watch Are Catholics Saved on the Reformed Christian Teaching channel on YouTube. Watch the Messiah 2030 YouTube channel for proof that 53 Bible prophecies point to 2030, which is also the year of the Great Reset. Friends should draw you closer to holiness and Jesus Christ. If they pull you towards sin more than holiness then you should walk away. Obey Jesus Christ over everyone. Get the gotquestions app and a Bible app that reads to you like You Version. Put the New Testament on repeat. Get a study Bible. I used to go to Catholic Church until I studied the Bible. I found out that nobody prayed to Mary, she was a sinner, she wasn't called holy or the Queen of Heaven, she didn't die a virgin, purgatory & lent are unbiblical, Popes sin too, we can confess our sins directly to God, we should only call God in Heaven Father, Jesus built His church on what Peter said about Jesus and not on Peter, scripture says Jesus Christ is the Rock not Peter, all Christians are saints because of Jesus, angels aren't saints, we're only supposed to pray to God, not Mary, since she isn't a comediatrix, Jesus is the only mediator between God & men, Christians are the church. Ecclesiastes 9:5 says the dead know nothing, so Mary can't hear us. I realized that Martin Luther was correct for starting the Protestant reformation. Also, The movie Spotlight is based on a true story regarding the Catholic Church.
For more information go here: www.gotquestions.org/catholicism.html & See Pope Francis and His Lies: The False Prophet Exposed, on YouTube. Also, watch Are Catholics Saved on the Reformed Christian Teaching channel on YouTube. Messiah 2030, on YouTube shows how 53 Bible prophecies point to 2030. The Antichrist & rapture are close. According to the Holy Bible Christians are saints & the church. The Roman Catholic Church (RCC) made people believe lies like purgatory & Popes & Mary being sinless. Then Martin Luther who was a devout Catholic monk that translated the Bible saw 95 major lies from the Vatican like people paying the RCC to get into Heaven. He told everyone. People realized the truth & started translating the Bible into English for every person to read for themselves. The Popes had many murdered for translating the Bible. Thank God the Bible got translated into other languages. It allowed people around the world to leave the lies of the Roman Catholic Church & start the Protestant reformation. He exposed lies like the Pope speaks for Jesus & doesn't sin, & only Catholics go to Heaven. Popes caused the crusades even though Jesus said that the meek shall inherit the Earth not the violent or murderers. Nobody in the Bible said to pray to another Christian. The RCC did that. It's unbiblical & against the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The CFP is up for this year's Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA) conference! As your Fantasy & the Fantastic Area Chair, I encourage you to send proposals my way, if you've got something dealing with any aspect of, well, fantasy and the fantastic! Happy to consider proposals from independent scholars or creative folks, as well. Please ask me if you've got any questions!
We will be in sunny Palm Springs this year, in November, so come visit Southern California and hang out with us! (There are many other lovely sessions too - from Disney to Food Studies to Medieval Literature - though I will of course encourage you to submit to the Fantasy area! :D )
I'll copy my specific CFP below, and the link to my session - deadline for proposals is April 30!
Fantasy & the Fantastic
Fantasy and the supernatural, broadly defined, shape many popular narratives and universes—from Lord of the Rings to Game of Thrones, from World of Warcraft to The Witcher, from classical and medieval tales of monsters and dragons to the worlds of N.K. Jemisin, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, and Ursula K. Le Guin. As a genre, fantasy engages with questions of rhetoric, identity, and power in multiple ways, across media, subgenres, and cultural traditions; the enchantment of fantastic and supernatural narratives casts a persistent and global spell. For this standing session, all proposals that explore fantasy's evolutions and impacts, the fantastic and the supernatural, and/or intersections of fantasy and diverse genres, media, traditions, or time periods are invited.
Proposals which intersect with the PAMLA conference theme of “Translation in Action” are welcome, particularly those which consider related questions of translation, mediation, interpretation, power and subversion, challenges and impossibilities and discoveries, histories and practice and representation of translation, language-learning and world-construction, and cosmopolitanism. Direct link to Fantasy area here!
General PAMLA CFP here!

