I've had this whole. Theory of Diavolo post floating in my head for ages but I haven't gotten around to it until now bc it requires a lot of. Screenshot editing,,,,

Diavolo - Truth and Lies

Spoilers for:

Main story up through Lesson 16

So basically:

Diavolo has the ability to tell lies - this is confirmed in several places in canon.

My personal headcanon/theory is that this isn't Diavolo being a people person (although he probably is, to some extent). This isn't even a special ability Diavolo has, either as a demon, or as a future Demon King.

I think this is a curse. Specifically, I think this is a curse that Diavolo asked a witch to place on him, and the caveat of this curse is that Diavolo cannot tell a lie.

It's totally possible there are instances of this being blown out of the water in canon but Diavolo is usually pretty diplomatic in his denials and avoids telling direct lies so just stay with me for a moment. I HAVE SCREENSHOTS!!

The first question of course is. "Who would have put a curse like this on him, Elsey? He's the Demon Prince. He's ridiculously powerful, what kind of witch could even do that? Even Solomon might not be able to."

We do know a witch who might have done it! A witch who would have been powerful enough, and who has a pretty interesting relationship with Diavolo: Maddi!

Maddi is acknowledged, by Satan, Lucifer, and Diavolo, to be extremely powerful. Literally Lucifer is going "When someone radiates power like she did..." Lucifer!

The really interesting bit is later on - that Maddi refused to return to the human world until Dia married her, and it was really long ago.

It sounds like, in return for casting this curse on Dia, Maddi wanted his hand in marriage. It'd explain both her entitlement, and the reason Diavolo had a hard time turning her down - because she did him a favor!

And also why Diavolo is pimping out Satan and Lucifer not to see her again lmaoooo. This, I daresay, is why Diavolo doesn't like her - it's not necessarily a reasonable request she's making, but she also did something for him that literally no one else could have done.

Plus she's supposedly smoking hot and if she likes Luci and Satan, her taste in men is absolutely fine. Listen Diavolo I'll take one for the team and marry her myself -

Anyways. Second point here - this happened "a really long time ago". This is a point in favor of my theory, because Diavolo has been asserting that he is honest/never lies for a very long time indeed:

This is a MEGA long time ago - before Lucifer fell from heaven, even.

Now ofc Diavolo doesn't outright say it's a curse (and I doubt this theory is something the devs intended), but it does sound like Diavolo is leaning on the "honest" thing pretty heavily, no?

(Bonus points: In his recently-released character songs, one of Diavolo's lines is actually - "I have nothing to hide/I am always honest")

Consider also the fact that if this is true, it goes a good way to explain how Diavolo is getting along with Lucifer so well, and pressing the point of peace even though Lucifer quite clearly looks down on demons as an archangel.

See, Lucifer actually tells a couple of blatant lies during this visit:

If Diavolo has this ability to know for certain when someone is lying, then he knows Lucifer doesn't hate him/the Devildom as much as he said (and Lucifer's dad hung him out to dry on the speech thing lmaooo)

Now, on to what I consider the most damning piece of evidence - we have the actual statement in Lesson 4 during Levi's TSL quiz, that Diavolo can tell when someone is lying

Diavolo was brought in to judge this event, too - almost certainly because he has this ability. "You know as well as I do" - this is something all the brothers, and possibly the demon populace as a whole, know about Diavolo.

Levi later does concede that he lost; he believes Diavolo's ability, and implicitly, believes that Diavolo isn't lying about it. But canonically, this is our confirmation that Diavolo can tell when someone is lying, possibly as some supernatural "ability".

The real proof comes in lesson 16. Belphie, at this point, absolutely despises both humankind - and naturally, the suggestion that Lilith became human - and Diavolo. That's important. He HATES Diavolo and Diavolo's ideas.

If you chose to tell him "I'm sorry you found out this way", he goes on to mope a bit until his brothers encourage him.

But what if you choose to say "You really won't believe it?"

Belphie insists he won't believe it. He could never believe it. And honestly this makes a lot of sense, and feels like the natural reaction he'd have to such an unforeseen revalation.

