Finished this just in time for the new trailer drop! This is my Mononoke illustration featuring assorted merch from the anime, movie, and stage play! How many can you recognize? ⚖️👹

👁️Overview

Late last year, I rather belatedly discovered Mononoke’s 15th anniversary came and went, and with it, an entire swath of new content to manically pore over. This is an illustration of the various Mononoke merchandise, props, and set dressing I discovered.

🔎Scope

Some fun facts regarding the work that went into this illustration!

Not including research time, this project ran for roughly two months, consuming much of my waking hours outside of my full time and freelance jobs.

While the illustration does not depict all of my findings, it does feature over 120 unique props and set dressings!

The majority of the props and set dressing were modeled to varying degrees of detail in SketchUp.

To model prep, I often put together schematics on Photoshop or Illustrators. Some were created from scratch. Others were created with the liberal usage of the Photoshop transform and perspective warp function.

The master file is 1.5GB. The dimensions are 6400x3600 at 300 dpi, and contains over 2,200 layers.

Near the end of production, the master file became so unwieldy I created a separate working file. This way, I could create assets lag-free then import the layers into the master file.

🗳️3D Layout

As you can see, the backbone of this illustration is the 3D model. I spent perhaps 30-40% of my production time on this stage.

And this is the lit version. The lighting ultimately got downplayed in favor of showcasing the vibrant colors. I like how simple it looks though!

🎬Production-Based Set Dressing

In addition to merchandise, I wanted to insert set dressing and props from the various Mononoke productions.

🦊Kusuriuri

It’s odd to have a section dedicated just to him, but his unique appearance warrants it. His garb and overall appearance is an amalgam of the anime and movie. The original intent was ambiguity– kind of like the blue/black vs. yellow/white dress phenomena a few years back. But after doing the color flats, I rather liked how the rich, unaltered colored fit with the overall composition so it became more blatant. I’m surprised that nobody has commented on this since I published the illustration. Maybe because I didn’t feature him in a close-up?

🐈 kai ~Ayakashi~Bake Neko (2006)

Finding props iconic to this story arc (outside of the Kusuriuri’s tools of trade, of course) was somewhat difficult. While the environment was richly decorated, it mainly consisted of 2D artwork which I wasn’t keen on retracing. I opted to paint objects that characters interacted with or featured heavily in the show.

☂️Mononoke: Karakasa (2024)

Pretty slim pickings for the new movie since I only had the teaser, first trailer, and movie poster to reference from. Kusuriuri’s tools of trade were a given, but finding memorable and narratively significant objects was a tad troublesome.

Thankfully, the set dressing ended up (however subconsciously) strikingly similar to the movie’s environment design, down to the green tatami and multicolor shoji screen. I suppose at this point I was so immersed in Mononoke content that its aesthetics subconsciously informed my design choices!

Plot: Niina Masayoshi is the leader of DCU. The group was newly created by the Japan Coast Guard and stands for Deep Crime Unit. Their mission is to find evidence and dead bodies hidden underwater, that are crucial to solving criminal cases. Niina Masayoshi never gives up investigating the truth.

Interesting and exciting concept, but disappointing execution. It would have been better if they didn't do the "dead friend is actually alive and is now the baddie" trope, and also if they had not killed off that character in ep 03. Well, at least there were some whumpy scenes.

Prisoner to Temptation | Epilogue

Putting a cut here for my beloved @starlightfantasy so as not to spoil things for her. :D

Word Count: 2k (I know, short but super sweet)

A/N: I really should have known that taking a mental break from finishing this story would have disrupted the flow of the universe as we know it, and now we’ve all been made to suffer through the extraordinary stellar beauty of half-naked Chae Hyungwon. He really did that and he did that for me. And, here, I foolishly deluded myself into thinking that I was the one controlling the pain around here. Hyungwon’s had all of the power all along... He compelled me to stay up until 2AM to publish this so I didn’t miss the final week after all.

Anyway, onward toward our happy ending!

The royal wing rang with shrieks of pain and howls of agony so loudly that most corners of the palace grounds had been pierced, too. At the epicenter, in the former bedroom of the Princess Supreme, they were most shrill. There, Naran was propped against her headboard, her hands gripping two straps tethered to the ceiling as a pair of mid-wives pressed back her knees. Sweat poured down the princess’s face, and her thin cotton robe clung to her body.