The Redfox Girls
Identical twins and the middle children of the family
They have an older and a younger brother (I'll flush them out eventually)
They learned their magic from their mama and bonded over it
they were levys little shadows when they were very small
Odessa - 22
Takes large influences from goth and punk ideals and fashion
very patient and quiet but still extroverted and social
has, does, and specializes in face pircings
she's certified now, but she very much wasn't when she did a lot of them for her friends
she works as a piercer at a tattoo shop by commission
shes has a huge interest in languages and is fluent in 5. 1 of them being considered a dead language. Shes semi fluent in 3 others and is studying several more
she helps translate and localise texts and media in her free time and makes a lot of passive money off of it
started out being an unofficial sub translator for anime when she was like 12 and now people hire her to do it
she does a lot of very old text translation for the magic councils library and Fiore University
She got her undergrad in linguistics and is getting a masters in historical linguistics at Fiore Uni (online courses coming in clutch)
is a solid script wizard but doesn't just stick to english.
I like to think that different languages change how a script functions, sometimes even if it's "technically" the same word.
is appart of Maree's team and is mainly the mediator of the group when things get out of hand
Salem - 22
Takes influence from "preppy" or "soft academia" aesthetics
she picked up a valley girl esc accent from her time studying abroad and refuses to lose it
it drives her dad CRAZY
I think she'd be going to law school at Fiore Uni for magic law, but studied abroad for an English and journalism degree
she looked up to her auntie lucy as a kid, and it shows
doesnt do much magic anymore, but she will take a job here and there with Odessa if she needs backup or money (law school doesnt pay for itself)
she's also a solid script mage :) (shocker) but is kinda rusty
has a shit ton of properly healed ear pircings and brags about it (i would too honestly)
has pierced and will pierce again
same as her sister in piercing others before being certified, but she only does ears. she also works in the same shop for some quick cash when she needs it
she did one of Nashis nostrils when she was like 15 and she got a booger on her. it grossed her out, and she now refuses to do face stuff because of it
has a short temper but learned to control it very well in a professional setting.
not in a personal one, tho. can and will throw hands at any time
has a very bold personality

Alright finally writing our previous DnD session !
All previous parts:
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Yilcer | Part 5 |
The party has been shopping around, budgeting their treasures. They also came to an argument with Yilcer about whether her Archdruid Helvega is the same as the Sigurd Helvega they faced ages ago.
This particular session was very lore-heavy. I was worried they'd get bored, but pleasantly surprised by how immersed they were and how much they enjoyed piecing together bits of lore they each had, so I hope I can translate that well enough to text here.
Yilcer refuses to believe her Archdruid is the same Helvega as the necromancer they met, but it's mostly due to Ivan's petty one-sided feud with him: Ivan insists he's a bad guy because Sigurd let him drink his blood knowing it was tainted because he's "always wondered what would happen."
Tork had to mediate between them.
In the mean time, Xehara went back to one of the shop keeps, Zephyn, a Tiefling who has half his face seared to the bone, a seasoned adventurer who has definitely seen a lot. He asks Zephyn about his necklace, since Zephyn's wares are mostly jewelries. Zephyn personally isn't sure but suggests if it's magic and can't be taken off, he should ask a wizard or sorcerer.
The group gets back together and goes to Glamours and Gores, a magic and magic items shop run by a half-elf wizard named Dravor, dressed in midnight-black robes with subtle hints of gold threads, wearing gold pauldrons and chains.
Dravor sells them a few items, including some scrolls (Fireball, Speak With Dead, Grease, Disguise Self).
Dravor looks through a few of his tomes and tells Zehara the necklace is certainly of Ancient time, but can tell little beyond that. There is an enchantment attached to it, but he wouldn't necessarily call it a curse as much as he would call it soulbound. He did not detect any outright cursed or dark magic on the necklace, but it seems that its refusal to be removed is part of its duty, and that Xehara would have to be the one to find out what that is.
Yilcer wanted to open up a bank account since the ancient coins they have cost a fuckton of gold for just one. The Three Lizard Bank recognized her surname, Helvega, and asked if she was related. She at first didn't want to say, but passed a persuasion check after backtracking. They gave her a vault key to a Helvega vault. She at first refused to let anyone else go with her, wanting to discover the secrets of her Archdruid herself.
The vault was massive, but had very little actually inside.
Five portraits were stacked against the wall. She didn't recognize any except one: her Archdruid wearing a teal, armored robe holding a book, a quill, wearing a silver ring with a purple stone. But, what was unusual, is that his eyes were normal. White sclera, dark black irises.