And then Diavolo says "It's the truth". Diavolo, who Belphie hates. What reason does Belphegor possible have to -

Aaaaaand he believes him. Just like that. Now, I'm gonna be real, I'm not super impressed with how the writers handled this plot twist, especially in light of the aftermath. HOWEVER.

It's still fucking weird that Belphie just accepts Diavolo's word so easily, accepts the entire story and spins right into repentance and blaming himself for Lilith's death...

...unless. Diavolo is magically incapable of lying. Perhaps because he's been cursed?

The brothers all know about Maddi (it's in the escorts mission). They very probably would all know why Diavolo doesn't get along with her, but still has to accommodate her when she visits. It would make sense for Belphie to know about this, actually.

Annnnnyyways that's my favorite pet Diavolo theory that's been rattling around in my head for a while. It's by no means canon or confirmed (canon seems to forget about Diavolo's ability to tell when someone is lying on the regular, anyways), but my god, is it interesting.

Diavolo being a living lie detector and unable to lie makes him an invaluable plot device, a useful tool to a resourceful enough MC, and even as cursed as the theory suggests, if you remember a little oneshot I wrote called "Heartache".

It is just. hnnng. Absolutely delicious. I love the idea so much and wish there were more of it in canon... but hey. That's what fics are for ;)

Sooo i may have downloaded gw2 because of you. This game is SO PRETTY.

Do you have any tips? I have exp with mmorpg but never played gw2. Take responsibility and share some wisdom!

:o!! omg??? Didn't think my recent constant gw2 posting would actually get someone playing sdhgjkdg I really hope you're having fun!! It's a gorg game with some flaws that are honestly frustrating at times but I heard most MMOs are like that? <-has literally only played Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 so those are my only as frames of reference

But tips!! Bit hard to think of some since tbh, I'm a filthy casual (and tbh not that skilled of a player, but recently I found out it's partially because of my ADHD?? It's weird lol) but I have some thoughts and tips and little QoL things I've picked up over the years.

Disclaimer though: I got the back when it wasn't free to play to try it out and idk if you're on the f2p right now since I'm guessing you're just trying it out (unless you went ahead and got End of Dragons which I think gives you both Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire now for free too?) so uh not sure if all these apply (also I mainly play PvE so)—

I won't talk too much about the Personal Story to not spoil anything, and I don't know if you've gone with the sylvari for your character/one of your characters. But trust me, if you haven't please give them a go for at least the first thirty levels because it gives a lot more—like way more to the point that I was surprised that people didn't get why He was so important to the story because I went with sylvari first—context as to why A Certain Character becomes heavily involved in the story when you reach level 60.

If you don't like your starting area, take the asura gate to Lion's Arch then head to Eastern Ward, from there you can take asura gates to all the major racial cities. Best layout for everything you need in one place is Rata Sum tbh but personally I live at the Grove

Get a nice guild!! Enhances the experience so much imo! And also LFG can seem hopeless sometimes because it tends to be empty but I find that parties for even Dungeons fill up eventually

Gameplay-wise, you can go with literally any profession and any playstyle you want, especially for open world and story. Try everything out! Iirc you can open your PvP tab and enter the Heart of the Mists to be temporarily max level and do whatever you want with your build to try it out.

Alternatively, metabattle.com is your friend for builds too. Though it doesn't really matter while you're levelling up.

And tbh a lot of core Tyria stuff (non-expansion areas) + Personal Story can be done while underlevelled and underarmored. Your best defense is actually your dodgeroll, so generally people go for gear that gives Power, Precision, and Ferocity (Berserker's). But for other modes you can take more supportive roles (boons, healing power, etc).

There's a wardrobe tab in your Bank that lets you try on literally any skin in the game, both armor and weapons. It'll use whatever dyes you currently have on and is great for Fashion Wars

Killing yellow mobs that haven't been killed in a while (usually found in map areas where there aren't a lot of people) grants a lot of bonus XP

This is such a grindy thing and I'm sure there's more efficient ways, but in your Dailies there's usually a map where you need to clear like, 4 events to fulfill. Those maps usually have a lot of people doing events and calling them out and I'd usually stay there and grind until I hit 80 lmao

I think you can also do this by doing a lot of WvW but I'm never in that area because my laptop can't take it. It's lots of fun when you manage to find a zerg though!