“It is time, Your Majesty,” said a squat, wizened woman, with her own sweat-peppered brow and wise eyes.

Empress Indeok turned her attention to her daughter-in-law, though the princess couldn’t seem to focus her gaze on anything in the room. In her firm, soothing voice, the empress said, “Naran, are you ready to welcome your baby to the world?”

“No, I want Saran. Where’s Saran?” demanded the frazzled princess.

Hyungwon mopped a fresh cloth along his wife’s forehead as he answered, “She’s still a week out, darling, remember?”

Naran’s eyes widened to their limit as panic overtook her. She shook her head frantically. “No! I have to wait for her! She has to be here. We can wait, right?”

“Your Highness,” warned the mid-wife, “you must keep Her Grace calm.”

“And just how do I do that?” he snapped. “She’s suffering so.”

“Talk to your wife, Your Highness. She will need you to help her through this,” the old woman urged.

Hyungwon grabbed the support ties by Naran’s hand, and the princess immediately snapped the trap to clench his hand, too. With his free hand, he brushed his wife’s sodden bangs from her forehead as he praised her, “Do you have any idea how beautiful you are right now?”

“Liar,” snarled Naran though she squeezed his hand urgently.

“You’re having our baby. What could be more beautiful in the whole world?”

“Wonnie, I’m so scared.”

“As am I, my love, but it’s a good kind of scary, isn’t it?”

Indeok rubbed Naran’s forearm as she added, “It is terrifying, but in a few minutes, it will be perfect. You’ll be a family.”

The princess let out a pained sob but nodded. “Please do not leave me, Mother.”

A single tear slipped from the corner of the empress’s eye as she laid a reassuring hand on the princess’s enormous stomach. “I swear it then.”

“Your Highness,” said one of the younger midwives to Naran, “it is time to push.”

The panic was back in Naran’s voice as she jolted up. “How?”

The old woman who knelt between the princess’s legs gently guided her ankles back a bit higher and wider as she continued in a sturdy, confident voice, “Bear down as hard as you can and trust what nature tells you to do. Do not forget to breathe, Your Highness.”

Naran’s terrified eyes whipped up to her husband. Sweat dripped into them, making them itch, but Hyungwon was quick to wipe it away.

“You’re ready, my love. You can do it,” he assured.

“I can’t. I can’t. It hurts. You’ve no idea how much.”

“You’re right, I do not, but you are the most fearsome person I have ever met, Naran. You can do anything. Squeeze my hand as hard as you can. Hurt me if you must. I’m right here.”

The princess looked at her husband, who had never looked surer of anything in his life. Her hand tightened around his tighter and tighter and tighter, and though her nails bit into his skin until creases formed at the edge of his eyes, Hyungwon’s support did not waver.

At last, Naran announced, “I am ready.”

“Push, Your Grace,” urged the midwife, and Naran let out a grunt and a wail as her eyes winched shut until she saw blooms of white like dandelion seeds exploding in the wind.

“Breathe,” Hyungwon whispered in that reassuring rasp that she loved.

The princess gulped for breath, and as the other midwife counted down on her fingers, the one stationed between her legs said, “Push!”

Another round and then another and then another. Each time, the agony intensified until Naran was nothing but a bundle of straining muscles and raw nerves.

“There’s the head!” the midwife rejoiced at length.

Naran’s head sagged back on her shoulders. It wasn’t the pain that overwhelmed so much as it was the intensity of the whole experience. Her body felt distended to its max. She wanted to curl in on herself like a pill bug to escape, but there was an even more pressing need to purge herself. Her body had not been her own for months on end, and it was fighting tooth and nail to reclaim itself.

“Wonnie,” she whimpered, “I don’t know how much more of this I can take.”

He kissed her then and turned his hand in hers to hold it properly. His soothing gaze met her strung-out one, and already, she felt strength welling in her again. He smiled then and said, “It’s almost over, darling. We’re finally going to meet our baby.”

“Yeah…” she said breathlessly.

“And when you teach it Moghul, you’ll teach me, too, right?”

“Push, Your Highness!”

Naran screamed a yes through another squeeze as the midwives readied the room for the baby’s arrival.

