I cannot begin to express in its entirety how Anthony Bourdain has contributed to the shaping of me. It is silly that I feel it to this greater extent when I don't know the man or have ever met him. Of course, I have heroes that inspire me but never to this degree. My recollection is blurred but I would assume the first time I watched Anthony Bourdain was with my parents. My dad loved travel shows and the History Channel and my mom loved anything food-related. It was their middle ground when it came to television. I grapple with his impression of constructing your medium and sharing it with an audience. His interview on Fast Company in 2018, the last full interview of Bourdain before his passing, said somewhere along the lines of  “It’s like shooting porn." when referring to filming a travel show. The same formula, the same shots, same attempts. But what makes Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations or Parts Unknown different; rather - what made it better than the rest?

Tonight I sit alone in the apartment I share with my boyfriend. The apartment is especially quiet enough that I can hear my thoughts. I mute it out by trading my thoughts with an episode of No Reservations. Tonight, the show brings me to South Africa. The episode is not even 5 minutes in and he communicates his dismay on the ruthlessness of racism and colonization in the country by commenting that statues of White Colonizers at the park should be taken down. The whole episode is filled with questions he had regarding where Africa is now while acknowledging the inequality that still exists.  Bourdain was humanity's perfect bystander turned CEO of human connection. I’m sure it's easy for others to travel and mingle with enough people to collect enough clips to make an episode, people do that all the time but he was different. He cared about the countries he visited and its people.

His style, the authenticity, the uncovering of layers of what makes us - us. What makes you who you are and what drives others to madness. Anthony Bourdain does not travel to be a critic of the best of the best restaurants around the globe. He may in some instances but mostly the show depicts his ventures into the hustle and bustle of everyday people. The whole premise of his show depicts what travel is all about. I’m not talking about getting out of your comfort zone or doing something unfamiliar but rather connection. How are you and I connected? What does food mean to you and how is it that a certain dish can be cooked a hundred different ways from one country to the next yet we are all connected by this string.
