pH value and why it’s important when it comes to skincare.
one of the biggest problems i have with many diy skincare twitter threads is their avoidance/ignorance surrounding pH value. pH, in case you’ve forgotten or simply do not know, stands for potential or power of hydrogen. pH values describes how acidic (pH < 7) or basic (pH > 7) a substance is. this is huge when it comes to skincare because the skin, with an average pH of 5.5, is moderately acidic.
when a product of either a lower pH value or a higher pH value is introduced to the skin (especially facial skin, as it is the most sensitive) it can wreak havoc to it. see, the skin has something called an “acid mantle” which protects the skin and keeps it healthy. essentially, the acid mantle and the pH of one’s skin go hand in hand. when you disrupt the skin’s pH (by applying a product that has too low or too high of a pH or by not balancing the pH of your skin after applying certain products) then you will without a doubt disrupt the skin’s acid mantle. a disrupted acid mantle is no bueno because it will cause irritation, dry and dehydrated skin, and skin diseases like acne, dermatitis, rosacea, etc. (sidenote: many things can ruin the acid mantle, but pH does play an enormous role in the health of the acid mantle.)
now that the importance of pH and the skin is clear, let’s look at a few examples as to what could contribute to disrupting the delicate pH of the skin. my absolute favorite is probably split between lemons and baking soda. lemon has a pH of TWO. i repeat TWO. far too low of a pH for the skin’s delicate acid mantle. you might as well just rub stomach acid on your skin. baking soda, on the other hand, is far too basic, with a pH of NINE. stop using it in skincare. moving on to a soap that i personally used to use on my face: dr bronner’s castile soap. now i can literally hear thousands of twitter accounts being like “no. dr bronner’s castile soap is my holy grail even though it is causing accumulative damage that i’m not even aware of yet.” to which i say, “sorry.” dr bronner’s soap has a pH of 8.9. wow, have fun damaging your skin in your fruitless effort to be “all natural”. my advice is to always check the pH of any product you use (some products need to have slightly lower or higher pH in order to be efficent, but most daily use products- cleansers, toners, moisturizers- should fall between a pH of 4-6. a simple google search should be enough to tell you the pH of most products.)
also, i know there are so many people who are like “well it works for me so maybe you should shut up. everyone has different skin types”, and look you can ruin your skin if that is what you so please to do. however, good skincare comes out of a place of scientifically proven fact and knowledge. i do say to each their own, but just because something seems to be working well for you doesn’t mean it is truly a good product. it can take time for damage to be done to the point where you can see it.
here are the sources i used (i also recommend that they are read as they are more thorough than me):

Praying for #serenity tonight, and hydrating for a good nights sleep. Thank you @doterra for an amazing product and to the #thermoflask for keeping my water cool. Took my #llv #lifelongvitalitypack to support my whole body health, which I have not done nearly enough of lately. Probably part of why I’ve felt stressed. DON'T HAVE THE FIRST BITE OF YOUR STEAK WITH THE SAUCE!
Here is my theory guys. If you eat the first bite of steak with the sauce will now make the steak perfect. Instead you should eat it first without the sauce and then you can dip in in sauce or whatevs. Imagine. Its like your life. Your life was perfect without your s.o. but when your s.o. comes BOOM! There you have it! First bite of steak without the sauce. Take care of food like it's your own child except for the fact that you can eat it without going to jail.