Hyungwon continued combing his wife’s bangs back from her forehead as he continued, “And when our child is old enough, we will ride back to Moghulikhan.”

“I was born... On a horse... You know,” she managed through gritted teeth.

“I know.”

“One more!” the midwife commanded again as she pressed back the princess’s knees, and this time, as Naran gulped for breath and winched her eyes shut, she funneled what was left of her strength into her belly muscles. At last, the pressure released, and as soon as it did, she felt her bones turn to jelly. She sank into the bed with an incredulous sob and a drunken laugh, and when she glanced up, Hyungwon was crying.

“My love?” Naran said weakly.

Only then did the shrill cry pierce her foggy brain.

Their baby had arrived.

“It's a girl, Your Highnesses!” one of the midwives proclaimed.

Again, Naran looked nervously to her husband, but the enormous smile on his face was equaled only by the day she had told him she loved him too. Wet tracks glistened on his cheeks as the midwives handed their daughter to the prince. The bundle was small and tight, but the wails were earsplitting, yet it was the most resplendent sound she had ever heard in her whole life. The princess couldn't see her baby's face, but she didn't need to. She saw her husband's. Every curve of Hyungwon’s face was as soft and puffy as a cloud and just as bright as he rocked the bundle in his arms.

“She's beautiful, like a little star,” he whispered. It was nearly drowned out by the baby's cries, but Naran heard it all the same. “Just like her mother.”

The midwives finished cleaning up the princess, and Naran barely had the strength to do anything other than stare at her new family beside her. The eldest midwife rattled off instructions for the prince, who nodded and hummed as though he were listening though his eyes never left his daughter. The midwife grinned as she grabbed a wet cloth and dabbed the baby's face clean before she returned to the princess.

As the sheets were tucked around the princess's waist, the grandmotherly midwife said, “Congratulations, Your Highnesses. May she be as strong and gentle and beloved as the two of you are.”

“She’s already beloved,” murmured the prince.

He bowed to the midwives and, at last, laid their daughter on Naran’s breast, its scrunched and angry face huffing out rattling breaths that soothed with every beat of its mother’s heart. A moment later, Hyungwon crawled into the empty space beside Naran and joined her head on the pillow so they could both stare at the little moon face who had finally stopped screaming. His arm wrapped around his wife’s waist as he pressed his forehead to hers.

“Welcome to the world, little princess,” cooed the empress as she tickled her finger under the baby’s chin. There was marvel in Indeok’s eyes as she whispered, “A granddaughter… How lovely. I always wanted a little girl. She’s perfect.”

“She is,” echoed Hyungwon.

Naran nodded, a drowsy smile pasted on her lips. Her words were slurred with both exhaustion and love as she said, “Someone please tell my Magda, though, no doubt her ear is already at the door.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it, My Lady!” came the trembling proclamation through the wall along with the telltale hiccup of poorly controlled sobs of joy.

Indeok laughed and kissed all three of her loved ones on the forehead before she stood, smoothed out her hanbok, wiped another round of tears from her eyes, and headed for the door. “I will share the good news with the palace. You three stay here and fall deeper in love.”

“My mother,” laughed Hyungwon, “ever the poet.”

“Yes, well, I have much to write about these days, do I not? I will send for some fresh cold water and some nourishment. Congratulations, Your Highnesses,” said the empress with a deep bow for the two generations behind her.

“Thank you, Mother,” Naran said weakly though it was with a grateful smile.

With that, Indeok slipped out, and the last thing the princess saw before the door closed was Magda’s red face bloated with tears and a toothy grin.

“Saran is going to be so disappointed she missed this,” murmured the princess.

“How can she be disappointed with such a mesmerizing creature here to greet her?”

Naran smiled and sighed effervescently.

“How are you feeling, my love?” Hyungwon asked.

“Exhausted and very sore, but never better.”

“Whatever you need, just tell me,” he urged.

“A kiss?” suggested the princess, tearing her eyes away from the squirming, huffing bundle on her chest to her husband’s glowing face.

The prince planted a lingering kiss on her lips before he nuzzled his nose along hers, and then they returned their loving gazes to their new baby.

“What shall we name her?” asked Naran, entranced.

“How about something Moghul?”