There were stacks and stacks of letters neatly arranged, and several books. They were all in a language she didn't know, however, ad she cursed at herself, realizing the others were studying this language. She found a safety deposit box and opened it. Inside were:
A broken pearl necklace, a large amethyst flower, a large peridot flower, an opened letter with the wax seal preserved of an axe and a lavender stalk crossing but in a language she didn't know, two silver rings with an amethyst and a peridot respectively (that she recognized one as in the portrait) with engraved phrases in another language, four small black obelisks, and a pitch black dagger coated in rust or old blood.
She went back and very frustratedly demanded the others go with her.
They had ONE scroll of Comprehend Languages and had to choose which of the items they were going to read. I gave them the choice of:
A stack of old letters. A stack of new letters. A stack of ancient books.
Either way I was going to give them the safety deposit box letter and rings for free since they're quick reads.
Everyone examined all the items in the room.
The group recognized the portraits as the indiiduals from the Godkiller temple as well as portraits hanging in Sigurd's office at the Elk God's temple: Eloise Starguard, Asa Heilung, Razvra Zhiat, and finally a portrait of Sigurd himself. However, the fifth was recognized but unexpected: A heroic portrait of a middle-aged man with chopped brown hair and scruffy beard. He is Xehara's target.
Everyone mulled over these portraits.
Xehara and Tork looked at the two stacks of books. One of them was a stack of language books in many languages. They recognized Sigurd's handwriting in various notes, as it seemed he was learning all these languages himself. The second stack of books were neat and they passed a check to determined they were preserved by the same magic that had been preserving Razvra's body (and now-decapitated head....)
Tork and Xehara passed a Wisdom check so I allowed them to understand the subject of the books but not fully translate them. They were five books about the Usherian Pantheon, seemingly each about a god, but couldn't decipher what the fifth book as about.
Yilcer is the one who used the Comprehend Language scroll and chose to translate the older stack of letters.
Here's a copy paste of my notes:
Sigurd details that there is a sickness disturbing the local flora and fauna in a way that seems unnatural or supernatural. He asks permissions to travel to the temples, as the Divination Chambers seem to be having difficulties connecting to the gods. It’s a strange, otherworldly thing he’s never seen before. But, like any illness, Sigurd insists he can take it.
Asa seems to be the first of his companions, as he sends a letter to the central Ushurian temple, the Temple of the Quartet, detailing her aid in soothing frenzied creatures that have come to illness. The Temple of the Quartet seems to be located near Fjorsom and Brislat. Asa is apparently a warrior nun dedicated in Ranger arts. She and Sigurd travel to Draghule together and find the dragon god suffers the illness. He details the symptoms:
It is of ragged breath, drooling from its mouth with a wretched stench of death. It is rather unable to move and appears to have a bloat. He and Asa, as skilled healers each and Asa of great animal-clinictic study do what they can to aid the Great Dragon, but little seems to help it. Sigurd informs the Temple of the Quartet he will attempt his Final Measure, and perhaps self-study its signs and symptoms. They reply to him with prayers for his own health, and thank him for his sacrifice.
He details that after curing the illness, he and Asa were blessed by the visage of Galdramadur Himself, in draco-humanoid glory, thanking him for his service and sacrifice. The god seems to be doing much better, and even said that the mortal coils of the great beast God-Avatars can occasionally suffer mortal-inflictions. Sigurd, however, tells the Temple he does not find this illness to be very…. Mortal.
Sigurd has hired a band of mercenaries to travel with him and fellow priests, to protect them from the troubles that would meet them traveling from Osanisk to the southeastern shores to travel to Aeonaclys.
Letters are addressed to his mother. He has a few letters from his mother praying for his safety. A few of the letters describe the band of mercenaries, a barbarian, a fighter, a pair of wizards, two paladins briefly, small things about their origins and personalities. A few funny things, such as Asa scolding them for brutishness towards animals and plants. He details one particular paladin longer than the others – the description is certainly Razvra.
He keeps in touch with his mother. His mother calls him Siggy.
In Aeonaclys, he mentions to a nun that an Angel barred them from entering Morthana’s temple at first. He reveals it was because Morthana’s avatar had been sick, as well, but eventually allowed him upon realizing he healed both Galdramadur, Desmaduke, and Ranmaya. Morthana herself soothed him a most dreadful tale. He does not write this tale, only insists that when he returns, it would cause a dire stir amongst the worshipers and can only be told in person.
Aloise, an Angel, joins him as she feels it is her duty to do so.