Iirc PvP also gives nice rewards and is really fun! I just handle the stress and my ping is too bad to be reliable hjkgdfg

Log in everyday for those Login rewards. They come in pretty useful and if you need quick cash, those Mystic Coins go for like 80+ silver each lmao And I think this is the only way to get Laurels for Ascended trinkets

Regarding the Unidentified Gears you get, I personally open them then salvage everything with a good salvage kit. The materials sell for more than the gears themselves, tho for Rare Unidentified gear you can take your chances with just selling them straight if you don't want the gamble of hoping for Globs of Ectoplasm (which sell for like, 1 more silver than each Rare Unid Gear but you can get multiple if you salvage Rare armor and weapons. But also none so yeah, discretion >.>)

The Personal Story absolutely does not take you through the entire map—I think when I did some Personal Story only runs on some characters I got only like, 11-13% world completion? So explore!

Speaking of, there's a lot of interesting little hidden spots around the world. Find some Jumping Puzzles, they are incredible and lots of fun and frustration >w< There should be a couple just in Lion's Arch, actually.

You can buy food and utility consumables on the Trading Post, and right now at the time of writing, you can go get a shit ton of useful food items for a little Zhaitaffy.

Breaking the text block because apparently there's a word limit for it now >.<

You can get full level 80 Exotic gear for Karma in Orr at the Temples of each god once you've beaten the meta event for them. Each Temple gives different gear. You can get Berserker's stuff at Grenth's.

That said, I think there's plenty of worth to doing Dynamic Hearts (those gold heart things around maps) and buying some of the stuff the heart vendors sell once you've done them? Some are even part of Item Collections

Your chosen server doesn't really matter except for who you can play with (NA can't play with EU and vice versa) and who you're fighting for in WvW

If you join a party or a squad and they're not in the same map instance as you, you can right click on their icon on the side or on their name in chat and choose to join their instance

Login whenever they release new Living Story!! It's kind of expensive to go buy them all if you missed them (you can convert gold to gems but it's still a hassle esp if you don't get to farm much and don't like grinding) and if you login you get it for free

the common and uncommon dyes are so cheap, feel free to just go nab each one of them for your Fashion Wars desires from the Trading Post

Personally, I don't really craft but there's some endgame stuff where you need max level in some of the crafting disciplines. Feel free to look into it since I honestly don't really craft >.>;; Bit expensive

Buy better inventory bags from the TP, like. Idk why it's never explained outright that there's a shit ton of things you can buy from the TP that are just never mentioned? Had no idea about sharpening stones and all that until I got bored one day and decided to look through literally every tab

Iirc you can lookup things in game really quick with the /wiki command then typing the thing you're curious about after it. Like '/wiki Dragon Bash'

You can do custom emotions by typing in /e though it doesn't make your character do anything. I think this was for roleplayers? You can target an NPC or player with the non-custom emotions by adding @

Hang onto your aquabreather whenever you get one and don't forget to use the same runes on it as the rest of your armor. it switches out your headpiece completely and ngl, it's so oddly hard to find an aquabreather for higher levels. Eventually you can get one in Orr, in Cursed Shore at Gavbeorn's Landing from Gavbeorn himself but that's like, late core game :/ not even Exotic too. I think you can land yourself a good Rare one from doing Tequatl the Sunless, but it's by chance and I don't think they're for sale in the TP.

Speaking of Teq, there are World Bosses you can fight everyday!! This is also something I don't think the game ever elaborates on, but they're usually the final stage of a map metal event and are huge whole events that give good rewards + stuff you need for high level/Legendary crafting. gw2timer.com has the timers for literally every boss worth fighting repeatedly and their locations too, I think.