She gawked at her husband. “You want to name a Goryeon princess something Moghul? The Emperor will laugh us out of the realm.”

“You’re still here, Princess Narangerel,” he teased.

“Yes, but I walked into this role. I wasn’t born into it, and I’m certainly not the granddaughter to the mighty Emperor Gongmin.”

Hyungwon scoffed playfully. “By the time Goryeon Court gets done with its thirty million ceremonies, our little star will be gifted another thirty million names of distinction. She is ours and her name should be a special gift from us.”

“I love you,” Naran blurted suddenly.

The prince kissed her again, slowly and gently, careful not to wake the tiny pink bean now slumbering. When he pulled back, he said, “So, is that a yes to a Moghul name?”

“Absolutely yes, and I think I have the perfect one.”

“Let me hear it, my darling.”

“Odgerel.”

Hyungwon tested it out on his lips, and by the last syllable, the name had curled them into a smile. “What does it mean?”

“Well, my name means sunlight, my sister’s, moonlight, and Odgerel means starlight. I thought since you have called us both your little star—”

“I love it. It’s brilliant.”

“You do?” Naran asked excitedly.

The prince nodded. “It’s a name fit for a princess of two realms, but more importantly, a name fit for our little princess. Odgerel.”

“Odgerel,” repeated the Princess Supreme as she studied the scrunched face of her daughter. With a happy sigh, Naran said, “She has your button nose.”

Hyungwon grinned a wonky grin and tightened his arm around his girls. “You think so?”

“Mm, definitely. I loved that nose the moment I saw it,” his wife said as she kissed him on its rounded tip.

“Naran?”

“Hm?” she murmured, her eyelids drooping with every passing blissful second.

“This is the happiest day of my life.”

“Mm, mine too…” said she as she drifted in and out. “I love you, Wonnie.”

The prince kissed both his princesses’ crowns then, and with the last of her consciousness, Naran heard her husband whisper, “I love you more than anything, my lights of my life.”

A/N: I hope I fulfilled my promises to you and delivered the fluffy, joyous ending our leads deserved. At over 125k, we can add another tally to my MX archives of excessive indulgence. I know there’s a serious lack of chapter Hyungwon fics out there (why??? He’s so deserving of adventures and romance and happyhappyhappy endings. So. First things first. Boy am I dizzy. This is, at this point, four years of work invested in this video series. We won't get into the nitty gritty on WHY it works out so well, as much as enjoy what it is!

However, The Winchesters took its own means of reshuffling. If you view the old post, one song remained the same in both directions: 11 is 11, Reflections. It's a causal point, and has been moved to midseason, respectively, as 1x7 Reflections. Rolling back, if one starts the spiral at Mantra, 11 becomes 7, and the track plays out, reverting after 12 to the steps missed earlier, 1-4 respectively, but reverse: 4-1.

I know that sounds like wonky math, don't overthink it, just. Explaining there IS method to the madness. The simplest thing to remember is, follow the basic ideas: Generational Trauma, who the generations ARE, doors, spears, guns, blossoms, you name it. You WILL get dizzy you WILL be overwhelmed but ride it and you'll put the pieces together.

tracking nuthphop through music: ep 4 and 5

*warning that songs and timestamps may not be 100% accurate, i tried by best tho. also i tried to descirbe the emotions of some of the songs but im not great at naming emotions so sorry in advance*

Ep 4

first nuthphop scene where phop is streaming.

- (kenji-ooyy 2:00) at the beginning of ep 4 their first contact is nuth private messaging phop while he’s live, the music is digital and in my sleepy state i’ll describe it as uptempo rock guitars with a lil hip hop influence. it’s exciting and sits closer to dark than light.

-(couldnt find the track 2:50) we then change to just nuth and phop messaging and the music is this like quick pulsating suspense synth and kick drum that to me sounds a bit like a beating heart.

- (couldnt find the track 3:20) then it switches to a 4 on the floor disco edm type sound.

- (machine vs machine - dream cave 3:50) when nuths payment comes through we go to dark and heavy synth sounds to me it almost sounds like a battle scene.