He tells his mother about small things. He tells her he thinks Razvra would enjoy their farm because he enjoys gardening, and hopes to show him someday. He said Razvra also likes horses, and tells her they should get one or two. Razvra’s horse is named Tabernackle. He includes a drawing of Razvra combing its hair.
He finished cleansing each God-Avatar.
He is asked a few times by clinicians and worshipers about his health. He insists it’s simply taking time for his own body to heal such an alien illness. He assures them he will be fine. It’s no different from healing a flue or a leper.
Most of the letters thereafter are between Sigurd and The Three (Razvra, Eloise, Asa), detailing small everyday things of their lives, keeping in touch for years. There seems to be a lot of peace now. Razvra and he live in a place called Alma, on their own farm. Sigurd’s mother had passed and he was given well-wishes – there are flowers pressed between these letters.
Asa has children in the Brislat grove. Eloise jokingly complains of the never-ending petty mortal sufferings she hears as a Guardian in Aeonaclys. Eloise and Asa both ask him about his health. He says it’s hard to keep it contained, but his body can manage it. It’s the least he can do for faith.
More time passes but new letters to them state Razvra is going with him “like old times” to visit the temples and god-avatars to cleanse the Godsickness again. Eloise and Asa both tell him to be careful, reminding him that his body is still recovering from last time. He cleanses them all again. Years pass.
New letters state his worry that the sickness is returning at exponential rate. He cleanses the gods, but they only get sick again. Eloise and Asa offer to help him, they’re own clerical abilities they believe could combine with his. He refuses, saying he doesn’t want to put his beloved companions in any danger.
Months pass.
He writes to them he fears the god-avatars are beyond saving, or will be soon, but the priests refuse to believe him.
Asa and Eloise insist he must make them see truth, that the avatars are still bound to mortal coil.
Sigurd tells them the priests are afraid the gods would cease if their avatars cease. Sigurd insists that the gods use the avatars to deal with mortal complications but otherwise would be powerful enough to resume new coils. They are GODS. The primordial essence of all life. They would not “cease”
They each agree to search for new Great Beasts that can withstand the power of the gods.
Months go by between letters, some are from Sigurd to priests, priests being upset with his line of thinking, finding him blasphemous to think anything could contain the Godsouls. Sigurd insists that avatars need not necessarily be Beasts, but any powerful being willing and capable of becoming the mouthpiece for a god would do.
Many letters are collected, addressed to Sigurd, from many priests, priestesses, nuns, monks, nobility, commoner, renouncing him as a Blasphemer. He has been stripped of his title as Ascendant Priest.
Sigurd vaguely mourns in a letter he has blood of his brothers on his hands for the foolishness of blindness. And soon, the blood of his greatest devotion will be on his hands, too.
The rest of the letters are only from Asa and Eloise, frequently writing to him, asking for his reply, asking for Razvra’s reply, asking Razvra to keep Sigurd safe. They resort to begging for an answer before the letters stop. Sigurd had one, seemingly unsent reply: I can fix it.
In between the letters are various illustrations (that I did not draw lol)
Some drawings of Razvra, Asa, and Eloise, mostly doing mundane things: Razvra brushing his horse's hair, Asa gholding her hand out to a small animal, Eloise hanging laundry on makeshift posts, some various figure drawings of various monks, nuns, priests, and priestesses, a few drawings of buildings, a few of the interior of the Forge Temple but with people, a few of the Elk temple but with people, a few of an oceanic temple, a few of a stone temple, a blood stained drawing of the goblet.
Ivan stealthed and took the drawing of the goblet (as a reminder, his people were said to be created by the magic of a goblet, and some time go he found and took the very goblet out of the Godkiller temple, but has very little knowledge of its true purpose otherwise)
The group told Yilcer they've been to two of the sketched temples and described vaguely what the found there, but told her little else.
I also let them read the rings and deposit letter.