I really really feel like not enough is said about taking time with the game to smell the flowers and do dynamic events that no one does. There's a lot of little stories and ambient dialogue from various NPCs in the world, and a lot of interesting little interactables in some places. Something I really like is that nearly every graveyard has epitaphs on each gravestone, and it's so interesting going through all of them. One of the maps, Drizzlewood Coast, gets a lot more... idk real? Shocking? And kind of depressing if you've played the charr personal story and pay attention to the names of the cache keepers at the end of the first half of the map's meta event.

Like. It's a really pretty game even if you don't go all out on your graphics, and there's a lot of details in the environment even in core Tyria that only get crazier through the expacs. HoT genuinely feels like a massive, massive jungle that you're lost in (also the enemies become several times more dangerous than in Orr), and PoF the desert really does feel massive, and the detailing where there's civilization is nuts. Can't speak for EoD since I don't have it yet, but Cantha was gorgeous even back in GW1.

Seriously like I feel like my biggest tip is to stop and appreciate all the details the devs have put into their literal world building. This isn't the kind of game where you should rush to 80, especially not on your first playthrough/character.

Hey, anybody know this post where it's headcanons about the characters (I think the brothers?) where its a person sent in an ask detail some of their personal headcanons like asmo, being a scorpion, glows under black light. Then the blog replied with clubs be having black light parties to get asmo to attend. Another headcanon I remember from the post is that Levi is a constrictor and not venomous, and Satan leaves flammable glitter trails, making him a literal trail blazer?

hi hi!! @trashy-corvian I was your secret santa !! :D I read you like dnd and prefer classic sun and moon, so as such I was that anon that sent that one ask ab sun and moon playing dnd and I went ham with this part:

some details in da piece:

sun has flower resin dice bc on ur refs for them sun liked both flowers and photos of the outside world :D

moon has glow in the dark dice ( i made an alt ver of the piece that shows it better ignore that i makes no sense to play dnd in the dark hjsfhkjfsh)

i've never actually played dnd but my dad was big into it so i consulted him for this a lot. he said people use just about anything as placeholders on the board, so i had sun's player character miniature be one he made, and moon just used a moondrop wrapper since your ref said he was low energy (also mostly just i thought it was funny)

all the other pieces on the map that aren't drawn onto it are things you'd find in a daycare (smalls toys, pom poms, etc). sun and moon's chairs are the ones from the daycare (at least before that one update) and the table's supposed to be one of those generic folding ones since the small ones wouldn't be big enough

i decided to focus on the one bit bc you said you like unhinged sun, so i figured that + moon shenanigans would b funny! sun snap da pencil yes yes

also i hope i didn't make u look too dead inside jadskhkadsj it's supposed to read more as lighthearted joking "i'm so done with this" face if that makes sense

Chapter 1, Bitter MCs

As per some requests, I will be going over some of my plans for specific additions and changes to Chapter 1 to be more inclusive of bitter/dismissive MCs!

I will be paraphrasing and quoting for the most part, but all screenshots of replies + ask are here (Imgur).

Keep in mind, all of these are just plans for additions to Chapter 1; they have not been uploaded.

Morally grey MCs?

First Anon's original ask says:

Will there be an option to play a somewhat evil/grey MC? As in, a MC who is actively power hungry and seeks to become more powerful at the expense of other gods

I definitely think the option should be there, but I've looked through and haven't seen the opportunity to for MC to explicitly express their power hunger just yet! I think that will come into play if MC believes it's possible to become more powerful! If that does happen, I will 100% keep this in mind. It makes a lot of sense, especially for MCs who've developed an inferiority complex.

Especially as the conflict between mortals and gods is coming to a climax, I can see an MC attempt to take advantage of the situation to put themselves in power... we shall see? :)

Bitter MCs?