- (inverted - hampus naeselius 5:03) when nuth gets blocked we go back to quick pulse beats that sound like it’s misc digital percussion with some haunting higher pitched synths pulsing in and out

Phop agreeing to film with nuth

- (32:23 drifting emotions howard harper-barnes) this song starts right after the keen and phop moment where they have to stop because keen refused to wear a condom, it plays during phops narration about sex work and ends when he checks a message from nuth [the "im so sad you blocked me" one]

- (34:26 ambivalent thoughts- magnus ringblom) their messaging convo is silent until nuth sends a deposit and phop starts seriously considering meeting up with him again. it’s a sentimental piano ballad.

Nuth on the phone with mystery guy (i suspect jason lee) aka my beloved invisible hand scene

- (couldn’t find the track 37:57) it’s silent as the camera zooms in on nuth looking at his bank account. then at his trophy/plaque. when he makes the decision to call to ask to sell drugs [for daddy jason lee??] again theirs a heartbeat like bass drum and various reverbed and echoy percussion sounds that come in and out

- (39:11 cry- johannes bornlôf) another sad piano song. this plays as nuth finishes the phone call. i think it’s interesting that we get sad piano ballads for the phop/nuthphop/nuth scenes because they don’t [typically] repeat songs despite choosing ones that sound very similar…

the filming

- (couldn’t find the track 48:22) phop arrives at the filming location to a hip hop drum beat.

- (colds- guß 48:50) this sorta upbeat while still being lowkey electro instrumental plays when nuth tells phop to relax and they begin to set up

- (49:25 feelin ma self- push n glide) during the test lines this more uptempo and confident beat plays, specifically when nuths camera changes from just filming phop to filming him is a sexual way? idk how i want to explain it but yeah the song changes when the camera nuth is holding changes the way it views phop. [sidenote hihats in this one lowkey hit, idk what the gun shot sounds doing here tho].

- (50:22 kenji- ooyy) then we have an upbeat synth and electric guitar based hip hop beat when nuth says he’ll start revealing the acts he wants phop to do and what he’ll pay for them. This is the same song they play during our very first nuthphop moment so its like full circle for them in terms of their journey this ep (i think this may represent the fact that they begin and end with nuth paying phop to perform on camera for him) [side note the beat drops when nuth says he’ll wear a condom]

- i will also mention a trap beat plays at the end of the ep but it plays over all the characters so i’m not really counting it as a nuthphop song

ep 5

nuth and phop are chilling high on the bacony with nuth teasing and recording phop.

- (30:35 kobicha- arden forest) a sad? low piano solo plays while nuth watches fondly as phop tries to lick his own elbow.

- (31:24 yoiyami- sayuri hayashi egnell) a different piano solo (brighter and a bit pluckier) plays as phop begins reading nuths new script. this song continues playing through the “people like us can’t make porn that gets seen as art or wins awards, ours only gets seen as obscene” scene. it stops when nuth starts looking sad and phop changes the subject to having to leave and go to work.

- (32:50 ambivalent thoughts- magnus ringblom) this is the song that played last ep when nuth asked phop to consider filming with him and sends a deposit. this starts playing as nuth carries phop out on his back and then as hes shaving him. it stops abruptly with a high pitched noise when phop refers to nuth as his client and nuth points out he can only pay with drugs and not cash. there’s not music playing as nuth asks phop not to leave him to go work.

- (34:15 scared of water - kikoru) this eerie string piece plays as nuth stares down at phop with the shaving blade in his hand, it continues throughout them kissing and the pan down to nants necklace on the floor

artsy nuthphop scene

- (45:40 yoiyami- sayuri hayashi egnell) [notice this played earlier] it begins during the convo where aob rejects puen and then carries into the scene where the camera is all shaky and nuth and phop are under a purplish spotlight in a room that is dark. as nuth says “im hallucinating i can hear his voice” phop suddenly appears next to him and says “im physically here” and the music stops abruptly. i will say because of where it played earlier in the ep this song feels like it represents nuths hopeless feelings.

- (46:49 i can’t find this song for shit yall im sorry like it’s making me insane i cannot find this fucking song) phop says “i miss you” and nuth says “me or the drugs?” when phop says “both” a new song starts and plays while they have sex it’s upbeat and with strings and digital percussion and have lyrics that give like love against the odds vibes or like love at the end of the world. this is while they have sex and theres also random shots of a field of grain? and cowboys hugging?