The letter read:
Happiness, many believe, is the enchanted palaces we read of in our childhood, where fierce, fiery dragons defend the entrance and approach; and monsters of all shapes and kinds, requiring to be overcome ere victory is ours. But I know this work, and I know this life. I know the fear that punctuates the depths of the gut, the heartbeat of finality when you believe you are on death’s final knell. But I too know happiness. The mending of the soul that comes after gore, the soothing of gash wounds by the palest, most charming light, the tenderness of a kiss to the smallest scrape. I will always the sword-arm to he who is forever my healer, the mend of my heart – Sigard Vega
Ring with a dark purple stone says: Until Nothing Remains
Ring with a dark green stone says: Except for Our Regrets
Knowing Razvra and Sigurd had been married, they determined these were their wedding rings, vows, and gifts. They asked to see my illustrations again and everyone said how sad it was realizing the rings and flowers were in their respective color palettes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They determined everything in the deposit box was particularly special, and almost ritualistic. They determined (without my confirmation but they are correct) that the four obelisks were likely tied to the fact there were originally Four Champions (Sigurd, Razvra, Asa, Eloise). The dagger, they determined, was likely what Sigurd used to kill Razvra, a very stark contrast to the beauty of most everything else in the box, and an almost sickly keepsake to remind him of what he had done.
I also gave Yilcer a particular piece of information that she shared with the group:
All names come from languages, and while she can read that Sigard Vega is a name, she can, at this moment, understand its translation and roots. Sigard means "Victorious Guardian" and "Vega" means way. I also told her, you realize that the name Helvega means "The Way to Hell"
Ivan speculated very correctly that the reason why the Godkiller is symbolized by a dead horse is because it's a bastardization, a symbol of what Sigurd had lost and thus changed his name to "The Way to Hell" showcasing his own descent of mourning to madness.
Ivan also had a very correct speculation, but I hadn't confirmed it yet, that when Sigurd said the God-Avatars needn't be beasts, he asked Tahir about the Revenant Ritual. Tahir's brother is a Revenant, which in my game means he is a body possessed by another soul. Tahir said that when he saw his brother, he had been stabbed through the heart and wrists to bleed and die so that his body could make room for another soul. Ivan compared this to the ritual they vaguely came across in the second or third session, cultists who did the same in the name of the Godkiller.
Yilcer offered information at this point:
She had asked her Archdruid before the adventure if he had ever seen this blight before. He said yes, once a long time ago, long before she was born. She asked what it was and he said it was something unnatural, or perhaps supernatural, but otherwise did not know. She asked what he did to stop it before, he told her he did "something terrible." She asked if he would have to do it again, and he simply said "I hope not."
Tork put 2 and 2 together: They found Razvra's body in the temple of the Dragon God. They found the Elk-God's body in the Godkiller's temple and an empty temple of the Elk God. There are two more champions, and two more temples. One of the champions is a guardian of the Raven goddess Morthana.
They looked at the portraits again. The one of the mystery man, Illark, had a broken frame. An Investigation check proved that it was likely thrown or otherwise smashed in frustration, but they found it strange it was still preserved with these others if Sigurd had been the one to throw it.
They also noticed, but no one seemed to pick up on my hint yet: Asa, the elf woman, had red hair and tawny skin. Yilcer passed a check and determined she was an Eldarin like herself (who is also from Brislat if you remember / read Yilcer's backstory).
:)
They flitted back and forth between whether they wanted to sell Sigurd's stuff or not. Yilcer very much did not want to, but they all decided his story was already too fucking sad AND they decapitated his dead husband - "We have to leave him something!" Tork said.
They took the stack of newer letters as well as all the books, but left the portraits and deposit box.
They asked the bank teller how old the vault was. She looked through records and found it was actually the very first account the bank ever opened and sadly did not have any official dated records from back then, but its several hundred years old. They asked when the last time someone came an she told them about a hundred years or so (which is about when Sigurd met/adopted Yilcer but no one noticed that yet).
They bought a few more things in town now that they remembere why they went to the bank to begin with: Yilcer has an account now and exchanged an Ancient coin for gold to finish their shopping spree.
After Tahir got the Distinguished Outfit from all over the shops, he decided to flirt with Dravor as a distraction. Dravor rolled a nat 1 so he was very much enamored by our dog furry in thigh highs while Xehara stole the remaining 4 speak with dead scrolls and four comprehend language scrolls. Everyone was trying to get him to steal more than that but he refused. Dravor, being a nervous wreck while Tahir continued to flirt with him, gave Tahir a special potion of healing that does 10d6 + 10 healing. Tahir kissed him as thanks and the poor man nearly passed out.
I REALLY need to draw Dravor because he's like. A tall foreboding goth wizard with long dark beard who was reduced to blabber. I told them it was like when Kiff in Futurama gets nervous and just can't say anything.
I might make a list of the things they bought if anyone is interested, A few items I ripped from BG3 but a few I made up for their particular individual needs. I'll have to ask my note-taking player what they got, though, thank the gods he's been helping me keep track.