As far as having enough bitter options, the opinions were slightly mixed. A couple of people pointed out a lack of options to be resentful or negative:

Second Anon:

In the demo, MC can be loud and happy but not resentful or really negative exept for some small inner monologues.

trashy-corvian commented that although the MC has to be a certain way for the story to progress, and having a hostile and openly aggressive MC wouldn't make sense,

maybe more passive-aggressive or bitter/resentful options would do well? I was trying to play like that but it came out more passive/neutral than bitter in the demo.

tarotbyte expresses a similar sentiment:

i like the more bitter (maybe not down right mean more just sorta sick/tired of it) options ... i like being able to be a bit short with others and saying very little and not being overly enthusiastic with interactions

They point out this is because their MC believed the Universe lied about loving them, in addition to being mistreated by other characters, which could lead them to being "bitter and more curt with their words."

Other people do not necessarily see the need for it, one of which being my editor, and First Anon who said:

I personally felt like the level of potential rudeness in the demo was about right. MC could be cold and somewhat haughty, but not cruel for the sake of it (Which for me made sense, since none of the characters did anything that would warrant such a response).

shaywrites-ifs says:

I don't often like angry and rude for the sake of it so I might be missing the need or point of hostile MC for this kind of if.

Ultimately, I believe the demo suffices, but I also think it can be expanded to be more accommodating of bitter MCs without being needlessly cruel. They can still be hostile, but this is mainly from being mistreated for so long, which could have them developing a pretty unpleasant attitude.

I've created a list of areas I plan to/have already added bitter/dismissive options:

For the first scene with the lady, the only real openly hostile choice is dismissively telling her "tough luck" and glaring at them. The choices are the same, but the glaring option has been revised as it suggests MC does it because they're too tired to argue. It's rewritten so a cold/unfeeling MC can also choose it, if they don't want to waste their breath arguing.

Mortals call for MC's attention, and the only real negative option is to turn from them. Now you can openly grimace at them, no hiding it.

When mortals ask for MC's help, initially the only real negative option is to go "Fine. What is it?" -- now you can snap at them to speak quickly.

When Nero says he came to see you, the options generally suggest you have a good relationship with him. Now there are a couple of new options: one in which you dismissively ask him why (expecting him to come for reasons other than just to see you). You can also raise your eyebrows in question for a simply neutral, but skeptical option.

It is written that you wave to Nero goodbye when you go to see Rafaele. Now, it merely says he departs.

Could add an option where the MC gets annoyed for being dragged out to talk about the Ceremony. Could also add an option where the MC protests to coming, but ultimately has to (for a reason that can be picked?).

When Luciel and Rafaele talk about mortals, you can be annoyed about the topic rather than simply disinterested.

When Salvatore says Rafaele was worried about MC when they passed out, MC can dismissively or frustratedly insist that other people not worry about them.

If you are able to tell Salvatore that the Universe is in pain and they change the subject, you may be able to refuse to speak to them.

Make a mention that the seating assignments during the Ceremony are based on families/quisitora, so MC would not be able to choose to sit away from their parents.

When Rafaele tells MC they should speak to mortals, the only real "no" is joking sarcasm or a passive "I'll pass." You should be able to express your disdain at the idea (or even hide your feelings).

Please, let me know if these are still too tame, or if they are unnecessarily hostile. Most of these options are minor additions, and thus do not derail the story at all.

The only somewhat significant change is if MC can resist the idea of going to the Ceremony, but I believe it'll also suffice for MC to be able to express their unhappiness, but go along with it for one reason or another (which may be an extra set of options?)

Ciocana's Dance

I think there is a pretty good consensus here, mainly that people who are touch-averse or uncomfortable want the option to be more upset with Ciocana. Originally, you can only unhand or pull away from them if you have the strength; now they will unhand you when you attempt to.

I am still figuring out the details, but I definitely have plans to add option(s) to be upset with them, and to hopefully have Ciocana offer an apology in the future--albeit in their own way (forgiveness, of course, optional).

Also, you can get upset with them, but you seem to brush the encounter off without another thought. When you say you mistrust them, you should be able to pick the option that what they did to you just then is the reason for your mistrust.

If Ciocana witnesses that you are upset with them because you are touch-averse, they will not be as playful when they speak of your mistrust of them.

Funny side note, though, that some people have zero issue with the dance. Their opinion is not incongruent with having more options to be upset, of course, I just thought it was funny having two very different (but not opposing) crowds on this!

Concluding Thoughts