- (49:08 incomplete- gavin luke) after they wake up and are staring at eachother a new piano song plays it’s kinda sad not in a i’m sad way but in a feeling lowkey CALM calm is the word but also light

- (50:00 last level part 2- hey son) this song plays briefly when phop picks up and shows nuth the N necklace. and nuth has a flashback.

- (50:40 hope will prevail- ecobel) this piano part that leads into like edm ish lowkey beats plays when phop asks it he can keep the necklace to remind him of nuth. the beat drops when they kiss.

this was really interesting imo. like how in ep 4 they begin and end the ep with the same song, how when they're being honest about emotions and feelings they get piano ballads but they have different flavours, etc. im excited to do the next eps

Tokyo MER: Mobile Emergency Room Whump List

Synopsis: Tokyo MER was formed by order from the Governor of Tokyo. The members are emergency care professionals who go to sites of dangerous accidents and disasters using ER cars. Their ER car is a large vehicle equipped with the latest medical devices and an operating area where Tokyo MER saves the lives of the injured.

Kitami Kota is a doctor for Tokyo MER and its leader. He holds firm convictions that he goes to accident sites to save lives regardless of the dangers.

📢 ALERT ALERT! Parallel found!!! Remember the scene from Ep 03 where I pointed out the teensy tiny line of power above Porsche's head during the Mes beating?

This damn shot is exactly the same with the tiny line above Kinn's head, the darker half of the screen to the left, and the lighter elements on the right. *eyetwitch* This show, tryin' ta kill me.

(I have a feeling I'll start finding more parallels like this. Maybe later on I'll have enough to pull them together in a special post.)

*mutter mutter* damn mirrors *mutter mutter*

You know? I really don't care about the lines dividing the screen in top and bottom (heh, top and bottom, heh), but the POOL reflections, unf. This show has an obsession with mirrors, and it's absolutely nucking futz.

The symbolism is kind of off the charts. Just...think about inversions, and reversals, and opposites, and hidden selves and...okay, you get the idea.

That beautiful, beautiful line between them, dividing them. In this case, it's a clear separation of dislike.

There's a LOT of this sort of vertical dividing in this episode.

Speaking of which...

Credit to @moerusai for help with this one. I was scanning and scanning. I knew there had to be something in the Porchay Kim scene but kept missing it because it's subtle and brief. So I called in mo for backup.

See the speaker? The edge of the speaker creates a softer, subtler dividing line between the two young'uns.

I'm so soft for these two. You have no idea. 😭😭😭 C'mon, darlings, you can break down that measly little barrier!

And then there are these assholes...

Dividing line. Diving line. FUCKING DIVIDING LINE. Shot after shot, WTF. Okay, okay already, we get it. They are NOT on the same wavelength yet, geez.

These two have issues, and it's everyone's problem, including theirs.

ALSO: In the first and third shots in this set, Porsche has a lighter background. And in ALL of the shots, Kinn has a darker background, especially that last shot. This is a reversal from Episode 3 of the scene where Kinn tended Porsche's gunshot wound, when Porsche had the dark background and Kinn had the light background.

*mutter mutter* mirrors and reversals and opposites and foils *mutter*

Kim, I'm glad they let you out of the cage for a little bit this episode, but I'm sad that they immediately put you back in it. Oof, look at those railing posts acting like prison bars!

This dude is so trapped by circumstances. Kim, darling, it's gonna be okay (I hope).

I try to keep the pics mostly in order of appearance in the episode, but the 10-pic limit for posts is real, so here we are.

I put these together as examples of Kinn and His Fucking Throne Habit. He's SO good at it. Everywhere he sits, he turns it into a throne.

In the sauna, he's in the higher position, in the best lighting, and that line on the left in particular is pointing right at him.

At the auction, will you look at the curved shelf behind him? That damn shelf points right at him and helps draw attention to him, as do the highlights on the top of the blue bench, plus he's very center in the frame. Even in this busy shot, he claims visual focus (while competing with the glow lamp of doom).

I desperately need to see this throne thing reversed in the future, to see a moment when he ISN'T in the king's seat. It's the only way I will feel peace and balance.

In contrast...

Everybody puts Vegas in the corner. Because he deserves it, the sleazebag. (But he's very good at being a sleazebag, and we appreciate that. Thank you for being our villain so we can hate you.)