Ivan thought about his vampire clan has a triumvirate of gods. An Angel of the Moon named Mani, A Demon of the Sun named Kuukul, and a Necromantic Sorcerer named Erste. After seeing Eloise being called Manaven in another language at a previous temple, he determined that Eloise is likely the Moon Goddess he and his people worship. His people have a temple carved into the mountain that is said to hold the corpses of their gods, but no one except the absolute elite are allowed to go there. He realizes Eloise's body may be there, but has no idea who Kuukul or Erste may be.
Before we wrapped up I gave them a summary of important locations:
The scrolls Sigurd gave to Amin (Tahir's brother) to give to Xehara has portraits of Illark and one is the seal of Stillas, a beautiful city-state of commerce and wealth. It is possible Illark could be there. It's about a 3 week journey.
Much further to the west is Brislat and Fjorsom, and thus where the Temple of the Quartet is.
To the east they may find the origins of a peculiar necklace they found in Sigartha.
To the Northwest is Osanisk, an oceanic country and home to the Temple of the Angler Goddess.
To the far east or they could Osanisk are docking points where they will have to take a boat to Aeonaclys, Ivan's home, and thus where Eloise might be (and thus putting Asa in Osanisk).
They seem to prefer to head towards Stillas, so we'll find out next week.
If you all need it, here's are the Maps:
Cities Map | Countries Map
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They are currently in between the desert mountains in a valley called the Caravan Carnival in Dauthas, also called Paripahari (not labeled, sorry), it is a long river that connects the oceans and cuts through Stillas where a great many caravans convene together, a Silk Road of sorts.

Dearest mimi I have a question about himiraku that I think you may have already posted about . what languages do the four of them speak and what’s their main language of communication, I assumed it was Japanese but it occurred to me that some of them might have other languages in common? If so do they converse in those languages
HIIIII im so glad you asked this bc i extensively thought about it in the recent days. Here is the basic rundown of their language proficiencies:
AKITO: native Croatian speaker, fluent in English. His accent is on the thick side and he makes occasional mistakes (mainly struggles with when you need to say "the ___" and when you need to say "a ___" and when you don't need to say anything - this is the most common struggle of Croatians speaking ENG) but he has very good understanding of it and is able to express himself fluently. His Japanese though is very scarce. He tried teaching himself but since he had zero guidance other than the internet (and not much conviction) he went to Japan barely able to patch together several rough introductory sentences. Let's say he can somewhat get by as a tourist. This is OK because the Troupe is an international business and all staff as well as most members will be able to converse in English to a degree. He is the reason Himiraku primarily use English.
JUNPEI: Native Japanese speaker. He grew up alongside Englishmen like Seiya did but he didn't have much interest in the language so he did not actively force himself to study it or read books in it. He picked up enough during his childhood as well as his Troupe years to be able to make conversation, but I imagine he would struggle to express more complex concepts. This opposite situation makes communication about specific topics between him and Akito difficult, and Hikaru sometimes needs to act as a translator between them. Its not to a degree where he needs to mediate every few seconds but I imagine Junpei would occasionally ask Hikaru to TL a specific word he's thinking of to English, or to explain metaphorical phrases that don't make sense in JPN.
HIKARU: He grew up billingual from the start, speaking in English with his mother and in a mix of English and Japanese with his father who wanted him to stay in touch with the paternal side of the family (though that didn't happen.) Hazel wanted her son to be well educated so she encouraged this even if she disliked the laizzes faire way Noel coparented Hikaru. When Hazel and Hikaru moved to Japan, Hikaru was able to speak and read at the same level as children *slightly* younger than him, so he was put into a grade below his age group. While this was a good academic decision, it may have widened the gap between him and his peers. Hikaru only graduated high school a year before the main story bc of this. But yeah he is very well spoken in both languages and tends to use literary language that sometimes evades Akito and Junpei. I imagine he can also stutter through some Italian (there is Italian in music theory which is his special interest so he probably looked up further reading)
Arisu is a native JPN speaker. She went to a Catholic mission school where she learned decent English, and I'd say with the degree of foreign media she consumes she is almost as fluent as Hikaru (though she does not express herself as flowery - she is a little more shy in ENG than she is in JPN which is part of the reason whyit took a while for her to open up to Akito.) She also took seven years of German (could probably pass some proficiency exams but I don't think she'd venture into a full blown convo with a German) and three years of Latin (she still remembers some declensions but if you asked her to say something in Latin she would stare blankly before saying something like "una birundo non facit ver" or some other dicta et sententia that students learn without understanding the sentence structure LOL.