This framing is shit. The dude in the foreground and the lamp weaken Vegas's attempt to sprawl with his arms and take up space. Nothing is pointing to him, and the foreground dude's mysterious floating head is much more interesting than Vegas. Plus, he just looks shrunken.

He's small. He's powerless. And he haaaates it, precious.

RESCUE MISSION!

These shots have such a feeling of tightness and claustrophobia to them. They're crowded, with tall verticals that make the characters seem hemmed in, trapped. And in the third shot, the closeness of the characters and the camera add to that sensation. All of this framing adds to the anxiety and tension of the moment.

Alright so I have thoughts about the 5th lab stuff (some of this may change as I finish the mini arc but I am impatient (currently about half way through ep 20)).

1) Where is the circle for human transmutation? Most of this follows the manga pretty closely but the circle just isn't on the floor even though it was very clearly important and solidified the lab's connection to the stone so why leave it out

2) Greed's brief appearance in ep 19. Just why? That just means nothing to anyone who doesn't have prior knowledge of the series and if you do it's almost more confusing. It just feels unnecessary and if they don't do something with it soon it just wasn't a good story telling choice

3) Also what was the point of the Indiana Jones esque booby traps except to take up time like sure it was funny and often that is reason enough for me but so much in 03 feels like it is obnoxiously stretched out that this just feels like more filler almost

Dear M*A*S*H: S1 Ep 03 “Requiem for a Lightweight”

Previous episode here.

This episode follows much the same pattern established in the previous two; Hawkeye and Trapper encounter a problem. Hawkeye comes up with a devious plan to solve it. Trapper assists. Hijinks ensue.

I think it’s worth noting that I always saw Hawkeye as the main character of M*A*S*H and assumed that was the common perception. I’ve since come across the view that Trapper was meant to be an equal protagonist, and that his secondary role in these episodes was a mistake or unexpected. While I don’t claim to know all intentions or understandings behind the scenes, the pilot certainly primed me to see Hawkeye as the protagonist and Trapper as his wing man, and the next few episodes further reinforce that--not necessarily to the show’s benefit, as the formula already feels a little repetitive.

This episode departs from the established formula, though, in that what sets events in action is not the noble desire to send a Korean boy to college or procure medicine for patients, but the far baser desire to keep around a hot nurse whom Hawkeye and Trapper both want to bang. The show does make a point of the fact that she’s also a talented nurse, and to his credit, Hawkeye seems genuine when he tells Henry, “Real talent in the operating room is hard to find.” Given how much focus the episode puts on Hawkeye and Trapper competing for Nurse Cutler’s affections, however, and the fact that her supposed talent is demonstrated with a brief scene in which she... does exctly what every other nurse in the outfit does, it’s hard to believe that it’s her competence spurring the surgeons’ efforts to get her transferred back to the 4077. If only she had done something a little more extraordinary--noticed something a doctor or Houlihan missed, perhaps--the stakes would feel higher, more sympathetic, and more in line with the ethos of the show. The writing doesn’t convince me that anything bad would come of the failure of Hawk and Trap’s plan, which is never a good sign for the strength of a story. There are even plenty of other beautiful women whose pants they can try to get into, so it’s not like they’ll be forced into monkhood without her.

If Cutler weren’t so gorgeous, would they go to such lengths? I doubt it--unless, again, she’d done something more medically significant. But I suppose the writers didn’t think the audience would be as invested in good nursing as hot nurses, especially for a comedic premise. This is the kind of plotline I’m glad the show soon left behind.

One thing of interest to me is the chain of cause and effect between Margaret and our dynamic duo. It’s really their disrespect of Margaret that creates all of their problems in the first place. Margaret regards Hawkeye’s flirting with Cutler in OR with disapproval, but I don’t believe it’s until she attempts to confront him later that she makes up her mind to have Cutler transferred. Annoyed that Margaret is interrupting them chatting up Nurse Cutler, Hawk and Trap let loose on her before Margaret can get in a word. Notably, the insults focus on her womanhood and sexuality with quips such as “At least she didn’t have any trouble figuring out your sex.” It’s after this degrading exchange that Margaret decides to take drastic measures.

Hawkeye and Trapper’s animosity towards Margaret is of course further aroused by the news of the transfer. Yet later, when Trapper is practicing his punches for the big match using Frank’s duffel, Margaret passes by and Hawkeye offers a cordial, “Morning, Major” with no apparent ulterior motive. He turns back to Trapper as if expecting her to move on. Margaret is obviously caught off guard, though, and stops to reply “Good morning, Captain,” with a pleased smile. Surprisingly, Hawkeye continues the conversation rather civilly, though it’s clearly no invitation for her to stay and chat. Now, it’s possible, I suppose, that he’s baiting her with what she notices next; her good mood sours as she points out, “Isn’t that Frank’s bag?” that Trapper is punching. To my eyes, though, there’s nothing that indicates Hawkeye was expecting that turn, or the retort Trapper shoots back: “I thought you were Frank’s bag!”--though I could just as easily imagine this coming out of Hawkeye’s mouth. It’s yet another insult to Margaret’s femininity, and I wonder if what follows would have happened if Trapper had kept his trap shut.

I don’t think it’s any coincidence that Trapper is the one who stands to pay the price when Margaret attempts to foil their plan to cheat in the boxing match. Frank is against the ether plan on “principle” and, I suspect, simply because he doesn’t like Hawkeye and Trapper and would find it funny to see Trapper get hurt. For Margaret, who actually pulls the switcheroo of ether for water, I think it’s revenge of a more personal nature.

While Hawkeye and Trapper thus create all their own problems in this episode, the show doesn’t cast them in a bad light for it; at least, not for their insults to Margaret. What I do think the show is already implicitly poking fun at is Hawkeye’s Don Juan persona, which is so overdone with Cutler that I believe it was meant to make even contemporary audiences cringe. It’s a proper comeuppance when in the end she goes for Trapper instead, who hasn’t crowded her nearly as much.

It’s interesting too that for all Hawkeye’s Lothario tendencies, he’s hardly typically masculine in this episode. He’s no red-blooded all-American hero, ready to put his body in harm’s way for the woman he loves. He’s ready--eager even--to throw his friend under the bus and let him take the physical beat down. He readily admits, when Trapper questions his “bad shoulder,” that it’s “the result of being spineless.” It’s played for laughs, and the ending reinforces that the coward doesn’t get the girl; it’s also the clearest indication we’ve had yet of what an atypical protagonist Hawkeye is. We’re meant to admire and like him--for his principles, intellect, and compassion, not for his brash readiness for a fight or coolness in the face of danger. A coward he is not, as we’ll see time and again, but he is afraid, of many things, which the series will not shy away from exploring. But I’m getting ahead of myself. For now, suffice to say, John Wayne he most certainly ain’t.

More thoughts:

I didn’t realize before that at the beginning when they’re leaving the mess tent, Radar isn’t playing cards with Hawkeye and Trapper. They’ve roped him into being their table so they can continue their game on the way to OR.

It was a surprise to see Frank happily planting flowers and I actually felt bad when Trapper picked them all. This was probably just for the gag but now I’m wondering about gardening Frank headcanons.

Trapper’s “Only if you put those on” to Hawkeye as he fingers the pantyhose: he really didn’t have to lean in so close and say it so flirty. And yet he did.

I believe this is the first appearance of The Still 2.0! Not in its full glory yet; still rather rudimentary.

When the boxing opponent shows up, his C.O. asks if they can “rustle up some steaks” for him. Maybe that’s why they had steak on hand for Trapper’s black eye later, when we know good meat is a rare commodity at the 4077.

First appearance of William Christopher as Father Mulcahy! And in typical fashion he destroys Trapper with a single word of advice for the match: “Prayer.”

Biggest laugh runner up (couldn’t pick just one): Hawkeye on his fake bad shoulder: “Actually, I’m in pain most of the time. I don’t like to burden my friends,” made all the better by him trying to use the same line at the very end, only to get literally pushed off the bed as Cutler goes for Trapper. What can I say, I love loser Hawkeye.

Biggest laugh: Hawkeye to Trapper, Serious Face on: “You got a cute body.”

Parting thoughts: There are lots of good laughs here, but it just hasn’t got the substance or plot strength of the previous episode or even the pilot, something that might have been easily fixed by fleshing out Nurse Cutler’s competence and upping the stakes.