So when you bring it together, the 4 of them can only communicate in English, but Junpei Hikaru and Arisu fall into conversation in JPN ariund Akito a LOT so he ends up kind of sidelined 😅 he will bother Hikaru until he translates for him tho. So yeah Himiraku ENG, Himiraku - Akito JPN. Notably though, Hikaru and Arisu will seamlessly mix in English words and phrases into the conversations where it's just the two of them together a lot more than others do, because they use ENG enough that a sentiment sometimes naturally forms itself in English in their heads and they don't bother too much to translate it. Also, Hikaru learned to sing one Croatian song from Akito called "I am a Dalmatian" (Dalmatia is the region of CRO where Akito lived not the dog breed) & he can very nearly perfectly pronounce the lyrics (because Croatian consonants sound the same way Japanese do, and wovels sound similarly to the way English does - I think a billingual JPN+ENG person would speak Croatian a lot more easily than one who can solely speak either language :)!) In the extra chapter where Hikaru and Arisu visit Croatia, Hikaru spreads joy among the locals by singing Dalmatinac sam.

Reading This Week 2024 #4
working on catching up on reading since i was sick the week before! i think I'm gonna be using a new color for skimmed reading, so i don't mislead you into thinking I fully read more than I did. right now that color is blue
Finished:
Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli
just housekeeping since I already shared my thoughts in the last post, read for the global novel
Started and Finished:
"The Pocahontas Perplex: The Image of Indian Women in American Culture" by Rayna Green
"Indian Women as Cultural Mediators" by Clara Sue Kidwell (skimmed)
"Decolonizing the Queer Native Body (and Recovering the Native Bull-Dyke): Bringing "Sexy Back" and Out of Native Studies' Closet" by Chris Finley (skimmed)
above three for my native indigenous bodies class
"The Deadly Corruption of Clinical Trials" by Carl Elliott
"Community-Centered Praxis: Toward an Alternative Non-dominative Applied Anthropology" by Merrill Singer (skimmed)
"Ethical and social dilemmas in community-based controlled trials in situations of poverty: a view from a South African project" by Nosisana Nama and Leslie Swartz (skimmed)
"The Personal is Political: Developing new subjectivities through participatory action research" by Caitlin Cahill (skimmed)
above four for my wgs foundations class, the Carl Elliott article is devasting, and a harrowing read
"Prologue," "IV. Bisclavert," and "V. Lanval" from The Lays of Marie de France with commentary and translation by Edward J. Gallagher
"Did the Middle Ages Believe in Their Miracles?" by Steven Justice (skimmed)
above two for the fantasy class i'm assisting. really liked Bisclavert as a werewolf story but there certainly is a lot of misogynistic stuff going on with the women in these stories
excerpts from Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino, translated by William Weaver: "Cities & Memory," "Cities & Desire," and "Cities & the Dead 1, 2, & 4"
read for my global novel class, cool to read part of one of those books everyone talks about
"The Fairy Way of Writing" by Joseph Addison from The Spectator No. 419
also for fantasy class
Started and Ongoing:
Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift, specifically read "The Publisher to the Reader" and "A Voyage to Lilliput"
way more potty humor than i expected, and i enjoyed torturing a friend by reading some of the piss heavy sections of lilliput aloud
The Book of Disappearance by Ibtisam Azem, translated by Sinan Antoon
now this is a book i have a lot to say on (and i technically finished it the morning i'm writing this but i remain committed to how I am dividing my reading logs). i'm reading it for my global novel class. it's a book by a Palestinian author with the premise of "What if, with no warning or explanation, every Palestinian within the borders of Israel and Palestine just disappeared?" It's largely about the reaction of the state of Israel and its citizens, told from the perspective of an Israeli journalist who is reading the personal diary of his Palestinian friend.
yknow how a lot of the time when an author is writing characters that they politically disagree with, they'll end up in the realm of caricature pretty quickly, either cartoonishly out of proportion or softened in a way that shows the writer doesn't actually understand them? this book avoids that entirely and Azem is just masterful at writing Zionist characters that are damning critiques of Zionism without falling into parody. i'm really looking forward to talking about this book in class tomorrow
Ouran High School Host Club, Vol. 6 by Bisco Hatori, translated by Naomi Kokubo & Eric-Jon Rössel Waugh
and now for something completely different. just reading some good old fashioned shoujo for fun! my library has a very eclectic spread of the ohshc ebooks, so i'll have to wait to read the next volume, or skip significantly ahead (tbh. would be fine with this manga probably)

this is literally never going to be published but I like the concept so have my humble offerings.
Summary:
Kal hates Earth, misses his home and loves the farm. It’s a struggle to adjust when you had the light of Rao on your back for ten years and been a pariah for just as long. [Jor-El is murdered, Kal is pursed by Brainiac, and the world does its best.]
Kal doesn’t like English, it’s sticky and clumsy and lacks all the intricacies of Kryptonese. His Ieiu, Mother, had told him English was a baby language, it did not have the forty thousand years of history and development that Kryptonese underwent. It’s barely in its fifteenth century, and steals from other languages.
Ieiu Martha, Ma Martha, Kal corrects with a wince, had told him to be patient, to learn English first and then the rest of the languages and allow his tongue to relax into the clumsiness and thickness of English. Her accent was crisper than Ukr, Pa, she grew up in a city, called Indianapolis, sort of like Kryptonopolis where he had lived with Kara. Pa supposedly has lived here in Kansas since he was born, his own Pa moved them to Smallville after something called the Great Ukrression and there Pa Jonathan was born.
It was a fascinating story and Kal wanted to read more, but the English swam oddly, nothing like the glyphs and markings of Krypton. Letters, what an archaic concept to Kal.
Kara would’ve loved it, though, gone mad over the articles and writing and the breath of emotion captured in their odd positives made into negatives with a simple tone inflection. Kara had always insisted that she would join the Science Guild, but she’d be better suited to the Mediator’s Guild under Lord Fal-Ak’s division which studied the evolution of language and history or perhaps the Warrior’s Guild under Dys-Ur, not the Secret Police but the less warmongering, more culture interested section.
Ieiu hadn’t liked the idea of them working in the Warrior’s Guild with her Ukr, but Kal had sworn he would never join the Secret Police or the Upper Mediator’s Guild. He hadn’t wanted to tell her of his interest in the Labor Guild working as a farmer outside Kryptonopolis, in the fields of Argos where he could see Kara whenever he wanted instead of his Ukr’s lab in the ice plains.
Kal huffs in frustration as the words swim again. How was he so bad at this? Ieiu had been getting translation implants since she was six! He wasn’t Meta Alura for him to be crying over a translation implant!
“Clark?” Ma asks gently. “Are you ready for a break?” Her expression is kind and open, like Kara’s. It’s the only reason Kal hadn’t run away to the arctic where Ukr said he could create his home.
And then there was that name, Clark. An English name, although Kal couldn’t see what was wrong with his name, perhaps because it was typically a nickname?
Kal swallows against the lump in his throat. “I think so, Ma.”
He tries to mimic Pa’s accent with the words. Ukr had explained to him once that mimicking human accents was the easiest thing in the world for his vocal cords built for a range of chirps to warn his clan of something called a Prehistoric Thon. Kal hadn’t asked what that was and Ukr hadn’t answered,
Ma blinks, then a smile breaks out over her face. “I have a surprise for you. I was cleaning that pod of yours and I found something that might just interest you.”
Kal’s breath hitches, it had been so long, he hadn't worked up the courage to see the pod, to see the last piece of home he would ever feel beneath him. He had had no time to pack away his learning modules or plants when Brainiac sent its forces after him, nor would Ieiu allow him too. It would’ve made him all the easier to track.
“Really?” he asks. His accent is still strong, good. Ieiu would be pleased that his skills of subterfuge are improving with every breath he takes on this foreign land. “Can we go now?”
Martha, Ma, smiles kindly. Everything she does is kind although it’s rough and sharp around the edges on occasion. A life full of struggle Pa had said. Kal agrees, but she had taken care of a strange child who spoke clumsy English and passed him off as a foster child, hiding his secret from the paranoid government. He owed it to her to be polite and meet that kindness much like he was helpful and eager with Pa.
“Sure, it’s in the shed, I didn’t wanna move in case of it going boom.” she says, jokingly.
Kal dashes upstairs, barely keeping from smacking into a wall and causing property damage. Her superspeeds into his work boots in case Ma wanted help after she was done showing him whatever his mother stored in his pod. The only thing he likes about Earth, the farm.
